The differences in the United Kingdom national identity between the decade in which Winston Churchill died and that of when Princes Diana died

The main points that have brought a change to the national identity of Britain between the deaths of one of our most beloved prime ministers Winston Churchill and our beloved Princess of Wales Diana, are things such as internal conflicts, which is related to another point, this point is the change of social acceptance in Britain. The period between the death of Winston Churchill on the 4th of January in 165 and the death of princess Diana on the 1st of august 17 provided Britain with a -year gap for the United Kingdom's national identity to change.

During the Winston Churchill, the country and the funeral itself where a very formal state of affairs. During this time the country still had the common wealth, this also brought about the idea of the traditional British person, who seemed to be stereotyped as male, white and middle class. During the Winston Churchill funeral all the protocol was followed precisely and there was very little female involvement. There seemed to be a feeling of unity, as shown by the Dockers who all moved their cranes to salute Winston Churchill's body as it passed by, this goes to show that everyone appeared to be united and where happy with their roles in society even though they where different from the hero's that they idolised. Even during the Procession there seemed to be a very formal element about it as it was covered with a lot of military assistance and the crowd where very quiet, this was very different years later during princess Diana's funeral.

During Diana's funeral, things where quite different indeed, even though the there where elements of tradition and protocol, such as the gun carriage which Diana's coffin was carried on, there where a lot of social and political changes, which would have been disrespectful during Winston Churchill's day. Occurrences such as public displays of affection by throwing flowers at the coffin of Diana. Also the military presence was diminished, which gave it the aspect of being less formal and more liberal, this can be reflected in the crowd and in the fact that it was more celebrity involved such as Elton John performing, and during Diana's funeral, both male and female family where involved which lessened the segregation as appose to the times of Winston Churchill. The idea of national identity also changed over the time as it was no longer a white male stereotype, but it was and is a multiracial concept, consisting of both genders and cultures previously not thought to be British. I believe this is due to the change of social acceptance brought about by internal conflict.

Even though there where differences, I also believe that there where a few similarities, such as media coverage, and the sense of tradition and protocol was still there. These two events also brought the country together in mourning as we could see crowds of thousands.

I believe that the idea of national identity has changed over the years because of social changes in the country brought about by social change, internal conflict and immigration which brought about a more liberal view during Princess Diana's funeral.

Heart to Heart

With technological advances every day, the human heart and the artificial heart are beginning to bridge the gap between the artificial and the natural. These two objects are becoming very similar, yet the human heart still has many advantages over the artificial heart. The human heart still ranks superior over the artificial heart because of its structure, design, and the fact that it can be medically treated and become stronger.

Primary, the human heart differs from the artificial heart because of their unique operating characteristics. The human heart runs off of energy produced by the body, in the form of sugar. The human heart also grows with the body as the person matures, and can adjust to different situations it encounters like exercise and stress. The artificial heart operates differently than the human heart. An air compressor located outside the body must power the mechanical device. It does not change in size nor adjust to the different demands that it may encounter during normal activities and stresses of the human body.

Order Custom Essay on Heart to Heart

Another aspect in which the human heart differs from the artificial heart is their different physical characteristics. The human heart has several distinguishable traits. The human heart is proportional to a person's body, weighing approximately 00 grams in an adult. The human heart is a muscular, cone-shaped organ about the size of a clenched fist. The human heart makes a sound that resembles a thumping sound and pumps at 70 beats a minute. Lastly, it is very strong and resilient, and is unlikely to stop until you die. The artificial heart has many different traits than the human heart. First, it is a dull colored, lifeless machine. It is made of molded polyurethane plastic and is hollow with valves and chambers to resemble the human heart. The artificial heart does not sound like the human heart. It only makes a slow, whirling sound. The mechanical device may become defective, and the human body can reject the foreign materials. The complications of replacing a defective or rejected device are life threatening to the human body.

The last reason why the human heart is better than the artificial heart is because of the medical treatments and exercise that affect both hearts. The human heart can receive surgery and medication that will help make it work longer and more efficiently. The body also accepts the human heart which helps run every organ of the body. The human heart is able to get stronger by doing exercises, maintaining a healthy diet, and living a wholesome lifestyle. Ultimately, the heart can become healthier and stronger. The quality of life with a human heart is greatly enhanced with choices and freedoms to lead a productive, satisfying life. The artificial heart is different because it is immune to medical treatments. This means that if the artificial heart is defected, it cannot be treated to help the person live. The body also can reject the artificial heart. With an artificial heart, your life in consumed with constant medical supervision. Your lifestyle and choices are restricted by the limitation of an artificial heart. The artificial heart cannot get stronger by doing exercises because it is made of plastic, and the plastic will stay the same as long as the person lives.

In conclusion, the similarities of the human heart and the artificial heart are progressing towards each other every day, yet the human heart still has many advantages over the artificial heart. The human heart is a near perfect machine only hindered by the harmful choices of humans. The human heart has been near perfection since the beginning of man, and an artificial heart will never surpass it.

One of the major themes throughout the play is madness. There are many parts in the play when Hamlet appears to be mad. In the first act Hamlet seems to be in a perfectly rational state of mind throughout all five scenes. The audience begins to see a change in Hamlet's character in the second scene. One of the major hints that Hamlet was mad. This was shown by his erratic and violent behavior in many major parts of the play. His bizarre tone is especially evident in his chat with Ophelia. Hamlet states, "I could accuse me of such things that it were better my mother had not borne me I am very proud, revengeful, ambitious, with more offenses at my beck than I have thoughts to put them in, imagination to give them shape, or time to act them in. What should such fellows as I do crawling between heaven and earth! We are arrant knaves, all; believe none of us." (Act III, sc. i, line1) The one minute Hamlet tells Ophelia that "I did love you once." Then in his next line he says "I loved you not." (Act III, sc. i, line 15) His quick change in moods suggests that he had gone mad. Hamlet seems to have gone insane throughout scene three. The rage Hamlet expresses towards his mother in scene three demonstrates his madness, he also kills Polonius in an act of madness, and also when Hamlet senior's ghost appears to him. This is the point in the play when Hamlet seems the most mad. In all of the other instances, everyone was able to see the ghost; but in this scene the ghost can only be seen by Hamlet. When Hamlet starts speaking to the ghost even his mother thinks that he is mad "This is the very coinage of your brain. This bodiless creation ecstasy is very cunning in."(Act III, sc. iv, line 40-45) When the queen reports this deed to Claudius, she sates the he was, "Mad as the sea and wind." (Act IV, sc. i, line 10-0)

Furthermore, when Hamlet goes before Claudius to admit to the murder of Polonius, he refuses to tell where the body is, and seems to make a joke out of the whole situation. This shows that he thinks murder is a funny occurrence and shows that he may be mad because murder is funny to him. Even when telling Claudius where the body was, he seemed to take the whole incident as a joke. "You shall nose him as you go up the stairs into the lobby." "He will stay till you come." Hamlets madness is not only apparent through his actions and words, but sometimes we view his madness in his thoughts. We see this madness in his thoughts when he does the speech, "To be or not to be" He is thinking about killing himself. Another action that proves Hamlet is mad is when Gertrude states, mad as the sea and wind when both contend,(Act III, sc. ii, line 60-67 ) Hamlet is visited by his fathers ghost and finds out about an awful murder. The ghost reveals many dark secrets of foul play. He clearly acknowledges that, The serpent that did sting thy fathers life, now wears his crown.(Act I, sc. v, line 85). The truth of his murder is uncovered. Hamlet, being in the state that he is, has only his madness to help him meet his revenge. He has had a lot of misfortunes happening that would drive anyone a little crazy. When Hamlet sees the Ghost with the Queen, the queen cant see the ghost, not like in act one, where the Ghost could be seen by everyone. The ghost wore armor in act one but the Ghost in scene four wears his normal clothes. The Ghost in Act One disappears into thin air and the ghost in scene four uses the door. The Ghost in act three, scene four is more than a little different and might well be an hallucination and further show that Hamlet is mad. These are many examples of why Hamlet throughout the play was actually mad. This shows Hamlet could actually be insane and may have gone mad because of many different tragedies in his life.

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass

Custom writing service can write essays on Frederick Douglass

An American Slave

I just finished reading the book titled Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass An

American Slave. I feel that this book was very well written. Frederick Douglass did an excellent

job of giving a accounts of what is what like to be a slave in America. He was able to make it

feel like you were a slave along side of him with the outstanding amount of specific detail that he

gave throughout the book. Before reading this book I knew about slavery and knew that the

slaves were not treated well, but at the conclusion of my reading I had a much better

understanding of the wretchedness of their conditions and the severity of the beatings that the

slaves were given for the smallest mistakes and for standing up for their rights as a human being.

The author of my book was obviously Frederick Douglass himself. He was an African

American that was born into slavery in the United States. Douglass' born name was Frederick

Augustus Washington Bailey, but throughout his life span and his escape to freedom, his name

was changed numerous times. He was a more fortunate slave and was able to learn to read and

write and was also fortunate enough to be able to escape to the north after few failed attempts.

He lived the first twenty or so years of his life being a slave and being traded from plantation to

plantation. When he escaped, he was able to get away to New Bedford where he was able to live

freely with his wife.

Frederick Douglass didn't have a set thesis in this book, but from my observation in

saying that a good thesis would be that, slavery was the most horrific way of living a lifetime,

and that living a life of slavery one was most unlucky compared to any free man. In my saying

that this would be a good guess at a thesis for this book, Douglass did an excellent job of

supporting the thesis. The point of view that Douglass gives is far from skeptical. He was

thrown into the world of slavery as a young boy and the accounts that he spoke of throughout the

book tell me that his point of view would be an unquestioning one. Everything that he wrote in

this book, I would assume to be true because they were accounts of things that happened in his

lifetime as a slave. He was writing this book to be an informative to the reader, not to try and

make people see the situation of slavery any worse than it was in reality, and this is why I say that

his point of view is unquestionable.

In this book Douglass spoke of numerous difficulties of living a life of slavery. He said

that, "It is a common custom...to part children from their mothers at a very early age...frequently

before the child has reached its twelfth month." Douglass also informed myself, as a reader, that

a master of his, Mr. Covey, once gave him a very hard blow to the head with a hickory stick, and

that without the blood matting his hair to his head he would have died. Frederick Douglass also

gave the accounts of once seeing a slave getting shot for crossing the boundaries in a creek bead

while fishing for oysters. "An old man belonging to Colonel Lloyd,...happened to get beyond the

limits of Colonel Lloyd's, and on the premises of Mr. Beal Bondly. At this trespass, Mr. Bondly

took offence, and with his musket came down to the shore, and blew its deadly contents into the

poor old man. His mangled body sank out of sight, and blood and brains marked the water where

he had stood. There are many other intense descriptions of events that Douglass had to witness

in his lifetime throughout the reading in this book.

In general, I believe that death is something none of us want. In fact, it is something we don't even like to talk about. When death takes place naturally, it is a process beyond our control to stop, but when death is willfully and deliberately brought about, it is very unfortunate.

Mark Costanzo believes that lethal injection is probably the most in-humane way of killing prisoners. Costanzo states that he is opposed to the death penalty in all of it's forms, no matter how awful the crime or how savage the criminal. The death penalty to me gives us as a society absolutely no answer. We kill the person, never allowing them the chance to speak to someone on why they did what they did which leaves us all in question.

Costanzo contends that it is time for this country to reconsider the costs and consequences of the death penalty. He also considers whether the death penalty is cheaper than life imprisonment, is fairly applied, or is a deterrent to potential murderers.

Mark Costanzo states that a man lying face up on a hospital gurney is subjected to what looks like a routine medical procedure. The only difference is that the goal is to kill instead of heal… Even more important from the perspective of politicians and proponents of the death penalty Costanzo believes that lethal injection is the method least likely to arouse doubts or revulsion in the monds of the public. Mark Costanzo also believes that the new technology will anesthetize the public conscience along with the condemned man. In most states with the death penalty, the only alternative punishment under current law is life imprisonment without the possibility of parole (LWOP). Roughly half the American public prefers life without parole, while half prefers the death penalty. But there is another alternative to capital punishment, one that garners the support of a clear majority of Americans life without the possibility of parole plus restitution, which includes a requirement that all or part of what the convicted murderer earns from prison labor goes into a victims' support fund or is paid to the murder victim's survivors. In every state where life without parole plus restitution is offered as an alternative to the death penalty, a majority of the American people say they would prefer that rather than the death penalty. I would strongly agree with Mark Costanzo on this issue. I believe that this method is more human and humanistic than the death penalty.

Write your Capital Punishment research paper

One of my arguments against the death penalty is because I believe that the sentence of capital punishment is an expensive barbaric alternative for punishing our criminals. Murder is unaccepted by our society, but yet people seem to pacify themselves by killing criminals. When you sentence a criminal to death it does not solve the questions and problems that are left behind. Mourning families will still carry a never ending heartache, and the criminal no longer has to pay for the consequences of their actions. The only people left to pay are the tax payers. This is why I agree very strongly with Mark Costanzo.

Overall, my views are very similar to Mark Costanzo's. He states that capital punishment is unfair, barbaric, and unjustified retribution. Costanzo also believes that capital punishment is cruel and unusual, which is true to me. It's cruel because it is a relic of the earliest days of penology when slavery was a commonplace. But it is the 1st century and there is no slavery, and there should be no capital punishment. Like slavery, executions have no place in a civilized society who respects life. To me a society who respects life does not deliberately kill human beings.

Please note that this sample paper on Capital Punishment is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. The Call Of The Bush

The poem I have chosen is titled "The Call of The Bush" that is written by Dora Wilcox. The subject/ story of this poem is about the poet/writer being in the outback without anything but the horizon in front of her. The main emotions expressed in this poem are happiness, relaxation and peace. The poet has used the following poetic devises to create a clear picture in the mind of the reader. These help to convey the message and include lines one and two rhyme, lines three and four rhyme and descriptive language in the verses. Aspects of the Australian National Identity that are addressed in this poem include she-oak, gum trees and bush. I believe that this is an accurate representation of our national identity because it tells the reader a lot about the out back and how peaceful calm the outback can be if you just sit back and take notice. The view being expressed by the writer is very positive because she talks a lot about how wonderful the outback is and how she prefers it to the city.

There's Only The Two Of Us Here

The poem I have chosen is titled "There's Only The Two Of Us Here" that is written by Edward Harrington. The subject/ story of this poem is about the poet camping one night on the side of a lonely hill in a empty hut. The main emotions expressed in this poem are coldness, loneliness and sacredness. The poet has used the following poetic devises to create a clear picture in the mind of the reader. These help to convey the message and include The last word of the first and second line rhyme (this continues throughout the poem), descriptive verses, many emotions being felt and similes. Aspects of the Australian National Identity that are addressed in this poem include boiled me billy, huts, and old slab shed. I believe that this is an accurate yet non-accurate representation of our national identity because many years ago this is how most Australians lived, but not many people live like that now. The view being expressed by the writer is a bit of both because at some stages in the poem the writer is being very positive, and at other times he is being negative.

Give Me A Home Among The Gumtrees

The song I have chosen is "Give Me A Home Among The Gumtrees" that is written by Bob Brown/ Wally Johnson. The subject/ story of this song is where the poet lives, where people live, what their home looks like with all the different types of animals that live around the home, where the home is located, what types of food are found and eaten in the kitchen, and also what sort of plants surround the home. The main emotions expressed in this poem are happy, he expresses the outback as a laid back area, he also expresses love, and positive remarks. The poet has used the following poetic devises to create a clear picture in the mind of the reader. These help to convey the message and include end rhyme three lines that that all end in the same sound, internal rhymes "sights" and "delights", "a sheep or two and a kangaroo", personification- "kookaburra's singing" and "possums playing", Onomatopoeia in the actual song there is a kookaburra's call. Aspects of the Australian National Identity that are addressed in this song include Gumtrees, possum, veranda, rocking chair, kangaroo, agriculture, fruit trees in the backyard, veggie patch, style of home. I believe that this is an accurate representation of our National Identity because this is how some or more of Australians live and how Australians used to live. These things are also found in Australia no matter where you go. The view being expressed by the writer is very positive because he loves the outback and this is how he wants other people to view Australia.

Please note that this sample paper on Australian Poetry is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes.
