The definition of the term 'archetypal hero' is a tricky one , due to the fact that, like the concept of good and evil, it is all a matter of opinion. What is highly valued by one person could be considered trash by another. To critique for a wider audience, only the most basic, crucial criteria should be used. There are three essential requirements that a character must fulfill to earn the title of hero skill, appeal, and victory.

To satisfy the requirement of skill, the character in question must possess uncommon abilities. These present themselves in three forms physical ability, mental prowess, and courage. Of the novels Anthem, The Odyssey, and Angela's Ashes, Odysseus, the hero of The Odyssey, is the only one that shows exceptional physical ability, even though it is one of the most common characteristics of heroes. The skill of Equality, the hero of Anthem, resides mainly in the field of mental prowess, shown by his great analytical and philosophical abilities. Odysseus also exhibits great mental capacity, a characteristic even more valuable than its physical counterpart. In Angela's Ashes, Frank displays the third and final option for qualification in the category of skill courage. His life was nothing short of abysmal, but he managed to survive itwithout killing himself, thereby appearing brave in the eyes of the reader, because he did something no one else could or would. For this requirement, it does not matter whether the brave action is voluntary.

The criterion of appeal dictates that the reader must favor the hero. If the reader hates the character in question, that character must be the villain, and therefore cannot be the hero. In The Odyssey, Odysseus' favor is won through the praise of other characters in the book. Several characters constantly go on about strong Odysseus, wise Odysseus, brave Odysseus. Equality is liked because of his independence. He appeals to the average reader's sympathy for the underdog, the one that has no hope of winning, but keeps on fighting anyway. If he actually had a decent chance of winning, he wouldn't be anything special. Frank's reason for popularity is his decrepit situation. He is poor, malnourished, uneducated, and has only ever seen the worst of life. For all this, Frank's audience pities him, and no one can truly dislike someone he or she pities.

By far, the most important requirement for the title of hero is victory. The hero always wins. If the hero does not win, then he or she is just another person trampled underfoot by his or her enemy. Such characters are forgotten within seconds, and most definitely do not fit the role of hero. The two ways a character can win are in the literal sense, and in a metaphoric sense. The literal sense is most clearly shown in The Odyssey, when Odysseus and his allies brutally slaughter their enemies. They had foes, and physically beat them. All the characters actions represent some concept or idea, and the character's victory is one in which the persona changes, rather than the physical situation. A good example of this concept is Equality's victory over his society. While he did physically escape from its clutches, the true battle was for his mind. When he renounced its ideology and declared independence, he won his intellectual freedom in a clear-cut victory. Frank's victory is a little of both senses, in that he managed to make his way to America, thereby achieving his goal, but also succeeded in completing his journey into manhood.

As aforementioned, a hero must be unique, well liked, and, above all, must win. This applies to all heroes in all stories, and is clearly shown in these three books. Critics may say that there are other qualities that make a hero, and that may be true, but the core, the very essence of a hero boils down to those three criteria. Without them, there can be no hero.
