In Tennessee Williams's play The Glass Menagerie, the characters' perspectives of reality are mixed with those of appearance. Amanda, the mother, tries to make the lives of her children perfect, but in doing so, only causes them grief and anguish. Amanda still lives in the past and sees no reason why her two children should live anything but perfect lives. However, her children, Laura, a crippled and unsociable girl; and Tom, an ambitious young man, believe they should be able to choose their own paths of life. William conveys the theme that several people feel a need to set unreasonable standards for those they love. Amanda's unwillingness to see Laura for what she really is causes her to make expectations for Laura that are out of her reach, and forces Tom to escape his family so that he no longer feels the pressure of being good enough for his mother.

Amanda sets goals of unreachable status for her children and will not see them for what they really are. Amanda sees no reason why her children should not be perfect and forces her upon visitors, by saying "It's rare for a girl as sweet an' pretty as Laura to be domestic! But Laura is, thank heaven, not only pretty but also very domestic" (Williams 14). Amanda distorts her mind in a way that makes Laura's vices invisible. She believes Laura should have every chance at life that she once had as a young woman and tries to block out all of her inabilities. Amanda believes that if her children failed in life, then she is a failure as a person. She is not able to "accept the reality of the world with which we're presented" (Truman). Amanda feels the need to control her children's' lives, not recognizing their own capability for survival. She has preconceived notions of how her family should live and will not stop in her to quest to find them happiness. Amanda can not find happiness in the life she has lead, instead depends on Tom and Laura to "bring her the happiness that her husband failed to give her" (www.pinkmonkey.com). Amanda does not fully understand the needs of her children, only focuses on their faults. She refuses to accept that Laura is different, forcing her into uncomfortable and awkward situations, that cause them both stress.

Amanda's expectations of Laura cause her to lead a life filled with loneliness and a lack of self-respect. Laura's glass animals are very delicate, and a slight pressure can make the "glass break so easily. No matter how careful you are" (Williams 1). Laura's fascination in plants and animals becomes a world of adventure in her mind, a world of dreams, a world of disappointments. Laura's love for rare glass specimens is also a love for herself, being that Laura is a rare specimen in a world of perfection that her mother has created. Laura's memories of her childhood and previous encounter with Tom have been twisted into a bizarre fantasy, making it clear "that her memories are really illusions" (Lumley 61). Laura has a distorted image of herself, resulting in a lack of self-confidence. This trait leads Laura to become quiet and mysterious and misunderstood in public. She begins to lose all base with reality, almost encountering the edge of insanity. However, once Laura is able to break through the barrier of social nervousness and inexperience, she begins to "love the light" (Williams 18). The glass unicorn is a representation of Laura; and in certain conditions, both objects can begin to gleam. Laura begins to shine through the tests she has been put through and for a few moments, is accepted by the outside world.

Amanda's frustration and nagging begins to wear on Tom, eventually causing him to break all ties with his mother. Amanda wants to give Tom "the chance to lead a normal life" (Truman) but in doing so, increases Tom's desire to start a life of his own. Tom is contradicted in his dreams of exploration and adventure and his devotion to his sister. He believes that casting Laura into the cold world outside of the Wingfield household is cruel, and attempts to convince Amanda that she is not fit for a normal life. Tom's dreams of escape come with a price. He is not able to leave "his coffin without removing one nail" (Williams 7). Tom's departure causes despair and tension in the house. In order to escape this situation, Tom must see Amanda and Laura as their true selves and be able to cut all ties with them.

Amanda's unfulfilled life causes her to nag her children constantly, which in turn, creates a daughter with little self-confidence and knowledge of the outside world and a son who can not decide what is more important to himhis family or his dreams. This relates to all of us, having had to make a decision between two objects that are close to our hearts. In the 16 movie Tom Jones, directed by Tony Richardson and starring Albert Finney, the main character Tom, cannot decide on whether a life of mischief and lust or one filled with love is right for him. Combined with the pressures that his uncle, Squire Allworthy, force upon him, Tom goes through many adventures before deciding what life means to him.

The Importance of Nutrition and Fitness in Our Lifes

Nutrition has played a significant role in human life, even before we were born, although we may not always have been aware of it. And it will continue to affect us in major ways, depending on the foods we select. Each days choices may benefit or harm humans health only a little, but when these choices are repeated over years and decades, the rewards or consequences become major. Fitness is as essential as food to us in order to stay healthy. As research shows that most of the consumers in US especially young adults do not know the importance of healthy eating habits, fitness, and disorders it can trigger in humans if they do not eat right and exercise regularly.

Young generation and even older one seem not really to have any knowledge or sufficient amount of knowledge about food in order to stay healthy. The biggest problem right now is that a regular person in USA does not even know how many calories he/she needs and where they come from, what is cholesterol and how much is allowed, and what is effect of sodium on us if eaten in excess. The reason it all happens not only because we do not know what is the effect of those nutrients on us as humans but also because in todays busy life people eat their meals out side of their homes. Meals that we eat today mostly come from the fast food restaurants and those restaurants are the one who sell the food, which contains a lot of fat, sodium, and cholesterol. No more an average family cooks their food at home, which is freshly made from fresh vegetables and fresh products. Younger generation people the same as older generation do not seem to have enough time to eat fresh, well balanced meals, which are natural, and without high amount of fat, sodium, and cholesterol. While most people realize that their food habits affect their health, they often choose foods for other reasons. After all, food brings to the table a variety of pleasures and traditions. The challenge, then, is to combine favorite foods and fun times with a nutritionally balanced diet. Healthy eating habit is not the only factor that helps us to stay healthy but a regular exercising plays as important role as healthy eating habits.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on The Importance of Nutrition and Fitness in Our Life's

Exercising effects our body, mind, and soul. It starts on the inside, people feel better; then the outside, people look better and finally the mind, they are able to think better. Regular exercising can prevent us from many types of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and artery disease. For instance there was a research done by scientist, which states that if somebody has diabetes they say that exercising will greatly increase life spend of that person. Researchers at Harvard School of Public Health asked over 5,000 middle-aged women with type diabetes to keep track of how much and what kinds of exercise-sports, brisk walking, biking, strenuous gardening or housework-they did over a 14-year period. They found that women who engaged in moderate to vigorous exercise at least 4 hours per week were almost 40% less likely to develop heart disease when compared with more sedentary women. High blood pressure cannot be cured, but it can be controlled. Medications can help manage the condition, but theyre expensive and may have bothersome side effects. The findings of this study-- that weight loss and regular physical activity can help lower blood pressure--should encourage people who struggle with hypertension to get into the exercise habit. By changing our life style to include fitness in the way we live our life, it will help us realize our full potential. Life is precious and by becoming fit we can live healthier, happier, and longer life.

As I stated above unhealthy food habit such as food that is high in fat, cholesterol, sodium, and calories and not exercising can led people to different types of diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular, diabetes, and stroke. As a matter a fact researches and statistics show that cancer is the first disease in US why people die and that number can be decrease by regular exercise and right food choice. Many researchers also say that some cardiovascular disease come from eating a food which high in fat and cholesterol. For instance, if someone has too much cholesterol in his food at some point in his/her life there will be too much cholesterol accumulated in the arteries, restricting blood flow and raising blood pressure. The consequences are deadly; in fact, heart disease is nations number one killer of adults.

The healthy eating habit and exercising are the two factors that are not present in todays society. We can see that from statistic, which shows that 1/ of population in US is obese. Clearly, optimal nutrition and exercising plays a key role in keeping people healthy and reducing the risk of chronic disease. So, we as a society have to become more educated about food and exercise in order to get a better future because there is nothing better than being healthy almost all life.

"Out of many, one people" the motto of the small developing island of Jamaica, is the home to .6 million people ranging from China to the United States. On this beautiful island where it seems the sun never stops shinning is the home of the number one crime rate in the world. Based on land size and population Jamaica leads in the world's crime rate followed by Iraq and Iran.

Jamaica economy based on tourism and its natural resources such as bauxite, sugar and coffee keeps this island going. But, crime has Jamaica on its way to further debt and has affected other aspects of its economy such as education, employment, and immigration.

Jamaica's political security has also been affected by crime, and is thought by many people to be the number reason for crime in Jamaica. Since statistics prove that around election time the crime rate goes up. The number of reported crimes, especially crimes of violence involving firearms, began growing during the 160s and escalated sharply in the early 170s.

Violence has characterized Jamaican politics since the slavery era and has surfaced at times of protest or repression. Almost every general or municipal election since independence has been preceded and followed by gang warfare, street outbreaks, and occasional assassinations.

Adding to the rise in crime, Narcotics crime has been on the rise since the late 160's. Marijuana is the leading drug sold and grown Jamaica, Jamaica was supplying an estimated 10 to 15 percent of the total amount of marijuana smuggled into the United States each year. Jamaica's notorious reputation for cultivating and selling weed has also impacted its people chances with immigration as well as crime.

Crime in Jamaica is mostly concentrated in its capital of Kingston and many other inner city areas located around Kingston such as St. Andrews and Tavares garden. These areas are not known to be great tourist areas but with rising horror stories of crime to tourist and native Jamaicans being robbed, murdered, and assaulted it has affected the tourism rate of Jamaica.

Tourism isn't a consistent definition of an economic sector, but it is one of one the most grossing business' in Jamaica. Last year, Jamaica was ranked 7th in tourism in the Caribbean. Tourism is also one of Jamaica's mega investments opening its doors to thousands of employment opportunities.

Organized labor has played a central role in both the economic and political development of Jamaica since the earliest days of self-government. Many factories for clothing lines such as Tommy Hilfiger, DKNY and other name brand stores offer employment in Jamaicans each year only paying them 40- 60 cent's an hour when converted into American dollars. These factors are always brought up around election time and also influence the crime rate on this island.

The education system in Jamaica has been on the rise since the late 170's. Until the 170s, however, the educational system continued to provide insufficient opportunities at the elementary school levels because many of the features inherited from the British educational system remained.

Today the Jamaica school system still follows the British educational system. The island's government has put into motion plans to build 70 new basic schools and extend the school programs to enable more class time for math and English. These actions will rise the graduation age from 16 to 18 yrs. Old.

Along with the increase in the control of crime budget the government will increase the education budget 50% from 10 to 15 percent. Education is still affected by the crime in Jamaica, because the budget could have been higher. Increase in funds for improved police stations and new high tech equipments to identify and detect criminal links, need to be bought and put into action. So, the education system and still comes second best.

Many of Jamaica's crime have been connected to deportees from the United States. Deportees are people that were born in Jamaica but committed a crime in other countries and are sentenced then after there term is sent back to their place of birth.

Deportees most result in more than half of the crime in Jamaica. Most of them do not grow up in Jamaica so when they return they have no family or they don't know where to start their lives from so they live a life of violence to make ends meet.

The government of Jamaica has put into action extreme penalties for deportees caught committing a crime and for government officials who are corrupt. The legislation introduced impeachment to any high elected or non- elected officials for dereliction of duty, abuse of power and corrupt practices. It is thought by many Jamaicans that they government does business with the criminals but there are no facts to back this up.

Statistic have proven the poorer the area the more crime you will see and I believe that if the Jamaican government do not step up to help to develop it's run down neighborhoods, find employment for it's citizens, make it easier to attend school, and control the amount of deportees in Jamaica; there problem will never end. This beautiful island will then be ruined by criminals and lavished with poverty.

Kevin Krug

A Raisin In the Sun

What happens when a black family moves away from the ghetto and moves into an all white neighborhood? The Youngers, an average sized black family living in the ghetto of South Side Chicago, are planning to move into a nicer all white neighborhood in Clybourne Park.

Help with essay on A Raisin in the Sun

Walter Lee Younger, the head of the family, is a very emotional man who is driven by his desire to become wealthy. As one of the main characters in Lorraine Hansberrys play A Raisin in the Sun, Walter has three main character traits which have motivated his behavior throughout the story. These traits are greed, selfishness, and impatience.

Walter shows his impatience from the very beginning of the play when Ruth

wakes him up for work. Walter says, "Well, what was you doing all that yelling for if I

can't even get in there yet?" as he was referring to not being able to get in the bathroom.

Walter also shows his impatience with Ruth when Ruth is telling Walter to eat his eggs because they are getting cold. Walter gets a little upset with her and says "That's it. There you are. Man say to his woman I got a dream. His woman say Eat your eggs." Walter mainly gets upset because Ruth is not listening to what he has to say.

Clearly Walter shows his impatience most when nobody is listening to what he has to say. When Walter is talking to Beneatha about the check, and she tells Walter that the money is Mama's and will not listen to what his plans are. Walter gets extremely frustrated and says, "Nobody in this house is ever going to understand me." Another

good example of this is when Ruth and Mama are talking about the doctor and Walter asks about the money. Mama tells Walter that he should talk to his wife and talk about his plans later. This makes Walter furious and he says, "WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE LISTEN TO ME TODAY!" This is the greatest example of Walter's impatience throughout the story.

Walter also shows that he selfish in the beginning of the play when he says, "He just going to have to start getting up earlier. I can't be late to work on account of him fooling around in there." This shows selfishness because he himself should get up earlier; it is his responsibility to get to work on time.

Walter also shows that he is selfish when he questions mama about where she was all day and whether or not she did anything with the insurance money. Walter says to Mama, "Where were you, Mama? Mama, you didn't go do something with that insurance money, something crazy?" When Mama tells the family that she bought a house in Clybourne Park today, Walter becomes furious, again showing off his strong

disagreement. Bitterly, Walter says, "So that's the peace and conformity you went out and bought for us today." This is by far the strongest example of Walter's selfishness throughout the story.

Walter shows his greed first when he is arguing with Beneatha about the money. Walter thinks that his dreams are more important than her going to school to become a doctor. Beneatha says that she has never asked Mama for money and Walter says, "No!

And the line between asking and just accepting when the time comes is big and wide ain't it!" He says this because he thinks that Mama is going to give Beneatha the money instead of him. Walter shows a great amount of greed when he talks about his plans with Willy Harris. He and Willy want to invest in a liquor store to make money. Walter tries to persuade Ruth into talking Mama into giving him the money for this. Walter says, "Mama would listen to you. You know she listen to you more than she do me and Bennie. She think more of you." This strongly shows that Walter is very greedy at times.

Later on Mama decides to give Walter some of the remaining money to try to follow his dream, and naturally, this makes Walter very happy. Throughout the rest of the play, Walter does not show any of these undesirable traits of his. Walter gave his share of the money to his partner to invest it in the liquor store, and his partner ran off with the money. At this point it seems as though all hope is lost for the Youngers, especially Walter, and this is how act II comes to an end.

A few days have gone by and Walter takes control of the family once again. He makes a decision to let Karl Lindner buy the house from them. He wants to buy the house, not for himself, but to keep them out of the white neighborhood. He is also willing to pay them a lot of money to do this. But when Lindner came to the house to talk, the family came together and decided that there wasn't enough money in the world to keep them from letting Mama live out her dream of having something of her own. This

incident brought the Youngers closer together than they've ever been, and it was Walter who brought the family together when he could've ripped it apart again.

I think that for the most part Walter was a very self-centered and greedy person, but once he let the family down, he did everything he could to bring them back together again. Even though Walter screwed up quite often throughout the play, it was these

mistakes that brought the family together and changed everyone's lives for the better. Therefore, it was Walter's less desirable traits that made him a better person in the long run.

It seems to be that throughout time, family live has been revolved around the kitchen. No matter what culture a person is from, that significant space in a household carries on many conversations and events. In Ethan Frome, many startling and revealing matters seemed to have been uncovered when our characters were placed in the kitchen. Every situation placed in this area unearthed Ethan's emotional conditions and his dream life.

No matter the length of time spent in the kitchen, each moment has added to Ethan's state of mind. Since his life began with Zeena, he has felt controlled and withheld from a new world in which he wanted to explore on his own, away from Starkfield. But since his mother's fallen illness, along with Zeena's, Ethan had been incarcerated in his quaint home to live an unwanted life. His wife, with her "complications"(78) as an excuse, controlled Ethan by making him, as well as Mattie, feel "fugitive warnings"() between the two. By doing so, Ethan obeyed Zeena, "and with lowered head he went up in his wife's wake, and followed her across the threshold of their room"(40). As with many marriages, many become dull or end up with either one or both parties unhappy. In this case, Ethan and Zeena were both unsatisfied. In his better days, Ethan was a man of the people. Though he was quite shy, he enjoyed the presence of others. "His mother had been quite a talker in her day"(50). But since her illness and Zeena's nursing, the house in which Ethan enjoyed, turned into a dismal lifetime of routine activities.

With Mattie's presence in Ethan's life, she added warmth to the house, something that had long been forgotten since Zeena's arrival. "When warmth began to radiate from the stove, and the first ray of sunlight lay on the kitchen floor, Ethan's dark thoughts melted in the mellower air"(8). Her youthful humming of "one of the dance tunes of the night before"(4) gave Ethan something to look forward to when returning home for the evening. Because of his joyous encounters with Mattie in the kitchen, fantasies of what life would be like with Mattie aroused. "For the first time they would be alone together indoors, and they would sit there, one on each side of the stove, like a married couple"(50). When arriving home, "Ethan was suffocated with the sense of well-being"(5). Mattie completed Ethan in a way that Zeena never was able to do. This shows that his mind and his heart had been searching for the happiness he had been missing out on. To be deprived of such love could simply shatter a person's state of mind. Ethan had not married Zeena for love, but for the sole reason that he felt "he owed her"(51). When Zeena was ill and wanted to seek further help, Ethan had only questioned her and eventually went along with her desires. However in Mattie's case, when she had broken Zeena's most prized possession, Ethan went out of his way to comfort her and help her in any way possible. Her pain had hurt him as well. He felt "as if every one of her tears were pouring over him like burning lead"(6). And in reverse, her happiness had made him happy also. "Completely reassured, she shone on him through tear hung lashes, and his soul swelled with pride as the saw how his tone subdued her"(6). This added to his fantasies of the perfect love he had always been waiting for. For some reason, Ethan "did not know why he was so irrationally happy, for nothing was changed in his life or hers [Mattie]"(71). With just one evening alone with Mattie, even with mishaps arousing through the night, Ethan still seemed to have enjoyed her company, and was "glad now that he had done nothing to trouble the sweetness of the picture"(71).

Although Ethan may not have had any more feelings towards Zeena, his wife's vulgar remark when Mattie had broken her pickle dish, first insinuates that Zeena might have been actually talking about Ethan and not about the dish. "You're a bad girl, Mattie Silver… I tried to keep my things where you couldn't get at 'em- and now you've took from me the one I cared for most of all"(). This scene symbolically represents how Mattie had taken away Zeena's most loved possession and destroyed all hopes of ever getting it back. So obviously Zeena knew what was going on between her husband and cousin. This is reason enough to hold a grudge against Mattie. Zeena seemed to have no trouble at all being aware at the fact that defenseless Mattie was bringing down her heavy trunk all alone. Zeena wanted Mattie to feel the burden on her shoulders, such a burden that Zeena had experienced with Mattie around. But the anger of letting his love do such a task had "blood rush to his face"(104). Ethan's whole mental state of mind now revolves entirely around Mattie. No matter if his wife was around, or the entire town, Ethan wanted to live his life with Mattie. And so he did.

Buy cheap In the Kitchen with Ethan Frome term paper

Throughout Ethan's life with Zeena and the arrival of Mattie, his hopes and dreams seemed to become more aware to him within the kitchen. Being with Zeena, Ethan progressed into a man, and while with Mattie, he became more childlike. Anyone can look upon each as positive or negative, but all contributed to Ethan's emotions and dreams.

It was the 7th of August; it was a fine sunny Sunday afternoon, perfect weather for a football preliminary final. Athelstone vs. Modbury was the game to be played at 1150am at Prospect Oval. nd place vs. rd place. During the season we played each other twice, it was one all in terms of wins and losses. It was sure to be a good and close game.

The first quarter went as I expected. They knew they were the underdogs so they came out all guns blazing, tackled hard, ran hard and played really well. We still had the lead at quarter time by a couple points. Our team performed rather well considering the pressure was firmly with us as we were always the second best team in the competition; they came above us on percentage. They had a class line up but ours was better. They revolved more around single players where was we had a better team game with of course the quality players who were the icing on the cake.

Second quarter to our surprise saw them again attack hard; once again we went in at the break with a firm 8 point lead. We expected them to drop of the pace as our fitness and skill was at a higher level than theirs but to their credit, they rose to the occasion. We basically expected them to give their all and give up. Our coach gave us the hard word letting us know that we aren't an invincible team and that if we kept going at half pace we were going to lose this game.

The third quarter was a bit of a nothing quarter, the game was really scrappy; it was a low scoring affair. The most significant factor was that they scored two quick goals at the end of the quarter to see them take the lead by a couple of points.

Buy cheap 1 Point term paper

Now all through the match I was at full back, I didn't like that position but I was a strong defender with an accurate kick. I played to my position and my opponent didn't get a goal for those three quarters. It was their 'star' players that were scoring the goals. At three quarter time, the score was 4..6 to 4.0.4, they narrowly had the lead. The coach took me off at three quarter time; I think he blamed me for them taking the lead. He said to me. "Tarcs, mate you've done nothing wrong, just need to strengthen the defence up and rest you for the first half of the quarter so we can attack more. It isn't over yet mate." I remember those words very clearly.

It killed me from the sidelines. They were hammering us. They kicked a goal which saw them extend their lead. Now in a close game like this 8 points was a big lead. We quickly replied, then so did they. It was fair to say that there was no real momentum going, it was goal for goal game.

There would have been no more than 7 to 8 minutes left in the game when out of nowhere one of their lads kicked a freakish goal which saw them go ahead by 10 points. I remember the feeling, it was like a bullet through the stomach, the thought of my team being eliminated killed me. About a minute later one of their lads burst through the middle and let go a torpedo punt which went all the way to the goal line. The lad thought he had scored a miraculous goal but it was touched on the line. I believed that this turned the match around; they thought they had the match in the bag so they eased up as we pushed harder, we ran down and got a goal which saw the margin to 5 points. The lads still thought we were out, it didn't seem like there was enough time to get the winner.

Now was my time. The coach called me up and said to me.

"Tarcs, full forward mate, I want you to run out there and give the boys a stir, tell them we're still in this. Get the fire in the belly Tarcs, now is your chance." I remember that really making the blood rush, goose bumps all over, shivers down my spine. I ran out there and was barking orders at the boys to get pumped. I got to my position and I was on an adrenalin rush, the blood was flowing, the heart pounding, I was fired up.

Our ruckman and rovers got a centre break, the ball was kicked and went to the right half-forward flank where, brilliantly, our centre-half forward knowing, we had a spare man on the ground that could run off tapped it with absolute precision to that man who took the ball and ran towards me.

My opponent ran forward and I noticed that he didn't guard me. He ran forward, so I ran backwards. I was calling for the ball as loud as I ever had. Our lad kicked the ball but to his bad luck it came right off the toe and was heading straight towards my opponent. My opponent, not expecting it, went to mark it but the ball slipped through his hands like he had butter fingers and landed in my hands. I turned quickly and barely looking just snapped it round my body. It was dribbling, dribbling, dribbling goal !

I yelled "YYYYEEEEAAAAHHHHHHH!" As loudly as I ever had yelled before. It felt like the whole team came to me and was patting me. The team was pumped; the crowd was accelerating the boys.

There would have been 0 seconds left but it felt like an eternity. The opposition ran the ball down to their forward line before one of our defenders got a quick kick away and then… SIREN. I was ecstatic, I ran straight down the middle to the boys who were all huddling and patting each other. We had won by a point. It was one of the best games I was ever involved in and I kicked the goal, I have never experienced a euphoric, exciting moment in my life like that. It was a 1 point victory.

African American Thought in the Late 1th Century

In the late 1th century, there were two men with different points of views on how to improve the status of African Americans. These two men were W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington. They were two great leaders of the black community, but disagreed on strategies for black social and economic progress. With their different backgrounds and points of views, they should have worked together to improve African American status in the late 1th century. Their tactics alone could not have worked well. There would have been a problem or disagreement, because not all of the African Americans thought the same way they did. This essay will compare and contrast the different ideas of W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington, and explain why their combined ideas would have been a better approach.

Booker T. Washington was born a slave in Virginia, but later moved to West Virginia after emancipation. He studied at the Hampton Institute and taught an upgraded school and experimented briefly with the study of law and the ministry. In 1881, he founded the Tuskegee Normal and the Industrial Institute on the Hampton model. The school taught the students in academic subjects, but focused in areas of carpentry, masonry, agriculture, cooking, and other basic skills. Washington's achievements made him an influential leader. He even dined with President Roosevelt and met with him regularly to discuss racial issues.

Washington encouraged African Americans to make friends in any manner they can with other races around them, mainly the Americans. He believed that by doing this, African Americans could be accepted as equals and earn the trust of White men. He compared this method to the casting of a bucket in the middle of the ocean. He recommended that most African Americans should learn to dignify and justify common labor, and put brains and skill into the common occupations of life. He believed that they should start at the bottom of life, and not at the top. Washington thought that African Americans should assume their political rights slowly and naturally. He did believe that they should be able to vote though. He thought that it would help them practice self-governing and influence them by those of intelligence and of character.

Even with great ideas and plans, Washington found himself confronted by many opposing African Americans, one of which was W.E.B. Du Bois. He indeed admired Washington, but strongly disagreed with his tactics. Du Bois graduated from Fisk University and received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 185. From 187 to 110 he taught at Atlanta University, where here he devoted himself to sociological investigations of the condition of African Americans. He argued that the only appropriate way to deal with disfranchisement was to demand equality and to fight for it. In 105, he founded the Niagara Movement, which in 10 merged with the new National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Du Bois believed that African Americans, like all races, would be saved by men. He discovered that it would be a problem to educate them because of the Talented Tenth. It was the problem of developing the best of his race to guide everyone else away from the worst of his race and of other races. He recommended that they would be college-bred, much like a group leader who will set the ideals of the community, direct its thoughts, and heads the social movements. He compared these characteristics to those of a preacher. According to Du Bois, there was a danger in training African Americans in technical skills. He believed that they would only produce artisans, but not men.

Both Washington and Du Bois had dreams and visions, motivating them to set a higher standard for African Americans to improve their status in America. Washington's views was like a "melting pot." He wanted all races to become friends and progress slowly, not forcing anything. He wanted unity among the races, instead of living individually amongst each other. He probably received much negative critism about unifying with those of different races and color. For example, Du Bois did not want to take things slowly. He wanted progression as soon as he could get it. He wanted to train others in skills, while receiving education in manhood. He wanted to prove his race worthy to live as equals with the Americans. Many other probably disagreed with him, complaining about how it would be impossible to progress and become equals to Americans in such a short amount of time. This is why it would be best for Washington and Du Bois to work together. Their arguments alone are not sufficient. The people who oppose Washington are those who support Du Bois, and those who oppose Du Bois are those who support Washington. To avoid opposition, they should become a team to contribute both of their ideas to make an agreement of how to approve African American status in a way that will work on both sides.
