For African Americans, the N.A.A.C.P. has been a long standing organization that fought long and hard to ensure that the voices of African Americans all over the United States would be heard. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was founded on February 1th, 10 by a multiracial group of activists. Initially, they called themselves the National Negro Committee. The founders were comprised of black and white leaders. Ida Wells-Barnett, W.E.B. DuBois, Henry Moscowitz, Mary White Ovington, Oswald Garrison Villiard and William English Walling were the pioneers that started it all.
The premise that all men are created equal, initiated the tireless efforts of people of all races, nationalities and religious denominations. They were united for one cause. As I was growing up, I remember hearing many things about W.E.B. DuBois. Of all the names listed as the founders of the NAACP, his stands out the most. I decided to take a look at his life and learn more about his contributions to the NAACP.
William E.B, DuBois was born in 1868. He grew up poor in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. After completing high school, he enrolled in Fisk University. From there, he transferred to Harvard University, where he graduated cum laude. In

185, DuBois was the first African American to earn a P.h.D. from Harvard. There he taught history and economics. DuBois was a strong advocate for higher education for blacks. He founded the Niagra Movement in 105. This organization would be a precursor to NAACP, which was founded in 10.
In 110, W.E.B. DuBois left the university to become the NAACP's only black officer. Ironically, he was fired from the NAACP in 148 for his outspoken views on foreign policy. The government indicted in 151 for being a Soviet agent. Eventually, he was found to be innocent of those charges. He joined the Communist Party of the United States in 161, and later that year was invited by the left-wing president of Ghana to live there. William became a citizen of Ghana where he died in 16 the eve of the historical civil rights march on Washington.
Another name that stands out for me as an African American woman is Thurgood Marshall. I can remember learning things about him and the plight for justice and equality before, during and after the civil rights movement. Thurgood Marshall was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 108. He graduated from an all black high school. At the age of 16, he enrolled in Pennsylvania's Lincoln University, the nation's oldest Black College. He finished first in his class of 1 at Howard University Law School. After a short time in private practice, Thurgood Marshall moved to New York to become staff lawyer for the NAACP. Thurgood Marshall served as director and chief counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. He won most of his cases in front of the Supreme Court. His is
most notably known for his victory in the 154 case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. He persuaded the court to unanimously declare segregation in public schools. When I think of this, it brings chills to me. It seems quite absurd to actually be in a time and place where all men are not seen as equal. I can't fathom being in a separate school from some of my fellow students!
The unanimous decision by the courts was a precursor to the civil rights movement of the 150's and 160's. Marshall won six other Supreme Court cases which lead to the desegregation of public parks, swimming pools, local bus systems and recreational facilities. President Lyndon Johnson appointed Mr. Marshall to the Supreme Court in 167. He was the first African American member of the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, health reasons forced Marshall to step down in 11 from the Supreme Court. He died in Washington, D.C. in 1 from heart failure.
W.E.B. DuBois and Thurgood Marshall are two leaders that stand out for me when I think of pioneers who left behind a legacy that we all have a responsibility to recognize and carry on. Equality for all men and women is the ticket to everyone being free. Free from the binds of racism. As I perused the NAACP's website, I was amazed at the hundreds of contributions they have made to the plight for justice and equality. While it would be difficult to discuss all of them in a class presentation, I decided to list them at the end of my paper as they appeared in a timeline.
