Analytical Essay on 'Race Relations'

In the poem, 'Race Relations' by Jean Burgess the main theme is the discrimination against the little black girl, we know this because the two little girls were playing together in their own little world doing no harm until the white girls' mother started cursing her daughter for interacting with a black girl even though they were doing nothing wrong

This was conveyed to us because before the mother realised her daughter was playing with a black girl she was calmer.

A main idea portrayed in this poem is the parents' influence on the little girl, as she did not see anything wrong with playing with the black girl and would not have seen anything wrong with it if her mother had not yelled at her for doing it. We know this as the Jean Burgess writes about the little white girl leaving as 'Dragging her feet Mary moved slowly, moved towards her mother' so we realise Mary doesn't want to leave because she is dragging her feet and also being forced to leave by her mother.

Another main idea is the whites showing prejudice towards the little black girl as she has not shown an act in which the white parents could form this prejudice against her. Evidence of this prejudice against the black girl is 'How he'll scold you, and serve you right, who have no proper pride.' This shows us that the mother is marginalizing the little black girl as she has judged her by thinking she has no right to play with her daughter.

The children were very happy playing together, we know this because when they were playing together they did not notice anything too busy building their sandcastles evidence of this is the whole first and second paragraphs, 'They played behind the garden wall, the white child and the black; building in the sand the palaces, the bridges and the tall pinnacles of their enchanted land.

They did not feel the wind was growing chill; They did not see the sun had left the wall; this shows us how they were in their own little world and enjoying each others company so we understand there was no reason to stop them playing together. They writer conveyed this by emphasising their obliviousness to not noticing the wind becoming colder, and it becoming dark.

All the main themes in this poem tie in with the theme very closely since they all relate back to discrimination of the black girl as she does nothing wrong to deserve the treatment she gets from the mother also when the little white girl spends time with the black girl they become good friends and are separated by the parents influence, I think Jean Burgess tries to get us to realise this is why we are not all friends as we judge people by what we are influenced by before we give them a chance to get to know them.

Iliad

The existence of Gods, their connection to human beings, and human emotions are greatly expressed throughout "Iliad", an immensely interesting Greek poem by Homer. What is especially interesting is the appearance of the bravest heroes on each side, Achilleus in Greece and Hector in Troy, which separates the "Iliad" into antagonistic feelings; one of them being negative human emotions and the other one expressed through tender-hearted humanism.

Even though the cause of war is Troy's fault in taking Helen from Menelaos, readers experience that their sympathy goes to the Trojans. The reason for this is led by the contrasting description of characteristics between Achilleus and Hector. Achilleus is depicted as an overly egotistic and violent person; his mind is full of rage and anger. For example, Achilleus gets angry after a quarrel with Agamemnon. He thinks the king of Achaians made a huge mistake about taking Achilleus's war triumph gift, Brises, instead of returning the King's girl, Chryses, to be forgiven by the Apollo God. In the end, Achilleus grows hatred for Agamemnon; and then he tells the story to Thetis, his mother, who is also the daughter of Sea God. Because she loves her son so much, she accepts Achilleus's proposal to never give the victory of the war to Greece until Achilleus participates in the Troy war. After this, many soldiers of Achaians die and are injured including Agamemnon and his best warriors. So, Agamemnon decides to get help from Achilleus and also offers very valuable gifts. But Achilleus's mind is still full of anger and he says he will never forgive Agamemnon. However, the death of his lovely companion, Patroklos, makes Achilleus change. He begins to feel sad and his anger turns towards Hector instead of Agamemnon. Finally, Achilleus fights in the Troy war, so the victory of the war goes to Greece.

In contrast to Achilleus, Homer describes Hector not only as a great war hero but also as a tender human being. When he comes back to his palace from the war to take a short rest, he meets his family where his actions are no longer those of a warrior's. He is a soft-hearted human being who loves his son and wife. He also worries about the town of Troy, the Trojan wives, and their innocent children. Futhermore, he really wants to finish this long and cruel war in a peaceful manner by returning Helen to Greece so that all Trojans live peacefully with their lovely family. But that was just his hope; he could not stop the Troy war and his destiny fell into Achilleus's hands.

In describing the two contrasting characters, Achilleus and Hector, Homer tries to explain the two poles of human emotion. Readers see negative human emotions, which are anger, detestation, and violence, through the actions of Achilleus. Then, on the other hand, Homer reveals good human emotions through Hector, who loves and cares for his family and his people. As a result, readers sympathize with Hector and his people regardless of the cause of the Troy war.

When the announcement in February 17, that a team of Scottish scientists had cloned an adult sheep was made, there were many different views expressed regarding cloning humans. Though in disagreement on whether cloning should be allowed, there were two writers, Daniel J. Kevles and Ellen Goodman, that shared three similar views in common. The first is that the possibility exists that humans can be cloned. Also, both state that there are ethical dilemmas related to cloning. And each believes that cloning people would not work, as people are a product of their environment.

Though Dolly is only a sheep, the prospects of human cloning seem to loom large. In his article, Kevles states that the birth of Dolly "… marks a milestone in our ability to engineer animals … It also signals that humans can, in principal, be cloned too."(1). Along this same line, Ellen Goodman writes that we won't be able to clone people any day soon (14). She then quotes the creator of Dolly, Dr. Ian Wilmut as stating "there is no reason in principle why you couldn't do it."(14).

There is much debate on the ethics of cloning. Kevles states that "The Church of Scotland suggested that cloning animals runs contrary to God's bio-diversity. Dr. Wilmut himself suggested that cloning humans would be "ethically unacceptable"."(1). On cloning humans, Goodman also quoted Dr. Ian Wilmut as saying, "All of us would find that offensive."(14). Then states "Creepy is a better word, not to mention ethically appalling. For openers, Wilmut had to use 00 embryos to get his Dolly. He had a number of deformed offspring who died along the way."(Goodman 14 15).

Cheap University Papers on Synthesis

Both writers seem to believe that real people cannot be cloned. That a person is more than just their genetic makeup. "Scientists have long speculated about manipulating genes to produce Einsteins, Heifetzes, and Hemingways. Now impresarios can dream of cloning … The fantasies are endless, but they are just fantasies. People are the products not only of their genes but of their environments." (Kevles 1). Ellen Goodman echoes this sentiment "In a perverse way, Dolly may force us to remember that people are not just conceived; we are raised. We are the products of our environments as well as our genes." (15). Both use examples of Einstein who "might stay home with the kids so Milva could finally get her PhD." (Goodman 15), or "might grow up to be Steven Spielberg." (Kevles 1), to help us see their point of view.

The debate on cloning is far from over. And as can be seen from these two writers, views can and may overlap. Although Kevles argues that "For now, cloning should rightly be confined to animals. But as the technology evolves to invite human experimentation, it would be better to watch and regulate than prohibit" (14), he still shares similar views with Goodman, who states "It's the quite proper instinct that now demands a universal No! Humans are not for cloning." (15).

Opposites

Life is full of mystery. People, animals, and nature have these mysterious characteristics that are strange and unknown to anyone. The universe is composed of so many beautiful things, but at the same time these beautiful wonders can also be the most violent and unpleasant.

LeGuin and Dillard wrote of "opposites", one dealing with man and his psychological structure, and the other, with nature and everything in it. Both authors start their essays with a story to help understand their thesis, and then they begin to explain and support their ideas. In Heaven and Earth In Jest, Dillard uses more of a comparison approach to help the reader better understand her thesis. For example, she wrote, "And some mornings I'd wake in daylight to find my body covered with paw prints in blood I looked as though I'd been painted with roses." She describes how she would wake up sometimes in the morning to find her body covered with blood, from the cat that would jump through her window, but she uses a comparison technique, making the event seem horrific, but at the same time beautiful. She writes, "It could have been the rose of union, the blood of murder, or the rose of beauty bare and the blood of some unspeakable sacrifice or birth." Dillard uses comparison to make the blood seem both mysterious and deathly, but also beautiful. In The Child and the Shadow, LeGuin uses more of a symbolic technique. The man representing all that is civilized, and the shadow representing the dark side of the man's soul.

Dillard's essay, Heaven and Earth In Jest, points out nature's violence, but also it's mystery. She begins to tell stories of beauty in nature, such as watching frogs by the water, and ends them by a giant water bug eating the frog. Dillard begins each story with beauty and ends it with a tragic event. LeGuin's essay, The Child and the Shadow, emphasizes on a person's conscious and unconscious mind. She focuses on the way people act and how their mind affects their actions. LeGuin says, "They do not act by rules; they simply know the way to go," meaning that most people just know in their minds what is the right and wrong thing to do, and react on their certainty. She believes it is a battle between the conscious and unconscious mind, and people act and do certain things due to the unconscious mind. A part of a person, that no one really knows and understands, not even the person themselves.

Life is mysterious. It is full of events, in nature and in ourselves, that we will not fully understand. Battles in our minds, between our conscious and unconscious, and battles in nature, between beauty and tragedy. But as life continues to exist and the battle between opposites continues, there will always be an uncertainty that no one can explain or fully understand.

DNA AND RNA

1) In replication the complementary base pairing is used when the DNA double helix unzips and the two strands separate. They act as templates and direct the synthesis of a new complementary strand which is possible because of the rule of complementary base pairing. Transcription is the process of synthesizing the mRNA from DNA. Complementary base pairing is used to form the mRNA and also to transcribe the message of the DNA to the mRNA. Translation is the process of making proteins, which takes place on the ribosome. The tRNA translates the message from the DNA by forming complementary base pairs with the mRNA.

) DNA is the substance that stores and transmits genetic information, which is the fundamental condition of life.

Chromosomes are linear strands of DNA and associated proteins that carries the genes that determine heredity.

A gene is a section of DNA, which codes for a particular protein.

) DNA is a polymer or better said is a polynucleotide, which means that is, made of a certain number of necleotides. Nucleotides have three parts phospate, five-carbon sugar, and nitrogenous base. These there parts are all held together by covalent bonds. Between the complementary base pairs, the double helix is held together by weak hydrogen bonds.

4) DNA replication occurs during interphase in preparation for mitosis. During mitosis, a cell makes another cell by making a copy of itself. That is why DNA replicates itself too and it does in a stage called the "S" phase of the cell. DNA replication starts with the action of enzymes who help the double helix unsip by seperating the paired bases at the weak hydrogen bonds. Now in the cell, there are two strands of DNA that start acting as templates or guides. Each of these directs the synthesis of a new complementary strand along its length and it uses the raw material in the cell.

DNA RNA

5) - it has deoxyribose sugar - it has ribose sugar

- the bases (T, A, C, G) - the bases (U, A, C, G)

- its shape is a double helix- its shape is a single helix

Explanations for Ethnic Discrimination

There are many different explanations as to why ethnic discrimination exists. In the article Adolescent Bigotry the author claims that people are intolerant of differences. Hostility towards people causes prejudices and discrimination. The example of Jewish people is given, claiming that because on average they tend to do well in school and come from affluent families, resentment towards them develops. Because of this, other students held them in a negative light, claiming that they were bossy, deceitful, and selfish. The author claims that a lack of education causes people to stereotype. Being uneducated, they are unable to think things through and realize that generalizations are illogical. They just point at the easiest, most obvious answer that is normally the race or ethnicity of the people in question.

The author of What We Think Of Other People states that stereotypes are mental pictures that exist in our heads and affect our perception of others. Many times the stereotype depends on whether the presence of the ethnic group or race is seen as favorable to the society. If the group is seen as advantageous, such as supplying inexpensive labor, then the stereotype is often positive. Statements are made that they are hard working and ambitious. If the group is viewed as disadvantageous, such as taking all the good jobs, negative traits are associated with them like selfish, bossy and deceitful. The author claims that the stereotype changes depending on circumstances that are many times out of the person's control.

In the article Explaining Discrimination it is claimed that discrimination occurs because it is learned through culture from a young age. People are constantly exposed to opinions of other ethnic groups regarding their attributes and social ranks. Due to this, people may feel negative emotions towards entire groups of people without actually knowing why. The author explains that people accept others that are most like themselves, seeing their own traits as favorable. He also claims that people who have an authoritarian personality are most receptive to prejudice, being insecure and fearful of anything new.

Of the three articles, I believe that the author of the What We Think Of Other People presented the most convincing argument. It seemed to deal with the causes of discrimination, and provide logical explanations as to why some stereotypes are negative while others are positive. The claim that the stereotype changes with the circumstances accounts for why views of ethnic groups and races do change. It appears to give the most reasonable answers, and deals with the emotions and hostility behind discrimination.
