A Fear That Will Last forever

It was late afternoon on a Saturday in March; I am at home with my dad. The sun is shining so bright, the birds are singing, such a beautiful spring day. Tomorrow is Easter and I just baked a cake to take to church for the Sunday school class that I teach. A bunny rabbit, ears, nose, eyes, whiskers, so precise, the children will love it.

As I am in the hot kitchen, working away to create my special surprise for the children in my class, my dad is in the bathroom taking a shower. I am almost finished with the details of the cake when my dad comes out of the bathroom with a horrifying look on his face and stumbles to the kitchen. He is dressed only in his towel and is body is still wet from the shower. I looked at him and I immediately noticed that his face was as red as blood, covered with sweat beads and had a terrified look that I had never seen on my dad before. Something was wrong! I walked over to him and asked him if he was okay. His reply was "no, I don't feel right, I'm dizzy and my left arm is tingling". I have always been "daddy's little girl", my dad is my hero, my dad is invincible. I knew that I had to help him and I had to do it fast. "What do I do?" Thought and fears are running through my head so fast that I think I might faint. I was so scared that all I wanted to do was sit down, put my head between my knees and cry and hope that when I looked back up, it would all be a bad dream. I knew that I had to get myself together and help my daddy, he needs me.

I gathered my thoughts within a matter of seconds and helped him to a chair in the dining room. I immediately called 11 and quickly explained the situation. I was told that the ambulance would be there within a matter of minutes. "No, this can't be happening to my daddy, he is never sick, he is strong, why is this happening?"

Once I had my dad seated in the chair, I went to the bathroom to get a cold wash cloth for him, thinking that maybe he just got too hot in the shower and hoping this would help. I washed his face with the cloth and told him that the ambulance was on the way and everything would be okay. By now he had lost feeling in the left side of his body. I kept wiping his face with the cloth and telling him that everything would be okay. After I had calmed him and myself down, I went to his bedroom for clothes so that I could help him get dressed to go to the hospital.

The ambulance has arrived now. I watched the paramedics examine my daddy and put him on a stretcher and carry him out to the ambulance. " I want to go with him" I told the paramedics, "I won't leave my daddy!"

The sirens were loud and we were going so fast, although it felt like we were barely moving. Faster, faster I kept thinking to myself. They have to help my daddy.

We arrived at the emergency room and the paramedics took my daddy inside and into a room that I was not allowed to go into. I was told that I would have to wait in the cold, dreary, empty waiting room while the doctors examined him. It seemed like an eternity went by before the doctor came out to talk with me.

When the doctor came out to speak with me, he informed me that my daddy had experienced a stroke. The doctor assured me that with proper care and medication, he would be okay. Those were the most precious words I could have heard at that moment.

My dad would now be immediately transferred upstairs to the Critical Care Unit. I had to wait in the waiting room once again while the nurses got him situated in the unit. Finally after about an hour, I was told that I could see my daddy. Visits were limited to only ten minutes every two hours due to his critical status.

I never left the hospital the whole time my daddy was there. I visited with him every opportunity. Every night I would make myself a bed on the hard, cold floor in the waiting room. I had to be there in case something happened or he needed me. I couldn't leave him.

Everyday that went by, my daddy looked better. He gradually got his strength back. It would be a long road to recovery but he would get there, I knew it.

Once my daddy was strong enough, and his condition had improved, the doctors allowed him to go home. That was a wonderful feeling. I am taking my daddy home and he will be okay.

I treasure and appreciate my daddy more than anything in this world. This experience affected my life tremendously. I am married now with my own family but I make it a point to go and visit with my dad every day. I try to take care of him the way he has always taken care of me my whole life. I don't know what I would have done if my dad had not pulled through this.

Sometimes you tend to take things or people for granted. I always thought that my dad would be here forever. That day changed my life and made me realize that life is unpredictable and that you should cherish the ones you love and enjoy all the time you have together.

Although my dad has fully recovered now, the fear of losing him will always haunt me.

MPEG-4 Natural Audio Features

Just as in MPEG-1 and MPEG-, Audio compression is the core functionality of MPEG-4. However, the range of bit rates covered by MPEG-4 Audio and the compression ratio and sound quality have been improved much over previous systems and can be considered state of the art today. Besides this MPEG-4 has a lot additional new functionalities. Fraunhofer IIS provides technology supporting the following functions

•Bit rate scalability (hierarchical coding) allows a bit stream to be parsed into bit streams of lower bit rate which still can be decoded into a meaningful signal. The bit stream parsing can occur either during transmission or in the decoder.

•Bandwidth scalability is a particular case of bit rate scalability, whereby part of a bit stream representing a part of the frequency spectrum can be discarded during transmission or decoding.

Do my essay on compressioning CHEAP !

•Encoder complexity scalability allows encoders of different complexity to generate valid and meaningful bit streams.

•Decoder complexity scalability allows a given bit stream to be decoded by decoders of different levels of complexity. The audio quality, in general, is related to the complexity of the encoder and decoder used.

•Error robustness tools provide improved performance on error-prone transmission channels. These tools consist of codec specific error resilience tools and a common error protection tool.

•Low Delay Audio Coding allows for high quality coding of general audio signals with a delay of just around 0ms (important for real-time bi-directional communications).

The MPEG-4 standard is designed to play the role of a global multimedia language. Within its source coding parts, MPEG-4 embraces a multitude of natural and synthetic audio and video coding schemes and representations, providing a generic tool set for numerous applications for the transmission and storage of audiovisual signals. In addition, MPEG-4 introduces and supports completely new concepts of object-based user interactivity as well as a rich feature set to maintain a useful quality of service within error-prone channels.

Coding scheme

The basis of MPEG-4 video coding is a block-based predictive differential video coding scheme. The main techniques for compression are

•Division of the picture in 8x8-blocks or 16x16-macroblocks (MB)

•Motion compensated prediction

•Transform coding with discrete cosine transform (DCT)

•Quantization

•Run length and huffman coding for variable length codes (VLC)

There are two basic coding modes available

Intra-Mode

Both the spatial redundancy and irrelevancy are exploited with block based DCT coding, quantization, run length and huffman coding. Only information from the picture itself is used and thus every frame can be decoded independently.

Inter-Mode

Additionally, the temporal redundancy between the pictures in a video sequence is taken into account. A macroblock based motion estimation between two successive images is done allowing a motion compensated prediction of the current picture. Afterwards the predicted image is subtracted from the original image. The resulting difference picture is DCT coded, quantized and VLC coded. The motion vectors describing the motion of the blocks in the picture are necessary side information for the decoder and are also encoded with VLC.

Interframe coding usually requires much lower bit rate in comparison to intraframe coding (only about 10 to 0%) because there is less information in the difference picture than in the original picture.

MPEG-4 offers extensive systems part supporting scene descriptors, object descriptors and all related features, such as Intellectual Property Management and Protection (IPMP) provisions. This system allows for simple (old style) single source audio coding as well as complex, object oriented audio scenes. In order to make full use of all of the MPEG-4 features, a transport mechanism must support the MPEG-4 systems requirements.

In addition MPEG-4 defines the following transport formats, although other transmission systems with different application specific transport formats are possible as well

•MPEG-4 Flexmux. This is not really a transport format but rather an interface description between MPEG-4 and an arbitrary transport format. During the development of MPEG-4 it served with some additions as a simple file format.

•MPEG-4 File Format. This is the file format for MPEG-4 content. It is derived from Apples Quicktime™ media format and supports e.g. editing and streaming of MPEG-4 content.

•LOAS (Low overhead audio stream). This is an audio-only transport format for applications where an MPEG-4 audio object needs to be transmitted and additional transport overhead is an issue.

•LATM (Low overhead Audio Transport Multiplex). This is the multiplex part of the LOAS described above. Can be used if only a multiplex is needed.

•MPEG-4 over RTP (Real Time Protocol). This is protocol defined by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force), but there are several ways how to transmit MPEG-4 content over IP networks (e.g. the Internet) using RTP. One possibility to transmit MPEG-4 Audio is to use LATM and RTP.

There is much pain that is quite noiseless; and that make human agonies are often a mere whisper in the of hurrying existence. There are glances of hatred that stab and raise no cry of murder; robberies that leave man of woman for ever beggared of peace and joy, yet kept secret by the sufferer-committed to no sound except that of low moans in the night, seen in no writing except that made on the face by the slow months of suppressed anguish and early morning tears. Many an inherited sorrow that has marred a life has been breathed into no human ear. George Eliot (181-80), English novelist, editor. Felis Holt, the Radical, Introduction (1866).

What is pain? In the American Heritage Dictionary, pain is referred to as an unpleasant sensation occurring in varying degrees of severity as a consequence of injury, disease, or emotional disorder. The word is rooted in Middle English, from an Old French piene, from Latin poena, meaning penalty or pain, and from Greek pointe, meaning penalty.

Pain is a very realistic problem that many individuals face daily. People can wear pain on the outside like a mask, hiding them from the world, but it also can hide deep within them waiting to be freed by some emotional circumstance. Oddly enough, pain is one on the most feared apprehensions in the mind of humans, yet in some situations, is the most rejoiced. In this paper I will take a close look at pain, from its true meaning to real life occurrences in which pain is a reality.

We all know what pain feels like, for everyone has experienced it at one time in their lives. There are two dimensions of pain; the physical and the emotional pain. Physical pain is a sensation of pure discomfort. For example, when you are walking through your house and stump your toe on a table leg, you dont just stand there and say, That hurt. You yell loudly to the world (either nice or naughty) that you stumped your toe. The physical aspects of pain can vary greatly from a sharp prick with a shot to the excruciating pain of childbirth.

Custom Essays on Pain

Emotional pain has to be the most horrid, in my opinion, of all types of pain. It feels as if your insides are being wrenched out. When my girlfriend and I broke up, I felt as if she had ripped my heart out and I was standing there watching while she stomped on it. Where as physical pain will eventually go away, emotional hurt will always be lurking under the surface. When people are suffering emotional pain they resort to drastic measures, such as taking their own lives. Pain is a very difficult feeling to deal with.

I have had many painful experiences that I could share with you . Some of these changing my life eternally. One experience would be when I was in the army, and going through the hell referred to as basic training. It was a very trying experience, both mentally and physically. It challenged me with new things that, until that moment, I never knew life could possess. Im not saying that I enjoyed that drill sergeant spitting in my face or having my muscles so sore that I could barely walk, but damning as it may have been, it taught me one thing; discipline of the mind and of the body. If I had not gone to the army, I would not live by the standards that I do now.

There are also less painful experiences that only hurt at the time that they occur. Like the time that I busted my nose playing baseball while covering second base. This guy hit a ground ball that hit a bump, jumped up and popped me between the eyes. At the time it hurt something awful, but by the next day it was practically forgotten. It was forgotten so quickly, because is part of your daily regimen.

Pain has many positive effects and negative effects. You probably think I have gone off the deep end, but pain can be very beneficial. Such as a chiropractor who pops that spot in your back that has been bothering you for months. It can hurt at the time, but in the long run you will be thankful that you had it done. Another example would be childbirth. At the time of the actual birth, I assume, it is very painful. But, when that precious bundle of joy comes out and those motherly instincts kick in, you forget there was any pain at all. You see, without the pain, your child would not have been born into this beautiful world we live in. Even though many would disagree, pain can be a good thing.

Then, there is the needless pain around us. An example would be a terminally ill patient that has to suffer everyday through the agony of their disease. Watching their own bodies wither away into nothingness, while they can do nothing to prevent it. Or a little girl who was brutally raped because her tormentor enjoyed her pain. The little victim would not only suffer physical injuries, but also emotional pain that will scar her for life. These individuals did not wish this form of pain upon themselves; it just happened. In summary, there is no escaping pain. Pain is one of the realities of life, whether it be physical or emotional. It is one of those feeling that everyone in there life will eventually experience. There is no hiding from it because, like death, where ever you go, it will follow. Of all the different types of pain, no matter who you are, it will eventually change your life in some way. Life without pain would be like man without woman.

The Vietnam Conflict is a dark shadow in America's glorious history. By the end of the conflict 57,605 Americans had been killed, over 00,000 thousand U.S. military officials had been wounded, and America had spent approximately $165 billion ("Vietnam War" 4). The majority of Americans sought after peace indispensably. " Washington's struggle to bring the fighting to a close inevitably shifted the U.S. role in the conflict from ally and combatant to mediator between Hanoi and Saigon" ("The Shape of Peace" 15). The struggle would payoff on "…January 7, 17; various representatives signed the Paris Accords. America's war in Vietnam was over" (Detzer 17). The Paris Accords encompassed

… Four main points to the pact withdrawal of all U.S.forces from South Vietnam; release of all prisoners of war; an international 1,160-man peace keeping force; and recognition of the right of the South Vietnamese people to determine their own future (" Vietnam War" 4).

The first provision of the Paris Accord delineated a swift halt to the slaughtering in Vietnam, it read

A cease-fire will take effect in South Vietnam 4 hours after the signing of the agreement, and the U.S. will stop the bombing and mining of the north. U.S. and allied force will withdraw from the south within 60 days. There will be no introduction of foreign troops or arms for eihter side in the south, although each may replace damaged equipment. The U.S. will not intervene in South Vietnam's internal affairs ( "Peace is at Hand" 4).

Order Custom Provisions of Peace paper

In addition the U.S. was allowed to provide economic help to Saigon and to replenish its military equipment.

America had felt the loss of its' sons and daughters through the outcry by citizens. The second provision enabled the prisoners of war to return home safely. The second provision stated

All captured military and foreign civilian personnel-including the U.S. POW's-will be released within 60 days. The Viet Cong and Saigon will negotiate the release of South Vietnamese civilians detained in the south, among them thousands of Communist officials (" Peace is at Hand" 4).

The third provision gave power back to the Vietnamese people to decide how and whom they wanted to be ruled by. The provision setup a complex plan to help the Vietnamese people have total freedom to chose their way of life, without foreign pressures. Accordingly, the provision narrates

The Vietnamese people will decide their political future based in free and internationally supervised elections. The U.S. is not committed to any personality or political tendency. The Viet Cong and Saigon will negotiate the nature of the elections and a three-part National Council of National Reconciliation and Concord, operating on the basis of unanimity, will be established to organize them. The Viet Cong and Saigon will also negotiate the future disposition of their military forces and will try to reach agreement on all internal matters within three months(" Peace is at Hand" 4).

A provision would also be needed to settle military disagreements, hence the fourth provision read

Two military commissions will be formed- a four party commission of the U.S., Hanoi, Saigon and the Viet Cong, and a two-party commission of Saigon and the VC- to deal with disagreements over military affairs. An international supervisory commission will also be formed, and an international conference convened within 0 days (" Peace is at Hand" 4).

U.S. wanted a provision, which would keep the conflict from away from Cambodia and Laos. The fourth provision stated that the four parties would respect the neutral state of Cambodia and Laos, and would not use the Cambodia or Laos's land to approach the sovereignty of other countries. All foreign nations would also be forced to retrieve their forces from Cambodia and Laos, leaving them to solve their internal matters on their own (" Peace is at Hand" 4).

The Provisions of the Paris Accord were instilled to bring about peace to a war torn country serenely. The provisions gave all sides an equal meeting ground where they were content with, and where they could voice their concerns peacefully. Vietnam with the help of the peace provisions would be able to rebuild its torn interior and bring Vietnamese people together.

At long last the U.S. could really count on the end of the conflict. That prospect makes it appropriate for the U.S. once again to assess the terrible cost of its longest, psychically most debilitating war-the cost not only in lost lives and disabled bodies but in the country's troubled conscience, its shaken self-image and its uncertainty over its world role (" The Shape of Peace" 14).

Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery", raises many questions in the back of a reader's mind towards the destructive yet blind rituals of mankind. "The Lottery" clearly expresses Jackson's feelings concerning mankind's evil nature hiding behind traditions and rituals. She shows how coldness and lack of compassion in people can exhibit in situations regarding tradition and values. Jackson presents the theme of the short story with the use of symbols and setting. The setting of "The Lottery" supports the theme. Settings are constructed to help build the mood and foreshadow things to come. In the lottery though, the setting foreshadows exactly the opposite of what is to come. The story begins with a description of a seemingly cheerful environment. Jackson creates a comfortable atmosphere by describing the activities of the residents of the town. She describes children breaking into "boisterous play and their talk still of the classroom" (10). Men and women are gathered in the center of the town talking about farming and taxes or into gossip.

The date of the story is June twenty-seventh, which Helen E. Nebeker states in American Literature, has "symbolic overtones which alerts us to the season of the summer solstice with all its overtones of ancient ritual," (10). Jackson's description of the setting supports the theme of the story by showing how mankind is capable of cruel acts regardless of their environment. Symbolism in the story also supports the theme of "The Lottery". The very names of the characters in the story are laden with meaning. The names of Summers, Graves, Warner, Delacroix and Hutchinson hint at the true nature of the characters. Mrs. Delacroix's name means of the cross in Latin; therefore hinting at Tessie's sacrificial killing. Even tough Mrs. Delacroix seems to be a friend to Mrs. Hutchinson it is she who is shown to pick up the largest rock and promotes other people to stone Tessie. Mr. Summers' name symbolizes life but in reality it is he who is in charge of the lottery, which instead of giving life to its winner it gives death. Graves is the man who carries in the black box and the three-legged stool. His name hints to what will happen to Tessie Hutchinson. It is also from Mr. Graves whom the citizens get the papers from, therefore it is almost like he is the one who has the most influence over whose grave it will be next. Old Man Warner, as his name indicates, warns the villagers of the unknown danger of stopping the yearly ritual. The irony here is that even though the old are know for being wise, Old Man Warner seems to be a very ignorant and superstitious being that blindly follows tradition. The names of all the prominent characters in "The Lottery" support the idea that everybody hides their evil nature by way of hypocrisy.

Tessie Hutchinson's character also provides considerable information on the theme of the story. Her name reminds one of the historical Anne Hutchinson not only because of the name but also because of the small town setting. Anne Hutchinson was a willing martyr who died for her religion and was exiled from her town. Tessie Hutchinson though may at first of the story appear to be a very good-natured and good human being by the way she comes in to the story. She comes in jokingly kidding with a friend of hers about how she almost forgot about the lottery but as soon as she remembered came running. Tessie seems to be a willing participant at the start but when her family's mane is drawn she shows her true nature. Instead of trying to protect her children she instead demands that her married daughter take part in the drawing just to improve her own chances of survival. Mrs. Hutchinson is a perfect example of how evil exists in everyone and when pushed it can take a mother to risk her own child's safety. The symbolism found in the black box is a key point in understanding the importance of tradition in the theme of "The Lottery". The introduction of the black box into the story changes the mood and atmosphere of the crowd of people. The reason being that the box is what holds the key between life and death for each and every one of them. The black box embodies all the evil acts executed in the past and the ones to come. Even the color of the box is a symbol for evil. The box is painted in black, which has always been a universal symbol for evil and death. The box is also described to have been made "with some pieces of the box that had preceded it, the one that had been constructed when the first people settled down to make a village" (11). The villagers refused Mr. Summers' request of making a new box but they were so stuck in the tradition that they did not want anything to upset it. Helen E. Nebeker states that in the "box symbol, Jackson certainly suggests the body of tradition …which the dead hand of the past codified in religion, mores, government, and the rest of culture, and passed from generation to generation, letting it grow ever more cumbersome, and indefensible" (104). By showing the reader that the lottery has become a meaningless cat that people ignorantly follow driven by his or her own evilness, Jackson has proven the theme found in the story

In Our Time by Ernest Hemingway

I n Our Time is a collection of short stories published by Ernest Hemingway in 15. When the book was issued, it immediately received the highest praises of many famous writers such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, and others. All they were delighted with the simplicity and preciseness of the author's language he had used to describe a variety of complex emotions. The American version of this collection contained the following pieces "Soldiers Home", "Indian Camp", "A Very Short Story", "My Old Man", and " Big Two Hearted River". All of these stories are related because of a common theme of the "lost generation".

Having a glimpse into the author's biography, one would obviously find out that Hemingway survived WWI as a soldier. He had to go through so much evil and blood that he began to rank himself as well as other victims of war among the "lost generation", people who had no future. This idea is reflected in the book. The main character is Nick Adams, an autobiographical personage. By the way, Hemingway had a tendency to write about those things he had experienced himself or had a complete information about.

In the story titled The Three-Day Blow, Nick and his friend Bill spend an ordinary afternoon talking about baseball and books. They enjoy a bottle of Irish whiskey, and the time passes slowly as they talk and drink. This way of spending leisure time seems like a pastime that has no place in todays fast moving modern society. They seem to care about nothing else but their own company. These men neither want to react to any outside interference or they need any other means of entertainment to prolong their time together. Two of them and a good bottle of whiskey seem to be enough! Stories written by Hemingway are likely to have an old-fashioned kind of feel. However, at the same time they describe modern times. It seems they have some kind of moral dilemma in them. The characters constantly search for something but not all of them are really aware of what. They even cannot imagine the reason why destiny has brought them to the place they are in. In a word, they are the "lost generation".

Another story, Cat in the Rain, portrays a so-called happy marriage. Being on a vacation in Spain, the couple spends a day inside due to the bad weather (probably by the choice of husband). It seems that the wife is searching for something to fill in an unbearable void inside of her. She talks about a cat in the rain. This is a kind of her answer to the void. The wife goes out to find the cat but she fails to. She shares her impressions with her husband about the event. However, unfortunately, she realizes that this void has emerged because of her callous man, namely, due to the lack of his attention to the wife. The cat is just a metaphor for her desires and needs. Suddenly, someone knocks at the door it is a maid with a cat in her hands. Unexpectedly, the manager who gave it to the maid appears to be the person paying her the attention she needed so much. This story is likely to picture the lost generation of love between a wife and her husband. Cat in the Rain describes the ruin of marriage in Western society and how two people can easily part with each other in such a huge world. They are just another "lost generation".

The expression lost generation can be interpreted differently. Let's remember the short story My Old Man. This story is told by one mans son Joe. He tells about what living with his father has been like. Joe demonstrates a lot of pride and compassion towards his dear father. Generally, the father represents all that is good, firm, and reliable in the world where Joe lives. On the other hand, the son is really a part of his fathers generation even more than he is a part of his own. This story represents the lost generation because it stresses a tight relationship between a father and his son, something that is not a common social phenomena today. For example, it is enough to recall the moment when Joe hears someone call his father you son of a bitch. He starts feeling sick inside. The son cannot understand how anybody could call my old man a son of a bitch and get away with it. In the end of the story the father becomes a victim of a horse racing accident and dies. It makes Joe cry bitterly and feel a huge sense of loss. This is the loss not only of his fathers generation, but also of part of his own. Now he has to face his own generation which is unlike his fathers one. Therefore, Joe becomes the part of the "lost generation".

Due to all those hardships Hemingway had to experience in his life, he considered himself the member of the "lost generation" as well as thousands of other people. He had a gift to realistically depict his emotional experience through his own style of lean and tough prose. His background can still teach how to live and reveal truths. Due to all of this, he surely deserves to be one of the most prominent American writers of the 0th century.

Wisdom was the great gift of Ea (Sumerian god ENKI)to Adapa (adopted human son and priest to this god). His command was verily like the command of his Lord Ea. Broad understanding he had perfected for him to disclose the designs of the land. To him he had given wisdom; eternal life he had not given to him. In those days, in those years, the sage from Eridu, Ea created him as the model of men. The sage, his command no one can despoil. The capable the most wise among the Anunnaki (higher order of gods) is he; The blameless, the clean of hands, the ointment priest, the observer of rites. (10) With the bakers he does the baking, With the bakers of Eridu (patron city of Ea) he does the baking. Bread and water for Eridu he provides daily. With his clean hands he arranges the table.

Without him the table cannot be cleared. He steers the ship, he does the prescribed fishing for Eridu. In those days Adapa, the one of Eridu, [text break]

While his Lord Ea reclined upon the couch, Daily did he attend to the sanctuary of Eridu. At the sacred quay, the Quay of the New Moon, he boarded the sailboat.

(0) Then a wind blew there and his boat drifted. With the oar he steers his boat, He sailed out upon the broad sea.[...]

Then the South Wind blew a blast and toppled him. It drove him under to the home of the fish! South Wind, why pour out on me all of your venom? I shall break your wing! Just as he had spoken with his mouth, The wing of the South Wind was broken. For seven days, The South Wind did not blow upon the land. Anu (Sumerian god AN)calls to Ilabrat, his chief aide, Why has the South Wind not blown over the land these seven days?

(10) His chief aide Ilabrat answered him, My Lord, Adapa, the son of Ea, the wing of the South Wind, Has broken. When Anu heard this speech, He cried,Mercy! Rising from his throne Let them bring him here!

At that, Ea, He Who Knows What Pertains to Heaven, took hold of him. For Adapa, he caused him to wear his hair unkept; a mourning garb, He made him to wear, and he gave him advice, Adapa, you are going before Anu, the king. You will take the road to Heaven. When to Heaven, You have gone up, and have approached the Gate of Anu, (0) Tammuz (Sumerian god DUMUZI)and Gizzida (they were deities who had died and resurrected) at the Gate of Anu, Will be standing. When they see you, they will ask you, Man, For whom do you look so? Adapa, for whom, Are you clad with mourning garb? From our world two gods have disappeared, Hence I am so. Who are the two gods who from your world , Have disappeared? Tammuz and Gizzida! They will glance at each other, And will smile. A good word they, Will speak to Anu. Anus favorable face, They will cause to be shown to you. As you stand before Anu, When they offer you bread of death, You will not eat ! (0) When they offer you water of death, You will not drink. When they offer you a garment, Put it on. When they offer you oil, anoint yourself. The advice that I have given to you, neglect not the words, That I have spoken to you; hold fast! The messenger, Of Anu arrived there, Adapa, the South Winds, Wing has broken; bring him before me!

He made him take the road to Heaven, and to Heaven he went up. When he had ascended to Heaven and approached the Gate of Anu, Tammuz and Gizzida were standing at the Gate of Anu. (40) When they saw Adapa, they cried, Mercy! Man, for whom are you clad with mourning garb? Two gods have disappeared from the world, so with mourning garb, I am clad. Who are the two gods who from the world have disappeared? Tammuz and Gizzida. They glanced at each other, And smiled. As Adapa before Anu, the king, Drew near and Anu saw him, he called, Come now Adapa; wherefore the South Winds wing, Did you break?Adapa replied to Anu, My Lord, For the household of my master,in the middle (50) of the sea, I was catching fish. The sea was like a mirror. But the South Wind came blowing and submerged me, Causing me to go down to the home of the fish. In the wrath of my heart, I cursed the South Wind.

Speaking up at his side, Tammuz, And Gizzida, to Anu a good word, Addressed. His heart quieted as he was pondering. Why did Ea to a worthless human of the Heaven, And of the Earth, the plan disclose, Rendering him empowered and making a name for him? As for us, what shall we do about him? Bread (60) of life, Fetch for him and he will eat. When the bread of life, They brought to him, he did not eat. When the water of life, They brought to him, he did not drink. When a garment, They brought to him, he put it on. When oil, They brought to him, he anointed himself. As Anu beheld him, he laughed at him. Come now Adapa! Why did you neither eat nor drink? You will not have life! Ah debased mankind! Ea, my master, Commanded me, You will not eat, you will not drink! Take him away and return him to his Earth! [...]

is known to exist as a constellation of behavioral, emotional and personality characteristics including impulsivity, flattened affect, callousness, glibness, and diverse criminal history and diversity (Hare, 1XX; Cleckley, 1XX). The 'gold standard' for diagnosing psychopathic personalities is the Hare Psychopathy Checklist (Hare, 1XX), which is based on Cleckley's original description of the psychopath. This tool has been shown to hold a considerable amount of predictive and diagnostic utility, and has furthered the field of psychopathic research to an intangible degree. Nonetheless, despite defining the psychopath as an individual with a conglomeration of personality, affective and behavioral abnormalities, very little is understood about the psychopathic personality, per se. A handful of studies have been completed to investigate the personality characteristics of the psychopath, however, most of these studies have suffered from small subject sizes. For instance, Harpur, Hare and XXX, 1XX utilized the NEO-PI and determined that psychopaths showed heightened levels of XX and XX. Unfortunately this study only utilized XX number of participants, however, limiting the extent to which the findings can be relied on, or generalized to the psychopathic community at large. More recently, Lynam et al (1XX) performed a far more rigorous investigation into the five-factor composite of the psychopathic personality, and determined that the psychopath demonstrated high XX, low XX, and lower XX. This should be expected, as the psychopath has always been considered to be a callous, unemotional and inconsiderate persona. The present study sought, in part, to further research in this area by investigating the five-factor composite of 85 individuals who completed Levenson's self-report psychopathy scale. This scale has been shown to evince a commendable amount of reliability and validity, and has been shown to correlate with XX and XX.

For instance, individuals who score above 0 on the PCL-R have been shown to demonstrate increased levels of XX, XX, XX, XX and XX. In addition, these individuals have been consistently shown to demonstrate disabilities learning on passive avoidance tasks. That is, psychopaths appear to have an extremely difficult time learning to withhold a behavior in order to avoid punishment. This characteristic of the psychopathic personality has been demonstrated on numerous occasions, and has been used to explain the fact that psychopaths have a difficult time staying on the correct side of the law.

Help with essay on psychopaths

For a number of reasons, a number of self-report psychopathy measures have made their way to the scene over the past ten years. First, use of the PCL-R is difficult in non-institutionalized samples, because it is an extremely time-consuming procedure that generally relies fairly heavily on past case history. Second, the diagnostic utility of the PCL-R in non-institutionalized samples remains somewhat unknown. That is, it seems quite possible that significant differences exist between institutionalized and non-institutionalized psychopaths. Intelligence, for one, may play a role, in that the more intelligent psychopaths may be less likely to get caught. But the differences may be more extreme than that as well. That is, non-institutional psychopaths may, in fact, lead extremely productive and successful lives.

The most common self-report psychopathy measures include the PPI, the SPR, the LSRP, and the PCL-SD. Each has been shown to hold a significant amount of predictive and diagnostic predictability, and each has been shown to share predictive ability with the PCL-R. The LSRP, in particular, has received a fair amount of recent attention and experimental investigation. The advantage of the LSRP is that it claims to break down into the same two original factors as the PCL-R. Newman, Brinkley, etc (0XX) have shown that the LSRP predicts XX (passive avoidance?), and Lynam et al have shown that individuals scoring high on the SLRP show predictable scores on the big-five personality inventory (ie. Low C, low A, high E).

The present study sought to further investigate the predictive validity of the LSRP by investigating its ability to predict passive avoidance learning and big-five scores. I'm going to leave the rest here, because I have to see exactly what I have, what I've said, and what others have said in the past. But there is no question that I made some headway. I mean….almost pages already. Not bad for a drunken half-hour's work.

The film "Fight Club", with its critique of 10s American mass consumerism and its effect on the countrys majority of movie-going audiences should be considered a controversial film. A film of such immediacy and power would, in any other time or society, most likely have incited some form of public response. But it didnt. Not to my knowledge. Therefore, the most important question "Fight Club" is that in a society considerably tolerant of controversy, is it still possible to be controversial? When rebellion becomes mainstream, what is there left to rebel against? With these questions, the nihilistic virtues of "Fight Club" are revealed.

A possibility is that "Fight Club" is really not about revolution at all - but the impossibility of it. The films criticism does not stop at corporations or media - but even goes so far to criticize any organizations seeking to react against them. In this case, the films "Project Mayhem", which seemingly begins as disorganized chaos, anarchy, descends into men wearing identical clothing and chanting in unison the termination of individualism that is one of the key attributes of any revolution, be it fascism, communism, whatever. The argument of the film is that individualism as it is sold to us is not individualism at all, but a carefully crafted homogenization of the self, which serves only to benefit the powers that be. You can choose Apple Jacks or Lucky Charms. Theres your freedom. So instead of reacting against this by seeking true individualism, the film accepts that any notion of true individualism is false. So what does that leave one to rebel against? Nihilism, "a doctrine holding that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated", fits in nicely here. "Fight Club" aims at the idea that the values held by those in power and those wishing to rebel against them are worthless, and is hence nihilistic.

Tyler Durden's initiation of the narrator gives us an example by which Tyler initiates the rest of his army. As a means of living, Tyler steals fat from liposuction to make soap to sell women "their fat asses back to them", as the narrator puts it. Pouring lye, a chemical needed to make soap, on the narrators hand, causing it to burn, provides the narrator with the appropriate pain and fear of death by which Tyler, in essence, deconstructs his individualism "Our fathers were our models for God. If our fathers bailed, what does that tell you about God?" Tylers argument is that God hates man. "We dont need him" he tells the narrator. "We are God's unwanted children. Its only after we have lost everything that we are free to do anything," he tells the narrator. As nihilistic as it comes, Tyler Durden laid out his philosophy.

Tyler Durden is what some would consider an anarchist. He is distrustful of the status quo, and hides himself from it in a dilapidated building in a warehouse district, with none of the comforts of the materialistic lifestyle that the narrator was so dependent on (and choked by) at the beginning of the film. As part of his anarchist tendencies, Tyler was taken to inserting single frames of pornographic films into family movies while working as a projectionist. Tyler's "civil disobediences" become the central idea behind the Fight Club as it transforms from therapy group to guerilla army. The narrator begins to crumble he refers to himself, inspired by magazines left by the previous owner of Tyler's house, as "Jack" "I am Jack's raging bile-duct", "I am Jack's cold sweat"; as if the narrator's interaction with Tyler is beginning to disassemble any prior idea he had of the individual self. This is exactly Tyler's motivation for assembling his army, "Project Mayhem". For Tyler, modern man has "no purpose or place". He has "no great war, no great depression. Our great war is a spiritual war. Our great depression is our lives". Durden goes on to say "We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires and movie gods and rock stars, but we won't. And we're beginning to realize that. And we're very, very pissed off". Tyler's means of indoctrinating his army is classical in its outlook humiliation into submission, the eradication of the self. "You are not special" Tyler tells his army. "You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You are the same decaying matter as anything else." Nihilism to the core. Durden brought the idea of nothingness to his army, that they should follow him because they are worthless, and they should let everyone else know that they're worthless too!

"Fight Club" is a film that both succeeds and fails at what it attempts. Perhaps its failure is due in part to the (intentional?) ambiguity of its message. That its criticism raised no controversy is frighteningly indicative of the levels of cynicism that plague movie-going audiences in the United States today. Although perhaps the film's failures may be its strengths in its inability to side with either the status quo or with those who wish to overturn it, the film may be implying that which its narrator states earlier in the film that losing all hope is freedom.

It is not the American policy to be the aggressors. We should not be the aggressors. How is this going to prevent future terrorist attacks? The Bush administration is only provoking future terrorists to be born around the globe. Eliminating Saddam Hussein is not the answer to end terrorism but just a reason to fuel Anti-American resentment. We will have the terrible reputation of worldwide bullies. Who has more to gain from all of this? It is US. We will have a growth in our economy from the oil in Iraq. The Wall Street Journal recently noted" With oil reserves second only to Saudi Arabias, Iraq would offer the oil industry enormous opportunity should a war topple Saddam Hussein. But the early spoils would probably go to companies needed to keep Iraqs already rundown oil operation running, especially if facilities were further damaged in a war. Oil-services firms such as Halliburton Co., where Vice President Dick Cheney formerly served as chief executive and Schlumberger Ltd. are seen as favorites for what could be as much as $1.5 billion in contracts. Yes oil, seems part of the reason for war but it's not the entire reason.

We will have won an American protectorate, which is another word for a colony. I just saw an American soldier place the American flag. If it is not colonialism, it is invasion. Our country fought in the American Revolution to stop the act of colonialism from Britain. Yet 7 years later, here we are, doing the same thing that our oppressors were doing to us.

We say we are in Iraq to liberate the people from this evil dictator. Although the media has shown some Iraqi people congratulate and welcome troops, I want people to notice how many people congratulated us. Probably around 0 people---0 out of million people who occupy Iraq. I also want to know why the sudden interest in Hussein? Why now? Why not Fidel Castro who also is torturing his people? Why not North Korea? Furthermore, we cannot establish a government of democracy in a nation that we simply do not understand. They are not America. They are Iraq. The Iraqi people have done nothing to us. The people of the United States should be aware of the terrorism we have caused over there that the media has intentionally hidden from us. 40% of Americans are led to believe that Saddam Hussein is linked to the Al Queda terrorists that were PROVEN to behind 11. More Americans should be aware of this popular MISCONCEPTION and should stop using this as the excuse for going to war. Instead of clarifying that dangerous misconception, the government continues to reinforce it because they would gain support. There is no proof of Husseins involvement. The rest of the world has seen that... why cant Bush and his administration?? The United Nations did not even see any compelling evidence or clear objective good enough to go to war. How can the president defy their authority and their approval? We are disrespecting diplomacy and other countries. Now, the U.S, NO NOT THE U.S, I mean BUSH AND HIS ADMINISTRATION stands alone. The entire world is protesting because they are smart enough to see that nothing good will result of this. I just want to say to our follow brothers and sisters around the nation, that we, the Anti-War protesters, are not anything less than a patriot for opposing the war. One thing is clear, that we support the troops over in Iraq. They are one of the few brave people left in the world, and their deaths shall be honored. However, I do not support the reason for their death. Bush had clearly said You are either with us, or you are our enemies. How dare he deny the patriotism of more than half of the United States population? The only thing that distinguishes Bush from Hitler and his Nazis is Freedom of Speech. We are thankful for living in a country in which we can say that WAR IS WRONG. Freedom of Speech is what our country was founded on. So how can we be unpatriotic? We just oppose the Bushs Manichaean view of the world. I want to know how many sons or relatives does he have serving the country. I also want to know how much loved ones does some of the Pro-War Republicans have fighting in the war. I just hope that casualties are left to a minimum. I fear mostly for the aftermath that Bush has neglected to mention in any of his redundant State of the Union Addresses. I fear that the aftermath is much more frightening than the war itself. I also want to say that I still wear my American flag with pride and that I love this country. It is that LOVE for my country that motivates me to protest. I am defending the precious name of the United States of America from being tainted. I leave people with questions that have been failed to be answered. They are questions that I read recently in a New York Times editorial.

Are American ready to pay the cost in lives and dollars of a long-term military occupation of Iraq? to what end?

The Causes of The Cold War

Many young historians ask themselves how did the Cold War start? I for one am wondering. But, I suppose the answer to that is quite simple, not straight foreword, but simple.

The steps leading up to the Cold War are not as quite as chronological as they were in WW, when Hitler broke the Treaty Of Versailles, however, the pieces of the puzzle do fit together, and they do make a complete picture.

In 14 and 145 two conferences were held between President Roosevelt of USA, Prime Minister Churchill of Britain and Stalin of USSR, currently known as Russia.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on the causes of the cold war

The first conference was held at Teheran in Persia (14), planning to defeat Germany. The second conference was held just after the defeat of Germany at Yalta in the Crimea (145). There, the three leaders decided to split Germany four ways, with each bit being controlled by France, Russia, USA or Britain.

Before the Potsdam conference in 145 many changes took place. For one, Roosevelt died so his vice, Harry Truman replaced him. Also Churchill lost the election back home so Attlee was voted in as Prime Minister.

The Allies were growing more suspicious of each other. Stalin wanted complete control over Eastern Europe, therefore despising his approval of the free elections of Eastern Europe. Attlee and Truman suspected this. Furthermore, Stalin had the idea that because Attlee and Truman were new to the job, they would be weak leaders.

In August 145 at the Potsdam conference, three main decisions were approved of; new boundaries of Poland was agreed; Berlin as well as Germany had been divided now; and finally Surviving Nazi Leaders were allowed to have legal trials at Nuremberg for war crimes.

Tension was starting to build up between the USA and the USSR. This was because Stalin was determined to force communism throughout Eastern European countries. This, and the fact that USA deliberately did not tell the USSR about the development and use of the atom bomb on Japan, made each of then suspicious of each other.

Now that Stalin wanted Communism throughout Eastern Europe, he used the theory, 'Domino Theory' (which stated that when communism took over one country, the neighbouring countries were next in line to be threatened. Without help from USA, the non-communist governments could topple over, one after the other, like a line of dominoes) to help him. USA was afraid that communism might spread of all over Europe. President Truman was determined to halt the increase of it. As a result of his determination 'The Iron Curtain' was put up to separate the communist side (East) from the Capitalist side (West).

Along side 'The Iron Curtain' in 147 'Containment' was the US policy of preventing further spread of communism. It involved creating a network of anti-communist allies and sending military and economic aid to the USA's friends; the Truman Doctrine was created; this was a promise that the USA would help any country threatened by a communist take over. The Marshall plan was also set up; this promised American aid to European countries to help rebuild their damaged economies.

Even after these four measures of preventions had been set up, communism and capitalism still remained in conflict. This was one of the main causes of the Cold War.

In 148 the western allies agreed to a single government in their zones of Berlin and a new currency to help economic recovery. However the Soviet Union disagreed and was opposed to these moves since Stalin wanted to keep Germany as weak as possible. As Germany was on the side of Eastern Europe, it was controlled by the USSR. This meant Stalin could give orders that all land communication between West Berlin and the outside world should be cut off. This was known as the Blockade.

Over the year, the only way for West Berlin to obtain supplies from the outside world was by air. By 14 eight thousand tonnes of supplies were being flown into West Berlin every day. The Berlin Airlift was expensive and difficult but it worked. The people of West Berlin refused to communicate with the communist East Berlin and the Russians realised that, to interfere with the Airlift was likely to cause another war. Then finally in May 14 Russia re-opened land links.

The Berlin airlift caused the division of Germany into two parts. The Soviet zone became the German Democratic Republic (DDR) and the Western zone formed the German Federal Republic (FDR).

As you can see so far, the main causes that triggered the Cold War were the iron curtain separating capitalism from communism and also the role of the Berlin airlift had caused disruptions.

The Cold War was completely based on forming alliances and making plans for the future of Europe. There was no fighting with arms only the threat. This must have been because both sides had atomic weapons and hydrogen bombs. This made them afraid to attack each other as they might wipe out the nations of the world.

Sir Thomas More may have an 'adamantine sense of his own self', but he is clearly a naïve individual who placed too much faith in the law, and underestimated his enemies. As his belief of his own self was tested, More put aside his family, his country, and his monarch, ultimately betraying them.

Being the top lawyer in the country, More had a complex understanding of the machinery that operates the law. His outstanding belief in the law being a 'causeway upon which so long as he keeps to it' he may 'walk safely' dictated to him that he had done nothing wrong in keeping silent, for 'silence gives consent'. 'In the thickets of law', More was a forester, and this confidence backed up the previous argument of silence. His naivety in believing the law is also expressed in his conversation with Alice. He refers to his silence as a 'lifeline' which he didn't 'have to use, but it was comforting to have'.

More's silence over the King's divorce had branded him a traitor, but infact his belief in God had overridden the King. A central theme in 'A man for all seasons', Chapuys states that 'no man can work for two masters'. Remove More's understanding of the intricate processes of law, his status and wealth, all that remains is this 'adamantine sense of his own self', which in essence, is Thomas More's flame to uphold the practice of the Church. He explains to Norfolk that '…God is love right through, Howard, and that's myself'.

Unable to comprehend her own husband's thought and actions, Alice questions More's mysterious thoughts on the divorce. More's comforting statement that 'when they find I'm silent, they'll ask nothing better than to leave me silent' quells her anxiety, but he places them second along his belief, thus betraying them. The only person who could understand and More was Meg, for she had 'long known the secrets of his heart'.

The promise of the world at hand, More does not once fold under the pressure, and in return, his belief of himself is buried alongside his grave. Second to his belief, his daughter Meg desperately tries to persuade him to give in, but to no avail. Her four main arguments are brushed aside, and he teaches her a final lesson that 'when a man takes an oath, he's holding his own self in his own hands, like water. And if he opens his fingers, then he need'nt hope to find himself again'. Willing to sacrifice everything on earth for entry into heaven is all that matters to More.

Having opposed the King of England, betrayed his country, and leaving his family to struggle, this naïve man called Sir Thomas More tested his own belief and not once changed his position. This position was what gave him the title of a traitor and landed his head into a gruesome basket at the tower of England, but his legacy of integrity continues.

In her essay "Teachers' Classroom Strategies Should Recognize That Men and Women Use Language Differently," Deborah Tannen uses the subject of gender to reveal the differences between male and female conversational styles in classroom discussions. Tannen talks about how women tend to contribute less to hostile or debate-like conversations. On the contrary, men debate more in class because the conversational style reflects their own.

Tannen observes the classroom situation, the topic of debate and its format, and men and women's attitudes toward that topic. First, she explains that as females mature, they use the language to communicate with friends, to whisper and tell secrets. Tannen says that the "telling of secrets, the fact and the way they talk to each other, that makes them best friends" (Reid 8). She states that males are often more comfortable than females when publicly speaking. They tend to gather and communicate in larger groups related to the activities in which they participate. Tannen declares that men are "expected to use language to seize center stage by exhibiting their skill, displaying their knowledge, and challenging and resisting challenge" (Reid 8). Men are more comfortable speaking in large groups of people rather than small groups of people they know well.

Next, Tannen explains how men are more comfortable and familiar with the debate format of conversation than women. She states that "women are more likely to resist discussion they perceive as hostile…they don't ritualize opposition" (Reid 84). Women do not often quarrel for amusement as most men do. Tannen also talks about how the amount of conversation from women depends on the topic of debate.

Tannen also describes the experiment she performed in her classroom. She permitted the students to analyze their own conversations in randomly selected groups of people. This gave the introverted students the opportunity to interact and discuss their point of view without embarrassment or being uncomfortable. She was able to conclude that small-group interaction is vital to any debate class.

Although Tannen thoroughly demonstrates her knowledge of the conversational styles of men and women in the classroom, this essay is unfocused, disorganized, and uncorroborated. The main idea is clear at the beginning but begins to fade away as the article progresses. The disorganization of this essay causes the reader to wander off and lose track of the main idea. Her examples are not supported with clear, factual evidence.

Other points made throughout the essay minimize the main point of Tannen's article. Despite the fact that her essay discusses the distinction of gender in debates, Tannen spends four pages describing the experiment she conducted in her classroom. The experiment was divided into three different groups based on "the degree program they were in, gender, and conversational style" (Reid 86). The experiment is interesting, but the focus on the language and cultural differences in the experiment diminished the underlying focus. Tannen neglects to mention gender with respect to the issue. In addition to the experiment, her discussion with her colleagues distracts the reader and causes the reader to become sidetracked. Usually, essay conclusions emphasize the thesis and main idea, but Tannen's conclusion drifts quite a bit from the purpose of the essay.

Tannen's article is quite disorganized. At first her discussion is about conversational styles, which reveals what should be the topic of the paper. Then, she discusses about her conversation with her colleagues. Finally, she describes her classroom experiment. This structure jumps from topic to topic, leading the reader astray from the main idea. The disorganized format of her essay is revealed through her examples and supporting evidence of her assertions.

Though Tannen has a wide knowledge of the subject, she makes numerous statements, assumptions, and generalizations that are not supported with sufficient evidence. For example, Tannen assumes the reader has experienced or participated in a classroom debate. Also, she bases her assumptions on her classroom experience only, not that of other teachers. When Tannen does support her declarations, her evidence is unconvincing, vague, or too general. Her anecdotal evidence is tediously repetitive. In addition, Tannen's conversations with her contemporaries provide examples but fail to thoroughly support her claims.

In her article "Teachers' Classroom Strategies Should Recognize That Men and Women Use Language Differently," Tannen attempts to use her knowledgeable linguistic research to describe the different conversational styles between males and females. Not only is her essay disorganized but it also strays from the main idea and fails to provide persuasive evidence enough to support her thesis.

BREASTFEEDING IN PUBLIC

Women should have the right to breastfeed in public places without feeling intimidated or embarrassed for doing so. Breastfeeding in public is one of the most controversial issues in society today. An issue which is completely misunderstood as a disrespectful act of indecent exposure, when infact it is the most natural thing in the world. Women should have the right to breastfeed in public whenever they feel it is necessary. Breastfeeding is a healthy act for both mother and child for their well being. However the way in which a nursing mother conducts herself in public can alter the act of breastfeeding from a natural necessity to being viewed as a controversial obscenity.

Breastfeeding is a precious bond shared between mother and child. It is appalling that many public places in our modern day Australia still discriminate against women breastfeeding in public. In some cases women are even asked to leave the premises because they are breastfeeding. For example a recent survey showed that the majority of Australian restaurants and shopping centres were found to be unsupportive of nursing mothers, disapproving towards breastfeeding as they thought their customers would be offended and pushed away as they would feel uncomfortable. Which seems ridiculous due to the fact that breastfeeding in public is not in anyway illegal yet is viewed as an obscenity. How can breastfeeding be an obscenity?

Exposed breasts are everywhere, all over the media in movies, magazines even in television. But put a nursing infant anywhere near those breasts and suddenly people are offended. Do people ask women to cover up during breastfeeding or to move some place more private because the person is perhaps sexualising the act of breastfeeding rather than view it as a natural, nurturing act? For to long now women have been made to feel embarrassed for feeding their child. It is quite disturbing that in this day and age mothers are being prevented from doing what is natural. For those who are that uncomfortable-turn away!

Help with essay on Breastfeedind Women

One argument is that some women infact overexpose themselves whilst breastfeeding therefore it is understandable that some people may feel embarrassed or offended by this. Secondly some women choose to feed their child up to an age where the majority feel is unacceptable, for example a toddler who beckons to his mother to be fed on the breast could be seen as offensive. By the use of the modern breastfeeding bras now available and the simple act of draping a baby blanket or shawl over the shoulder all breastfeeding can be done in a discrete manner, whether or not the mother is in public. Respect is a two way process. A bit of discretion on the side of the nursing mother would promote more support from the general public.

It is a known fact that nursing mothers should feed their child in a calm and relaxed atmosphere. The introduction of more private rooms for nursing mothers in todays society would surely create a more harmonious relationship between the offended public, on the street and also in the workplace. But at what cost? Why should the mother feel she should be segregated from everyday life? Not only as she had to endure the huge life changing effects of motherhood but now she deemed as an unwelcome presence purely because she wants to the provide her child with the best source of nutrience mother nature has to offer. It has been proven that without doubt breast milk is by far the only best source of food for baby and not only provides every essential nutrient for the infant but will protect both mother and baby against most harmful diseases.

In addition to strengthening the bond between mothers and their babies, breastfeeding offers several significant health benefits. Babies who are breastfed have lower rates of meningitis, childhood leukemia, and other cancers, diabetes, respiratory illnesses, bacterial and viral infections, diarrheal illnesses, allergies and obesity. For these reasons the American Academy of Paediatrics recommends that breastfeeding continue for at least 1 months. This at least 1 months out of a womans life she must be dedicated to provide food whenever and wherever her baby dictates. Breastfeeding offers health benefits to nursing mothers also which include the reduced risks of breast cancer and other types of cancers, as well as osteoporosis.

As a society we must support the mothers of our country who are contributing to the well being of our nation by breastfeeding. By being more accepting of the perfectly natural act of feeding, which is no different from that which we have accepted in the animal kingdom surely tolerance and common sense will prevail and the rights of the breastfeeding mother will be recognised.

Gulliver's Travels The British Satire of Society

Gulliver's Travels, by Jonathan Swift, is an exceptional example of the attempts writers have made to bring about social reform. Jonathan Swift's stories of Lilliput and Brobdinag are placed on two extremities of culture, putting human frailty up to ridicule. Through the unassuming eyes of Gulliver, the astute reader can pick up on ideas used to delineate the troubles of British law and society. To accomplish his task, Swift threads throughout his novel creative imagery, allusion, and symbolism.

Imagery is applied in Gulliver's Travels very carefully to capture the reader's attention and play on the absurdity of the situation Gulliver finds himself in. Gulliver is in a different world, a land of beings only one inch tall and the sights, feelings, and sounds of the Lillipution's daily life is shown to be a true microcosm of British life. Swift writes,"I heard one of them cry Tolgo phonac; when in an instant I felt above an hundred arrows discharged on my left hand...they shot another flight into the air, as we do bombs in Europe."(Swift 48) Immediately, it is clear that the Lilliputions have taken on the warlike tendencies of the British imperialist. The language of Lilliput, even though it is presented as merely gibberish, has a clear military purpose like the English word fire or charge. The result of the efforts of these creatures, however, is of little circumstance to Gulliver who could conceivably "be a match for the greatest armies they could bring." (48) Like the kingdom of Lilliput, Brobdingnag also mirrors Britain, only the imagery makes the setting much more dangerous. Here a single fly is a huge disturbance that can drive a person mad. "They would sometimes alight upon my victuals, and leave their

loathsome excrement or spawn behind, which to me was very visible...Sometimes they

would fix upon my nose or forehead, where they stung me to the quick, smelling very

offensively." In a world where everything is amplified, it is hard to imagine how the most

trivial of matters is suddenly a significant force to be dealt with. Swift makes his

protagonist feel exactly the same way the Lilliputions must have felt when Gulliver could

have capriciously crushed them. This stark contrast in settings serves as a learning

experience for both Gulliver and the reader.

Gulliver's Travels has gained its label as a masterpiece because of its ability to

parallel humanity or allude to its historical shortcomings. The Lillliputian government

officials for example are chosen by their skill at rope-dancing, which the Lilliputians see as

relevant but which Gulliver recognizes as ridiculous. The representatives are literally

forced to jump through hoops in order to qualify for their positions. Swift means for us to

understand this event as a satire of Englands system of political appointments. Gulliver is

in the same way forced to defend his society in the land of Brobdingnag . In the giant's

view, Britain is a warlike nation filled with unsurpassed corruption. Gulliver manages to

maintain some sense of value in his native country in the face of the kings criticisms, but

his disputes seem so transparently groundless that each argument he gives for Englands

superiority serves only to emphasize the futility of his resistance. The kings assessment of

the Europeans as "odious vermin" is left virtually untouched.

The main way that Jonathan Swift perpetuates its message is through the use of

elaborate symbolism. Gulliver's size and strength is the largest of the symbols in Swift's

Gulliver's Travels. His physical bearing and power put Gulliver in a unique position in

Lilliputian society and give him obligations and capabilities far beyond those of the people

who keep him prisoner. The extreme power Gulliver encompasses can represent Englands

position with respect to the people it was in the process of colonizing. Like Gulliver,

England had the power to squash its foes with a single fist, but it also took a great deal to

restrain from doing great harm as Gulliver does. Size is also a symbol with respect to the

moral leanings of the Brobdingnagians and Liliputians. The Brobdingnagians are humans

who have achieved a massive level of moral achievement unlike the trivial and miniscule

Lilliputians, in whom the human vices of pride and self-righteousness are exaggerated.

The Brobdingnagians have constructed a society in which those sins are curtailed as

much as possible and they are not, as they are in England, set in the foundation of

government.

The teachings of Jonathan Swift are echoed forcefully in his novel Gulliver's

Travels. Through the use of imagery, allusion, and symbolism writers have been able to

mold public opinion and make the democracy the most desirable government of the

modern world. Perhaps Swift was the spark for the burning flame of justice toady.
