Nobel Gases

Also known as inert gases. They are the last group, i.e. group 8, in the period table. As they belong to the same group they have the same physical and chemical properties. They have a stable electronic configuration by having an octet in their outermost shell, under normal condition they are odorless, colorless, tasteless monatomic gases. All of them has a closed subshell, a p subshell which is tightly bound (for helium, it has only s orbital). They are chemically inert and so dont form chemical bonds with other atoms. They are only VanderWaals forces of attraction between them. As they dont have have any valence electrons they have have high ionization energies and poor conductivity. With low boiling points, they are gases at room temperature.

A man can do anything; a man can change his stars...........

A man can change his stars, but in 14th century Europe, fortunes are not made, they are predestined. A Knights Tale is the story about a lowborn, boy named William Thatcher (Heath Ledger). He forever held a dream of one day changing his destiny in order to become a knight, in a day and age where upward mobility is not a common concept, and man dies in the same station into which he is born. No where in London is fortune believed to be able to change over night. One day however, William gets a chance shot at a medieval jousting tournament where he wins the match. Soon thereafter he reinvents himself, becoming a noble type of celebrity. He changes his name to Ulrich von Lichtenstein of Gelderland.

"Change YOUR stars, William." These are the words peasant James Thatcher says to his young son while watching a jousting tournament. Dated back to the medieval times of the Fourteenth century, A Knight's Tale is most certainly a legend, indeed. If a man believes enough, a man can do anything, William's father says. Indeed... William believed that he could become a knight, and by the end of the tale, he did indeed become nobility and not by birth... He changed his destiny.

In today's day and age, man is believed to be able to do whatever he wants with his life no matter what his destiny. Take Jennifer Lopez for instance. She was born in the Bronx New York. She lived in a tiny home and had what the 14th Century Londoner's would call no destiny. However, Jennifer Lopez got her big break in 1 when she was cast as a Fly Girl dancer on the TV show In Living Color. Everything went uphill from there. She began to get movie deals, and eventually became one of America's biggest superstars. Many people in the public eye today come from humble beginnings. I believe that this is because our educators today teach children that anything is possible if they will just believe in themselves. I think that this is a much better attitude to hold than the attitude held by the upper class of London in the 14th century.

The reason that I liked A Knights Tale was that someone decided to go against the grains of those days views of social status. William Thatcher believed that he could become a knight, and somehow he did. I believe that it is so important that people follow their dreams. If they do not listen to their hearts, then what is the purpose of life? Are there no goals? Why live if life can not be enjoyed?! I have my own personal goals, and will not stop at anything in order to accomplish them even if it means I must go against society... But, in this day in age, society will not stop me. Anything is possible! "If a man believes enough, a man can do anything....................."

Please note that this sample paper on A man can do anything; a man can change his stars...........A Knight's Tale is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Macbeth

If you order your research paper from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on macbeth. What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. This play was written by william shakespeare and the title of the play is macbeth.

The witches could foretell the future, they can add temptation, and influence Macbeth, but

they could not control his destiny. Macbeth created his own misery when he kills people. This causes him to become insecure, because of the reasons for his actions, which in turn causes him to commit more murders. The witches give great enticement, but in the end, its Macbeths decision to fall for the temptation. The three Witches are only responsible for introducing the ideas to Macbeth, and putting the ideas in his head, but they are not responsible for his actions throughout the play.

However its more realistic to believe that Lady Macbeth, Macbeths ambition, and his own responsibilities ended it for him, not the witches. Lady Macbeth is shown early as an ambitious woman who can manipulate Macbeth easily. This is shown in the line That I may pour my spirits in thine ear. She is selfless, and wants what is best for her husband. Before the speech that Lady Macbeth gives in act one scene five, Macbeth does not want to go through with the killing of the king. She manipulates Macbeths self-esteem by playing on his manliness and his bravery.

Custom writing service can write essays on macbeth

Macbeth has the final say in whether or not to go through with the killing, but he loves Lady Macbeth and wants to make her happy. Lady Macbeth is the dominating individual in the relationship. It seems that she can convince him to do anything as long as she pushes the right buttons. Macbeths ambition is present before the witchs prophesies. He would never have thought seriously about killing Duncan without the witches. But the combination of his ambitious and the witchs prophecies leads him to kill the king. Lady Macbeth even says,"Thou wouldst be great/ Art not without ambition".Macbeth also says, his besetting sin I have no spur/ To prick the sides of my intent, but only/ Vaulting ambition. Macbeths ambition is shown while he waits to have a succession of kings after him. Macbeth has a lot of ambition in him and because of this, both the witches and Lady Macbeth are able to make him evil. It is this ambition that gets him into so much trouble not the witches. Once Macbeth kills for the first time, he has to cover up his wrong doings, or risk loosing everything he has worked so hard for. In the end, it all comes to Macbeth himself. Everyone is responsible for his own destiny.

This is what I think the theme is in this tragedy. Macbeth chooses to gamble with his life and when he does this, it is only him who chooses to lose it. He is responsible for everything he does and must take responsibility for his actions. Macbeth is the one who made the final decision to carry out his actions. He made these final decisions and continued with the killings to cover the murder of King Duncan. The killing of Duncan starts an unstoppable chain of events in the play that ends with the murder of Macbeth and the suicide of Lady Macbeth. While the witches are not totally responsible for the actions of Macbeth, they are responsible for introducing the ideas to Macbeth. Macbeths ambition led to the deadly chain of events. The witches never had any real power to affect the future in the play. It was Macbeth all along who ended it for himself.

The Great Awakening

The Great Awakening was a religious movement during the 170s and 1740s in which itinerant ministers presented powerful messages of salvation and which provided early Americans with a greater sense of nationality. This religious movement also had a lasting effect upon the manner in which the people in the American colonies viewed themselves, their relationships with each other, and their faith. This movement caused a separation between church and state, acceptance and diversity, and the founding of new, more secular colleges.

Toward mid-century the country experienced its first major religious revival. The Great Awakening swept the English-speaking world, as religious energy vibrated between England, Wales, Scotland and the American colonies in the 170s and 1740s. In America, the Awakening signaled the advent of an encompassing evangelicalism, the belief that the essence of religious experience was the new birth, inspired by the preaching of the Word. It invigorated even as it divided churches. The supporters of the Awakening and its evangelical thrust--Presbyterians, Baptists and Methodists, became the largest American Protestant denominations by the first decades of the nineteenth century. Opponents of the Awakening or those split by it; Anglicans, Quakers, and Congregationalists, were left behind.

The Great Awakening also resulted in an outburst of missionary activity among Native Americans by such men as David Brainerd, Eleazar Wheelock, and Samuel Kirkland; in the first movement of importance against slavery; and in various other humanitarian undertakings. It served to build up interests that were inter colonial in character, to increase opposition to the Anglican Church and the royal officials who supported it, and to encourage a democratic spirit in religion. The Great Awakening that revived the churches in America, it extended from the Northeast through the Middle Colonies and into the South. It brought changes not only to Christianity in America, but also affected communications, politics, and social barriers within American society. Denominational barriers broke down as Christians of all persuasions worked together in the cause of the gospel. There was a renewed concern with missions, and work among the Indians increased. As more young men prepared for service as Christian ministers, a concern for higher education grew. Princeton, Rutgers, Brown, and Dartmouth universities were all established as a direct result of the Great Awakening. Some have even seen a connection between the Great Awakening and the American Revolution, Christians enjoying spiritual liberty in Christ would come to crave political liberty.

Cheap Custom Essays on Finding a Job

The Great Awakening has come through and touched just about every ones lives in the 170's and 1740's. In some form or fashion it effected everyone in the America. Because the Americans were so involved now, the colonies rapidly matured. Transatlantic commerce linked the colonies to Africa and Europe. While schools, towns, and churches appeared on a receding frontier. The Era of Revolution was rapidly approaching the American people. The Great Awakening not only revived the American church, but reinvigorated American society as well.

Religion

Christianity is a world-renowned religion that originated in Hebrew times. People who follow the religion Christianity are known as Christians. It is a religion hard to condense into three main teachings or ideas without leaving out vital parts. However, one, Christians believe in only one God, two, they follow the teachings of a man named Jesus, and, three, and use the ten commandments which define how those faithful to God should act in their own communities.

First of all we will start with Monotheism, which means the belief in only one god. Christians believe that there is one God, and that He created the universe and continues to care for it. Christians from all over go to church to worship their God. Christian worship this one God and learn of Him through the Bible. The Bible tells of how God created heaven, Earth and all life in a process that took six days. The seventh day was blessed as a holy day and it was the day in which God rested. It was said that of all God created, his most prized possession was man whom was to have dominion over all creatures of the Earth. Along with that, it is believed that God made a promise to the people that he will protect and guide them as long as they serve Him. Now the Bible still exists and is the basis for modern day Christianity for many years.

Order custom research paper on Religion

Christianity is the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Christians believe God sent Jesus into the world as the Savior. Through the belief in Jesus, people believe that humanity can achieve salvation. Christianity teaches that God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world as His chosen servant, called the Messiah, to help people fulfill their religious duties. Jesus who was born in Palestine in about A.D. 30, is the son of God born through the Virgin Mary. He was a miracle, born to a virgin, put to death, and then resurrected. The birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, as the Messiah, created a new principle of worship. The Messiah is the savior for all people and of all sins. Jesus died, crucified to a cross, for all Christian's sins. Paul the apostle carried the message of the Messiah. His missionary journeys and establishment of churches enabled the spreading of the message throughout the Roman Empire, and since then Christianity has grown into acceptance.

Then we come to the Ten Commandments. Christians use the Ten Commandments, which are a set of ten laws that define how those faithful to God should act in their own communities. Christians follow these 10 laws and try to live their everyday lives by them. They are morals for the Christian religion. The Ten Commandments, according to the Bible, God wrote and gave to Moses on Mount Sinai. The Ten Commandments are also called the Decalogue, and became very important for Christianity. Christianity sees the Ten Commandments as the basic principles that should govern human conduct.

Today, Christians make up the largest religious group in the world. Christianity has almost 2 billion followers worldwide. It is the major religion in Europe, the Western Hemisphere, and Australia. It is a religion who worships one God, follows the teachings of Jesus Christ, and uses the Ten Commandments as laws to live their lives by.

Proper Punishment

Parents should be able to punish their children, but due to so much abuse we have lost to concept of punishment. It is hard for a lot of parent to raise there children without punishment, because without being able to punish children problems consist in and out of the family. Children needs to be properly punished to maintain control in and out of the household. Without proper punishment children are not showing respect to their parent or anyone else, Their abusing the system that states that parents are not aloud to punish their children, and they are commit crimes.

Without proper punishment children are not showing respect that they should. They are talking back to their parents and disrespected their elders. They don't care anymore. When a parent punish a child they know that what they did was wrong and know not to do it again, but when you have a child that does something wrong and don't get punished that child knows that there's nothing wrong. No parent should have to go to a store or out to the park and there child yells and scream because they can't get what they want it embarrasses a person. If a parent stops and punish that child then everyone will look at her and cal her a bad parent just because she is trying to keep control. Lack of respect is one of the main reasons family has problems.

The CPS system states that parents are not allowed to punish their children because it is abuse and children use that to avoid punishment. If a parent tries to punish their child that child would scream their calling the police because they think that parent is not aloud to punish them. They don't know the different between punishment and abuse. they think their not allowed to be punished period and that is wrong. Children needs to know that when you are punished it is not always abuse. When they know their going to be punish they call the police or tell someone that they have been abused to stop from getting punished. They need to be taught the difference between to two.

Buy custom Proper Punishment term paper

Finally without proper punishment children are commit crime. Young children are stealing, robbing, beating, and killing because of the lack of punishment. Parents are not strict enough to control their children. They let them do as they please just as long as their not in the middle. When their child do get into trouble they blame it on someone else or something is wrong within their child. Hey never what to blame themselves because they never toke the time to punish their child for the things they done wrong. At a young age a child does something and their parents let them get away with it they don't think nothings wrong and will do it again. Their will be no control and when that child gets older it is even harder to change that child.

Without proper punishment children are very disrespecting to their parents and will not have respect for others. They will use the system to get away with not getting punished due to the lack of knowledge of the law. The will commit crime because theirs no one their to punish them to let them know it is wrong. Without punishment there will be no control.

Economics is the study of how human beings their wants and desires, given the decision making mechanisms, social customs and political realities of the society. It is very interesting to see the different statistical results of each countries economic condition. This analysis is based on an article indicating the increase of prices on crude oil in the United States as of November 000.

Oil prices in the United States have great impact on the economy. A major increase in oil prices reflects that crude oil is an important source of energy for industrial countries. While petroleum prices are high and the U.S. economic activity appears to be decreasing, a projected growth and moderate inflation is forecasted for the next two years. Unless the prices of other goods and services decrease then the aggregate price level will rise. OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) is one of the main reasons why petroleum prices exceed the supply/demand curve. They attempt to keep prices above their competitive levels by adjusting crude oil supplies. Within the United States oil is traded internally and its price does not depend on domestic supply and demand but also on foreign supply.

The supply of oil tends to be fixed in the short term, since it takes time to explore for new reserves or tap proven reserves. In an economists view, the supply curve for oil is inelastic in the short run. Accordingly an increase/decrease in the demand for oil will engender a disproportionate response on the price side. Real GDP grew at about 4.5% annual rate through the first three quarters of 18 and inflation averaged about 1.5%. One reason for increase is that the economy's production frontier has been shifting outward from the origin. The ability to produce proportionately more output,

accordingly, has enabled firms to keep labor cost in check. At a time when margins are being squeezed by higher labor costs and more recently by the sharp increase in energy prices, firm have been able to post significant profits which have accordingly boosted equity prices and engendered other economy wide benefits. (http//stlouisfed.org)

Custom Essays on Supply & Demand

Since there is a great demand of energy use in the United States, the supply curve has shifted where by there is a need for mass production rather than outsourcing. America's oil supply is not local and so suggestions have been made to go deep sea drilling in order to locate oil on our soil to match the demands and therefore decreasing the price by a great percentage and thus reducing inflation. A way of seeing how energy efficiency affects the economic performance is by considering energy usage by state. Nevertheless, we need energy to survive and if the demand is continuously growing then producers will have to match the supply curve for petroleum. Because pricing is a now a large function of market forces political or economic developments can sometime increase the wide spread oil prices. However, states whose industries have experienced below average increases in energy have had slower employment growth. Despite all the increases the United States economy have managed to cope with the latest oil increase.

In the letter of the Scribe Nebnare-Nakht to his apprentice exposes a significant amount of information of the status of the scribes in Ancient Egypt. Throughout the Ancient Egypt the status of the scribes was greatly speculated to be of noble eminence. Those who decided to become scribe was giving that was worth while. Also the status of being a scribe surpassed the prestige of all other jobs the were available at the time. Such as being a merchant, peasant, cobbler, washer man, carpenter, etc...

The scribes in Ancient Egypt have a verity of responsibilities, which were said to be very prudent from the responsibilities of the other positions. Their responabilities entailed taking notes of all the output in the society's way of going about their lives. Scribes, in some occasions had to note down the nature of moving objects. As well as surveying the harvest and the lands of Egypt. Then to go to comment on its nature as well. Scribes were also required to attend various scenarios to jot or take notes of hardships, deaths and common exercises of merchants, and soldiers. Also anything that pretended to nature had to be registered through the scribe.

There are many traits that can be revealed about the general structure of Egyptian society. I first noticed that Egyptian society is very complex and frantic.

This is due to all the activities that are occurring at the same time by the significant amount of inhabitants with diverse positions. Egypt is a place where a lot of trade occurs. The trade that happens in this society consists of many types of goods, due to the fact that most people do not occupy there lives the same way. The goods that these people exchanges and reproduce are the ones that they can fabricate with ease and have been accustomed to by there past generations to learn and practice. Most of the occupations that people in Ancient Egyptian society hold are very straining and not outrageously rewarding occupations. Being the prime breeder of the household is not any easy task, with the exception of being a scribe.

Custom Essays on The Letter of The Scribe Nebmare-Nakht Ti His Apprentice

The Scribe is justified accordingly, considering the status level of scribes in Ancient Egyptian society. Lets define the statues level of the scribe in this society to be able to support my opinion as to why the basis of the scribe is not justified. In Ancient Egypt being a scribe was a position of high nobility compared to the other positions that were available. Those who chose to be scribes had the opportunity of gaining trust with the King, as well as gaining entrance into treasury and grenary. Their superiors usually advanced the scribes. One of the compliments of being advanced was that they were given offices by their superior. Therefore the bias of the scribe is substantiated, due to how the scribe were brood over in society of Ancient Egypt.

In Arthur Millers Death of a Salesman, the main character, Willy Loman, destroys his life while chasing the American Dream. Willys idea of the American Dream is achieving monetary success. Willy Lomans ambition to achieve monetary success destroys his life. This goal of money leads to the demise of his relationship with his family and eventually his life.

It is clear that Willy Loman raised his son, Biff, to do whatever it takes to gain monetary success. When Biff first returns home in the play, Willys first question is how much money he is making. This question is just a preview of Willys obsession with money. When Willys brother, Ben, comes to visit, Willys lesson of doing anything to get rich is evident. Ben says to the boys, Why, boys, when I was seventeen I walked into the jungle, and when I was twenty-one I walked out. And by God I was rich. ( ). The jungle that Ben is referring to is the African jungle. Ben became rich because he went into Africa and stole diamonds from the countrys mines. The significance is Willy introduces Ben as a great man. This acceptance of Bens actions shows Willys message to his sons to get rich any way possible. Also, because of his obsession with money, he leads his children into lives that he wants for them and not necessarily what they want. This ambition for monetary success is Willys tragic flaw and through his message he passes his flaw onto his children.

Willys fixation on money eventually costs Willy his life. When Willy is fired from his job, he is unable to provide for his family and has to take loans from his neighbor, Charley. Charley offers Willy a job, but Willy refuses to be less than his friend by working for him and says, I--I just cant work for you, Charley. ( ). While out of a job Willy slips deeper into insanity. This is shown through his frequent hallucinations or daydreaming. Through these flashbacks Willy looses his grip on reality. Willy finally comes up with a way to make money. Towards the end of the play, in an imagined conversation with Ben, Willy says, Its twenty thousand dollars on the barrelhead. Guaranteed, gilt-edged, you understand? ( ). Ben responds by saying, You dont want to make a fool of yourself. They might not honor the policy. ( ). This conversation reveals Willys plan to commit suicide so his family can collect twenty thousand dollars in insurance money. Willy eventually follows through on his plan and commits suicide and his family does not even collect on the insurance money. This shows Willy firm belief in doing anything to get money by ending his own life for twenty thousand dollars.

Willy was so focused on getting monetary success that he allowed it to ruin his life. The biggest problem is that this ambition did not die with Willy because he passed it on to his children. In the end, Willy died chasing the American Dream.

Analyze the plays final scene in terms of the plays overall meaning.

The final scene is extremely important in A Dolls House. The act is the deciding point of Noras life will a wonderful thing happen or not? It begins with a foil for Nora and Torvalds marriage. Mrs. Linde and Krogstads decision to be together can be seen as ironic in the context of Nora and Torvalds marriage because, Mrs. Linde and Krogstad both suffer from significant personal and moral problems, they have a better chance of a happy and true marriage than Nora and Torvald do. Mrs. Linde pleads revealing all to Torvald because, as her coming together with Krogstad suggests, she believes that it is possible to build a relationship of mutual dependence of shapeless characters as long as both parties are fully aware of each others motives. Mrs. Linde hopes that, through this, both she and Krogstad can become the better people they know that they can be.

The extent of Torvalds investment in a fantasy world and the importance of Noras false characterization is revealed when he describes how, at parties, he pretends not to know her so that he may seduce her all over again. And, perhaps more importantly, Nora is quite candid about her understanding of all this, telling him flatly that she knows.

Noras time at the party has been the first time that she has left the borders of the one room in the entire play. Moreover, she has to be dragged back in. It is Torvalds own desires to have Nora entertain him that necessarily forces Nora to journey into the real world. Also, she also temporarily leaves the room to exchange her party dress for everyday clothing, her first lone foray from the room. This new trend is the beginning of her final departure from the room. This departure ends the play, shattering the values that had supported the walls of the house.

When Nora leaves for the final time, she is leaving for reasons other than what she had intended at the beginning of the Act. Before Torvald confronts her with the letter, she is on her way to commit suicide, determined that Torvald should not have to sacrifice his life for hers. She considers this the appropriate thing to do because she believes that he would willingly give his life for hers as well. In this way, they have an equal relationship. However, she is extremely disappointed to discover that he clearly has no intention of sacrificing himself for her. Instead of refusing to abide by Krogstads demands and taking the blame on himself, Torvald accuses Nora of ruining his life, telling her that she will no longer be able to see her children or maintain their marriage except in public appearances. Nora even asks him whether he would give his life for her and her fears are confirmed when he answers that he would never sacrifice his honor for a loved one. Consequently, Nora resolves to leave Torvald, aware that true wedlock is impossible between them because neither of them loves the other, or is even capable of doing so. Nora realizes that, before she can be a wife, she must first discover herself through venturing out into the world. She leaves an unformed soul, determined to become a full person rather than the doll of the male figures in her life.

The Bound Man is a story of obstacles and limitations set forth before him. The story tells how the Bound Man uses his little freedom that he does have to his advantage. At the end, The Bound Man is finally free in his own way. This can be applied to life for all humans. At first we have very little free and a lot of limits. As we continue to grow, we find our freedoms and push back some of our limits. If we live our life to the fullest, our freedoms will be limitless, to a certain degree, and we would also work harder to push those limits back.

When a human is brought into the world, its limits are very limited. The boundaries created for it are very strict and its whole day is controlled. There are very few things that it can control. When it is able to do something it tries and tries until it is done right. Then it moves on to try to do something else better. Soon, what all is learned is interconnected with one another and is put to good use all at once. The same goes for the bound man. He has to realize what he can and can't do. Having to relearn his movements over again and to figure out what is possible. Trying and failing is what happened to him. But instead of giving up, he tried harder and the work that it took paid off. Soon all was interconnected and he was on his way to where ever he wanted to go. Both are good examples of trying and not giving up until what ever the goal maybe is completed.

Once a human gets use to his new surroundings, he can quickly exploit his limitations. He does this by trial and error and not afraid of doing something new. For instance, if he wants to learn how to do something good, he's going to have to practice it over and over again. At first it may seem that he can't do it but if works hard enough and doesn't let fear get in his way, he will learn to do it the right way. Once he learns to do it the right way, he can learn to do it more quickly than the last time. Once one does exploit their limitations, the freedom that one might encounter has the ability to increase as well. For example, if a kid doesn't know how to ride a bike. He can learn to ride it and once he does he has pushed back his limits. Once the limits are pushed back, he now has more freedom to go anywhere he wants because he has the transportation. In the case of the Bound Man, his current limitations would be that he can't go places very well. So he must figure out how to get from point A to point B. He realizes that he has to hop to get to places. Here we have the Bound Man pushing his limits back in the ability of going places. Once he did this, he increased his freedoms as well. It's all about turning some thing negative into something positive.

The Bound Man is easily related to life. From being born and trying to find your way in life. Finding your limits and creating more freedoms for yourself is what life and what The Bound Man was all about.

The Soviet Union had fought alongside America and Britain, to defeat Nazi Germany, Italy and Japan in the Second World War. At the end of the war, devastation was wide-spread. The Soviet Union was terribly affected by war, ruined by war. Total Soviet casualties doubled those of any other nation. Millions were homeless, without husbands, without an economy to get them back on their feet. Now that the war had ceased, the USSR and United States had no reason to co-operate as they had previously. Instead of being allies, Stalin was now "deeply distrustful of the intentions of the West... " Stalin was determined to protect his country from an attack by Western powers. The Soviet Union was weak and vulnerable, and its leader, Joseph Stalin, was determined to build a both economically and militarily strong, secure nation. He would do anything in order to accomplish this goal, even if it led to protest, and attack, which can be interpreted as aggressive acts.

Joseph Stalin's foreign policy partly involved strengthening Soviet influence and preventing an invasion from any western country. In order to protect the USSR, Stalin wanted to establish pro-Soviet governments surrounding the Soviet Union. These pro-Soviet governments would act as buffer zones against another attack; Russia had previously been invaded three times by western countries twice by Germany, and in the Russian Civil War, causing substantial losses of lives and resources. Therefore, Stalin desired to safeguard Soviet security. These 'buffer zones' would "act as a barrier against further invasion of the Soviet Union from the West, " providing security for the USSR. He was determined to never allow such a devastating war and its terrible effects to destroy his country like it had after World War Two. At this point, it is understandable why Stalin would have wanted to defend his country from what he saw as threatening western powers. The United States did not understand Stalin's obsession for security, and thought he was trying to spread communism, especially when he wanted to create surrounding pro-Soviet states.

I agree that Stalin's foreign policy in Eastern Europe was defensive, but only up to a point. In his heart, it seems as if Stalin had not abandoned the idea of expanding world communist revolution. After the post-war years, when the Soviet Union had had time to recover from the effects of war, Stalin's policy changed from defensive to aggressive. This policy even led to the point in which Stalin wanted no intervention at all from the West in Eastern Europe. He aggressively and desperately desired total control, to dominate the whole of Eastern Europe and establish communist ideology.

The Door

By Miroslav Holub

1. What is the poem's message? How does the poet convey this message?

Order custom research paper on The door

'The Door' by Miroslav Holub conveys one clear message, that of being open to the possibilities of life, whether they are good or bad. To effectively convey this message Holub uses many techniques in his poem.

The imperative "Go and open the door" begins the poem. This command is firm and because it is constantly repeated throughout the poem is a strong image in the readers mind. The image intended and conveyed is at a deep, metaphorical level. Literally it is simply the act of opening a door. Although when considered at a more profound level this door symbolises an obstacle and the act of opening the door symbolically shows compliance to the possibilities and opportunities that life offers. 'The Door' does not suggest that life offers positive possibilities, or negative for that matter but it does show that being open to the good or bad possibilities stimulates a change, however small it may be, "at least there'll be a draught".

Along with the imperative "go and open the door", Holub also uses repetition to suggest the possibilities that may be found on the other side of the door. Holub uses many "maybe"s, "or"s and "even"s to show different consequences that may be apparent once opening the door. Holub starts by conveying an image of "at tree" and other concrete objects. He introduces the idea of fantasy when he also suggests a "magic city" could be on the other side.

In the second stanza he suggests objects and situations that may relate to the reader, "Maybe a dog's rummaging".

The next image he introduces is of a fog "if there's a fog it will clear". This suggests that if at first it does not seem superb, it will change.

In the fourth stanza there is a rather sudden change in the poet's tone. In the previous stanza's the poem sounded realistic and even optimistic although now it is rather the opposite. The tone becomes pessimistic and depressive, "Even if there is only darkness ticking", creates a powerful, ghoulish image as it is not the normal.

The final thought of the poem is "at least there'll be a draught" which suggests that at least there will be something different, however small it may be.

Miroslav Holub creates emphasis by using indentation in two specific cases; "or the picture… Of a picture" in stanza two and "even if…. Nothing…. Is there… go and open the door" in stanza four. These examples of indentation indicate a second thought and create emphasis.

I believe the reason this poem is so effective is because of the simplicity of it. The poem's structure is of a list with "maybes" "ors" and "evens" to show all the possibilities that could be found once opening the door. The words and phrases are very simple and clear even though they have a deeper meaning the images are still well conveyed.

The poem is based on an extended metaphor, that of the door and the act of opening it. The door stands for an obstacle and by opening it suggests that you are opening yourself up to life.

Miroslav Holub has created a very simple yet powerful image in "The Door" and effectively conveys this image by the use of many techniques throughout the poem.

Bondage of the flesh.

. Church (House of God) One word tradition. Just to use one example, a person may feel obligated to be a member of a church and its ways simply because of tradition. "Well, my great great great grandmother went to this church and it has been in the family for years." There is no obligation to a building. And that is what some people seem to miss. God is everywhere. Don't let man tell you where you need to worship God. That is between you and God. Bondage to a Church because my pastor said so.

4. Marriage. "Even though he beats me I have to stay married to him because God said so" Bondage in marriages are often heard of. Feeling that you need to stay married because you took those vowels.

5. Lust. Bondage of the flesh. "See pornography"

In September 001, Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore unveiled a stone monument of the Ten Commandments. Thompson, a federal judge, told him he must remove the statue. After refusing to obey the judge's order, the Alabama Judicial Inquiry Commission suspended him. In response to the suspension, Moore said, "It's not about a monument. It's not about religion. It's about the acknowledgement of almighty God." He also said, "It is a sad day in our country when the moral foundation of our law and the acknowledgment of God has to be hidden from public view to appease a federal judge." It is illegal for him to display the Ten Commandments in the courthouse because the law requires separation of church and state. Moore also claims that placing the monument in the state building is "not about religion" but about "the acknowledgement of God"; by saying both of these statements, he is contradicting himself. In addition, Moore is trying to get attention and publicity by defying the federal judge.

Although Moore believes that many of our laws are based upon the Ten Commandments, these laws are also founded on separation of church and state. This means that America cannot have a set religion and that religious matters must stay separate from the government. By putting the Ten Commandments monument in the courtroom, this law is being violated. Separation of church and state is vital for Americans to worship freely and have religious tolerance. By acknowledging God in the courtroom, Moore is breaking this tolerance. He is also violating the First Amendment of the Constitution, which states that all American citizens have the right to freedom of religion.

When Moore explains his reasons behind placing the Ten Commandments monument in the courtroom, he contradicts himself. He claims that it is not about religion it is about acknowledging God. Many religions, including Christianity, are based on the acknowledgment of God; therefore, if he wants to acknowledge God, he is promoting a specific religion, and not keeping church and state separate. God is recognized in other ways, like the "Pledge of Allegiance" and on America's currency. It is not imperative to recognize God through a monument. People who believe in God do not have to be reminded, and people lacking religious beliefs will not change their views due to a statue. The removal of the Ten Commandments monument would not make God "hidden from the public view" because God is acknowledged in other places such as churches and synagogues.

Moore's motives behind placing the monument in the courtroom are also in question. He snuck the statue into the courtroom at two o'clock in the morning, knowing that he was breaking the law. After the judge ordered him to remove it, Moore refused. He is trying to gain both positive and negative publicity. Many people have come from all over the country to protest in front of the courthouse. Protests are generally viewed as negative but Moore is using them to his advantage by making him known across America.

The Old Jail

On a recent trip to St. Augustine, I toured the remarkable old jail. This building was completed in 181 and I am amazed that it is still standing today. The old jail housed prisoners for over sixty years until it was turned into a historical site.

During the tour, one of the first places that I viewed was the tiny living quarters of the sheriff and his family. The sheriff only made a measly two dollars per day while he worked in the jail. I guess the free living space made up for the low salary. I would not want to live in a place that was full of criminals especially if some were in there for committing murder. Several replicas of old furniture and different antique items could be seen in the living quarters. The tour guide told a few horrifying stories of things that happened to sheriff and his family while they lived there. The next place the tour took me was to the male and female quarters.

Custom Essays on Old Jail

The male and female quarters were almost identical. Both had metal cots for beds and a toilet in each tiny cell. The tour guide shook the iron bars to make the image more real. She told the group that prisoners would shake the bars to get attention from the guards. Many stories were told about different ways that the prisoners would try to escape from the cells. Some of the stories were funny because they told of the idiotic ways some of the criminals tried to reach freedom. At the end of each row of cells was an all-metal room that was about the size of my closet, which is not very big at all. This cell was the solitary confinement room. This was one of the several forms of punishment used in the jail. Some of the other punishment methods for the prisoners were working outside, cleaning the toilets in all the cells, and maximum security. Maximum security was when a prisoner was being punished and was forced to stay in his or her cell or the solitary confinement cell with a guard outside the iron bars to watch the prisoners every move. This allowed the prisoner zero freedom. I would hate to be in jail. It reminded of an old dirty place that had not been cleaned in forever. On the walls were signs that stated the required behavior for the prisoners and the punishment that would be enforced for each rule that was broken.

The final place that I toured was the kitchen. Antique kitchen appliances could be seen throughout the room. The jail had employees that worked in the kitchen and some of the prisoners who were awarded for model behavior were also allowed to work with the employees. Screw holes could be seen in the counters where knifes and other sharp utensils were stuck to the counter with chains for the safety of the workers and other prisoners. I would not want to be one of the employees who worked in the kitchen because of how close the contact was with the prisoners.

When my tour was finished, I thought to myself of how thankful I am that I have never been in jail. I could not stand to live the way prisoners do. I know the conditions in the jails of today are different, but it is just the fact of having someone watch me twenty-four hours a day.

Oh my aching back!! Back pain is the number one problem facing the workforce in the United States. Low back pain is one of the most expensive benign conditions in America. Every year 5-10% of the population 00-150,000 people get low back pain. Risk factors are repetitive lifting, vibration, smoking, alcohol abuse, multiple pregnancies, inactivity, osteoporosis, and a familial trend. There are no quick fix or total cure for most back problems. The good news is that chronic back problems can be treated effectively to limit the impact on your every day life. Most people with low back pain do not simply injure their back suddenly. Over many years your back is subjected to repeated stress which may not result in pain at the time the injury.

The anatomy and physiology of the spine is simple yet difficult to describe. Consider a pile of childrens blocks alternated with cushions and stablilized with guy ropes. In your spine, the blocks are boney vertebrae, the cushions are soft golf-ball like sacs, and the guy wires are the muscles and ligaments of your back. Back pain is caused by vertebral injury or cushion (disc) trouble, but without muscle strength, the spine is unstable and susceptible to injury.

Signs and symptoms can be divided into two areas. The first is mechanical type pain. Mechanical type back pain results from inflammation caused by irritation or injury to the back. Mechanical type pain usually starts near the lower spine. It rarely extends below the knee. Compressive or neurogenic (meaning nerve related type pain occurs when the nerve roots that leave the spine are irritated or pinched. A common case of compressive pain is herniated disk. The nerves that leave the lower lumbar spine spin to form the sciatic nerve. One of the earliest signs of pressure on a nerve root is numbness in the area supplied by the nerve. Another compressive pain is spinal stenosis. In some people, degeneration of the spine can result in a narrowing of the spinal canal and this causes all the nerves within the spinal canal to become inflamed and fail to work properly.

There are many tests that can be done to diagnose back problems. However the very first step is going to see your doctor and based upon your signs and symptoms the doctor may order an XRAY, MRI, and or CT just to name a few. Xrays are usually done on the intial visit. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the most common test that is done because it allows for visualization of bones, nerves and disks of the spine. The CT (Computer Assisted Tomography) the next most common test is simular to the MRI but allows for improved visulization of the spine.

Treatment options include conservative versus surgical. Conservative treatment is exercise, medications, physical therapy and rest. New on the market for back pain which Jerry Lewis utilizes is the Epidural Steroid injection. Surgical treatment is laminectomy, disketomy and spinal fusion in some selected conditions. Treatment usually involves two goals. The first goal is relieve the immediate problem and number two is to reduce the risk of re-injury.

Prevention is the Key with good posture, body mechanics when lifting and exerciseing.

Phase I. Acquisition I

In this phase we were asked to first develop and weight a set of criteria including; performance, cost, compatibility, scalability, modularity, support, IPR and security. The next step of this phase was to determine whether to buy or build the DSS, given RM, stockholder and vendor information. I chose to buy from BASS versus Fischer or building in-house because of various factors, one being that it had the lowest cost, $680,000 versus $1,000,000 for Fischer and $1,60,000 for in-house. It also had the greatest year ROI and IRR of the three choices.

Acquisition II

Help with essay on System Development Lifecycle Methodology

This phase is necessary because a low security rating of the BASS system that was not taken into account allowed a computer virus to infiltrate the system. The two choices were to upgrade to the latest anti-virus software, or by the DSS from Fischer. I chose to go with buying the latest anti-virus software because it provided a greater yr. ROI, 6 versus 17 percent, as well as greatest IRR, 80 versus percent. The cost was also a factor, $78,000 for the anti-virus software versus $1,40,000 for the Fischer system. This resulted in a 15% increase in cost, and ROI decreased from 86 to 6 percent. More attention should have been paid to the security factor up front.

Phase II. Training I

In this phase, we were given 4 options/strategies to train the users on DSS at 5 different locations. The options were as follows

1.Instructor-led training, one for all offices.

.WBT on the intranet.

.Training workshop at Chicago

4.Instructor-led training, train change agent at each office.

I chose the WBT on the intranet option because it offered the best results

·End user satisfaction index of 84/100 percent

·Time Line of 0/60 days

·Effectiveness index of 80/100 percent

·Users trained was 140/150 people

Training II

Here, we had to choose between two options to augment the training, and these options were

1.Instructor-led training

.Online site training augmentation

I chose the online site training because it offered the best results

·End user satisfaction index of 8/100 percent

·Time Line of 5/60 days

·Effectiveness index of 85/100 percent

·Users trained was 14/150 people

Phase III. Implementation

In this final phase, we were given 4 implementation options

1.Phased design, starting with the New York office, cost of $500,000 and 45 days time.

.Implement in the Chicago marketing dept. as part of the testing, cost of $700,000 and 50 days time.

.Implement in all the offices at the same time, cost of $750,000 and 15 days time.

4.Implement in all the offices, but have the users use the old and new system for a month before discarding the old system, cost of $1,000,000 and time of 60 days.

As a result of our choices, the sales department was able to offer better discounts to our customers, and Finke and Barry's has regained its lost market share.

When your young you really dont think about death or anyone close to you dying. You just expect everything to always stay the same. When I was young I was never faced with death or the concept that someone important to me would leave. I have learned that many experiences in life can teach you. This experience is one of them.

When I was seven years old my great grandfather was told that he had bone cancer. Of course I didnt know what that meant I just knew that he was very sick. He lived with my great grandmother in the Sequoia Mountains so I didnt live very close to him but emotionally I felt very close. About six months later my family and I went to visit for Thanksgiving.

I walked in the front door of his house and saw him lying in his recliner. His face was pale white, and he looked so sick. Even the feeling of the room felt different. It didnt seem like the warm house that smelled of my great grandmas famous raisin bread. Instead it felt cold and smelled of vomit. This was the first time I realized how seriously sick he was.

I always thought of him as being this strong super hero type but when I saw him lying there he looked so fragile and helpless. I was even afraid to give him a hug. Later the next day my aunt arrived from Texas to visit for Thanksgiving. My mom asked me if I could go outside for a while and I asked why and she told me that she needed to give my grandfather a bath. As soon as I walked out the door tears dripped down my cold face. He really was helpless. I walked for at least an hour just thinking. As I walked I found this perfect pinecone and decided to bring it home. I remember handing him the pinecone and saying, since you cant go hiking anymore, I thought that I would bring the outdoors to you.

That week I spent all my time with him. Sometimes I would read to him and sometimes he would read to me. We would watch old Elvis movies on TV all day because there was an Elvis marathon on. That week it seemed like we did everything together.

On Thanksgiving I was so happy that I could be with my grandfather. Normally he would carve the turkey but this year he seemed much to weak to even stand on his own. As my grandma started cutting the turkey he stood up on his crutches and walked over to the counter and carved the turkey. This symbolized so much. Even though he looked so weak physically, emotionally he was the strongest person I knew. The next morning I had to go home. Saying goodbye was so hard because on the outside I acted like this wasnt going to be the last time that I saw him, but on the inside I knew it would be.

Two days later he died. At his funeral I cried of course but it didnt seem as hard because I had said goodbye. I miss him dearly and it is hard but through this all I feel as though I have become a much stronger person. I have gained strength, courage, wisdom, and maturity. My great grandfather has taught me so much and I will never forget the time we have spent together. I know that I will see him again someday and everything will seem the same.
