What is language? Dictionaries will tell you that it serves as a shared oral or written system of communication, but it has far greater significance than that simple description provides. Then again, Webster's has never dealt much in symbolism or metaphor. Language, in both structure and usage, speaks volumes (pun intended) about the people who speak it and the place it inhabits, both technically and culturally. Every modern tongue, and most ancient ones, descends form a long and complicated tree of linguistics that dates back to the first strung-together grunt man ever uttered. As the species spread over the continents and millions of years passed, the then-isolated groups twisted their original speech and turned it into statements of cultural identity. Nowhere in the modern world is this more prominent than in the form of modern English especially the American version. Our unique blend of ancestry and verbal irreverence has produced the most scattershot (and yet fastest-growing) language in the world. The ever-growing "global tongue" exemplifies the nature of the nation that spawned it, even though it also carries a few problems along the way.

The United States, of course, originally inherited its language and manner of speaking from the mother country of Great Britain. The language wasn't beautiful even then a Germanic base, coupled with successive invasions by the Latin-speaking Romans and the French-speaking Normans (who compared the native speech of their subjects to the baying of dogs), led to a disjointed and disorganized jumble of mixed roots and odd pronunciations. Because of a need for labor and settlers, the new nation normally allowed unrestricted immigration. This led to massive waves of Irish, Germans, Eastern Europeans, Chinese, and Hispanics, each bringing with them a new set of word families. In time, their speech intermingled with that of the original, forming a unique hybrid even farther from normal language rules than the first. The "melting pot" of the United States was fully reflected by the dialect of those within an all-absorbing hodgepodge of new and unusual vernacular. Nowhere else in the world can one hear such diverse words as kindergarten (German), abattoir (French), ski (Norse), tree (Old English), and shmuck (Russian Yiddish), and know what they all mean without a double fluency.

Unfortunately, this mixed nature sometimes causes problems with unclear ancestry and articulation. People often err in the use of a word merely because they have no idea which root to associate it with. For instance, the word forte. The most common definition derives from Middle English, means "specialty" or "strong point", and is pronounced "fort". A word with the exact same spelling comes from the Latin fortis, instructs a musician to play a particular note loudly, and is pronounced "fort-ay". The latter pronunciation has become commonplace, and threatens to encompass the first because of popular usage. While "fort-ay" is listed in the dictionary as the second preference, a reason exists why it's second because it's not first! Related words such as fortress (oddly enough, from both roots) compound the problem because of murky heritage. Because of so many different contributors to the language, similar-sounding words may have nothing in common. Coincidentally, the non-related word forty, a purely numerical term, claims lineage from no less than half a dozen ancestors, as far apart as Gothic, Norse, Frisian, and Semitic. Only in America.

Coping With Love and Theft

The remnants of plastic lay scrappily on the floor. The windows are drawn, and I lay on my bed. Bob Dylans newest album (his 4rd,) Love and Theft, had done what no person, place or thing (the entire day) had been able to do. It has comforted my troubled mind as well as let me reflect on the matters at hand.

From the moment I woke up before school, the day was different. I had been waiting several months for this date, because Dylans new album was to be released. However, it was not easy, as I had a hard time sitting through my classes (more than usual,) and I longed for the day to be over. Although school seemed like an eternity, dismissal finally came and I left the school.

As I walked down Broad Street, in Red Bank, towards Jacks Music Shoppe, several things struck me. Although it was a beautiful summer day, there was a hint of melancholy in every face that I passed. Some stores were closed, and those that were open seemed vacant. As I was stopped at a street corner, waiting for an opening in the flow of traffic so that I could cross, a woman standing next to me broke into tears. A man standing next to the lady hugged her, and he too began to sob.

Write your Coping with Love and Theft research paper

I enter the store, and am now totally debating within myself as to whether or not it is a good time to purchase the album. The fact that I have already made the trip to the shop leaves me with the impression that I might as well just pick it up while Im there (a far cry from the person who had been waiting months for it to come out.) I walk over to the Love and Theft stand, and I grab a copy, which is one of about five left in the store. I pay, and I am on my way.

I get home, and play the album.

In 17, Time Out of Mind put Dylan back onto the Rock and Roll map when it won a Grammy for its head-on deep and soulful reflection on slowing down in old age, as well as death. Four years later, Dylan is not as direct but hits the same points as he veers through songs of jazz, ragtime, country, rockabilly, minstrel, cocktail lounge, as well as deep blues that allow him to not only to laugh and reflect on his life, but to show that hes thought way too deeply of the past to be either frightened or overwhelmed by anybodys future, especially his own.

You cannot have power over everything in the future, although we sometimes think that we must. Sometimes, we fear the future. This is only a result of the fact that it is natural for us to be scared of what we dont know, and seeing as how no one truly knows the future, some things are bound to frighten us. When things happen beyond our control, especially tragedies, they remind us that we, as humans, are only mortal.

However, Dylan does not dictate others thoughts in this album, but rather, allows one to come to each one on his or her own terms. This is why Love and Theft is so crucial, especially on a day like this. I close my eyes, pray for those who have been devastated, and realize that though tremendously difficult, life will soon go on (just as it always does.)

I also pray that soon this day of infamy, when looked back upon, will allow me to face the future with steadfastness and resiliency. Until then, however, all I can do is turn the TV news off, and play the album once again, as this is where I will get all the guidance I need.

The day, is the 11th of September, Two-Thousand and One.

The Impossible is Possible

One beautiful sunny day in May my stepmother called my cell phone and told me that I needed to come to my grandmother's house for something had happened. So immediately, I turned my Toyota truck around and headed for her house in Rainsville. When I arrived, my sister's car was there, which was very unusual. When I walked into the old wooden house, I discovered everyone was weeping. That is when my sis said, "Papa has had a stroke and he is in Wisconsin with Dad." My dad and papa worked for the country music band Alabama so they were in Wisconsin on tour. All to soon, I realized that my grandfather's hopes and dreams of driving a bus and working had been ripped from him.

Immediately, I started asking questions to find out how bad he was, where he was at, and when we could go see him. My grandmother replied, "We are waiting on a phone call from your dad to see how bad the stroke was and if we need to fly up there to see him or just wait." We anxiously waited for about an hour. When the phone rang, he said, "He don't have forty-eight hours to live." Our world just came crashing down. Then my family planned to fly to Wisconsin and spend our last day with our grandfather, but Randy Owens being the compassionate person he is, was soon on the phone with UAB hospital. He told Dad, "You tell Papa Rucks that if he can hang on until morning; we will have a jet with three doctors and ten nurses there by 6 a.m."

At 11 a.m., Papa arrived at UAB with all of us waiting for him. We were not able to see him until seven o'clock that night because of the extensive tests they had to run, to assess his condition. The burden of only getting to see him for an hour each day began to strain my family. For the next thirteen days, we waited in agony for any sign of improvement, which did not come. On the fourteenth day, we were all talking to him like normal and he finally said, "Hey what are all of you doing here?" My family just stood there in shock. My Dad said, "Hey dad are you ok?" He did not answer but I knew from that day on he would be okay.

Custom writing service can write essays on the impossible is possible

Over the next several weeks, he began to talk and make small improvements. Even though we saw, progress Dr.Allen forecast a grim recovery and devastated my family again. He said, "He would never walk, feed himself, or talk plain again." The family discussed it and as long as Papa was alive, we would be thankful. From that day on the hell of rehab started and he gradually improved everyday. He began taking few steps every day. Soon he began trying to feed him self and saying three or four words in our conversations, which was an improvement that kept us all hoping he would someday completely recover. The dream we had for him did come true and he eventually learned how to walk and feed him self again. Even though he is a bit more outspoken, he talks as plain as he ever has. He also drives his truck, plows his garden, and cooks supper for all the kids on Thursday.

Do not ever take what you have for granted because it can all be snatched away. I have learned to appreciate what life gives you and not wish for more because it can be taken away. It does not matter what the doctors say the impossible is possible.

Character Analysis of Jude Fawley

Thomas Hardy's character Jude Fawley, in Jude The Obscure, is without direction in life. Jude follows certain dreams, but once circumstances turn for the worse, he abandons his aspirations. His system of beliefs works in a similar manner. Once his emotions contradict his beliefs, he drops his ideologies to suit his situation. It is this lack of bearing that leaves him devastated so many times in his life. Three main character traits usurp Jude's possible success. Jude is detached, unassuming, and unrealistic, which allows circumstances to determine his actions thus leaving him desolate. One reason Jude allows circumstances to govern his life is that he is detached. Jude

moves from town to town searching for a profession and an unobtrusive life. Attempting to evade bad circumstances, Jude withdraws from one place to another throughout his entire existence. In Part Fifth, chapter 8, Jude says, "Well, perhaps it is for the best that we have almost decided to move on." He concludes this after he finds his scheming ex-wife lives nearby. Jude uses this

same technique throughout the novel whenever rough times occur. He also is alienated from society because he allow Sue's emotions regarding marriage to prevent the licensure. Jude does not stand up and declare his belief they should be wed. He allows Sue's timidity regarding the commitment and is therefore ostracized by the community. Jude is detached mentally as well as

physically. All through his life he makes no significant connection with anyone. Despite his efforts, no woman, not even his wife, returns his affection as whole-heartedly as he offers his. This opinion is noticeable enough that even a casual observer in Part Fifth, chapter 5, comments,

"I am inclined to think that she don't care for him quite so much as he does for her." Another reason Jude allows circumstances to govern his life is that he is unassuming. Jude works throughout life as an unassuming stonecutter struggling to live comfortably; however, the very nature of his occupation requires he yield to circumstances because of its relative demand. This ensures his lack of success simply because of the dwindling popularity for

gothic stonework. His profession, in itself, is unassuming. He does not follow through with an occupation which makes a difference. He instead opts for the lowly vocation of stonecutter. Jude left no legacy because he follows the easiest path circumstance permits, which is the apprenticeship of gothic stonework repair. It is evident it is a dwindling art, but Jude persists in

spite of its obvious drawbacks. Jude is unassuming in yet another matter. His life, as a whole, is modest and amounts to nothing because he decides to let his dreams die. He impetuously follows the path of least resistance to whatever catches his attention. After he leaves Arabella, he decides to pursue academics once more, but he soon loses focus as Sue becomes his new love

interest. A final reason Jude allows circumstances to govern his life is that he is unrealistic. Jude is not well-equipped to become a success. Though he is intelligent he does not have the financial means to attend a college. This obstacle is too impossible to overcome at this point in history. Another reason Jude is unrealistic is he expects his union with Sue to be without its problems. He does not anticipate the question of marriage would be such a problem. They bicker about it and the obligations surrounding

The definition of poem is a verbal composition designed to convey experiences, ideas, or emotions in a vivid and imaginative way, characterized by the use of language chose for its sound and suggestive power and by the used of literary techniques such as matter, metaphor and rhyme; another definition is a creation, object, or experience having beauty suggestive of poetry. Based on these definitions of poem Hemingway was entirely correct when he said that The Red Badge of Courage is "all as much as one piece as a great poem is."

The way Crane created this experience and depicted the psychological conflict of war through Henry was remarkable. He wonderfully expresses the confused life of Henry with the chaos on the battlefield. This composition encompasses a poetic grace, which illustrates Henry's time in war. The basis of this masterpiece pertains to his experiences, how he interoperates them, his emotions and the crazy ideas that fill his head during this time of "war, the red animal, war, and the blood-swollen god."

Crane uses incredible poetic techniques combined with fascinating language when describing Henry's impressions of his surroundings, war and his feelings. Crane is able to create intriguing images through his language. Symbols and imagery are the way Henry's impressions are portrayed. The book is dominated by descriptions through color to express the attitude toward the subject of the novel- war.

A great example of this is when he encounters the dead man "where the high arching boughs made a chapel." "The corpse was dressed in a uniform that once had been blue, but was now faded to a melancholy shade of green. The eyes, staring at the youth, had changed to the dull hue to be seen on the side of a dead fish. The mouth was open. Its red had changed to an appalling yellow. Over the gray skin of the face ran little ants…He was pursued by a sight of the black ants swarming greedily upon the gray face and venturing horribly near to the eyes." The way he intensely describes this dead mans appearance emphasizes how his observations are most of the time colored by his overwhelming emotions.

Buy cheap The Red Badge of Courage: A Great poem term paper

Crane allows you to understand the psychological effects thorough the images. To hen the campfires of the enemy across the river look like "red eyes" of a "row of dragons." He is undoubtedly fearful towards enemy, and towards war itself. "They were going to look at war, the red animal, war, the blood swollen god." The abundant visual imagery is a main aspect to Cranes highly poetic style.

Another simple but rather poetic aspect of the novel is the way that Crane bases his names for the characters on his impressions of them. He does not call them by name, but by his idea of them, the loud solider, the youth, and the tall solider.

The unique ways in which Crane embodied Henry's experience was particularly poetic. He did indeed convey Henry's experiences, ideas, and emotions throughout his time in war in a vivid and imaginative way. Characterized by the use of language with suggestive power and by the used of literary techniques this literary work is creation of Henry's experience having beauty suggestive of poetry.

Recent studies show that more and more families are finding it difficult to stay together than they did in the past. Family experts have been looking at the way people lived in the past and how they are living now. This article will be showing the major differences of family from the past and present.

Families in the past used to spend a lot of time together the role of the father was to work and provide for the family. The mother stayed at home and looked after the children and done the housework. If they wanted to some women could work part time. Jobs were secure so you could provide for the family without worrying about losing your job. This gives the father less stress and more enjoyable times with thee family. People had jobs near their homes and used public transport to travel to work because of work near by people got home quickly and had time to visit relatives in the evenings. People rarely used to work in the weekends, which gave them time to do something with the family. Pay salaries where low and things where very expensive with very little pay this meant that families had to pull together and stand by each other which made them closer. More people had faith and used to visit church often to pray for their families. Because more people believed in faith divorce was rare, it would have been a sin. People also did not remarry so their where no nuclear family members which could have created conflict. Communities worked together so they could get know each other. Unfortunately in those days Gays and lesbians where known as out casts for being different.

Now days there are more abortions, women are working longer hours, divorce is more regular, the role of the father is to wok as well as looking after the children, many families are now visit different places of worship, jobs aren't secure as they used to be, communities don't share the same value, more people remarry with children from the other partner and salary's are higher so we could do things with their money.

Cheap University Papers on Familys in danger of callopse

The family experts have said that the following reasons below put pressure on families to work today. Lack of commitment between all the family members is putting pressure on families to work today this is because more and more people would rather spend time with friends rather than family. Religion and faith also put pressure on a family because family members might want to convert to another religion because they don't believe what their religion says about families and how they spend time together when they don't. Adults are more ambitious about their careers and find it hard to say no to work. This means that some parents aren't spending quality time with their kids during their young childhood. Supporting the family financially buying children clothes, toys, books etc can be put a lot of pressure on a family to work. With busy lifestyles people find it difficult to visit extended families like cousins. Not having a good surrounding and home life with teachings and discipline from parents can put pressure on the family because the children might not get along with their parents. Also people expectations are much higher on family life.
