The play Antigone, by Sophocles, shows courage and strength. "Impossible things should not be tried at all" is a discouraging quote stating that one should not work for something that he or she is not capable of doing. The impossible can become possible in many ways.

By walking on the Moon, our society has shown the world that the impossible can become possible. For example, it was a big risk when NASA sent their first astronaut into space. This proves that if one can set his or her mind to a certain goal, they can accomplish anything and make the impossible possible by just trying; by taking risks one can get farther in life and succeed. This explains that humans have evolved to a better existence. In addition, when Armstrong walked on the moon it became a worldwide event. This reveals that going for those dangers of life can improve not only the society, but also the accomplisher as well. This proves that our world has become better because of the people that make the impossible possible. Eventually, in the future, our civilization will keep advancing and overcome what today has already accomplished.

Trying to make the impossible possible has its consequences. For example, trying to jump into Niagara Falls. This shows that it can be possible, but dangerous by resulting in death. This verifies that impossible things cannot always be possible. In addition, people today face the danger of impossible things. This confirms that even though it is said to be impossible, it can eventually be made possible. This explains why the world is so advanced and developed today. Everyone can learn from their mistakes.

Through Antigone the impossible is trying to become possible. For example, Ismene refuses Antigone to give Polyneices a proper burial because it is against the law. This shows that Antigone is willing to risk her own life for the sake of her brother to find peace. This proves that the impossible, breaking the law, can still be carefully committed. In addition, when Antigone and Ismene fight about Polynieces' burial, Ismene claims that Antigone cannot do it. This makes Antigone want to risk it even more to show her sister. This shows that Antigone is not afraid of danger even if it is death; she does not fear the impossible. Even though Ismene, in a way, wants to help Antigone, she cannot face the chance of getting caught.

Through out the play, overcoming impossibilities is the obstacle. Making the impossible possible has its consequences. Learning from our mistakes is one of the reasons why the world is so advanced today as opposed to Greek times. Walking on the moon was one of the impossibilities that helped the world advance. Since the 60's we have come so far, imagine what we can do in the fifty or so years.

My dreams and hopes for the future.

Good afternoon everybody. You already know, my name is Alex.

I was absent the class last Thursday that I couldn't have to give this speech. So, I'm standing here right now.

I have been living here in Seattle for the past two months. I came here to be with my parents as they are both getting old. It was not an easy decision for me to leave Taiwan, but I am sure that many people here had done the same.

Order Custom Essay on My dreams and hopes for the future.

Before I came here, I worked in the Taiwan television industry as a producer of many local television programs. It is a job that I had been doing for 0 years. There are many advantages to working in this industry. For example, I have met and become friends with many television and movie stars, and I have had the opportunity to travel to many places. But there are many disadvantages also. I have often had to work for days without any sleep, just to meet deadlines to get the show out. As the saying goes, ¡§the show must go on¡¨. But now that I am here, I find that I have a lot of time and not a lot to do. This is why I am happy to be in this school studying English. It gives me something to work on and keeps me busy.

When I thought about the subject of this speech, I though about how many of us have had the dream of being a star at one time or another in our lives. In my country a very popular pastime for people is to go to the local KTV, or karaoke as it is known here, where they can live that dream for a little while. But what I enjoy more is the behind the scenes work that takes place to make people stars. Maybe it's because of my work, but that after watching a movie I usually find myself talking to friends about camera angles, or how a scene was edited. We may not always agree on if a certain movie was great because of its story, or the actor's performance, but we can usually agree on if a scene was filmed beautifully, or if the color was just right. I guess that is why people say, ¡§a picture says a thousand words¡¨.

Being here in America, the home of Hollywood and some of the biggest and the best movies in the world, my dream, and I suppose the dreams of everyone else in my line of work, is to be able to work with the best in the industry, People such as Steven Spielberg or George Lucas, for example.

I'm guessing that everyone would love to have a chance to work with the best in their field, whatever that may be. The important thing is how we can achieve that dream. For me, the first step is to take this opportunity to improve my English, and be able to just watch a Hollywood blockbuster without having to read the subtitles.

Someone once said ¡§that all journeys, no matter how great, begin with the first step.¡¨ I am now one step closer to my dream.

Thank you everybody for have patients to listen my speech. Thanks.

"The Lottery" is an extraordinary story filled with mysterious traditions that are held in high honor. In her story, Shirley Jackson uses foreshadowing to open the reader's mind to the ides that things are not always as innocent as they appear and beneath that innocence evil can arise.

Shirley Jackson at the beginning of the story lets the reader make his or her own interpretation of what seems to be an innocent game. She tells the reader that the boys from the town "made a great pile of stones in one corner of the square"(Jackson500). Since the atmosphere seems joyous with children laughing and playing the reader is left to feel that nothing out of the ordinary is taking place. When the reader finds out that the adults go no where near the corner that the stones are in and that the boys are putting some in their pockets for an event that is going to take place later an easy feeling is left with the reader.

With the whole town gathered in the Town Square the children begin to join their parents in the center for what comes off as an enjoyable meeting. Mr. Simmons then brings out an old black box made of wood and places it on a three-legged stool in front of everyone. The reader is then told that "The villagers kept their distance, leaving a space between themselves and the stool, and when Mr. Simmons said, 'Some of you fellows want to give me a hand?' there was a hesitation before two men, Mr. Martin and his oldest son, Baxter, came forward…"(Jackson500). With this one statement, Jackson lets the reader know that something is wrong with the black box. It also leads the reader to an assumption that the black box means more to the town's peoples lives than is being told.

After the lottery is conducted and all the families have drown the reader is told that Mr. Hutchinson has selected the slip of paper with the black dot on it. Though the reader does not understand what that means he or she can figure out that it is not good when Tessie Hutchinson starts shouting "You didn't give him time enough to take any paper he wanted. I saw you. It wasn't fair!" (Jackson50). This outburst by Mrs. Hutchinson lets the reader see that the black box and lottery has a bizarre and sinister motive besides what has already been told. This statement also foreshadows the horrifying and bringing the whole story together.

Do my essay on The Lottery CHEAP !

The conclusion of "The Lottery" reveals the dark secrets of the black box when the town's people pick up the stones the boys had pilled up and begin stoning Mrs. Hutchinson. The reader now knows that the black dot represented death an with this gothic twist Jackson brings the reader to a shocking realization that this particular lottery was not just a game of chance but a ritual that chanced the very existence of life for these people. This mysterious tradition shown through foreshadowing by Jackson shows everyone who reads "The Lottery" that even though sometimes things appear innocent that innocence could very well be hiding an evil existence beneath it.

The Brady Bill is a bill that was started to reduce gun violence. The Brady Bill requires background checks, and waiting period's priory to purchase of a gun. On March 0, 181, John Hinckley attempted to assassinate the President, and shot President Reagan, Mr. Brady, and two law enforcement officers. Although seriously wounded by the gunshot wound to the head, James S. Brady survived. Now Mrs. Brady has been a fierce supporter of gun control. The Brady Bill may stop some people from buying guns, but there are ways around it.

The Brady Bill requires waiting periods and background checks. The waiting period can be seen as a cooling off period. If a person were going to commit a crime with a gun, they would have time to think about what they are doing; and see it is a bad decision. The waiting period also gives time to the store to do a background check on the customer. The background check is to make sure that no felons or mentally unhealthy people buy guns. The waiting periods and background checks also make it more cumbersome to buy a gun. In the time it would take a criminal to buy a gun, the authorities might have been notified of him or her; and be able to prevent it. Although the Brady Bill may sound like it prevents the wrong people from buying guns, there are loopholes.

The Brady Bill cannot stop a determined person from getting a gun. First there are gun shows, were there are no background checks or waiting periods. Any person at the gun show over the age of jurisdiction on guns can buy a gun. Person to person gun sales are also another way to go around the Brady Bill, if a person wants a gun, they will find some one willing to sell them a gun. Repeat misdemeanors can also still buy guns, so the Brady Bill cannot stop all criminals from buying guns.

The Brady Bill in my opinion is an infringement on my Second Amendment rights. The Second Amendment states that the people have the right to bear arms. I do not think that the public should have the right to bear automatic weapons. I also believe senators and congressional representatives may not know the difference between a semiautomatic deer rifle and a machine gun they see in a movie. Even though the government says they only do background checks on people trying to buy a gun, they will have records of the people that have bought guns. The government has no right to keep a computerized list of the people that have purchased guns. In conclusion the Brady Bill is just one of the infringements on the publics freedom. The Brady Bill is logical, but all it does is provide more reasons to not buy a gun from a gun shop.

Iago from Shakespeare's Othello

The character Iago from Shakespeare's Othello is evil incarnate. Shakespeare compares Iago to the devil. "When Devils will the blackest sins put on, they do suggest, at first with heavenly shows, as i do now." His moral and spiritual depravity is evident throughout the play. One characteristic of a devil is to assimilate himself with people ; the devil acquires their trust only to use them for his narrow self interest. Iago forms superficial relationships with most everyone. He calculates his every move to optimize his advantages, "That Cassio loves her, I do well believe it; that she loves him, 'tis apt and of great credit" (1156). He gains their trust and pits them against each other. His actions have great impact.

Perhaps the best illustration of Iago's reprobate nature is his empty relationship with his wife, Emilia. Healthy and mature Relationships in life require trust, A willingness to forgive, understanding, and a foundation of love which is built on non-material things . Iago's relationship with his wife share none of these qualities.

Emilia is the wife of a devil. Iago is insincere to his wife . He neglects her. Emila's single focus in her marriage is to be recognized by her husband. She has no self esteem. She allows herself to become morally bankrupt like her husband. She begins to believe that success is the key to her marriage with Iago, so she forces herself to project an image of success at all times. She assumes a Machiavellian outlook on life when she admits to Desdemona that she would sleep with another man to make her husband more powerful, "The world is a huge thing; it is a great price for a small vice" (117)

In many ways Iago and Emilia have a relationship that parallels Kevin Spacey and Annette Benning's in the film, American Beauty. In both situations, the characters involved communicate their feelings in their actions more than in their words. Emilia wants to be recognized by Iago so she steals the cloth from Desdemona. Annette Benning realizes her vision of an ideal American family is faltering so she sleeps with her boss out of spite for her husband.

Cheap Custom Essays on Iago from Shakespeare's Othello

The Catholic Encyclopedia defines a devil as a personified spirit created in goodness by God. Devils are subordinate to God and also responsible for their eternal damnation. Iago proves his deviltry when he makes an oath with Othello that directly contradicts the Great Commandment. Iago's character draws forth many questions about devils in our society Are there any Iago's living in our world today? In my personal life? Who are they? How can I learn to avoid them so I don't end up like Othello? One thing is certain; Shakespeare has shown us that tragedy results from relationships that are not based on some common good. Friendships must be both sided, not unilateral.

Diego Velazquez was born and baptized on June 6, 15 in Seville, Spain. Seville was the most populous city of Spain, and also a very wealthy part of Spain as well. It was the center of cultural activity and was known as "the New Rome." (Art Book Velazquez, 1) His father was Joao Rodriguez Silva from Portuguese origin, and his mother was Jeronima Velazquez from Spain. (Academic American Encyclopedia, Vol. 1, 1886) Diego took the last name from his mother instead of from his father, which was very common then where they were from. He was the oldest of seven brothers. His family moved to Seville from the Portuguese town of Oporto about a decade before Diego was born. (Art Book Velazquez, 1)

During his lifetime, Velazquez had two main mentors. The first was Francisco Herrera the Elder. He was described as "a strict man without character." (Velazquez, 18) He was Velazquez's apprentice when he was about 10 years old. Although, Herrera's inflexible character drove Velazquez to turn to another mentor, Francisco Pacheco. They formed an apprenticeship in 1610. Francisco Pacheco was Seville's leading teacher of painting. The contract they had lasted from 4-6 years. (Art Book Velazquez, 1) It also provided Velazquez with plenty of food and clothing. During this time with Pacheco, Velazquez developed his own style- He preferred to draw "lively young peasants" instead of just copying from prints, as most apprentices would do. (New Standard Encyclopedia, Vol. 16, 187) Later on, Velazquez went on and married Pacheco's daughter, Juana. Together, they had two daughters.

After this, Velazquez went on two trips to Italy- One was in 16 and the other was in 164. There, he found inspiration for several religious and mythological paintings. (New Standard Encyclopedia, Vol. 16, 187) While in Rome during his second trip (164-1650), he painted his famous portrait of the Pope Innocent X. The Pope was so pleased by this that he sent Velazquez a gold chain and portrait medal. (The New Book of Knowledge, Vol. 1, 186)

Diego Velazquez was a 17th century Spanish painter and the first in rank of Western artists. He was an early realist. He had technical skill in composition and his majesty of light, shading, and coloring caused him to be called "the painter's painter." (Academic American Encyclopedia, Vol. 1, 186) He used broad, free brush strokes. In his portraits, he eliminated all unnecessary details, showing the figure in bold relief against a fainted background. (The New Book of Knowledge, Vol. 1, 186) He wanted himself to be known as a genre painter, which means "one who mirrors common life." (New Standard Encyclopedia,

Vol. 16, 187) He wanted to show life as he saw it, and he painted people in settings in which they lived. He captured the noble and special qualities of life in his paintings. (The New Book of Knowledge, Vol. 1, 186) Diego Velazquez died on August 6, 1660 from being overworked.

The overwhelming theme in "Of Mice and Men" is that each man kills the thing he loves. This idea deserves great contemplation, which is one thing that has made this novel a lasting classic. However, this is not a completely true statement. To say each man kills the thing he loves is an overly dramatic idea, entirely implausible. If, for the sake of clarification "man" includes the entire human race if would be impossible. Is man more likely to kill the thing he loves, yes; for each man to do that, no. Two of the main reasons that people kill the thing they love are because they are either protecting it from a worse fate or they are experiencing an overpowering amount of emotion.

In the novel George kills Lennie because he loves him. He is trying to protect him from a worse fate of either being hunted down or thrown into a jail where nobody would understand him. It is a difficult choice for George, but he understood it was the most humane thing he could have done. It was an easier passing for Lennie; he was calm and right with the world. This is akin to when a relative needs to remove a loved one from life support. Many people believe it is better to have the person they love be removed from the pain of living than to have to live a half life.

When an emotion becomes too much to bear it can lead a person to kill. There are many such stories coming out of the WWII Jewish Ghetto's. When the SS Officers would start searching the emptied houses mothers in hiding would often accidentally smother their children to keep them quiet. The overcoming fear of being found and killed made them perform a very rash act. How many stories has the public been feed about lover's quarrels that end in death? One person decides to leave and the other decides that if they cannot have them nobody will. There is either too much love or too much blind panic pressing in on a person that would make that decision.

Love is a difficult thing, as seen in the relationship displayed by George and Lennie. What makes the theme not entirely accurate is that George would never have killed Lennie if he did not have to. Lennie helped keep George's dream of a farm alive, without Lennie George would have been just another drifter. George killed him because he loves him, but on same wavelength if he had not been forced he would not have killed him. There are people in the world who live for one another; they would never kill the other person. If given the choice many people would give their own life over someone they loved.

In summation each man does not kill the thing he loves. Though, if we are driven to it by intense emotion or extreme circumstance we will make that ultimate sacrifice. The problem with this is each person controls their own actions, you choose everything you do. Sometimes people choose to find an alternative to killing.
