Interviewer (facing camera) Goodmorning and welcome to "Today's Movies." I am here with Gary Ross, director of the latest film "Pleasantville." (Turns to Gary)

Gary Ross (waves to crowd) Thankyou.

Interviewer So, Gary, for the audience that has not yet viewed the film. What is it about?

Gary Ross "Pleasantville" is a movie about two different worlds and how they collide. In the modern world, David, played by Tobey Maguire, is a Nineties kid with a Fifties addiction, he likes to watch a television show, Pleasantville. While fighting with his egocentric and promiscuous sister, Jennifer, they get transported into this Utopia that David has always yearned for. Although upon arrival they discover that maybe Pleasantville isn't as perfect as it first seems. The movie observes that sometimes pleasant people are pleasant simply because they have never, ever been challenged.

Interviewer Fascinating! I've seen it and I definitely recommend it to the viewers. (Pause) I believe 'Pleasantville' focuses on a change in perspective. How did you show this change in the film?

Gary Ross The most obvious technique we used to convey a change in perspective was colour. The black and white world suggested that the characters there were not seeing the complexities or shades of life. The black and white colours of Pleasantville showed conformity and dullness. While the colour in the contemporary world symbolised that there were lots of ways of 'seeing' with shades of understanding. When these two worlds collide we used colour to symbolise certain meanings. The first character to witness a change was Skip, Mary Sue's boyfriend. On return from Lovers Lane he notices a red rose which we used to symbolise romance and from there colour started appearing everyone. We used colour to suggest that a character had engaged somehow emotionally in life.

Each character experienced a change of some sort because they acknowledged new and emotions and new knowledge.

Interviewer What characters are the strongest in demonstrating the idea of a changed perspective?

Gary Ross There are three characters that are vital in conveying the theme of changing perspectives. These were David/Bud, Jennifer/Mary Sue and the mother, Betty. At first David is against change although as he realises how naïve these people are he becomes the catalyst of change. Although, for the majority of the film he does not change himself, until the end. He shows courage by standing up for Betty, this is something he never had the nerve to do before, so this is a change in Bud. The character of Jennifer is at first very self and social orientated, she rides "rough shod", trampling on the values and ideals of others. Although in Pleasantville because of the abolishment of social pressures she begins to immerse herself in other activities, especially reading and therefore changes her previous attitude. Betty has also conformed to the stereotypical housewife of the 150's. She experiences a sensual awakening and with Bud's influence and society's changing attitudes Betty realises that she doesn't have to be what others want her to be. She stands up and faces her husband and faces society. But as I said, all characters experience a change in perspective, these three characters just convey it the most.

Interviewer What is the overall meaning of the film?

Gary Ross Hmmm well I suppose there are many meanings. I believe the most important is that perhaps not everything is always as it seems, I mean nothing is as simple as black and white is it? David viewed Pleasantville as an escape from his less than perfect life. With its white picket fences, wholesome family values, and stability, Pleasantville is seemed a much more civilised alternative to the real worlds economic upheaval, environmental turmoil, single-parent families, and bleak prospects for the future. As the film progresses, though, David realises that the people of Pleasantville are infact very sheltered, they don't know about the outside world, nor do even question the perfection of their own world. David discovers that no life is perfect, not even the lives in Pleasantville and he learns to accept his real life, the way it is.

Interviewer Wow! "Pleasantville" is an amazingly powerful movie. If you haven't seen it yet, please do. (turns to Gary) Congratulations on the film, Gary, it's a real success and thankyou for coming in today.

Gary Ross No problem, thankyou for inviting me (laughs).
