Opening sequence the film starts with a helicopter shot looking over "white suburbia" a nice neighborhood and in a nice suburb. Then we move to a shot of Lester played by Kevin Spacey in the shower masturbating describing this as the most exciting part of his day. This then highlights Lester's sexual frustration a married father who hasn't had sex in a while with his wife Carolyn played by Annette Bening who appears to be more concerned about her house as well as her appearance of marital bliss. "In order to be successful one must project a image of Success" a statement to which we later we learn is the basis to Carolyn's existence. Placing her value on status and could be best described as a "bloodless, money grubbing freak" who in her mission to achieve her so called success has shielded herself from intimacy.

Lester's body language suggests that life has become a drag for him. Its almost as if it's a mission for him to get up in the morning as he later says "Both my wife and daughter think im a gigantic loser and there right I have lost something and I didn't always feel this sedated. This is supported by the high and low angle shots between Lester and Carolyn when Carolyn appears to be in control and Lester not. High angle shots to suggest that Carolyn is in control of this relationship and low angle at Lester suggesting he is far less superior to her. "Our marriage is just a show- a commercial for how normal we are, when we are when we are anything but. A thought expressed by Lester

Cheap University Papers on American beauty essay how does Sam Mendez establish the relationship between the members of the burnham family in the opening sequence and the first dinner table sequence?

We also then see Lester slumped in the back of the car suggesting that his day is going to be a drag his body language enforces the fact that he feels sedated and that he has lost his lease on life. He hates his job he's sexual frustrated and he marriage could be described as empty this is all supported and expressed through his body language and his thoughts of and opinions viewed through his own confessions and those used by the camera.

As we all have come to realize and will all later experience most teenagers view their parents as strange but for Jane played by Thora Birch this is much a state of reality as it is state of mind. Her father Lester is going through a mid life crises at 4 and what can be best described as being apathetic to everything. Jane defiantly views her father as this gigantic loser as expressed by Lester himself. She doesn't have time for him and also doesn't really speak very highly of him Jane is confused and also seems to be displeased by her physical appearance she is saving up for breast augmentation surgery which suggests feelings in insecurity. Jane who I also believe might feel the same way as her dad as if she doesn't really matter to anyone and she is more the girl that nobody seems to show an interest

The dining room sequence the lighting used in this scene is used to place great emphasis on the bunch of American Beauty roses placed on the centre of the table the lighting around the Burnham family appearing morbid and dim in comparison. We also see how Carolyn describes her day and how she hopes to achieve future success. With Lester also once again appearing disinterested and "numb" from the happenings around him with the dreary and rather monotonous music played in the background.

I'm alone, cold, isolated. This is the way it has always been. For as long as I can remember. Although I cannot remember any other lifestyle I am certain that there is something better out there for me. I know this because it is what keeps me going from day to day as I wander the endless passageways, which I call my home. Its hope that keeps me going and its hope that will get me out of here.

I don't know who I am, or what I am. Although what I do know is that I am not normal. If I were, people who have come into contact with me in my home would not have run off screaming or tried to kill me. It is not my destiny to get killed in a trap so I have decided to myself that once and for all, I will not continue to be like a mouse in a maze. I am going to escape.

The doors to my chamber are opened every full moon, and its then when the strangers wander and prepare for their attacks on me. Although this time will be different, after this time I will be free.

Through the squeaking of the rats and the dripping from the roof comes the voice "Come on everyone, this is the way I'm sure of it. Now don't attack until you hear my command, we are going to kill it, just wait for the command." This is my home, they are intruding on me and they know me as 'it'. Hearing this just fuels my rage more and I am ready for the battle, ready to escape.

They are close now, I can feel it, and if I listen carefully enough I can heat the pitter-patter of tiny feet. Just a corner separates us now. I venture tip toeing quietly like a mouse in a maze.

There they are. I can just make out their shadows creeping along the walls. They don't look too big, in fact none of the past intruders looked big. Maybe I am just a monster and maybe this is my punishment. However there is no turning back now.

Our eyes lock and before I know it they are running towards me "Now" screams one member of the group. I am outnumbered for there are about six of them and only one of me.

The first one lunges at me and hurls a fist towards my face although after spending my life in the maze, having to feed off rats my reflexes have grown strong and I manage to avoid his punch. However I am not so successful at ducking the next punch, and the next or the next. "Take this nigger," One screams.

"You don't belong in this world," another says. "You're nothing but a black monster." They now have me pinned down on the ground, I can't get up, and still they keep punching my chest and head. "What have I done to deserve this?" I say. "You killed and raped my sister," one shouts.

"That's impossible, I have been trapped here for at least the last 10years." I explained.

"Doesn't matter, you niggers are all the same. We are doing society a favour by getting another one of you off the planet." One says to me.

Suddenly it occurs to me that I have been planning this evening all wrong. I think to myself 'Why do I want to go out into a world full of people like this group?' Maybe this peaceful world is not past the same doors that these people crawled through. Maybe it will be more peaceful when this life is over. So therefore I won't fight back.

I just lie there and take the punches. I cannot fight any longer, I have given up. Hopefully life after death will be better that the life I live in at the moment.

The punches are starting to grow stronger, and then one of the members of the group pulls out a long shiny sword, to finish me off. As the attacker lunges it towards my neck, I see myself in the swords reflection. This is the first time I have ever seen myself as everyone else sees me, the only difference between me and the men beating me is the colour of my skin.

'I'm a black monster I think to myself, then what are these men, they're nothing but white monsters. It's with this glimpse I am positive that I am going somewhere better, somewhere where people don't kill others just because of the colour of their skin. "I will be free." I say to myself as the sword plunges into my neck.

The world around me is now all dark; it's all now over. Or is it? All of a sudden I'm outside. "So this is what sunlight feels like" I say to myself. "Where am I?" I wonder I look over to my right and see golden gates; I know where I am. I am finally home.

One of the primary roles of government in the marketplace is to protect the end user. This can become difficult at times in our free market society as consumers create a demand for a product that, overall, may not be in their best interest to use. But where there is demand, supply will surely emerge. With our capitalistic form of government, declaring a product unsuitable for sale is a complicated matter, especially when Republicans are calling the shots.

One recent development that has brought this issue up for debate is the death of Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler, a -year-old who had been taking Xenadrine RFA-1 during spring training to help him shed the ten pounds he needed to lose to get to his playing weight. During a workout on a warm mid-February day in Florida, Bechler's body temperature shot up to 108 degrees and he fell victim to heatstroke.

An ingredient in Xenadrine is the herb ephedra, which contains ephedrine. Since ephedra is an herb, it is allowed to circumvent FDA rules and fall under the more lenient Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), which was pushed through Congress by powerful Senator Orrin Hatch. Hatch represents Utah, where approximately 0% of the nation's supplements are made.

The DSHEA puts the burden of proof on the FDA and requires that agency to prove ephedra is a dangerous product. This is despite the fact it contains ephedrine, which has been classified as a drug and is thus "held to the FDA's more stringent drug standard when it is extracted and sold as medicine." (Wolff) While there had already been roughly 1,500 reports of complications deriving from ephedra use and about 100 deaths, it wasn't until Bechler's passing that this issue has drawn any notable attention from the media.

So should the government continue to allow the sale of potentially hazardous products such as those containing ephedra? Shouldn't it at least be classified as a drug since one of its key components is a drug? A utilitarian approach is necessary to answer these questions. Labeling ephedra as a drug would certainly protect consumers but it would also have a negative economic impact on an industry that generates approximately $ billion in sales each year.

Consumers need protection from big business. Scandals such as those that erupted at Enron and WorldCom show companies are fully capable of making profits a higher priority than people. How many more fatalities would have occurred by now if auto safety regulations allowed Ford to continue producing cars such as the Pinto? What are the chances R.J. Reynolds would voluntarily set off on an advertising campaign that discourages smoking if it hadn't been mandated to do so in a settlement with the Attorneys General from several states?

But consumers also can't expect the government to hold their hand through every buying decision. Ephedra certainly isn't alone in its being an item available for consumption on the marketplace that could cause bodily harm under certain conditions if the directions on the bottle aren't followed. While they may require more time to inflict their damage, smoking and excessive drinking are just as dangerous and are addictive as well. I don't recall seeing a warning label on the Big Mac I had at McDonald's the other day. It would be difficult to imagine the total damage to our economy if compensatory justice was doled out whenever a buyer was slighted in the least. Consumers have the right to government protection but the line must be drawn somewhere.

I would recommend Congress close the loophole in the DSHEA that allows drugs to be used as ingredients in herbs and thus avoid the watchful eye of the FDA (the results of a Rand study on ephedra, commissioned by the Bush Administration, are due within weeks). This would allow ephedra to stay on the market but make it a little more difficult to obtain. While a doctor could have seen Bechler's high blood pressure as reason not to prescribe it, that same doctor would have had no control over the fact Bechler took more pills than clearly permitted in the directions on the package. In the end, it's nice to have our government around as a safety buffer but each of us must take at least some responsibility for our own decisions.

Despite the controversy, this was not a major story in any of the magazines I reviewed for this paper. Most did a good job of presenting the basic facts but they did this story no justice by not allocating enough print to allow an in-depth analysis of the issue. It doesn't reflect well on our society that a good portion of my sources came from sports pages and these sources provided the best coverage.

·Team Size 5 10 people

Abstract

The approach described in this paper, facilitated by knowledge management and learning organization, ultimately aims to integrate the use of business processes to build and manage intellectual capital, which essentially leads to operational excellence and greater return on investments particularly for small application development organizations.

Lets take for example a small implementation team. In these teams, not all members would have been trained or given formal education of the system prior to the implementation. In such cases the team gathers knowledge as they progress along the implementation. This type of knowledge is attained through experience therefore is contained or restricted to the person who gained the experience. This is a typical scenario, however, the problem arises when the person leaves the team. Secondly, in some situations, you find redundant research and analysis is done because one team member does not know that the other has the information required.

Many such teams do not know what they know. Today's organizations are so complex that knowledge is fragmented, difficult to locate and share, and, therefore redundant, inconsistent or not used at all. Such a situation can often lead to duplication of effort, which only proves to be unproductive.

The question is, how can we store and fully utilize the experience and knowledge gathered by each individual team member? In this situation, knowledge management plays a key role. Knowledge management helps an organization to gain insight and understanding from its own experience.

Most processes are too heavy and require a large overhead in terms of resources. However, this document speaks of a more practical approach that can be implemented by small sized implementation teams without having to forgo the benefits of a more full range of business processes. An integration of configuration, release service request as well as problem management is applied to this approach. These improved business processes are used to build the intellectual capital that goes on to achieve zero default.

Approach

Since most development environments are cross platforms, a heterogeneous configuration management tool is encouraged. An example would be Rational Clear Case LT. This tool performs at an automation level to manage the knowledge flow. Key contribution include

1.Concurrent development thus improving productivity.

.The history of development through versioning can be tracked in order to prevent similar bugs from being created.

.Promote better control mechanism for release management with more efficiently controlled code baselines

4.The integration of service request and problem management with configuration management facilitates the tracking of all changes that enables future developers to understand and implement similar fixes.

Key Challenges

1.Implementation of the full scale of business processes incurs a large overhead thus resulting in un-productivity.

.Shortage of resources. In most cases there isn't a designated process administrator.

.Heavy processes hinder rapid change.

4.Developers concentrate on their own functional area therefore there is no sharing of knowledge across functional areas.

In a nutshell, this document describes a practical approach to software development by small teams with emphasize on knowledge growth and retention.

Introduction

1.1Background-

Dryland salinity is when the salt is moved to the land surface with the ground water and is the most damaging form of salinity. The Southwest of western Australia is being over run by salinity and something needs to be done about it. The problem is getting so dramatic that it is predicted that within the next 50 yearsextinctions in the wheatbelt will cost us 450 species of plant, 80 species of invertebrates and 75% of waterbirds. In 18 there were 64,000 hectares affected by salinity, by 16 this number had increased to 1,804,000 hectares. Although there are many projects in place, I believe that the development of underground drainage could go a long way to eradicating this long term environmental problem.

1.Aim-

Do my essay on Salinity CHEAP !

My aim is to put in place a project that over the next ten to twenty years can eliminate the threat that salinity is bestowing upon us. The project involves putting in place an underground drainage system that can eliminate the rising ground waters and keep them at a safe depth.

Body

.1 Impact-

Dryland salinity affects land and water resourses not only at the site but elsewhere in the catchment or outside the catchment (downstream). It is more pervasive than other forms of degredation, but is closely linked. For examlple, it can cause soil erosion, nutrient build up in streams which can promote algal blooms, as well as the loss of plants from river or creek edge leading to riverbank erosion and loss of wildlife habitat. On farms, salinity reduces productivity of the soil, thus decreases income and the capital value of the land. Salinity damages infrastructure, salinises water storage, causes loss of farm flaura and fauna andd loss of shelter for livestock. These effects are magnified at the regional level. Salinity can also and is having a substantial impact on public resources such as water supplies, roads and biodiversity.

. The Drain-

On his farm in Kojonup, Stuart Tohl, environmentalist, farmer, engineer and inventor applied some lateral thinking to the salinity problem. His system involves draining underground water away in a controlled fashion that does not allow it to create further environmental effects on his property.

The drains do a very similar job to that of an conventional open drain, but you don't loose any land and doubles as an effective recyclable use. In fact just one kilometre of drainage uses approximately 8,000 typical car tyres. These tyres once burnt or left out in the UV rays, are put to rest remaining relatively stable in the sub-surface conditions. Depreciating steel components appear to have no effect either. To date there has been no evidence of invasion in the drains, even where tress have been planted close to the run of the drains.

This underground drain comes into its own when you have a salt effected area in the middle of a paddock. If you put a conventional drain in you would loose what could be valuable land and would quite frankly become very annoying. The underground drain on the other hand is excellent in that once the soil has settled the farmer is still able to use his land.

. Proposal-

My proposal is to build a network of these underground drains not only involving each individual farm but combining whole salt effected regions. This will effectively lower the water table a lot faster than working individually and in the long run will be more cost effective. If the water table can be lowered then this will improve soil productivity greatly and will reduce the annual fertilizer bill, freeing up money to be put into making your farm more efficient. It will also lesson the impact chemicals are having on our environment. It is hoped that we can eradicate 100 acres of salt effect land per farm every five years, leading to greater income for the farmer and a much higher capital value for the land.

.4 Cost-

Although at this stage the drains do cost approximately $8,000 per kilometre, it is believed that once the manufacturing of the drains become more efficient, this figure should fall to approximately $5,000. One advantage of the drain is that it is possible to be paid to use the tyres and once a large program is in place, it is hopeful that the government may rebate those who do use this form of drainage.

.1 Conclusion-

Although the drain is relatively new still it has been proven to be very successful. If a program or series of drains involving a whole region can be put in place then I this will lower the water table and improve soil productivity dramatically. It will also mean that less fertilizer will be needed and therefore lowering the cost of running a viable farm and also go along way to keeping the environment chemical free.

English Essay

Mendes says' you zoom past the thing you think is beautiful"

How does the film support this comment?

This statement made by Medes is supported by the film in many ways. To start off with the title American Beauty gives the viewer the impression that the film is a happy film about your typical family living the 'so called' American dream. Beauty is represented in the form of the young teen Angela. Angela is an attractive teen who is extremely ambitious in her dream to become a world famous model. She gives of the impression that she is an experienced sex kitten Jane believes everything Angela tells her about her non existent sex life and in a way looks up to Angela because in Jane's mind Angela is normal. The truth of the matter is that Angela is a virgin and is extremely insecure about herself. In a way her lying to those around her helps her to deal with her insecurities. Angels uses her friendship with Jane (a confused teen who thinks the world is against her) to make her feel better about herself.

Help with essay on COmpare the lighting in AMerican Beauty

The opening scene of the movies is set in beautiful American suburb with families and their little white picket fences. This opening scene contributes greatly to Mendes statement about beauty. The beauty and simplicity of their lives makes us think that this is your average happy family. The Burmans this family consists of three members. Lester, Jane and her mother. Lester's life is seen as one big battle for him. For his mind life is the same st but a on a different day. Lester feels caged in and trapped in his life. His daughter thinks of him as a gigantic looser and his wife has lost all respect for him. Lester is almost like a second child. He receives no respect from his daughter or his wife. His job is a total dead end and he sees no future. Lester is basically waiting for his life to come to an end.

Jane is your average teen. All teenagers go through phases when they feel that the world is against them and nothing seems to go right for them. Yet Jane's problems run deeper. She is insecure about her body, which clearly has no faults. She saves up for a breast enlargement which does not even need. Her mother insults her indirectly and her father does not even acknowledge her existence. Angela is some one she can talk to about her problems and therefore she confides in Angela.

Jane's mother deludes herself into thinking that there is nothing wrong in her life. She invests all her time into her career and hides away in her work. She is extremely negative towards her daughter and husband and has lost all respect for Lester. Her motto is "To be successful one must project an image of success". She clearly is not happy in her marriage yet stays married to Lester purely for the sake of her career. She then later in the film has an affair with the so called "real-estate King"

A family moves in next door. This family also has their own set of problems. Ricky the young boy receives no love from his father or mother. His father treats him like a navy recruit while his mother has been terribly traumatized that she no longer feels the need to speak. Ricky expresses his feelings in his video camera and tries to find beauty in almost everything he comes across. He later develops an interest in Jane and starts to film her every opportunity he gets. Jane loves the attention as she never receives any fat home or from anybody else. They immediately are attracted to one another and their relationship develops. For Ricky this is the first time ever that he has experienced what he thinks is love. Ricky's father deludes himself into believing that his son is no longer taking drugs and that he earns hi money legitimately. Later in the movie Ricky's father get the wrong end of the stick and thinks his son is gay with Lester while infact he was only his drug dealer. He then murders Lester in cold blood.

The film is a true reflection that things are not always what they seem. What we think is the truth could in actual fact be the complete opposite. On the surface things seem perfectly fine and beautiful but we need to look closer and get a deeper understanding of what is the actual truth. The film supports Mendes's statement greatly because on the surface we see a normal happy family living the American dream but when we look closer and dig deeper into their lives and happenings we see the honest truth. To understand fully we have to look closer.

Death Equals Life

In 17 Jonathon Swift proposed a very unusual idea to save a starving kingdom. Through his essay "A Modest Proposal" his idea becomes known to the public. In this essay Swift brings to mind how to save the kingdom. There was an over population of children and their poor parents, with no way to get food except for begging. Even then there was not enough. Swift's idea was to make the extra children into meals for family dinners. Also to have certain couples as "breeders" and only save a fraction of the children born to replace the "breeders" when they are too old.

Swift was born on November 0, 1667 and was very troubled because he had never met his father. For this reason he felt that his birth as "being dropped rather than born in Irish soil"(Biography). He was once one of the starving children begging for food with his mother. He has seen and dealt with the problem first hand and because of this truth it could be his reasoning for writing his essay.

Swift describes the background of the lives of both the kids and the mothers, explaining how the kids are just hanging over their moms with rags on for clothes begging for food and shelter (Swift 1). This is a strong case that the society is full of starvation and death because of mistreatment and over population. Swift does a good job of creating an image in the minds of his readers and a sad feeling for everyone that is starving and begging. By the statement every day dying and rotting by cold and famine, and filth and vermin, helps create that scene for the readers' senses. Swift makes the readers feel as though they are part of what was happening in the kingdom.

Swift states that the advantages of the proposal are made obvious. He uses these steps stating the benefits of his proposal in detail. First, it would greatly cut the number of papists. Second, the poorer tenants will have something valuable and pay for their landlords rent. Third, there would be an increase in money and circulating among the kingdom also cutting the starvation back. Fourth, the breeders will not only be paid for their children but also be rid of the children's maintenance. Fifth, this food would bring a custom to the kingdom. Last, this would be a great inducement to marriage, which all nations have encouraged by rewords or by force. With all of these truths Swift strengthens his feeling towards his objective creating a sense of "maybe he's right" (Swift 4).

Swift also goes into detail of describing his logic in using the infants as a source of food. There will always be "Infant's flesh throughout the year, but more plentiful in March and a little before and after" (Swift ). Children are over abundant in the Irish kingdom; therefore he proves that this would end starvation by creating an abundance of food. Swift also uses good language and writing skills that appeals to the public, in his essay, because they were used during that time. It helps his purpose for writing it because it is easier to understand to those of that era. That is the everyday language for them so it was easier for them to read, making them think about all of his points to why children should be used as food instead of rotting away.

Swift says that "I am not so violently bent upon my own opinions as to reject any offer proposed by wise men, but before something of that kind shall be advanced in contradiction to my scheme, had to look at what he is saying" (Swift 5). This statement is saying that he will look to what others think but he is already going to read it thinking his opinion to be superior. This has a negative affect on his essay because he is refusing to view others as he expects them to view his statements. This may sway others to come out with the same affect as he is looking at their opinions. This story today would be absolutely torn apart, and Swift would be shunned and have constant hate mail. With all of the religious people in today's society and their thinking that every life is precious, this idea of Swift's would not go over so well.

This is a great example of the differences in the countries and time periods deal with problems. Swift's ideas are very aggressive and very strongly supported, but also leave room for doubt. The upper class gets the work and food as the lower class gets the money and shelter. With this essay Swift proposes a disgusting idea that works for his time period and his starving Irish kingdom.
