It was the 7th of August; it was a fine sunny Sunday afternoon, perfect weather for a football preliminary final. Athelstone vs. Modbury was the game to be played at 1150am at Prospect Oval. nd place vs. rd place. During the season we played each other twice, it was one all in terms of wins and losses. It was sure to be a good and close game.
The first quarter went as I expected. They knew they were the underdogs so they came out all guns blazing, tackled hard, ran hard and played really well. We still had the lead at quarter time by a couple points. Our team performed rather well considering the pressure was firmly with us as we were always the second best team in the competition; they came above us on percentage. They had a class line up but ours was better. They revolved more around single players where was we had a better team game with of course the quality players who were the icing on the cake.
Second quarter to our surprise saw them again attack hard; once again we went in at the break with a firm 8 point lead. We expected them to drop of the pace as our fitness and skill was at a higher level than theirs but to their credit, they rose to the occasion. We basically expected them to give their all and give up. Our coach gave us the hard word letting us know that we aren't an invincible team and that if we kept going at half pace we were going to lose this game.
The third quarter was a bit of a nothing quarter, the game was really scrappy; it was a low scoring affair. The most significant factor was that they scored two quick goals at the end of the quarter to see them take the lead by a couple of points.

Now was my time. The coach called me up and said to me.
"Tarcs, full forward mate, I want you to run out there and give the boys a stir, tell them we're still in this. Get the fire in the belly Tarcs, now is your chance." I remember that really making the blood rush, goose bumps all over, shivers down my spine. I ran out there and was barking orders at the boys to get pumped. I got to my position and I was on an adrenalin rush, the blood was flowing, the heart pounding, I was fired up.
Our ruckman and rovers got a centre break, the ball was kicked and went to the right half-forward flank where, brilliantly, our centre-half forward knowing, we had a spare man on the ground that could run off tapped it with absolute precision to that man who took the ball and ran towards me.
My opponent ran forward and I noticed that he didn't guard me. He ran forward, so I ran backwards. I was calling for the ball as loud as I ever had. Our lad kicked the ball but to his bad luck it came right off the toe and was heading straight towards my opponent. My opponent, not expecting it, went to mark it but the ball slipped through his hands like he had butter fingers and landed in my hands. I yelled "YYYYEEEEAAAAHHHHHHH!" As loudly as I ever had yelled before. It felt like the whole team came to me and was patting me. The team was pumped; the crowd was accelerating the boys.
