Diego Velazquez was born and baptized on June 6, 15 in Seville, Spain. Seville was the most populous city of Spain, and also a very wealthy part of Spain as well. It was the center of cultural activity and was known as "the New Rome." (Art Book Velazquez, 1) His father was Joao Rodriguez Silva from Portuguese origin, and his mother was Jeronima Velazquez from Spain. (Academic American Encyclopedia, Vol. 1, 1886) Diego took the last name from his mother instead of from his father, which was very common then where they were from. He was the oldest of seven brothers. His family moved to Seville from the Portuguese town of Oporto about a decade before Diego was born. (Art Book Velazquez, 1)

During his lifetime, Velazquez had two main mentors. The first was Francisco Herrera the Elder. He was described as "a strict man without character." (Velazquez, 18) He was Velazquez's apprentice when he was about 10 years old. Although, Herrera's inflexible character drove Velazquez to turn to another mentor, Francisco Pacheco. They formed an apprenticeship in 1610. Francisco Pacheco was Seville's leading teacher of painting. The contract they had lasted from 4-6 years. (Art Book Velazquez, 1) It also provided Velazquez with plenty of food and clothing. During this time with Pacheco, Velazquez developed his own style- He preferred to draw "lively young peasants" instead of just copying from prints, as most apprentices would do. (New Standard Encyclopedia, Vol. 16, 187) Later on, Velazquez went on and married Pacheco's daughter, Juana. Together, they had two daughters.

After this, Velazquez went on two trips to Italy- One was in 16 and the other was in 164. There, he found inspiration for several religious and mythological paintings. (New Standard Encyclopedia, Vol. 16, 187) While in Rome during his second trip (164-1650), he painted his famous portrait of the Pope Innocent X. The Pope was so pleased by this that he sent Velazquez a gold chain and portrait medal. (The New Book of Knowledge, Vol. 1, 186)

Diego Velazquez was a 17th century Spanish painter and the first in rank of Western artists. He was an early realist. He had technical skill in composition and his majesty of light, shading, and coloring caused him to be called "the painter's painter." (Academic American Encyclopedia, Vol. 1, 186) He used broad, free brush strokes. In his portraits, he eliminated all unnecessary details, showing the figure in bold relief against a fainted background. (The New Book of Knowledge, Vol. 1, 186) He wanted himself to be known as a genre painter, which means "one who mirrors common life." (New Standard Encyclopedia,

Vol. 16, 187) He wanted to show life as he saw it, and he painted people in settings in which they lived. He captured the noble and special qualities of life in his paintings. (The New Book of Knowledge, Vol. 1, 186) Diego Velazquez died on August 6, 1660 from being overworked.

The overwhelming theme in "Of Mice and Men" is that each man kills the thing he loves. This idea deserves great contemplation, which is one thing that has made this novel a lasting classic. However, this is not a completely true statement. To say each man kills the thing he loves is an overly dramatic idea, entirely implausible. If, for the sake of clarification "man" includes the entire human race if would be impossible. Is man more likely to kill the thing he loves, yes; for each man to do that, no. Two of the main reasons that people kill the thing they love are because they are either protecting it from a worse fate or they are experiencing an overpowering amount of emotion.

In the novel George kills Lennie because he loves him. He is trying to protect him from a worse fate of either being hunted down or thrown into a jail where nobody would understand him. It is a difficult choice for George, but he understood it was the most humane thing he could have done. It was an easier passing for Lennie; he was calm and right with the world. This is akin to when a relative needs to remove a loved one from life support. Many people believe it is better to have the person they love be removed from the pain of living than to have to live a half life.

When an emotion becomes too much to bear it can lead a person to kill. There are many such stories coming out of the WWII Jewish Ghetto's. When the SS Officers would start searching the emptied houses mothers in hiding would often accidentally smother their children to keep them quiet. The overcoming fear of being found and killed made them perform a very rash act. How many stories has the public been feed about lover's quarrels that end in death? One person decides to leave and the other decides that if they cannot have them nobody will. There is either too much love or too much blind panic pressing in on a person that would make that decision.

Love is a difficult thing, as seen in the relationship displayed by George and Lennie. What makes the theme not entirely accurate is that George would never have killed Lennie if he did not have to. Lennie helped keep George's dream of a farm alive, without Lennie George would have been just another drifter. George killed him because he loves him, but on same wavelength if he had not been forced he would not have killed him. There are people in the world who live for one another; they would never kill the other person. If given the choice many people would give their own life over someone they loved.

In summation each man does not kill the thing he loves. Though, if we are driven to it by intense emotion or extreme circumstance we will make that ultimate sacrifice. The problem with this is each person controls their own actions, you choose everything you do. Sometimes people choose to find an alternative to killing.

Ben Frankiln was a really nice man If Homer had been playing baseball in 600 B.C., I believe he would have had the Gods choose the chore of learning switch hitting as the punishment for Sisyphus, rather than ceaselessly rolling the boulder to the top of the hill for eternity

In theedition of USA Today, experts were asked to vote on the most difficult task in all sports. The top choice was attempting to hit a baseball. The batter has approximately 0.4 of a second to determine if he should swing and in what direction during the sixty foot six inch flight of the ball . In addition one must consider the physics of how various factors will influence flight of the sphere as it approaches the batter. Players practice their entire life swinging a bat from their natural right or left handed position, with the hope of being successful three out of ten times.

This low success rate is further influenced by the ability of the pitcher to throw various pitches that curve or break from north to south and move east to west at the last possible moment. In the early twentieth century, it was determined that it is easier for a right handed batter to hit a breaking ball from a left handed pitcher and visa versa. The reasoning being that most breaking balls will thrown by the opposite handed pitcher will move towards the batter, rather than away from him. This motivated batters to learn how to switch hit. Being able to bat both right and left handed obviously increased the value of any player who was able to accomplish this skill. He could then increase his odds or batting average by being as successful batting against a right or left handed pitcher. However, now we have taken the most difficult task in all sports, and made it even more difficult by attempting to perform it from a different hand and position than you have ever performed in your entire life. It would be like

A pilgrimage is a journey to a holy place, which helps people grow in the knowledge of God.

For example Muslims go to Mecca to visit the birthplace of Mohammed.

Jesus himself was a Jew so he understood the importance of pilgrimage and got involved with them. Jerusalem is a very holy city for Jews as this is one of the most famous towns associated with Jesus. Jesus took the trip to Jerusalem for the Passover and this is where he was arrested and killed.

Pilgrimage for the last two thousand years has been very important to Christians. Many of them wanted to visit the Holy Land and follow the steps of Jesus.

I will try to explain the various approaches to pilgrimage by referring to the popular Marian sites of Lourdes and Walsingham. Marian sites are places where the Virgin Mary has been sited, and Catholics have always viewed Mary as somebody who can help them get closer to God.

Lourdes is a town in the south of France which became famous in 1858 after a series of apparitions by the Virgin Mary to a poor villager named Bernadette, at the rock of Massabielle, which today is known as the grotto.

The sightings began on 11th of February, and ended on 16th July, a total of 18 appearances occurred during these dates. It wasn't until the 16th apparition that the lady gave Bernadette her name saying Immaculate Conception (Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou). This confirmed what many had thought, it was Mary herself who was appearing to Bernadette.

From 1858 Lourdes has attracted lots of pilgrims from many nations and faiths. The majority of them follow similar practices at the shrine. Praying is very important to Christians as it brings them closer to God. People pray at the grotto at the very point where Mary was sited. A statue of Mary stands at the very point where she was sighted in 1858.

Water has always had great importance to Christians, as it is a symbol of new life and purity. During the th apparition on 5th of February, Bernadette unearthed a spring which has flowed through Lourdes ever since. Today pilgrims can drink this water and take it home just as Bernadette wished. Pilgrims can also bath in the water.

Walsingham in Norfolk is another Marian shrine with a longer history than Lourdes. A man named Richeldis de Faverches who built a house there to remind people of the house in Nazareth where the annunciation occurred founded it in 1061.

Pilgrims from all over the world visited it came to the house. For 50 years Walsingham lost its status as a place of pilgrimage. In the late 18th century the Slipper Chapel was restored and in 14 the Catholic bishops named Walsingham as the national shrine of Our Lady. From that day forward more people visited Walsingham each year.

In the years following 1815, the four great powers, Britain, Russia, Austria and Prussia, agreed to hold periodic conferences to discuss matters affecting the Vienna Settlement 1814-1815, and to discuss the maintenance of order in Europe which was destroyed by the Napoleon Wars which lasted for over 0 years.

In the year 178, the French revolution broke out, a series of revolutionary wars began, leading to the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. By 1808, Napoleon had gained control of almost all of Europe.

During his reign, the reforms he carried out weakened the old absolute monarchies and helped to spread the powerful forces of liberalism and nationalism. However, because of his conquests, the Balance of Power in Europe was destroyed.

After the defeat of Napoleon in the Battle of Waterloo 1814, the great allied powers Britain, Russia, Austria and Prussia faced the problem of re-organising Europe. Therefore, they met in 1814-1815 at the Congress of Vienna, drawing up a settlement, which they hope to prevent one power from becoming too powerful in the future, and which would maintain peace.

Buy The Congress System term paper

This settlement was the first attempt to establish a general peace in Europe by co-operation between the major powers. The idea of collective security called "Concert of Europe" was also developed. It suggested the great European powers co-operate to safeguard the stability and peace of Europe. This can be done by settling disputes by active diplomacy and discussions. This arrangement became known as The Congress System, because the powers worked through international congresses and also putting the ideas of the Concert of Europe into practise. There are four major congresses held. They are

ɨ Congress of Aix-la-Chapelle 1818, where France was admitted to the Quintuple Alliance

ɨ Congress of Troppeau 180, which was a response to revolts in Spain, Portugal, Piedmont and Naples

ɨ Congress of Laibach 181, where Austria and Russia were ready to send soldiers against Italian revolts.

ɨ Congress of Verona 18 , when French troops were used against rebellion in Spain and which Britain withdrew from the Quintuple Alliance afterwards

After the above congresses held in the period 1818-18, the Congress System finally ended, mostly because of the disagreement between the Allies. With the collapse of this system, the powers then carried out their own policies independently.

To conclude, we can assess the Congress System with three points. Firstly, it was short-lived and only an informal system. However, it set up a good tradition of using international conferences to settle disputes. Therefore it represented the first attempt to promote international co-operation. Most importantly, the rivalries also made a "balance of power" between the great powers possible. There was relative peace and stability in Europe until the First World War in 114.

Analytical Essay on 'Race Relations'

In the poem, 'Race Relations' by Jean Burgess the main theme is the discrimination against the little black girl, we know this because the two little girls were playing together in their own little world doing no harm until the white girls' mother started cursing her daughter for interacting with a black girl even though they were doing nothing wrong

This was conveyed to us because before the mother realised her daughter was playing with a black girl she was calmer.

A main idea portrayed in this poem is the parents' influence on the little girl, as she did not see anything wrong with playing with the black girl and would not have seen anything wrong with it if her mother had not yelled at her for doing it. We know this as the Jean Burgess writes about the little white girl leaving as 'Dragging her feet Mary moved slowly, moved towards her mother' so we realise Mary doesn't want to leave because she is dragging her feet and also being forced to leave by her mother.

Buy cheap Analytical Essay on Race Relations term paper

Another main idea is the whites showing prejudice towards the little black girl as she has not shown an act in which the white parents could form this prejudice against her. Evidence of this prejudice against the black girl is 'How he'll scold you, and serve you right, who have no proper pride.' This shows us that the mother is marginalizing the little black girl as she has judged her by thinking she has no right to play with her daughter.

The children were very happy playing together, we know this because when they were playing together they did not notice anything too busy building their sandcastles evidence of this is the whole first and second paragraphs, 'They played behind the garden wall, the white child and the black; building in the sand the palaces, the bridges and the tall pinnacles of their enchanted land.

They did not feel the wind was growing chill; They did not see the sun had left the wall; this shows us how they were in their own little world and enjoying each others company so we understand there was no reason to stop them playing together. They writer conveyed this by emphasising their obliviousness to not noticing the wind becoming colder, and it becoming dark.

All the main themes in this poem tie in with the theme very closely since they all relate back to discrimination of the black girl as she does nothing wrong to deserve the treatment she gets from the mother also when the little white girl spends time with the black girl they become good friends and are separated by the parents influence, I think Jean Burgess tries to get us to realise this is why we are not all friends as we judge people by what we are influenced by before we give them a chance to get to know them.

Iliad

The existence of Gods, their connection to human beings, and human emotions are greatly expressed throughout "Iliad", an immensely interesting Greek poem by Homer. What is especially interesting is the appearance of the bravest heroes on each side, Achilleus in Greece and Hector in Troy, which separates the "Iliad" into antagonistic feelings; one of them being negative human emotions and the other one expressed through tender-hearted humanism.

Even though the cause of war is Troy's fault in taking Helen from Menelaos, readers experience that their sympathy goes to the Trojans. The reason for this is led by the contrasting description of characteristics between Achilleus and Hector. Achilleus is depicted as an overly egotistic and violent person; his mind is full of rage and anger. For example, Achilleus gets angry after a quarrel with Agamemnon. He thinks the king of Achaians made a huge mistake about taking Achilleus's war triumph gift, Brises, instead of returning the King's girl, Chryses, to be forgiven by the Apollo God. In the end, Achilleus grows hatred for Agamemnon; and then he tells the story to Thetis, his mother, who is also the daughter of Sea God. Because she loves her son so much, she accepts Achilleus's proposal to never give the victory of the war to Greece until Achilleus participates in the Troy war. After this, many soldiers of Achaians die and are injured including Agamemnon and his best warriors. So, Agamemnon decides to get help from Achilleus and also offers very valuable gifts. But Achilleus's mind is still full of anger and he says he will never forgive Agamemnon. However, the death of his lovely companion, Patroklos, makes Achilleus change. He begins to feel sad and his anger turns towards Hector instead of Agamemnon. Finally, Achilleus fights in the Troy war, so the victory of the war goes to Greece.

In contrast to Achilleus, Homer describes Hector not only as a great war hero but also as a tender human being. When he comes back to his palace from the war to take a short rest, he meets his family where his actions are no longer those of a warrior's. He is a soft-hearted human being who loves his son and wife. He also worries about the town of Troy, the Trojan wives, and their innocent children. Futhermore, he really wants to finish this long and cruel war in a peaceful manner by returning Helen to Greece so that all Trojans live peacefully with their lovely family. But that was just his hope; he could not stop the Troy war and his destiny fell into Achilleus's hands.

In describing the two contrasting characters, Achilleus and Hector, Homer tries to explain the two poles of human emotion. Readers see negative human emotions, which are anger, detestation, and violence, through the actions of Achilleus. Then, on the other hand, Homer reveals good human emotions through Hector, who loves and cares for his family and his people. As a result, readers sympathize with Hector and his people regardless of the cause of the Troy war.
