There is much a person desires in a vehicle, one; does it have power windows, Power locks, power seats, two; does it have a high horse power engine, or does it have a low geared engine, three; does it have nice interior, and can it hold the entire family, but most of all, four, is the price reasonable, or can I afford it. These are just a few things a person does when shopping for a new vehicle, but in this whole process are they missing the picture. Why do they have such nice vehicles to choose from, how do they get the money to be able to afford these vehicles, and how almost whoever you are can have a vehicle? I have been observing people and found out that vehicles make people lazy, but without them they would they would not be able to make a living ninety percent of the time. So when you put all of these facts in an Anthropological mind, it all makes since, why vehicles mean so much in our lives.

First lets talk about how people take vehicles for granted, I went to a car dealership with my mother, because she wanted to buy a new SUV the first one we looked at was a beautiful Lexus, it was one year old, with twenty eight thousand miles on it; with leather interior, power windows and locks, with a V6 engine. She did not like the car for a couple of reasons; one it was expensive, and two it did not have a power full enough engine. The next one we looked at was a new BMW SUV, it had all of the same features, but a more power full engine, at around the same price, and that was the one she was considering to buy. Do you think in the search for a new car she ever thought that 15 years ago you couldn't get power windows, or leather seats, or a power full engine that still got 5 miles to the gallon? No but that doesn't make it her fault, because 15 years ago she didn't want those things, so that just goes to show you that people change with the times, and as things get better, people start wanting the better things.

Even though the vehicle is a big part of our lives, it also effects our lives and health in a bad way for example, if you needed some bread and milk and the store was a mile away, would we walk/run there or would we just get in the car and drive to the store, of course we would take option number two. But that is not the only thing vehicles strip us of, think about how much more land we would have on the planet if we did not have the vehicle; therefore on the flipside of that what if we did not get our ready supply of food, drink, equipment, supplies, etc. Another thing a vehicle does for us is commute us to work, or school, and everything in between, because in today's society nobody works on a farm at home living off the land and killing there livestock for food, but can we blame the loss of that life style on the vehicle. Another thing would we be able to see the world without the vehicle, would vacation spots be here without the vehicle, I think not because if you own Walt Disney World, your only crowed will be within a fifty mile radius at the most. So the real question is does the vehicle help us or hurt us, we will never decide for sure.

I'm sure not much of this is making a lot of since, but if you put it in an Anthropological view it would all fall in to place. Let take the four agents of change and apply them to the vehicle. Starting with innovation, what is the primary innovation of the car? I would say the wheel, and then what is the Secondary innovation of the vehicle? I would say the first wheel able to move without assistance, In the process of innovation it talks about how most innovations start simple; then grow bigger, and then grow bigger, and then they start making inventions for the inventions, is that not the way a vehicle came about? I think it is. Now lets apply the vehicle to diffusion, did we make the first wheel, no, but we inherited it, did we make the first car, no but we inherited that also, did we make all the modern conveniences for the vehicle, no, but we borrowed other cultures inventions and used them to make our inventions better, thus relating to Diffusion. Now lets talk about our cultural losses, what did we lose as a society to the car, we already talked about a couple; for example loss of land, and loss of exercise, but there are more, what about loss of lives due to car crashes, we lose thousands of people a year due to car crashes. What about our past means of transportation; how many people do you see ride there horse to work, and how many people have a buggy in there driveway, none. Now we are the last one Acculturation, how did people deal with coming to the states and seeing that everyone was driving a car, I'm sure it was a big change if they have never seen it done before, but as human beings we have a certain way for dealing with such cultural changes, we call it adaptability, and with this over time we can go to any culture and adapt to it.

In conclusion the vehicle is probably on of the biggest innovations in the past one hundred years. It has changed so much of our culture and did it right under our noses, without most of us even knowing what hit us. This has happened a lot in the last few years, we have created things, and have had to adapt to the creation, every thing we create is to try to make our life easier, and more comfortable, but no matter what we do every thing we invent, and everything we change, adds new stresses to our lives, and the only way we can understand how it is today is threw the study of Anthropology. So when it comes to the question, do we really need cars and if not would life be easier without them, my answer to that is we have little control of how we live, because it is human nature never to be satisfied.
