The Old Jail

On a recent trip to St. Augustine, I toured the remarkable old jail. This building was completed in 181 and I am amazed that it is still standing today. The old jail housed prisoners for over sixty years until it was turned into a historical site.

During the tour, one of the first places that I viewed was the tiny living quarters of the sheriff and his family. The sheriff only made a measly two dollars per day while he worked in the jail. I guess the free living space made up for the low salary. I would not want to live in a place that was full of criminals especially if some were in there for committing murder. Several replicas of old furniture and different antique items could be seen in the living quarters. The tour guide told a few horrifying stories of things that happened to sheriff and his family while they lived there. The next place the tour took me was to the male and female quarters.

Custom Essays on Old Jail

The male and female quarters were almost identical. Both had metal cots for beds and a toilet in each tiny cell. The tour guide shook the iron bars to make the image more real. She told the group that prisoners would shake the bars to get attention from the guards. Many stories were told about different ways that the prisoners would try to escape from the cells. Some of the stories were funny because they told of the idiotic ways some of the criminals tried to reach freedom. At the end of each row of cells was an all-metal room that was about the size of my closet, which is not very big at all. This cell was the solitary confinement room. This was one of the several forms of punishment used in the jail. Some of the other punishment methods for the prisoners were working outside, cleaning the toilets in all the cells, and maximum security. Maximum security was when a prisoner was being punished and was forced to stay in his or her cell or the solitary confinement cell with a guard outside the iron bars to watch the prisoners every move. This allowed the prisoner zero freedom. I would hate to be in jail. It reminded of an old dirty place that had not been cleaned in forever. On the walls were signs that stated the required behavior for the prisoners and the punishment that would be enforced for each rule that was broken.

The final place that I toured was the kitchen. Antique kitchen appliances could be seen throughout the room. The jail had employees that worked in the kitchen and some of the prisoners who were awarded for model behavior were also allowed to work with the employees. Screw holes could be seen in the counters where knifes and other sharp utensils were stuck to the counter with chains for the safety of the workers and other prisoners. I would not want to be one of the employees who worked in the kitchen because of how close the contact was with the prisoners.

When my tour was finished, I thought to myself of how thankful I am that I have never been in jail. I could not stand to live the way prisoners do. I know the conditions in the jails of today are different, but it is just the fact of having someone watch me twenty-four hours a day.

Oh my aching back!! Back pain is the number one problem facing the workforce in the United States. Low back pain is one of the most expensive benign conditions in America. Every year 5-10% of the population 00-150,000 people get low back pain. Risk factors are repetitive lifting, vibration, smoking, alcohol abuse, multiple pregnancies, inactivity, osteoporosis, and a familial trend. There are no quick fix or total cure for most back problems. The good news is that chronic back problems can be treated effectively to limit the impact on your every day life. Most people with low back pain do not simply injure their back suddenly. Over many years your back is subjected to repeated stress which may not result in pain at the time the injury.

The anatomy and physiology of the spine is simple yet difficult to describe. Consider a pile of childrens blocks alternated with cushions and stablilized with guy ropes. In your spine, the blocks are boney vertebrae, the cushions are soft golf-ball like sacs, and the guy wires are the muscles and ligaments of your back. Back pain is caused by vertebral injury or cushion (disc) trouble, but without muscle strength, the spine is unstable and susceptible to injury.

Signs and symptoms can be divided into two areas. The first is mechanical type pain. Mechanical type back pain results from inflammation caused by irritation or injury to the back. Mechanical type pain usually starts near the lower spine. It rarely extends below the knee. Compressive or neurogenic (meaning nerve related type pain occurs when the nerve roots that leave the spine are irritated or pinched. A common case of compressive pain is herniated disk. The nerves that leave the lower lumbar spine spin to form the sciatic nerve. One of the earliest signs of pressure on a nerve root is numbness in the area supplied by the nerve. Another compressive pain is spinal stenosis. In some people, degeneration of the spine can result in a narrowing of the spinal canal and this causes all the nerves within the spinal canal to become inflamed and fail to work properly.

There are many tests that can be done to diagnose back problems. However the very first step is going to see your doctor and based upon your signs and symptoms the doctor may order an XRAY, MRI, and or CT just to name a few. Xrays are usually done on the intial visit. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the most common test that is done because it allows for visualization of bones, nerves and disks of the spine. The CT (Computer Assisted Tomography) the next most common test is simular to the MRI but allows for improved visulization of the spine.

Treatment options include conservative versus surgical. Conservative treatment is exercise, medications, physical therapy and rest. New on the market for back pain which Jerry Lewis utilizes is the Epidural Steroid injection. Surgical treatment is laminectomy, disketomy and spinal fusion in some selected conditions. Treatment usually involves two goals. The first goal is relieve the immediate problem and number two is to reduce the risk of re-injury.

Prevention is the Key with good posture, body mechanics when lifting and exerciseing.

Phase I. Acquisition I

In this phase we were asked to first develop and weight a set of criteria including; performance, cost, compatibility, scalability, modularity, support, IPR and security. The next step of this phase was to determine whether to buy or build the DSS, given RM, stockholder and vendor information. I chose to buy from BASS versus Fischer or building in-house because of various factors, one being that it had the lowest cost, $680,000 versus $1,000,000 for Fischer and $1,60,000 for in-house. It also had the greatest year ROI and IRR of the three choices.

Acquisition II

Help with essay on System Development Lifecycle Methodology

This phase is necessary because a low security rating of the BASS system that was not taken into account allowed a computer virus to infiltrate the system. The two choices were to upgrade to the latest anti-virus software, or by the DSS from Fischer. I chose to go with buying the latest anti-virus software because it provided a greater yr. ROI, 6 versus 17 percent, as well as greatest IRR, 80 versus percent. The cost was also a factor, $78,000 for the anti-virus software versus $1,40,000 for the Fischer system. This resulted in a 15% increase in cost, and ROI decreased from 86 to 6 percent. More attention should have been paid to the security factor up front.

Phase II. Training I

In this phase, we were given 4 options/strategies to train the users on DSS at 5 different locations. The options were as follows

1.Instructor-led training, one for all offices.

.WBT on the intranet.

.Training workshop at Chicago

4.Instructor-led training, train change agent at each office.

I chose the WBT on the intranet option because it offered the best results

·End user satisfaction index of 84/100 percent

·Time Line of 0/60 days

·Effectiveness index of 80/100 percent

·Users trained was 140/150 people

Training II

Here, we had to choose between two options to augment the training, and these options were

1.Instructor-led training

.Online site training augmentation

I chose the online site training because it offered the best results

·End user satisfaction index of 8/100 percent

·Time Line of 5/60 days

·Effectiveness index of 85/100 percent

·Users trained was 14/150 people

Phase III. Implementation

In this final phase, we were given 4 implementation options

1.Phased design, starting with the New York office, cost of $500,000 and 45 days time.

.Implement in the Chicago marketing dept. as part of the testing, cost of $700,000 and 50 days time.

.Implement in all the offices at the same time, cost of $750,000 and 15 days time.

4.Implement in all the offices, but have the users use the old and new system for a month before discarding the old system, cost of $1,000,000 and time of 60 days.

As a result of our choices, the sales department was able to offer better discounts to our customers, and Finke and Barry's has regained its lost market share.

When your young you really dont think about death or anyone close to you dying. You just expect everything to always stay the same. When I was young I was never faced with death or the concept that someone important to me would leave. I have learned that many experiences in life can teach you. This experience is one of them.

When I was seven years old my great grandfather was told that he had bone cancer. Of course I didnt know what that meant I just knew that he was very sick. He lived with my great grandmother in the Sequoia Mountains so I didnt live very close to him but emotionally I felt very close. About six months later my family and I went to visit for Thanksgiving.

I walked in the front door of his house and saw him lying in his recliner. His face was pale white, and he looked so sick. Even the feeling of the room felt different. It didnt seem like the warm house that smelled of my great grandmas famous raisin bread. Instead it felt cold and smelled of vomit. This was the first time I realized how seriously sick he was.

I always thought of him as being this strong super hero type but when I saw him lying there he looked so fragile and helpless. I was even afraid to give him a hug. Later the next day my aunt arrived from Texas to visit for Thanksgiving. My mom asked me if I could go outside for a while and I asked why and she told me that she needed to give my grandfather a bath. As soon as I walked out the door tears dripped down my cold face. He really was helpless. I walked for at least an hour just thinking. As I walked I found this perfect pinecone and decided to bring it home. I remember handing him the pinecone and saying, since you cant go hiking anymore, I thought that I would bring the outdoors to you.

That week I spent all my time with him. Sometimes I would read to him and sometimes he would read to me. We would watch old Elvis movies on TV all day because there was an Elvis marathon on. That week it seemed like we did everything together.

On Thanksgiving I was so happy that I could be with my grandfather. Normally he would carve the turkey but this year he seemed much to weak to even stand on his own. As my grandma started cutting the turkey he stood up on his crutches and walked over to the counter and carved the turkey. This symbolized so much. Even though he looked so weak physically, emotionally he was the strongest person I knew. The next morning I had to go home. Saying goodbye was so hard because on the outside I acted like this wasnt going to be the last time that I saw him, but on the inside I knew it would be.

Two days later he died. At his funeral I cried of course but it didnt seem as hard because I had said goodbye. I miss him dearly and it is hard but through this all I feel as though I have become a much stronger person. I have gained strength, courage, wisdom, and maturity. My great grandfather has taught me so much and I will never forget the time we have spent together. I know that I will see him again someday and everything will seem the same.

The recent idea of cloning has stirred up a lot of debates and conflicts between different people. These debates arise because there are advantages and disadvantages to the idea of cloning. What I will do is look at some of these "pros" and "cons" of cloning.

The first group of advantages is medical - first I will look at the fact that by copying an individual it can provide a donor of bone marrow for transplants. The clone could be made up with the proper makeup necessary in order to have a successful transplant. This would be an advantage because having 'natural' children can't guarantee a match. Another pro of cloning is that it can be done for infertile couples, or in situations where one parent has a genetic disease that can be passed on. Also the knowledge of cloning can lead to further development of new medicines for humans/ animals. Finally, by cloning we can eliminate certain defects/diseases, for example like diabetes.

Along with medical advantages there are emotional advantages to parents who have lost a child and now can clone a new one.

Another pro would be economic - both to the people it provides jobs to and also that scientists would be able to use cloning for a mass production of animals like cows for example to produce more products like beef, cheese and milk. So they wouldn't have to use as much natural animals. The final pro would have to be that we could prevent the extinctions of certain animals.

Order custom research paper on Pros + Cons of Cloning

While there are quite a bit of advantages to cloning there is an immense number of disadvantages. First we have to look at the fact that it took 77 attempts to clone Dolly the sheep, so this shows us that we are not yet ready.

There are ethical and moral problems such as we are violating animals and humans by making them specimens. People see this as inhumane, and this is what cloning relies on. The question seems to be whether or not we should be playing G-d and tampering with nature.

Cloning is a very expensive process; there will be a lot of bribing going on, for example the rich will bribe scientists to make the 'perfect' child. People might turn against each other and it will be bad for the society. This would be the case because it might lead for there to be a 'superior' race.

The main con is that there are two copies that would exist. The difference is that one would be natural and the other wouldn't be the real thing. It wouldn't be your very own that was naturally created the way it was meant to be - unique.

A major con would also be the question that is what would happen to the clones that 'go wrong'? Do they simply destroy them, are they not alive?

The final con is that if we can advance to such things as cloning, the world has more advancement. This advancement, I think, is very bad for us. While new technologies help us in many ways, it also slowly makes things worse for us in the future.

I can sum up this assignment by saying that with every advancement, where there are advantages, you will always find the negative side.

Please note that this sample paper on Pros + Cons of Cloning is for your review only. When terrorists attacked the world trade center, it changed Americans into vengeful people. People wanting nothing more then revenge for terrorists horrible hate crimes. And this was an event that won't be quickly forgotten because it is something that changed peoples though and ideas about others different from them. And this related to the novel, "Night" in that Elizer's life changed greatly after his experience in that he's lived a life of many lifetimes, in that he's seen things that people's mind were not meant to see. And some of these events drove individuals insane in that their minds could comprehend what was going on. Elizer has also lost all innocence through his experiences, in that as soon as he arrived at the death camp he had to immediately stop acting like a helpless child and more like a strong individual. But how did Elizer change and was it a good or a bad change.

Elizer grew up in a community where religion was a very important part of life, and he based his entire life on learning the ways of the lord and following the ways of the lord. But through his experience in the concentration camps, Elizer lost believe that God even and existed. His believes were lost in that his mind couldn't comprehend the horror of it all. And maybe it was that Elizer didn't want to believe that this was actually happening and tried to blame God for his pain and agony, and just lost believe in every thing. And this is apparent in even today, in that people blame higher powers in hope to escape their pain and agony that is tormenting them.

Elizer also changed in that he grew more compassionate with his father, and more loving towards him. This is apparent in that they stuck together throughout the entire ordeal, and they always lent each other a helping hand. And this relationship was most likely what helped them through this horrible ordeal, in that all they had was each other. But they weren't always as close, in that Elizers father, before this, was more concerned with the community's needs instead of his family's needs. Elizer barely saw his father and didn't really have the greatest relationship with his father. And it's sad that it took a horrible situation like this to bring a father and son together. But its true that horrible situations make people realize actually how much they love someone, and how scared people are of dying and facing the pain of losing someone.

Elizer not only changed in this situation, but he also matured. In this I mean that the images he saw, and the struggle to stay alive made Elizer seem like he had lived many life times. But was still living in a child's body. And to always be fighting for your life is a stress that is incomprehensible to any person with a normal life.

Write my Essay on NIGHT for me

So all in all Elizer's life changed incredibly, and he experienced something that will not be forgotten. He lived through hell and told about it. And did it change his life for the good or the bad? The answer would have to be it changed his life for the worst in that he lost believe, and so many other things, but it can be said that this event made Elizer a strong individual and hopefully his story will never be forgotten.

Ged, the main character and hero in A Wizard of Earthsea, is a diverse and constantly changing man. He is also known as Duny and Sparrowhawk is a wizard on the fantasy world of Earthsea. He was born on the island of Gont and has the potential to be the most powerful wizard ever. His best friend is Estarriol, or Vetch who lives in the town of Ismay on the island of Iffish. Ged was schooled by Ogion, a wizard of Gont, and on Roke Island at Roke School.

In the first section of the book Ged is a mid-teen. He is very full of pride and is a bit power-hungry, impatient, and determined. A witch teaches him miniscule, not very complicated spells in his village, Ten Alders and when he over-exerts his power trying to save his village from attack Ogion who he follows to learn to be a wizard cures him. But Ogion does not teach him spells, so he shows that he is power-hungry and impatient and goes to Roke to become a mage. At Roke he meets Jasper, his rival, and his pride intervenes and he becomes determined to be better than Jasper and beat him. Overall, in the first section Ged seems to be a normal person.

In the second section of A Wizard of Earthsea Ged changes a little bit. He still has a monstrous amount of pride and is still very determined, but he loses his power-hunger for an eagerness to be out of any kind of spotlight and he trades his impatience for maturity, and also begins to trust his instincts. After a lot of determined work by Ged he confronts Jasper and they show their power. Ged makes the biggest mistake in his life and raises the dead because of his pride again. With the raised dead came a shadow and the shadow almost kills him he is left scarred and very changed. No longer power-hungry after he graduated he goes to a small village called Low Torning to work instead a castle or palace where he would be much more prized. He fights a dragon there and trusts his instincts that he knew the dragon's true name (so he could have power over it) when if he were wrong he would probably lose his life and many others. All in all, Ged changes a lot in the second section.

In the final section Ged is much wiser, solemn and then happy, and determined, but his most of his pride has been lost. After a couple of shadow-encounters, a grueling hawk flight, and a near death experience on the waves Ged's pride seemed to slip away as he learns that it has caused him all these close-calls. Ged is still very determined as he has been all throughout the book. He knows that he can't keep avoiding the shadow all his life and he must confront the shadow once and for all. He is now much more solemn, he is like a man who knows his destiny or someone who has to do the seemingly impossible (that is what he is) and then after he beats his shadow he is very happy for the first time in a while. He now knows much more about the world and much wiser in the ways of light and dark.

In conclusion Ged of Gont is a constantly changing, diverse character. Even though I didn't really love A Wizard of Earthsea I think Ged is one of the most developed complex characters I've ever read about in a book.
