A buyer and a seller agree on price and exchange a commodity. Then, if the seller is working for the government, the buyer is thrown in jail and convicted to serve, say, 10 years with a $10,000 fine; if the buyer is working for the government, the seller is convicted. The government bargains with the convict for his life, liberty, property, and pursuit of happiness, if he will incriminate himself or any other buyers and sellers he knows. The government, with judicial stamp of approval, then spies on these other persons or breaks into their homes. It can use electronic eavesdropping, secret agents, search and seizure of person or property, bribe witnesses, set up a false business in the commodity, or examine all information (especially records of financial transaction) public or private about these persons. Finally, if the government gains any evidence, after thoroughly penetrating their privacy, that one of these persons (or anyone else they run across) ever possessed the commodity, used the commodity, handled money exchanged for the commodity, committed any action involving the commodity, they can convict that person to spend years in jail, pay fines of thousands of dollars, seize his property and business...and, of course, seize and destroy the commodity.

The Punch Line The commodity is a particular psychoactive chemical identified in legislation.

Most Americans will accept that punch line as sufficient explanation for the actions of their government. To the rest of us, who have not had our day in the media, the punch line is at best ironical humor. It speaks to us of outrageous injustice, official deceit, and ignorant apathy...of fundamentally false dogma. The prevailing party line in America has indoctrinated our society in an extensive mythology about DRUGS. Drugs are immoral and destroy the spirit...Drugs are harmful to our children and to the fabric of society...Drugs are responsible for organized crime, theft, and violence. Most Americans take smug comfort from what they are offered by the mass media. They see that only the poor, minorities, mobsters, or a few token entertainers are caught by the police. They hear every so often that new scientific evidence proves illegal drugs dangerousness. They are given stories of incredible depravity, horrendous corruption, and lives destroyed all because of drugs. They easily acquiesce to public officials or editorialists who express the unassailably righteous condemnation of drugs. All this with cigarette or beer in hand...

Most of the prevalent attitudes about drugs range from poor perspectives to misrepresentations, contradictions, or simply falsehoods. One common perspective treats illegal drugs as a distinct class of evil, harmful substances. This attitude, for instance, is expressed when a comic strip about a shiftless alcohol addict (Andy Capp) is humorous and popular, while a hypothetical equivalent strip about a heroin addict would bring howls of outrage and condemnation for corrupting young minds. This even in spite of the fact that being a heroin addict does not necessarily ruin lives, cripple the addict, increase crime and violence like alcohol addiction does - exactly contrary to the establishments representation. A more profound understanding of the drug problem, and consequently better policy concerning it, follows from realizing that attitudes toward drugs fundamentally contradict other attitudes. A most important contradiction is that drug laws violate the most basic beliefs in individual rational autonomy - freedom to choose for oneself how one behaves and what one does with his own body. Ultimately, the drug problem does not concern only a few illicit drug takers. Every American who pays taxes for the requisite police state, who knows someone harmed by drinking or smoking, who cares about his freedom to behave as he chooses will be affected by the current policy. After a review of the major arguments and evidence, the drug problem will appear to be aggravated and usually caused by drug criminalization. The repercussions of the current policy and social attitudes lead quickly to authoritarianism.

On September 11, a horrible tragedy stroked America. It was when two hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Towers, which lead them to collapse into gravel and dust. Now that President Bush knows what happen, he is now waging war with Iraq. What will happen if decided on going to war? Will citizens still have rights/freedom or will they pt restrictions on them? If the war was to happen and they would put restrictions on our rights/freedom it would be wrong. I feel that they should not put restrictions on them because this is what citizens of America strived for, which is known as the Bill of Rights.

Even though civil liberties should not be restricted, it?s happening right before my eyes. Just the other day 100 people from Albany, New York got arrested. They got arrested for protesting of a man?s arrest for wearing a peace T-shirt while shopping in a Crossgates Mall. Sixty-one year ago Stephen Downs was arrested and charged with trespassing in the mall after he refused to take it off. Who were the people who arrested him? I mean were they not ?America?? I thought this was the land of the ?free,? and we got to wear what we wanted to wear. They shouldn?t get put out public places because of what is on their shirt. By during this kind of act they are or breaking the 1st amendment, which states that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. Therefore you shouldn?t get put for what you are wearing but for acts of badness.

Since September 11, we are losing our liberties. On November 6th, 001 in USA Today, I found out that the Justice Department approved eavesdropping on conversations between defense lawyers and clients in the terrorism probe. This act violates the 4th amendment. The 4th amendment states The Fourth Amendment prohibits the police and other government officials from searching people?s homes or offices or seizing their property without reasonable grounds to believe that a crime has been committed. In most cases, police can conduct a search of a person?s home or office only after they get a written search warrant from a judge, detailing where they will search and what they expect to find.

President Bush has decided that terrorism suspects can be tried before special military council. Based on this decision, as many as 1000 foreigner was gather search that they can find the attackers. As we look back at the amendments this points out the 5th amendment, which is states that no person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

Write my Essay on The Restrictions on Civil Liberties are unjustified?

In conclusion, we are very concerned about the spread of terrorism, but we have to ask ourselves what is the balance. ?How do you do that and ensure that we dont trample on the constitutional rights that we have fought to protect for over 00 years?(Sen. Tom Daschle) If restrictions was place don our liberties, How would I?ll life be if civil liberties were restricted? In my opinion it wouldn?t be worthless.

Animal Farm Response 1

The novella Animal Farm is written by George Orwell, a survivor of the Russian Revolution. In the preface, he told about the hardships of finding a company who would publish a book that at the time could be considered as heresy. Although it is not stated, it can be concluded that the animals were based on real life people due to the similar personalities, thoughts, and actions.

The story takes place on Manor Farm, owned by the farmer, Mr. Jones, and his wife. Animal Farm begins with Old Major, a majestic old pig, holding a meeting to tell the farm animals about a strange dream he had the night before. In his speech, Old Major taught the animals on the farm Animalism, where all animals were equal and all got their fair share.

After his death, meetings were held about when the revolution would take place. The revolution took place when they revolted after being starved an entire day. When the animals broke into the food storage room, they were punished harshly. Having suffered enough, the animals rebelled and ran the men off the farm.

Cheap Custom Essays on Animal Farm Response 1

The animals then took over the farm and began to start a new life. Two pigs, Napoleon and Snowball, became the leaders of the farm, renamed Animal Farm. The pigs, who had learned in secret, then taught the other animals how to read and write. They then came up with the Seven Commandments, which was written on one of the walls in the barn. They toiled and labored to bring in the harvest and things began to prosper. The two female dogs had nine puppies, which were then put in Napoleon's care to "be educated." Never seen, they were soon forgotten.

As the song, Beasts of England began to spread; Mr. Jones and a handful tried to gain the farm back but failed. Meetings were held to decide the farm policy but Napoleon and Snowball could never agree on a subject. As Snowball devised a plan to build a windmill to make life for the animals easier, Napoleon publicly went against the idea.

When Snowball announced the finished plans, the nine dogs that had "mysteriously" vanished appeared to drive Snowball of the farm. Napoleon then took control of the farm as the dogs enforced the rules. The animals worked hard on the harvest and the windmill when Napoleon decided to continue with the plans he stole from Snowball.

Mr. Whymper was the go-between for Animal Farm and the outside world. Later the pigs took over the farmhouse and were treated better than the rest of the farm animals. When one of the horses, Clover, asked the goat to read the seven commandments, extra words were added to make it seem appropriate. That winter the windmill project was put on hold as a tree felled by a windy storm destroyed what they had built so far. Napoleon put all the blame on Snowball, accusing him of destroying their windmill because of he wanted revenge for his exile.

I predict in the future that Mr. Jones will have more help because they want to get the farm back and stop the ideas of Animalism. The animals will probably build the windmill again, with thicker walls to withstand winter storms. They'll probably devote all their time in the windmill and not spend enough time harvesting for the winter ahead. Therefore, the animals will suffer a food shortage. I also predict that Muriel, the goat, is helping the pigs by eliminating questions or doubts not unlike the way Squealer promotes better treatment for pigs. In the future, the animals will probably finish the windmill but the humans will destroy it to try and show them that they haven't won just yet. I also think that Mr. Whymper will trick the animals into believing that he's on their side, while relaying information to the neighboring farms. Later, I think that Napoleon becomes obsessed with power and allies himself with the humans as he lives on in comfort. Then when the farmers are sure that the pigs had total control over Animal Farm, they'll probably get together and attack, gaining back control.

Our most current global issue consists of several interlinked issues. They are, What is supposed to be "international terrorism without any cause and in response, its policies with the use of military power that is being pursued as "state policy." Although our society has recognized war as only a global issue, the past wars have proved that a war can only be based on factors such as political scandals and policies of a nation itself. It is unfortunate that the military, industrial, and the economy of United States is being used by certain vested interest groups who own and operate all the centers of power in the United States in furtherance of "their own group agenda." On the other hand, masses of Americans are deliberately kept ignorant about the real issues involved. These issues are not at all in the interest of the United States nor the rest of the world. Yet they are mis-represented as such which would be very dangerous for United States and the whole world in not a very distant future. America has been founded on the high principles of "liberty, equality, justice, and equal rights for all." Respective of his or her "caste, creed, color, race, or religion." But, when wars become state-policies, all such high principles are buried for all the nations on any side of the divide. We must keep in mind that for America, working on it's high moral principles on which it was founded to be essential if it wants to continue it's lead in all matters that mankind value and need most. If we slide into anarchist policies, that very disease will destroy all, including Americans. We the Americans need to be careful to see that no group is allowed to use our resources, our boys and their blood, and let me also say not allow them to misuse our ignorance of world affairs, to the advantage of their exclusive group interest, which is the road to doom for all. We, as a nation, are founded on high morals and principles. We must be trained to listen to all sides of every story and make our own fair judgement so that we prove equal to the confidence of our founding fathers in us that "this nation will stand for freedom and equal rights for all the peoples." We have earned high reputation and thankfulness of other nations all over the globe; we have always helped and cooperated with others to remedy their problems. These nations respect us as a great nation because we have high moral doing good deeds for the less fortunate nations of the world. We should allow this or that nation to use us as their war-machine. Let us regain our high name, fame, and position which was earned over centuries by continuing to work on our old benevolent agenda and not on the formula of wars as a cure for all our problems. We have given great sacrifices to free ourselves from our colonial status under the British. We should honestly look at the grievances of all nations and should help remove these injustices. We should not favor any nation, but try to help them all so that injustice and miseries in the world can come to an end. We have fought great wars to establish rule of justice and fair-play in the world, and for these purposes we have given great sacrifices of American lives. Now we should NOT work against what we have sacrificed so much for. The only way to pay our debt of gratitude to the martyrs of America would be the work for "peace with justice for all nations without any prejudice." These are my suggestions and I think we should all team up and not only portray an image of doing this but sincerely do this because it is in the favor of all of us and it would help our county as a whole. Although our society has recognized war as a global issue, the past wars have proved that a war can only be based on factors such as political scandals and policies of a nation itself. These are my believes and I think we should follow them as soon as possible.

Perception is the basis of on which we form our thoughts. Through the senses, our surroundings are perceived by many different ways. Many of our perceptions of certain instances are inferred on assumptions of past events that have taken place in our lives. According to Elder, "…we continually make assumptions about ourselves, our jobs, our mates, our students, our children, the world in general"(Critical, para 5, 00). This is obvious in most of our daily lives. These subjective evaluations can sometimes be in the way of thinking objectively about situations that need to be resolved. Because most humans do not know everything, assumptions are an essential part of most productive employees. In many fields, from history to engineering, assumptions are an integral part of most people's thought processes. The emotive aspect of critical thinking lies with the inquisitive state of being. If you are emotionally keyed to think scrupulously about situations, the likelihood of inferring the best solutions is bound to happen.

The language used to evaluate critical thinking is sometimes skewed. Often times people view assuming and inferring as synonymous. The contrast is notable, however. Inferring is based on prior experiences. It is part of cultural beliefs. These subjective thinking styles viewed through sociological lenses are based on assumptions. Assumptions are something we take for granted or presuppose"(Critical, para 7, 00). They are never questioned. Assumptions can be either justified or not, depending on circumstances.

The logical flow of critical thinking is a process containing many elements. A systematic list must be created to analyze each detail of a problem. But before the problem is defined, the parts of thinking must be evaluated. The purpose of solving the problem is the first question. Determining the purpose will give direction and insight to possible alternatives and evaluation. Next, question the problem. Determining the questions that will make you more informed to solving a problem, and so be able to solve it, will be valuable. After the questions are formulated, information on the problem must be gathered. The more information you have on a given problem, the more likely you will be able to find a logical conclusion. After the information is gathered, eliminating irrelevant facts will streamline the process. Also, when dealing with different departments in an organization it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the particular jargon used. Inferences can be made based on technical information and assumptions from past experiences. The point of view taken while analyzing anything will mostly be caught in the balance of some variable such as cost or time.

Critical thinking can be a useful tool for creating solutions to difficult problems. If used correctly a more descriptive path will be made apparent. Critical thinking is an essential part of maintaining companies in today's society.

A boat under a rose

Subconscious Interlude is a painting by Joseph Cusimano. Every person can decode different meanings from a painting. A concealed message is a message that can be seen behind a painting. This message can be interpreted as a happy moment preceding a sad one. Greek people say that a bad thing has something good hidden in it. Even though people can not see this optimistic side directly, life brings it to light as a consequence of endless tears and misery. After facing the problems and the bad moments, man can stand up again on his feet and perceive ideas that he couldn't have done before.

The material of this painting is acrylic on canvas and it was painted in 16. Its is a simple but at the same time a wonderful painting. Its shape is rectangular. Its opposite sides have the same length but the four of them are not equal. The perpendicular sides are longer than the horizontal ones.

The first time that catches your eye is a bog squared frame which captures the three fourths of the whole painting. All the sides of the frame have the same length. The color of the main frame is dark brown. The frame is three-dimensional towards the inside. The top side and the left one of the three-dimensional surface towards the inside have a lighter color, common to dark yellow mixed with light brown and highlights of orange. But the color of the other side is bright yellow. There are shades that separate the two colors and distinguish them from each other. That fact discloses that there is a hidden source of light coming from the upper left of the painting. The warm rays can touch and stroke soft the body skin.

In the frame there is a lonely rose; it seems like a sad queen. If somebody could smell its perfume, a special scent will activate every single nerve in his or her nasal area. The rose is huge; its color is passionate red and the flower has a melancholic look. Its breath is fast and it is crying. Its petals are closed and it seems like it wants to protect itself from something. Somebody could tell that the rose is bleeding inside and its internal feelings are pessimistic. Its strain is small as if somebody tried to root out its heart. It has two leaves and there don't seem to be any thorns. The strain and the leaves have a green color. This rose seems to be harmless and wounded.

Underneath this frame there is a sea which is calm. At the right and at the left side of the painting, dry land appears suddenly in view. Those pieces of mainland consist of iced blue and contours of beige and grey. The air is blowing. It is full of spring and blossoming scents. The sea water is still cold. In the middle of the sea, a boat is sailing. Its color is brown to black. It doesn't seem to have any worries or concerns about anything. Its sails color is yellow and they have little stripes of orange; its image is reflected into the sea. The sails are not inflated. That means that there is no wind and the boat is not in a hurry. It just lets the air sweep it away onto a happy trip.

The background of the painting has a successful exchanging of colors and shadings. At first it begins with a sky-blue tone and the color becomes progressively lighter until it ends above the horizontal line as a pale white. The sea also has different colors and shadings. Below the color is blue mixed with light green highlights and white highlights which probably want to show the foam of the sea. Gradually the color becomes lighter until it reaches the horizontal line as a light sky blue

Old wise Chinese people used to say that a painting equals with a thousand of words. Thousand of words can describe Subconscious Interlude. It is a journey of the mind and the soul through scent, sound, taste, touch, vision. Through the exhalations of the internal world different, new and important ways of facing things are coming up.
