In One Ear and Out of the Other

You hear it from television, you see it in billboards, stay in school. You see people

struggle through simple everyday life because they have dropped out of school or

haven't continued on with their education. As a youth I of course did not listen but now

see the importance of staying in school.

It is my freshman year in high school and I am very excited everything is different,

there are more kids and we are considered the underdogs as they say. Nothing like that

concerns me since a lot of my friends from Junior High School have accompanied me to

High School. I should have known from the start that was going to be bad business in the

end. Everything is going fine as far as adjusting to the school but right at the closing of

second quarter I fall very ill and fell behind in my studies and this started a lot of my

troubles. I got discouraged because my grades were low and it was harder than I

imagined getting them back on track so I finished my freshman year with out of 5

possible credits. Off to summer school for me with no hope, summer school only offered

courses where you could earn a half credit which was bummer for someone in my

situation.

I have finished summer school with the hope of starting off my next school year on a

good note. I have to take a lot of repeat courses the following year and I feel like I am to

smart for this, and plus these classes are boring since I've been here done that. I initially

just start cutting class which ending up turning into no school at all, my parents worked

the day shift so they never knew I was going back home chilling out or hanging out at

the local shopping centers with friends. There parents had no ideal so that made it even

better we would alternate hanging out over to each others houses for we wouldn't be just

on the streets were the rest of the truant students hung out. I get fed up with that daily

ritual of cutting school and decide to make a change for the better.

It is coming close to the end of the first quarter of the school year and I found out

about this alternative school for youth with low attendance rates and decides to get

enrolled there. This school had been designed to help troubled youth graduate on time

through accelerated classed to get caught up in classes and stay ahead.

I stayed focus on what I was there for, I put my best foot forward and successfully

completed my school year and decided to go back to my home school which is my

original school I transferred from.

I am now back in my traditional setting High School and only a few weeks into my

suppose to be junior year I realize that the alternative school setting was better for me.

All I am able to think about is all this time I have wasted being irresponsible and

immature true I am a kid. We have responsibilities like school, which is the most

important thing in our adolescence. Even though we don't discover that until we're

older.

All my friends by now have dropped out of school or attend other schools so, I am here

alone, with no distractions which are a good thing. I am trying my best to stay on track

being that I am so grateful that I am getting a second chance. I will have the possibility

of graduating on time. A few months before school was supposed to end I received the

worst news, which eventually affected me in the worst way. The school district was

possibly shutting the doors to the only school in the whole city that gave youths like us

that chance we needed. I didn't let that affect me coming to school since the decision

about the school was really not final as far as we knew it was gossip.

School was getting ready to begin for the next year and the doors to the alternative

school are definitely not opening back up. Once again I find myself back in the

traditional high school with no possible way of graduating on time. To make matters

worse I find out that I am pregnant. So we are a couple of weeks in school and I am not

adjusting very well and as if I didn't have enough on my mind my father of my unborn

son passes away unexpectantly. I am in no position to go to school so I sought out

information on obtaining my G.E.D., after taking the test I received my diploma about a

month later in the mail and I felt so complete almost the way when I delivered my son

about a month later. I have earned my diploma in spite of it all and have moved towards

furthering my education. I keep in mind the people that have helped me get to where I

am today regardless of my continued failures. I must say have truly been blessed all

those words and images reminding you to stay in school and making you aware of the

dangers and awards life has to offer was once just words to me. I listened, and listened,

only now I hear.

Cheap Custom Essays on HELLENISM IN MUSIC

Hellenistic Philosophy Essay

Hellenistic philosophy has evolved over the years but a few modern day people and songs reflect the age-old theories of easily overlooked intellectuals. Jackson Browne and his song "These Days" reflect two major Hellenistic philosophies, stoicism and Epicureanism respectively. Browne leads a stoic lifestyle seen in his political activism and his personal response to difficult situations; he never just went with the flow. His famous song, "These Days," demonstrates the Epicurist theory; the narrator is seeking to avoid pain in his life to improve his happiness.

Stoics and Browne both believe in humanity and justice, virtue over pleasure. Browne represents the Stoistic theories because of his never-ending expression of his opinion. Zeno, the father of Stoicism believed that a person can't control outside forces but can control their own behavior and response. Jackson Browne was not the type of person to just sit in the corner and let things pass him by. He expressed his opinions and feelings with fervor and convicting emotions. He was a political activist. He opposed the Reagan administration and America's wars in Central America. Browne lived his life as a quest for truth and tried to make a difference. He spent some time in the late seventies helping with the anti nuclear lobby. Browne was a star and he used his fame and fortune for good and to elicit a positive change. Jackson challenged "the entire apparatus of deceit that lies at the core of his culture's everyday public life." He hated falseness and he refused to be like other stars who were fake to the camera. In his music he always wrote his true feelings and never wrote poser lyrics. Stoics believe in virtue over pleasure. It is most definite that Browne struggled with his political activism. He introduced thought contrary to the majority, radical ideas. But he was fighting for justice and humanity. If he had been the only one standing in an open square denouncing Reagan's administration, he only would've yelled louder. It didn't matter if he was loved my millions. All that matter was that he made a positive impact in the world through his work. His albums For Everyman and Late for the Sky speak of the courage it took for him to go against the majority. Browne lived his life in accordance to duty, truth and justice. He traveled to Nicaragua to publicize the way the United States was subverting the revolution there. He stood up for what was right. He believed in equality for all people. Stoics believed in equality and opposed slavery. Even when faced with tragedy, for example his publicized breakup with actress, Daryl Hannah, he realized that everything happens for a reason and the struggle to move on only made his stronger. In many songs he reminds people about love and that they should never forget about it because as dangerous as it can be, the real thing is worth it all. Jackson Browne is one star that is a positive role model for fans and he should never be forgotten. He is a true stoic who also believed in what is right, not what was popular.

Jackson Browne's song, "These Days," demonstrates the Epicurean lifestyle always seeking happiness. The song speaks of a person who has been through some hardships in life and is seeking freedom for them. He is seeking to be free from pain. Epicures, the father of Epicureanism, believed that everyone should seek happiness and that happiness equals pleasure minus pain. The only way to achieve personal happiness is to decrease the pain factor. In the song, Browne writes, "And I had a lover/ It's so hard to risk another these days." He is saying that he doesn't want to fall in love again because of the pain that comes with it. He is staying single in order to avoid the pain, decrease his pain factor. He may be missing out on something really wonderful but he doesn't want to risk the feelings of pain. Epicureanism was all about being happy. The deepest pain was fear. Browne writes, "Now if I seem to be afraid/ to live the life I have made in song/ well it's just that I've been losing so long." The person in the song chooses to be passive and sit on the sidelines instead of jumping into the spotlight and living a life filled with the fear of failing. Once again the character is decreasing his pain factor in order to achieve happiness. Browne always played of the work of his predecessors and here he does it with the Hellenistic philosophy of Epicureanism.

In conclusion, the Hellenistic philosophies are different there first meanings but their essence is still used and believed in today. Jackson Browne's lifestyle and music reflects the theories of Stoicism and Epicureanism. He's constant struggle for good, humanity and justice and his poignant lyrics about quests for happiness are what made him into the musical legend he is today.

Gattaca a movie that explores the future of society in terms of what we have to undertake as far as discrimination and stereotyping is concerned, depicts one mans fight to reach an impossible goal. In the future racism will not longer be exploited, rather whether a person is naturally born or engineered will impact greatly on their future and what they will be able to accomplish. The not too distance future dictates all you can be, by what you are made up of as a person, genes.

Vincent the protagonist in the film is a degenerate, meaning he is born naturally, this affects his life greatly as he is diagnosed with a heart defect at birth and a predicted life expectancy of 0 years is placed upon him. Being born naturally poses Vincent's greatest threat, being that he cannot fulfil his dreams of being on a shuttle mission into space, as he doesn't have the physical prerequisite of perfect genes. His genes allow him to jobs such as a janitorial work and to lead an average life, one of hope. Vincent discovers the only way to reach his goal is to play a different role and to swindle society into believing he is Jerome Morrow. In deceiving the environment around him he becomes very close to Irene a valid, who he can relate to.

Gattaca bluntly paints a portrait of how future generations can look forward to a world of technological hindrance and modifications. This insight depicts the consequences and possibilities of such advancements and shows how lucky we are now to enjoy a society with very little gene and DNA modifications. Racism is an issue today but it may become a thing of the past if genoism takes over. It is encouraging to see that racism is recognised by society today as immoral. Racism is quite cruel judging people by the colour of their skin or their religion. Imagine if genoism existed now people would be stereotyped by their life expectancy, defects and gene imperfections. Equality would be diminished and the valid world would always unfairly reign superior to natural born members of society, causing restrictions on the hopes and dreams of many.

For Vincent being a 'Godchild' makes him feel as though he is inferior to the valid world, but this doesn't stop his persistent approach to reaching his goal. Anton, Vincent's 'perfect' brother is a genetically engineered valid, with this potential his is worthy to carry the name of his father, Antonio. Anton is blessed with all the right genes allowing him to be healthier, and smarter. Anton's future is one of security and success, but he lacks the determination of Vincent, because he doesn't need it, his life is layed out before him from a very young age. Anton's future is handed to him on a silver plater, this leaves him a life without creativity or a sense of excitement. Vincent on the other hand battles a world that is designed for the engineered.

The only way Vincent gets to see Gattaca from the inside is through janitorial work, such as cleaning floors and windows. In working at Gattaca Vincent observes the practices of the space mission staff and understands what is required to participate in a launch into outer space. Vincent knows of the testing prerequisites and how they can cause him to be overlooked, without even being interviewed. His DNA exposes all his deep dark truths, and how they can be simply revealed from a sample fingerprint on a door handle. Vincent does everything he can to find the glitches in the system and uses them to his advantage.

Today relationships come under some prejudice, we as a society don't use technology today to determine if another's race or religion is equal to ours, which is highlighted in Gattaca. Irene believes that it is important to have Vincents hair sample analysed so she can be educated about his potential, she is disappointed to find that Jerome is a so called valid. Prejudging dates by analysis seems to be the way of the futuristic world. This very personal form of analysis provides another way for society to expose godchildren and their invalidity. It is Vincent's thorough hygiene and commitment to being Jerome Morrow that allows him to escape being identified as an invalid.

It is encouraging to see that the invalid world are so strongly against genoism that they would move heaven and earth to be able to make their childhood dreams a reality. Vincent becomes what is known as a borrowed ladder, meaning having a new identity. Vincent is destined for space and finds himself becoming Jerome a crippled swimmer whose injury is unknown by the society in which he lives. Jerome Morrow is a prime example of how being genetically engineered doesn't always guarantee an easy life. Jerome provides Vincent with his name and the necessary essentials of urine and blood in order to combat the rigorous ways of Gattaca. Being a borrowed ladder must be a common alternative for invalids to gain success. Gattaca is just another example of a minority group fighting for equality. This film encourages those who thought their dreams were out of reach.

The Status of Mobile Banking

In July 00, UK's online bank Egg stated that they were in the process of developing mobile applications. Chris Nelson of Egg's technology concept development group indicated that "the future of banking lies with mobile devices closely integrated with Web services" ("m-banking is there…"). This signaled to many of the skeptics that mobile phone banking or 'm-banking' is indeed viable. Yet, very few other institutions are considering mobile devices as a practical delivery channel.

According to a survey carried out by the International technology group Bull last year, 75% of UK financial institutions have stated that their primary IT investment for the coming year will be spent on the development of their Web based services, with less than 0% of the respondents including mobile commerce as part of their foreseeable IT plans ("m-banking is there…"). The results in the survey have thus cast a doubt over the future of mobile applications in Europe. Despite the popularity of mobile and SMS based applications in other parts of the world, Europe's financial sector has not fully capitalized on mobile technology. Banks are using Internet-based technology and customer relationship management software to attract and retain customers. They still believe that m-commerce has yet to prove itself.

Likewise, financial institutions in the US expected mobile banking options to be popular among their customers. After a short time of offering these services, many banks have decided to quit offering wireless capability to customers (such as Wells Fargo Bank) because of low adoption rates. For instance, "although % of users reported overall satisfaction with Wells Fargo's mobile banking, the service proved popular to only a limited group of about ,500 early adopters who used it mostly to check balances and transfer funds" ("M-Banking in limbo…"). The banks have left their options open stating that they would reintroduce wireless services if there is evidence of demand. Wells Fargo will continue testing wireless applications within the organization. Certain employees are for example provided wireless email access via BlackBerrys. These wireless devices are also used to notify personnel of system malfunctions.

Write your mobile research paper

Wells Fargo's strategy may prove effective since it is always wise not to rush into things. Many banks rushed to adopt wireless technology in the hope of gaining competitive advantage. However customers have indicated that wireless access is not of a high priority. Testing the technology internally to gain expertise and waiting for the right time (when there is a sign of increasing demand for instance) to introduce it is likely to be more effective.

In contrast, mobile banking is popular in Africa. One reason may be that mobile phones are more readily available and more accessible (since they are cheaper) than Internet connections in the region. In Nigeria carrying cash or credit cards may be dangerous even lethal which provides another reason why mobile banking may be appealing. One bank, First Atlantic Bank, as a result, introduced a mobile phone based payment system where customers can pay merchants and each other using SMS messages. The managing director of the bank has indicated that "the service was in response to the increasing clamor for an alternative and more acceptable payment other than cash in the Nigerian economy" ("m-banking is there…"). Banks in Kenya, Kampala and Zimbabwe have also recently launched SMS based services. Mobile banking seems to be a growing trend in Africa. The way forward for the banking industry in the region seems to be mobile phones.

Similarly, wireless banking is popular in Japan. A recent estimate indicates that the "number of Internet-ready phones is approaching 0 million and the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi now has 1.5 million wireless users" ("M-Banking in limbo…"). Real-time fund transfers between individuals are possible in Japan since banks are interconnected through a national clearinghouse. This may be attributed to the success and spread of G phones in Japan.

The Potential of Mobile Banking

Both telecommunication companies and banks are gradually recognizing the advantages of association between mobile telecommunications and banking in the form of mobile banking. For example, in the UK, major mobile network operators such as Vodaphone and Orange are beginning to offer with large banks such as Barclays basic banking services like account data and inter-account transfers on their networks. Banks for example send instant SMS messages or alerts to their customers at their request in respect to activity on their accounts with the banks. Another service that banks sometimes offer using mobile phones is alerts on mortgage rates and stock market activity, which is not personal information but nevertheless of great importance to many customers.

The aim is to achieve convenience, choice and flexibility and thereby attract a larger base of customers.

Today's society has taught our youth to question everything, from authority to nature. Yet according to Barna research, all they want is to be held accountable and to have someone actually listen to what they say. Yet as a society we are willing to back down, give up, or even ignore them as they are trying to tell us because we want to "save face." Jack, from St. Louis said, Parents are the number one influence in his life but they are too willing to back down on what they say if someone questions what the outcome will be. When asked what he meant he said too many times he has asked to go do something with his friends and he is told know his parents will change their mind because they don't want him to sit at home bored while his friends are out.

Parents almost seem to be trying so hard to understand what there teens are going through that they forget they need someone to hold them accountable too. Just because teens argue with their parents doesn't mean they don't like them or they don't respect them it just means they don't understand where the parent is coming from and want to.

Junior from South Carolina said that his peers have more to do with decisions and things that affect him than his parents. He would rely on his peers to choose what position he holds on subjects before what his parents' thinks but he still respects his parents. He thinks the media has a lot to do with decisions he makes but he would ask his friends what they think before anyone else.

According to Barna research, Peers Parents and media are the top three things influencing teens today. Peers are more apt to have influence on teens regarding religion, what school sports or even what a teens is willing to experiment in. Statistics show that teens are more apt to go to church that their friends go to than one that they don't know anyone at. More teens try drugs for the first time at parties where their friends are encouraging them to experiment. For a young girl she is more likely to lose her virginity to a young boy that has already had sex with at least two other girls. With or without pressuring girls are more likely to try things when their boyfriends say they wouldn't tell them to try something this is bad for them. Young men are more willing to do something when other guys are around them encouraging them to try it, even so they don't get think of as a "chicken". Teens are more likely to listen to their friends than their parents but they do listen to their parents.

Help with essay on Youth of Today

Yet still parents have more of an influence on teens than they think. Most teens listen to what their parents think but don't always include that in their decision making process but they do listen. Jared from Stockton said it almost seems like parents often think they shouldn't butt in their teens life because they don't want them to feel like they are not able to make decisions for themselves. But teens want their parents to butt in just not rule over them. He went on to say that if only he felt like he could talk to his parents about the mistakes they made me may not have made the same mistakes over and over again. When asked what he thought of parents not holding him to a higher standard as they did his older brother. He said he almost wished they would have raised the bar even higher because he saw the things his brother did but it was like his parents gave him permission to make the same mistakes because they lowered the bar for him. It was like they were tired of saying no so they just stopped talking about important things.

The third thing that influences what teens say and do the media including movies, music and video games. More teens have been hurt or killed while trying to repeat stunts they have seen on a movie released by MTV that depicts two young people lighting themselves on fire, getting run over by cars or even hitting themselves on the head with a hammer. Yet teens think this is funny. And Parents don't even know that there teens are watching movies like this. Parents don't know what is in their own homes anymore, said Tim Zuniga while talking about the influence that music has on teens. According to research teens that were given a list of 54 coping options including alcohol, praying and yoga teens chose music as the number one coping option. Sex and violence is imbedded in today's society and parents today don't even realize it.

In youth ministry seminar class with special guest Eli Lopez, youth pastor at Christian Life Center, we were given the key to having a successful youth ministry and that is Love! Loving a teen when no one else does. Sometimes we are so willing to give up on teens when they mess up or fail us but how often have we failed God and he still loves us. He said today that sarcasm always affects someone. Until you can prove to a young person that you love them you cant expect them to respect you. If you can win one teenager with love you can influence their whole world.

Essay Question The situation, the characters, the capacity of the play to keep one guessing and the use of the vernacular are qualities which make Summer of the Seventeenth Doll more than an ordinary play. Discuss.

An extraordinary play is where the play, via the actors, exchanges something and leaves and impression on the audience. Summer of the Seventeenth Doll written by Ray Lawler tells about the struggle of how a group of midddle-aged adults, living in the 50s, have to cope with the realization that their youth is over, aging is inevitable and change is a season in life. It is written in a very austere, yet simple manner, truly mirroring the openness of the Australian character. Lawler cleverly combines the different qualities including written textual features such as the situation, the characters and the use of the vernacular to deepen the capacity of the play. Lawler uses all these qualities to force the audience to repond, to keep guessing, to tease their expectations and emotions. In this way, Summer of the Seventeenth Doll is more than an ordinary play.

The situation that the play is balanced on, is vital in keeping the audience guessing and clinging to the edge of their seats. Summer of the Seventeenth Doll does not have a tranquil or calmness of atmosphere. It is always changing and brewing, even from the beginning, when Pearl who is the outsider, replaces Nancy. Slowly, conflicting situations--differing opinions, conflicting outlooks, arguments, fights, twisted emotions--within the play emerge and grow between the various characters. The situation is easy for the audience to relate to as it is totally relevant to the Australian lifestyle and background. It keeps the audience intense, waiting for the ever-building climax where all pretended gaiety and pride is stripped away, leaving emotions raw. It keeps the audience guessing and wondering, trying to grasp the impact and the shattered emotions, until the curtain falls. Thus, Lawler using the situation of the play, had made summer of the Seventtenth Doll a unique and far from ordinary play.

Characters are the life and essence of the play. Lawler uses stereotypical characters such as Roo and Barney to reflect on the Australian male. Each of Lawlers main characters brings a depth and capacity to the play as they mirror the uncertainty of reality. this is what keeps the audience guessing. Each also has hidden and complex impicit conflicts, expectations, emotions and fears that they have to face and deal with according to their own character. Roo is able to grasp the effect of age and change, on the other hand, Olive cant and there is no resolution to her conflict, which is rather unexpected and makes Summer of the SEventeenth Doll more than ordinary. Other characters like Pearl and Johnnie Dowd serves their purpose of being a constant reminder of reality and effectively contrast with the others. Lawler has used simple, yet complex characters that change and grow along with the play, to keep the audience guessing, making summer of the Seventeenth Doll far from ordinary.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on English Essay on the Play: Summer of the Seventeenth Doll

Summer of the Seventeenth Doll is written with the traditional Australian vernacular such as Gawd, what a low suspicious sort of coot you are, real wag and got em to take a coupla weeks off for a booze-up in town. Lawler uses idioms and slang in a realistic and unaffected manner that marks the characters as truly Australian. In this play, the vernacular greatly reflects the Australian character and style of simplicity, forthrightness and the way Australians live their lives, which is clearly portrayed in characters. For example, Roo has a very direct manner and Olives displays how Australians always look at the positive side of life. Lawler also integrates the vernacular into the play, unitl it becomes a quality and nature of the play and its parts. It plays a crucial role in creating the originality of the play and gives it an extraordinary character, in comparison to many other international plays.

Lawler has used Summer of the Seventeenth Doll to relate and impact the audience very effectively through the plays situation, characters and the use of the vernacular. He has weaved all these qualities to produce a play that has the capacity to play with the expectations of the audience and to keep them guessing until the very end. For this reason, Summer of the Seventeenth doll has proved to audiences everywhere that it is a more than ordinary play, a work of Australian art that will not be forgotten.

Jane Eyre is a novel, written in the Victorian era by the author Charlotte Bront. Set in the mid-nineteenth century on the English countryside Jane Eyre tells the story of an orphans troubled childhood through to adulthood. The novel is written in the first person, and thus magnifies the central character - the reader enters the world of Jane Eyre and is transported through her experiences at first hand.

Jane describes being raised by her cruel aunt Mrs. Reed at the familys Gateshead Hall. At ten years old, Janes been through many psychologically traumatic experiences. Her own aunt and cousin John are resentful of Jane and tease and patronize her for her poor and orphaned state.

Charlotte Bront is clever in blending the narrative so that at times Jane seems to be speaking as an adult, while at others she is speaking as a child or young woman. This heightens the indecision which is a central issue in the book. We never know, as readers, whether to be entirely trustful of Jane's actions and thoughts, because we are never sure whether she is speaking impulsively or maturely.

The novel is primarily a love story and a romance where wishes come true but only after trials and suffering. The heroine begins poor and lonely and ends up rich and loved; the orphan finds a good family to replace the wicked one; a classic romantic fairytale. But the Gothic influence cannot be ignored. There was little freedom for middle class women during the period of the Gothic novel, and this was still the case in the time of Charlotte Bront.

Write my Essay on The Red Room

Throughout the novel Charlotte Bront explores Jane's sense of imprisonment, physically, financially, and socially. The Red Room described in Chapter symbolizes this constant feeling of captivity Jane feels throughout her life, until she is able to free herself.

As Jane struggles against Bessie, the nurse, she says, "I resisted all the way a new thing for me…". This sentence foreshadows what will be an important theme of the rest of the book, that of female independence or rebelliousness.

The use of different settings show what the characters are feeling and is often a reflection of human emotion. The setting also foreshadows certain events that are going to occur.

As her punishment, Jane is locked up in the Red Room. The colour red is significant here. Red, the colour of fire and heat, represents passion and fury. The stately reds and other colours described in the room, deep mahogany, beige and other dark shades are typical of an imperial stately chamber, but they are also characteristic of the gothic period that Bront is writing in.

Jane feels both physically and mentally overpowered in the Red Room, the sheer size of the space and furniture is so much bigger than her, it just makes her feel smaller than she already is. The more time she spends in the Red Room, her fear and anxiety levels dramatically increase, and she becomes spiritually overpowered. As she passes the mirror, her sub-conscious mind plays tricks on her because of her physical state, and she thinks she sees the spirit of her dead uncle.

"This room was chill, because it seldom had a fire." I think this room represents Jane's soul; it is chill because she has no passion to feed the fire of life. The life that Jane has known is the life of an orphan girl, rejected by her only relatives. Her soul is both silent and solemn because living as a servant in the mansion Jane was ignored. People of the upper class did not wish to associate with those of Jane's low class.

By putting Jane in the Red Room without a fire, Mrs Reed has effectively shown the social limitations which weigh heavily against Jane in her search for expression of that passion and self.

The room was seldom entered. The only reason it would be was to be tidied, and this was to preserve the memories of Mr. Reed. The only reason Jane was adopted was because Mr. Reed had requested that Jane be a part of his family.

In the room, Jane sees her reflection in the looking glass.

That strange little figure there gazing at me, with a white face and arms specking the gloom, and glittering eyes of fear moving where all else was still, had the effect of a real spirit.

This reflection illustrates the harsh and fearful childhood of a strong-willed girl.

The low ottoman, where Jane is commanded to sit, represents Jane's stature in society. During this novel, she is often the plain girl surrounded by "the marble chimney piece" and the "high, dark wardrobe," a lowly governess surrounded by the upper-class citizens. Jane's soul is trapped within her, and she must find a way to liberate herself from this jail.

In my opinion this must be frightening for her to be locked up in a room, at such a young naïve age. She is locked away in a room that no one likes to enter. She's made to feel small and unworthy.

In this essay I will be showing how being in the Red Room affects Jane.

In "The Things They Carried", Tim O'Brien tells a story about the Vietnam War. In the story, the main character is a -year-old Lieutenant, Jimmy Cross, who leads a platoon of soldiers. The soldiers' missions are to march from village to village pointlessly, and to trash the village well. They also search out and destroy tunnel complexes in the Than Khe area. During the war, each soldier has to carry certain things; the things they carry are determined by necessity, function of rank, field specialty, superstition and are varied by mission. In addition, they also carry intangible emotional burdens like fear, grief and confusion. In mid-April, one of the soldiers, Ted Lavender, is shot in a mission to blow the tunnels. Jimmy blames himself for not performing his duties firmly, as he is thinking about his love Martha during the mission. After the tragedy, Jimmy decides to impose strict field discipline to keep the platoon together and carry out his duties as a Lieutenant firmly. This story reveals the cruelty of war. It also tells people that war may have enormous impacts on people's emotions and personal values. Furthermore, the story suggests that the emotional weight people carry may help or hurt them in life-threatening situations.

In the story, the author uses description and conversation to portray each character. The protagonist, Jimmy Cross, is a round character. The narrator tells a good deal about this character, thus we know the character's thoughts and feelings. Jimmy is portrayed as a dreamy Lieutenant. He thinks about Martha even when he is in missions; 'After five minutes, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross moved to the tunnel…and then suddenly, without willing it, he was thinking about Martha'. This shows the cruelty of war, as people are forced to separate from their love ones. Besides, Jimmy is a dynamic character, since his attitude changes throughout the story. Before Ted Lavender is shot, Jimmy leads his platoon laxly and he's always thinking of Martha. After the tragedy, he feels responsible for Ted's death; he abruptly decided that he must think only of his job in the field. In addition, he is 'determined to perform his duties firmly and without negligence'. Jimmy's change in attitude again suggests that war is cruel. Jimmy is only , but he has to bear the responsibility for his soldiers' lives. Rather than studying in a college, he is forced to grow and carry extra emotional baggage.

Besides the main character Jimmy, the author created many minor characters. Ted Lavender is one of the flat characters in the story. He has so much fear about the war, since he thinks that it's necessary to carry 'six or seven ounces of premium dope', so that he can forget he is at war. The character of Ted Lavender reveals one fact that the soldiers are afraid of the war and terrified of dying; however, they are more afraid to show their emotions. Revealing natural emotions like fear and showing basic instincts like run and hide are not valued; these means cowardice. As the narrator put in the story, 'It was not courage, exactly; the object was not valor. Rather, they were too frightened to be cowards'.

Apart from characters, the author creates conflicts in the story to carry out the central ideas. First of all, there is a conflict between the tangible weight and the intangible emotional weight that the soldiers carry. They carry tangible things such as rations and guns, which may save themselves at life-threatening situations. As all of the soldiers have extra emotional weight, for instance, fear, to carry; they bring things like good luck charm and photos to get away from the horror of war. This is ironic because the extra things they carry are not functional at war; the extra weight they put on may kill them instead.

The characters in the story all have conflicts between their internal feelings and external expressions. Even though they are terrified in the mission to blow tunnels, they make jokes on Lee Strunk about his 'rise from the dead'. Besides, they show courage and toughness in order to 'avoid the blush of dishonor'. These conflicts reach an extreme that 'Men killed, and died, because they were embarrassed not to'. Soldiers are usually expected to be brave and have courage at war, therefore, the characters in the story do things that they 'feel they have to do' in order to fulfill people's expectations.

In conclusion, "The Things They Carried" truly reflects what happened during the Vietnam War. It tells people that war is cruel and may affect a person's life physically and emotionally. Besides, people's values can be distorted during life threatening situations, which may lead to insensible decisions. Last but not the least; the story suggests that the emotional weight people carry may help or hurt them in dangerous situations.

California Pizza Kitchen Not the Taster's Choice

"Where should we eat tonight?" This is a question that is asked very often. Being in college and on a very strict budget makes this question very hard to answer. Recently my friends and I visited California Pizza Kitchen for dinner. I found that being in the situation I am currently in, that is being a "starving college student,' it is not the best place, but if you have money to spend and are not too particular with the food you want, this could be the place for you. Even though the restaurant going experience is fine and atmosphere is fine; the food is not good and the prices are too high.

The food preparation and execution was something that I was not too impressed with. Coming from a family that values the way their food tastes as well as it looks, I was not too impressed. I was somewhat satisfied with the taste of the food. The Rosemary Chicken Sandwich was pretty good but the salad I received on the side was really bad. The lettuce was not fresh and the salad dressing tasted like they were trying to make it bad. The lettuce was wilted and the croutons were stale. The appearance of the food was disappointing. The sandwich was not big at all or arranged nicely with the salad on the plate. One would expect that the chefs would try and make the food look appealing but they didn't at all. The temperature of the food was fine but the portions were too small for the amount of money I was paying to eat there. The food was not cold but the small size reduced the quality of the meal. If I had had more of a choice with the sides I could receive with my sandwich, I would have been impressed. When I asked for the sandwich it was immediately inferred that I wanted either soup or salad, and in fact, I did not.

The atmosphere at California Pizza Kitchen was not as bad as the food. The cleanliness of the table and dining area was up to par, although I found the comfort of the seating not to pleasing. The chairs were hard and wooden and did not lean back at all, which forced me to sit up terribly straight and gave me a back ache. The music and the lighting level seemed appropriate for the time in which we attended the restaurant. It was an eclectic mix of young talented artists with very mellow beats and voices. It was in the evening so the music was not too loud or irritating and the lighting was relatively bright. The dcor of the restaurant was not special at all; the only thing that happened to catch my eye was the presence of many mirrors which added a nice touch. They were located on the walls and ceiling which made the restaurant seem a lot bigger which was nice. I was only somewhat satisfied with the overall ambience of the restaurant. There could have been more decorations and artwork on the walls. I felt like the restaurant had less character because of the absence of wall art.

Buy california pizza kitchen:not the taster's choice term paper

One of the things that I unfortunately didn't take into account when choosing California Pizza Kitchen was the price factor. To me California Pizza Kitchen seems like one of those restaurants that are known for its name. Just like designer labels are liked because of their name, California Pizza Kitchen seems like a place that is liked because of its name. I feel like I am paying more to just say I am going to California Pizza Kitchen than really just paying for the food. Most of the Pizzas cost about ten dollars while the salad and soups cost close to six. If I am going to pay six dollars for a bowl of soup, it better be extraordinary! For the quality of food received, I feel that California Pizza Kitchen is overpriced. Of course it depends on what is ordered but as a whole the food costs too much. Paying six dollars for a salad that was not fresh left me with a bad feeling about the restaurant as a whole. It makes me wonder that id the salad is not fresh than the meat is probably not fresh either and that is a big problem because food poisoning these days is no joke.

If it were my choice, I would never go to California Pizza Kitchen but my friends seem to really like it. If you do go though, there are a few things that I would recommend the BBQ chicken pizza, BBQ chicken salad, artichoke dip, and the Rosemary chicken sandwich. You may get caught in a situation where you are forced to go, but if you stick to these few items, you'll be fine. The restaurant itself was not that bad but the food is not that good and the prices are too high. I was not overly impressed with the atmosphere to the point where it made up for the bad food, so I doubt I will be going back any time soon.

The effect one person can have on another can change the fate of someone's life. In the novel A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens' use of this simple concept of influence highlights various elements such as characters, images, places, or conflicts. Madame DeFarge and Lucie Manette are two examples of two characters who opposite effects on people in this novel. Through the use of influence, Dickens emphasizes the different effects Madame DeFarge and Lucie Manette have on people.

Madame DeFarge shows the element of influence through her words and actions. Whether it is her husband or a group of strangers, she has quite a negative effect on the lives of others. Madame DeFarge is shown as bloodthirsty and eager for the French Revolution to take place as soon as possible. Mr. DeFarge in the beginning of the story is reluctant to the idea of taking away innocent lives. Madame is able to change the view of her husband to something of a more negative nature because of her strong character and dominant views on the revolution.

Madame DeFarge not only affects Mr. DeFarge, but also the mob. Upon the news of Foulon's capture, a wealthy man who once declared that if people were starving they should eat grass, the revolutionary mob led by Madame DeFarge and the Vengeance, her partner in crime, sets out to meet Foulon the capture him. Upon tying him down Madame states, "'See!' cried madame, pointing with her knife. 'See the old villain bound with ropes. That was well done to tie a bunch of grass upon his back. Ha, ha! That was well done. Let him eat it now!' Madame put her knife under her arm, and clapped her hands as at play" (). Madame uses these words to excite the revolutionaries to mutilate of this man. These words change the views of the mob into a having a passion for the destruction of other opposed to no real interest at all. In turn the crowd explains, "the cause of her satisfaction to those behind them, and those again explaining to others, and those to others, the neighboring streets resounded with a clapping of hands" (). Through the power of Madame DeFarge enrages the mob to have a passion for the French Revolution. Through Mr. DeFarge and the mob, Madame DeFarge affects people to do things they would not normally do- kill. These thoughts she places in people's minds are harmful and vengeful and affect them to do things horrifying.

Differing from Madame DeFarge's negative influence on other people, Lucie Manette does just the opposite. Through her smile she brings to the room, Lucie Manette brings joy to whomever she encounters. In the beginning of the novel, Lucie Manette brings happiness to her father, Dr. Manette, life by helping him recover to better health. When Lucie first saw her father at the DeFarge's wine shop, she enlightened Dr. Manette with her love from there on. Lucie stays with her father and makes sure to meet his every need. She transforms Dr. Manette into a new person.

Help with essay on Tale of Two Cities

Lucie Manette not only affects her father in more ways than one but she always helps transform Sydney Carton into a better person. Carton tells Lucie about his troubled life and how it has amount to nothing stating that he will never live a better life than the life he lives now. Lucie, however, brings light to his speech and reassures him that he could amount to something great. Lucie question Carton with these words, "Since the state of your mind that you describe, is, at all events, attributable to some influence of mine- this is what I mean, if I can make it plain- can I use no influence to serve you? Have I no power for good, with you, at all?" (155).

With these kind words, Lucie tries to help Carton in asking him if there is any way that she can influence him to see the better things in life. Lucie brings joy to Carton's life and to everyone she sees. For Carton states how much Lucie has made him happy, "O Miss Manette, when the little picture of a happy father's face looks up in yours, when you see your own bright beauty springing up anew at your feet, think now and then that there is a man who would give his life, to keep a life you love beside you!" (156). Through these words Carton describes how Lucie influences his and her father's life for the better. Lucie Manette's positive affect on people change their lives for the better.

Lucie Manette and Madame DeFarge both affect people's lives in different ways. Lucie changes lives in a positive way, giving people a renewed strength inside of them and a reason to live. Madame DeFarge on the other hand, affects people's lives in a more negative way, encouraging them to kill and destroy human lives. Dickens uses these two characters to show the opposite effects people can have on others. Through the words of one person, someone can power another to do anything even kill .

The N.A.A.C.P.

For African Americans, the N.A.A.C.P. has been a long standing organization that fought long and hard to ensure that the voices of African Americans all over the United States would be heard. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was founded on February 1th, 10 by a multiracial group of activists. Initially, they called themselves the National Negro Committee. The founders were comprised of black and white leaders. Ida Wells-Barnett, W.E.B. DuBois, Henry Moscowitz, Mary White Ovington, Oswald Garrison Villiard and William English Walling were the pioneers that started it all.

The premise that all men are created equal, initiated the tireless efforts of people of all races, nationalities and religious denominations. They were united for one cause. As I was growing up, I remember hearing many things about W.E.B. DuBois. Of all the names listed as the founders of the NAACP, his stands out the most. I decided to take a look at his life and learn more about his contributions to the NAACP.

William E.B, DuBois was born in 1868. He grew up poor in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. After completing high school, he enrolled in Fisk University. From there, he transferred to Harvard University, where he graduated cum laude. In

185, DuBois was the first African American to earn a P.h.D. from Harvard. There he taught history and economics. DuBois was a strong advocate for higher education for blacks. He founded the Niagra Movement in 105. This organization would be a precursor to NAACP, which was founded in 10.

In 110, W.E.B. DuBois left the university to become the NAACP's only black officer. Ironically, he was fired from the NAACP in 148 for his outspoken views on foreign policy. The government indicted in 151 for being a Soviet agent. Eventually, he was found to be innocent of those charges. He joined the Communist Party of the United States in 161, and later that year was invited by the left-wing president of Ghana to live there. William became a citizen of Ghana where he died in 16 the eve of the historical civil rights march on Washington.

Another name that stands out for me as an African American woman is Thurgood Marshall. I can remember learning things about him and the plight for justice and equality before, during and after the civil rights movement. Thurgood Marshall was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 108. He graduated from an all black high school. At the age of 16, he enrolled in Pennsylvania's Lincoln University, the nation's oldest Black College. He finished first in his class of 1 at Howard University Law School. After a short time in private practice, Thurgood Marshall moved to New York to become staff lawyer for the NAACP. Thurgood Marshall served as director and chief counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. He won most of his cases in front of the Supreme Court. His is

most notably known for his victory in the 154 case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. He persuaded the court to unanimously declare segregation in public schools. When I think of this, it brings chills to me. It seems quite absurd to actually be in a time and place where all men are not seen as equal. I can't fathom being in a separate school from some of my fellow students!

The unanimous decision by the courts was a precursor to the civil rights movement of the 150's and 160's. Marshall won six other Supreme Court cases which lead to the desegregation of public parks, swimming pools, local bus systems and recreational facilities. President Lyndon Johnson appointed Mr. Marshall to the Supreme Court in 167. He was the first African American member of the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, health reasons forced Marshall to step down in 11 from the Supreme Court. He died in Washington, D.C. in 1 from heart failure.

W.E.B. DuBois and Thurgood Marshall are two leaders that stand out for me when I think of pioneers who left behind a legacy that we all have a responsibility to recognize and carry on. Equality for all men and women is the ticket to everyone being free. Free from the binds of racism. As I perused the NAACP's website, I was amazed at the hundreds of contributions they have made to the plight for justice and equality. While it would be difficult to discuss all of them in a class presentation, I decided to list them at the end of my paper as they appeared in a timeline. Here is a quote from the website "The history of

the NAACP is one of blood, sweat and tears. From bold investigations of mob brutality, protests of mass murders, segregation and discrimination. While much of its history is chronicled in books, articles and magazines, the true movement lies in the faces----black, white, yellow, red, and brown---united to awaken the conscientiousness of a people, and a nation. This is the legacy of the NAACP!"

Macbeth is a well-known Shakespearean tragedy with elements that are easily identified and illustrated on tragedy throughout the play. The main aspects of tragedy that I have encountered in the play are a protagonist (Macbeth) who is of noble birth and holds good fortune approaches a tragic flaw leading him to his misfortune and death.

Macbeth, being the protagonist seems to possess a good fortune at the beginning of the play. He is an honored and valiant Scottish hero who has just won his greatest battle against Macdonwald and the Thane of Cawdor, the traitors of his king, King Duncan. The king upon hearing the news of Macbeth's victory, names him the Thane of Cawdor

No more that thane of Cawdor shall deceive

Custom Essays on English THe major

Our bosom interest go, pronounce his present death,

And with his former title greet Macbeth.

(I.II.7-75)

Macbeths courageous fighting earns him a reputation of a brave warrior. Soldiers glorify him "...For brave Macbeth-well he deserves that name..." (I.II.18). He is complimented by his colleague, Banquo "Worthy Macbeth…" (I.III.16). Furthermore he earns respect from King Duncan "O Valiant cousin! worthy gentleman!" (I.II.6). Unfortunately Macbeth's good fortune alters as he stumbles upon the three evil witches.

After this encounter with the witches the news arrives by the kings messengers telling Macbeth of his new title, the Thane of Cawdor. At first Macbeth considers if the witches' first two prophecies became real then their third prediction would become accurate and he would be king hereafter without his need to interfere with his destiny. A good illustration of this is when Macbeth speaks to himself aside after receiving the news of his new title

If chance will have me king, why, chance

may crown me,

Without my stir.

(I.III.154-156)

This is where Shakespeare begins to outline another factor of calamity in Macbeth. Macbeths tragic flaw activates after Macbeth is encouraged and manipulated by Lady Macbeth to take charge of his future and seize the throne by killing King Duncan. Macbeth was exceedingly ambitious and had a tendency to struggle controlling it. A decent demonstration of this is when Macbeth confesses to himself that it is his ambition that insists on carrying through with the unthinkable deed

That tears shall drown the wind. I have no spur

To prick the sides of my intent, but only

Vaulting ambition, which o'erlaps itself

And falls on the other.

(I.VII.5-8)

Macbeth compares his ambition to an over-eager horse rider who tries to jump onto his horse's saddle, but instead he leaps over the horse landing on the other side because of his over-eagerness. He is meaning that perhaps his ambition is beyond its genuine need. Eventually he decides that 'chance' needs some assistance, so he prepares to murder Duncan and interferes with his good fortune.

Macbeths fortune changes from good to bad. After betraying and murdering his king, his guilty conscience grows on him and he becomes fearful of his actions being discovered. He becomes paranoid about his throne and in order to protect his power he decides to murder his friend Banquo because of his knowledge. Macbeth now having two murders on his mind becomes an unreasonable man whose guilt grows as fast as his greed. His bad fortune continues as he decides to kill Macduffs family. His tragic flaw grows and he becomes more fearful of his throne so eventually he visits the three witches again to confirm his current authority. The evil witches warn him of Macduff, tell him he will not be harmed by a man born of woman and promise him that Macbeth will not be defeated until Birnam Wood moves towards Dunsinane

Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth! beware Macduff;

Beware the thane of Fife. Dismiss me enough.

(IV.IV.77-78)

Be bloody, bold, and resolute; laugh to scorn

The power of man, for none of woman born

Shall harm Macbeth.

(IV.IV.85-87)

Macbeth shall never vanquish'd be until

Great Birnam wood to high Dunsinane hill

(IV.IV.100-101)

Ironically Macbeth sees these predictions as positive ones. Slowly the prophecies begin becoming accurate as soldiers camouflage themselves using the branches of Birnam Wood and move towards Dunsinane to attack the Macbeth's throne. Macbeth also hears the news of his beloved wife's suicidal death. Tragedy strikes, as Macbeth's fortune continues being unpleasant.

The last and final element of tragedy is the death of the protagonist. This is well illustrated by the death of King Macbeth. The last prediction comes true and Macduff who wasn't born of a woman, instead ripped from his mother's womb, kills Macbeth. Before he dies, Macbeth says, "…it is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing."(V.V.8-0) Referring to the emptiness in his life. He knows he is going to die. Major Paper # , Orange County

Orange County is a great movie because it depicts the trials of being a teenager, the good times of teenage years, and has a happy ending like any great movie. In Orange County, Shaun Brumder, the main character, experiences different stages in his life in only a short amount of time. Shortly after the death of his friend, Shaun realizes he needs to change his life to become something great by moving away, and then he has to face the fact that he may never leave the horrible city of Orange County. Finally he realizes he is good enough and so is his family and friends to start his career in his home, Orange County.

Shaun is determined that the only way for him to make something out of his life is to get out of Orange County. Shaun spends high school only concerned about where the biggest swells of waves are and getting high with his friends. In Shaun's Junior year, Lani, a surfing friend drowned after being pounded by a giant wave. Shaun was grieving at the beach and noticed a book by Marcus Skinner resting in the sand and read it completely over the next few days. The book inspires Shaun, who previously wanted to become a pro surfer, to go to Stanford and become a writer like Skinner did. Shaun writes the story of his life, includes his friends and his crazy family and sends a copy to Stanford. The people in his life are believed to be pulling him down because his friends are losers, and his family is clingy and destructive.

Therefore, Orange County can't possibly be a place for a great writer to come from according to Shaun. His dad is unsupportive because of what Shaun's high school life had been like, and he is only concerned with his cheating twenty something blonde Barbie wife. Shaun's mom is so dependent on Shaun, the idea of him leaving causes his mom to cry and drink, which is all she ever does. Lance, his older brother in his late twenties, lives at home, and is on probation for selling drugs; however, the drugs are constantly in his room. Ashley, a wild, animal activist is Shaun's girlfriend who also is unsupportive of his new decision to change and become a writer. His surfing friends don't want Shaun to leave because then they will lose a surfing buddy. All of this convinces him to send an application to Stanford so he can leave and be taught by Skinner.

Next Shaun goes through bad scenarios that make him realize he may never leave Orange County. He couldn't believe that he would have to stay in Orange County for college, so he didn't. His high school counselor sends the wrong transcripts to Stanford, preventing the "shoe in" from getting an acceptance letter. Nevertheless he even invites prestigious members from Stanford to his home, and his family has to try and prove he is worthy enough to go to their college. Everything imaginable goes wrong, his hung over brother and hammered mom destroy this meeting. Furthermore ruining any possibility of his acceptance. It's beginning to look like fate is telling Shaun to stay at home but he does everything to ignore it, he even drives to Stanford to convince the Dean of Admissions he is right for the school. Events with this meeting also go wrong, continuing to prove that Shaun is meant to stay in Orange County. He takes a walk around his dream school that is never meant to be, and finally Shaun realizes this

sad fact. He feels sorry for himself and gets a little depressed about the idea of still having to live with his family.

On the way to get his girlfriend and brother to drive back to Orange County, Shaun sees Skinner and stops him to talk. Skinner had read Shaun's story and tells him that it isn't finished, he wants to know what happens to all of these inspiring characters. Skinner had made the point to Shaun that if he insists of leaving Orange County, he will not be a great writer because all of his inspiration will be lost. It was then that Shaun finally saw the light. All this time he didn't want to go to Stanford just to be taught by Skinner, he wanted to go so he could run away from his life back home. Shaun now knew that it was all right to attend college in Orange County, and still become a great writer, without having to run away from his bizarre but inspirational family and friends.

Clearly Orange County is a great entertaining movie because of the lengths it goes to teach teenagers a lesson. The lesson is to deal with problem's head on and to have enough perseverance to find a way to get through it. We learn this from watching Shaun finish his Senior year in high school and go through all the experiences and changes he did. People realize that it's important not to run from whatever your problems are. Shaun shows this when he realized he didn't need to go to Stanford but he can still become a writer and live with his family.

The first piece of material I gathered was a picture via the internet.

This picture is of the River Rouge assembly plant in Dearborn, Michigan.

This picture shows the manufacturing of the fender for a Ford Motor Company

product. It also shows the facilities of the Rouge plant and how the plant

Write your The River Rouge Manufacturing Complex. research paper

it self was state of the art.

This plant was the largest of its kind at the time of its construction.

The Ford Motor Company at the time was one of the leaders in labor

relations. This picture shows the size of the plant as well as the working

conditions in the facility.

When viewing the photograph you can see the array of pipes and collection

devices to aid in the circulation of air and the collection of dust and

other by products made in the plant.

The next component I found is another picture of the interior of the Rouge

plant. This picture is one of many conveyer belts in the plant. This belt

is moving engine parts from the engine assembly to the final assembly.

Henry Ford was a pioneer in the use of the assembly line in the automobile

industry, and the Rouge plant was the ultimate in that use of the assembly

line. This photo shows the depth of the plant, being able to manufacture

all components of the cars without having to ship parts to or from other

locations in the country.

The next collection of photographs is of the exterior of the Rouge plant.

These photos were obtained from the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.

These pictures are of the Rouge during the switch of all production, from

the Highland Park plant, to the Rouge. It was also the time that the Model

A was beginning production.

This collection shows examples of four exterior views of the plant, allude

to the many different factories within the Rouge plant. The Rouge was a

steel mill, a foundry, a power producer and, an assembly line. This all

encompassing idea helped ford relegate all aspects of the production of

their product.

Along with the exterior, the interior showed the extent of the all

encompassing Rouge plant. The interior photographs, which were also care

of the Henry Ford Museum, show more factories within the factory. For

example, the four photos in this collection display metal forming, and

metallurgical operations. These pictures included forging, the blast

furnaces, removal of slag and, even salvaging scrap from metal ships.

The interior had two collections to view and the second reaffirmed what the

first portrayed. The second collection displays more metal working

production including the hydraulic shear, which was used for sheet metal,

the open hearth ladle and the hearth building. These photos gave an

impressive direction of the inner workings of the Rouge plant.

As said before the Rouge was the largest manufacturing complex in the

nation when it was built. An aerial photograph of the plant reaffirms that

fact. The photo was taken in 10 and you can see by the photo the plant

is very impressive. The caption that accompanies the picture gives an

actual figure of the Rouges square footage, the total is 6,5,484 square

feet.

Before the Rouge plant Fords main manufacturing plant was Highland Park.

The Rouge and Highland Park were similar in the way of utilizing the

assembly line to produce the Ford product. Many collections of photos were

found of the assembly line at Highland. One collection shows the final

mating of the model T, which is similar to the final mating of the model A .

Also the one day production of the Highland Park plant, which was dwarfed

by the Rouge one day production total.

The next collection of Highland Park photos displays the typical procedures

in installing components to the automobile. Each of the four pictures

shows the installation to the car. From the engine to the tires the same

principles that were used at Highland Park were used at the Rouge plant.

The final piece of material that was compiled through the search of the

Internet and other sources was the National Historic Landmark of Michigan

web page. This page has a link to an informational page on the Rouge plant.

The plant is listed as a national landmark since 178 and a Michigan

landmark since 176. Also listed on the site is the date the property was

bought by Henry Ford and, the date all production was shifted from Highland

Park to the Rouge complex. A significant statement is given about the

Rouge on the marvel of its creation and the full integration of all aspects

of automobile manufacturing to achieve vertical integration and self

sufficiency.

The transformation of Jane Austen's novel Emma into Amy Heckerling's movie Clueless does not trivialise the original text, but rather, enriches it by repositioning the responder. Clueless allows for a whole new understanding of Austen's Emma. An apparently superficial teen flick whose onion-like layers of meaning are peeled back one by one. The class structure and social mores evaluated in Emma are transformed in Clueless, reflecting modern values and relationship powerplays.

The similarities of each text comments on the universality or unchanging nature to aspects of humanity. It is looking at the modern day equivalents in each text that we see can the contrasting values of these starkly different worlds. Thus, on close examination, comparisons are revealed, making the process a truly enriching transformation. By examining heroines in both texts, we are forced to revisit familiar themes and issues.

Heckerling's characters may use the language of the 10s and have modern-day interests and occupations, but they depict similar traits as Austen's characters they display self-interest, vanity and practise deception but also demonstrate personal growth and perceptive honesty. Heckerling does this in a persuasive and engaging manner in order to target a larger audience.

Heckerling conveys a similar message by utilizing and exploiting the technique of film. It is true as Jocelyn Harris writes, "In an age when the visual is said to have superceded the verbal, the movie Clueless provides extraordinary pleasures to people who still read books." It takes Austen several chapters to introduce her characters Heckerling is able to do it in seconds through facial expressions, tone of voice, style of dress, gestures, body language and the frame of shot. Thus, Heckerling caters for a wider and more literate audience.

Write my Essay on Emma and Clueless - transformation

Heckerling establishes immediately that Cher will be the subject of dramatic irony. She opens the film displaying teenage lifestyle as it's portrayed in TV commercials, but for these teenagers this surreal world is the real world. The audience is then introduced to Cher's voice-over, whose incongruity with the images on the screen is a source of dramatic irony. There's a comical gap between her assertion that she "actually [has] a way normal life for a teenager" and the image of her choosing her outfit on a custom-built computer programme that drives an electronic wardrobe.

Clueless has the ability to appeal to all intellectual levels and entertain all viewers, an aspect which the novel Emma lacks. While Heckerling uses filmic techniques, Austen on the other hand uses dramatic irony. Although an educated person would not have trouble understanding the novel, someone of less intelligence would find Emma difficult to comprehend.

The social values connected with Clueless are a clever interpretation of morals set in a world familiar to mass audiences of the 1st century. Social context is strongly distinguishable, with the use of technology and machinery. Everyone in the film owns a mobile phone, beeper, and an expensive car. This instantly identifies the technological revolution, and the symbols of wealth, consumerism, superficiality and prestige.

Clueless succeeds in making the other characters of the novel updated to make them more relevant to modern audiences. Many characters have been transformed to fit the social contexts of today, in a different gender, personality or relationship to Cher over their forerunning characters. Heckerling transforms the character of Emma's governess Mrs Weston to the younger more modern Dionne, a 17 year old, wealthy, well-dressed socially conscious character of African American origin. Heckerling has not only targets the audience of adolescent girls and boys, but also creates a politically correct and very modern atmosphere by making Cher's best friend, the recreated Mrs Weston, as a young and vivacious black woman.

Heckerling reassesses new values, but also maintains the author's ironic voice and moral sense. The director illuminates the ongoing issue of woman's place in a patriarchal society as well as the miasma of self-awareness and the realisation of love. She renovates old rhetorical devices to create new insights. The spirit of transforming Emma serves to generate a new network of relationships that makes Clueless an undoubtedly enrichment to Jane Austen's Emma.

Clueless is a clever transformation of a classic text. It ultimately engages a wider and generally more literate audience who appreciate the verbal and the visual.

War Veteran Ron Kovic has lead a life that most of us can hardly even imagine. He has seen the horrors of war, received the devastating news of paralysis, and has continued to be an activist, fighting for what he believes. Throughout his true, personal story Born on the Fourth of July, a gruesome tale unfolds and the terrors of war and its aftermath are shown. With the use of intense detail, flashback/dialogue, personal emotion, and random thought, Ron Kovic has constructed a novel that not only opens our eyes to the real story of war but allows us to learn and feel right along with him. His detailed account of the Vietnam War, what it did to him emotionally and physically, and what he did to try to make a change is something that no one should miss.

Ron Kovic's straightforward emotion throughout the novel adds intensity and personal feeling for the reader. He constantly lets his feelings flow whether they are sad, scared, angry, and rarely happy. With his descriptive words it is easy for the reader to understand his pain and the horrific things he endured. Thoughts of Vietnam and what it did to him constantly rumble through his brain and he never holds back on the way he is feeling. "It frightens me to live alone with my paralyzed body and my thoughts of Vietnam...the tension and fear are twisted up inside me like a loaded spring"(17). As soon as Kovic thinks about the war and the physical and emotional state it has left him in his anger and sorrow rises. It is so hard to imagine how anybody could be put through the personal war that Vietnam brought to Ron Kovic.

Through the use of flashbacks and dialogue Kovic makes his story more personal to everyone who is reading it although they may have known nothing about the war beforehand. He puts the reader exactly where he was at that point in history and makes the reader follow not only his actions but his feelings as well. When Ron Kovic talks about his time at boot camp it is tiring and scary just to read about. " 'Get in there! Hurry up! Hurry up! Hurry up! Get in there!' screamed the sergeant who came running through the open door of the squad bay'"(88). It permits the reader to feel as if the sergeant is actually yelling at him, placing them in boot camp right next to Kovic. His fear, physical/emotional pain, and anger becomes yours as the novel progresses.

The author's confusion and crazy emotions are also intensified when he uses random thought at certain places in the novel. It is in the places where he is the most scared and confused where his thoughts just tumble onto the paper. Kovic takes you back in time and dumps you right where he was so you too can feel his pain. "(Lights flash, flash, flash standing by my rack now)sir! the private requests to make an emergency sitting head call WHAT DO YOU WANT KOVIC? Sir! o god o jesus yessir aye aye aye sir one two..."(8). This unique sense of writing style throughout the novel offers the reader a feeling that can not be evoked in any other way. Although it may look simply like a bunch of jumbled words, when reading Kovic's story, these words have a deep meaning and a lot of passion behind them.

Write your Born on the Fourth of July research paper

Although the book offers a lot of information about the war and the hell Kovic went through just to get there, it also holds a message that most people never here the aftermath. It is when Kovic gets home from the war that the real anguish takes hold on his life. The gruesome details about the hospitals he stayed in, the way the people treated him, and his search for happiness in a world full of pain makes you question this country in which we live. Kovic left for the war thinking that he would be a great hero, but when he returned he was nothing. "...after a while he realized that the staring faces weren't going to change and he couldn't help but feel like he was some kind of animal in a zoo or that he and Eddie were on display in some trophy case"(104). The military took Kovic in as a young boy striving to be a hero and dumped him out as a paralyzed man who knew way too much pain for his youth.

The powerful novel Born on the Fourth of July is a story that not only educates the reader about the Vietnam War but also evokes extreme emotion for the terrifying account of Ron Kovic's life. It allows you to think, learn, and feel as you read the pages of a young man struggling to remember his life before the war. Through Ron Kovic's straightforward emotion, flashback/dialogue, and random thought, a heartfelt story is opened and put on display for anyone to read. Born on the Fourth of July is a story everyone should experience at one time in their life.
