Leadership in Organizations

Leadership is something I feel is essential in all organizations for them to succeed. I read an article titled Leadership styles, from Elvis to Rosa Parks. This article basically defined what leadership meant, and how it should be used in the workforce. This article touched on two major points of leadership, embracing a vision, and turning a vision into reality.

The first point I will talk about it embracing a vision. The writer of this article felt that to be a good leader one thing you must do is get people to embrace a vision or a goal that you have, as there own vision or goal. To do this you have to have full support and trust from your employees. This may sound like an easy task but in some cases it can be very difficult. For example, I work at a pet store and the managers wanted to start doing school field trips. None of the employees were very enthused about the whole idea, because it meant more work for us. But, the Managers kept enforcing the fact that it would bring more business to the store, which in turn meant more sales for each employee. The managers then put the employees in charge of scheduling and organizing the school events. The managers left all the decision making up to the employees, which gave us a chance to do what we wanted. Because, the managers left all the decisions up to us, it almost felt like we came up with the idea ourselves. So you can see, although we didn't come up with the idea in the first place, the managers helped us to embrace it as our own. This idea I feel can be used in any organization. From my personal experiences I am definitely more willing to do something that I feel is partially my idea, rather that something I don't feel any connection to.

The second point the writer of this article talked about was turning that vision into reality. I touched on this in the previous paragraph, but I will elaborate a little bit more.

After you have the employees to feel that the idea is there's, as a good leader, you must inspire them to proceed with the idea and make it happen. To turn the vision into reality is easier than the first point the article made. Once you feel that you have helped the making of the vision or idea, you are likely to help achieve it. Continuing with the example mentioned previously, once we all accepted the idea as our own we worked very hard to get it done. We now all work together to schedule class activities for all different types of schools. We cater our discussions to what the teacher wants us to do. We all really have fun with it. You would never have guessed that noone wanted to do it at first. Another good example of this is one David Brewer, the writer of the article I read, made. He gave the example of John Kennedy's idea of taking a man to the moon. Many people thought it was unthinkable but because of his leadership, he persuaded other to believe in the idea also. A decade later a man walked on the moon.

So as you can see, a manager being a good leader is almost essential for getting quality work out of your employees, and to be able to achieve the unthinkable. So if someone is looking to become a manager or want to be looked at as a leader, they will try there hardest to achieve the goals set by managers no matter what. I read another article that gave a few good example of what people look for in a leader. About 85% stated that performance was the most important trait for a leader. Others felt that adaptability to different situations made a good leader, and other thought flexibility, and persistence made a good leader.

Whatever makes a good leader, it is just important for a manager to possess good leadership skills. Most people follow by example, so if a manager is a leader and does his work how he wants his employees work to be done, the employees will probably work harder.

In conclusion, according the David Brewer the writer of my article, Leadership is two things. One, someone who possesses leadership should be able to get employee to embrace a vision or goal as there own. Two the manager should then be able to be a good leader by motivating his employees to achieve the vision or goal. By possessing these two qualities David Feels that this makes a good leader.

If I Should Die Before I Wake by Han Nolan

The two main characters in my book were Hilary and Chana. Hilary is a girl who lives in our time. But Chana is a girl who lives in the times during the holocaust. Hilary is sixteen, has blonde hair and blue eyes. She is apart of a neo- Nazi gang in her town and hates all Jewish people. Chana is a Jewish girl during the holocaust, but the book does not describe her appearance. She is about thirteen in the beginning of the book but by the end of the book is nineteen. Hilary is very depressed with her life. She hates almost everything and everyone who is not in her Nazi gang. She became depressed and mean after her father died when his office building burnt down. Hilary was about five years old when her father died. Hilary thinks that his building burnt down because the boss of her father [which is Jewish] was too cheap to hire better security. Hilary is stuck to live with her mother who she does not get along with. As Hilary gets older she meets her boyfriend Brad. Brad gets her into the neo- Nazi gang, where they do chants to Hitler and hurt Jewish teenagers. One night Hilary and Brad go out on Brad's motorcycle. They get in an accident in another town and Hilary gets sent to the hospital. When she is the hospital she has these dreams of a Jewish girl during the holocaust. The girl is Chana and Hilary is very confused with the dreams and does not know what they mean. Chana is a girl who's father died because Nazi soldiers killed him. After his death Chana and her family are taken from their home and sent to a ghetto for Jewish people by the German Army. There she lives in a one-bedroom apartment with eight other people. Her and her family are constantly hungry because there is so little to eat. Hilary dreams about Chana and her family everyday. When Hilary wakes up she begins to stop hating Jewish people. Hilary and Chana both grow a lot during the story. Hilary starts to have less hate in her life and Chana grows into a courageous person with enough strength to handle Auschwitz concentration camp.

The setting of the story in the beginning of the book is in the town that Hilary lives in. There she meets her boyfriend who brings her into the Nazi gang. The entire book jumps constantly from when Hilary wakes up in the hospital to when she goes back to sleep and Chana is in Auschwitz concentration camp. The book does end with Hilary being in the hospital.

This book was an emotional roller coaster. Where one minute a girl is sick in the hospital and the next another girl is working constantly in a concentration camp where she hardly gets any food and when she does it is a soup that has insects, socks, underwear and many other horrible things floating in it. When Chana first goes to Auschwitz she has to take a shower nude with hundreds of other women. Then they shave her head and give her clothes that are much to big for her and don't keep her warm. There Chana works for two years which is a very difficult thing because most people who went there did not survive a week. After a little more then two years of being there Chana faints because she is so hungry. The climax of the story is when she wakes up from fainting and she is in the hospital with her grandmother and is confused. The resolution of the story is when you realize she fainted on the day the Germans lost the war and is set free with her grandmother to go back home. Hilary during all of this is growing as a loving person and learning not to be as hateful. Hilary understands how awful it was to hurt so many people just because they were Jewish and breaks up with her boyfriend.

Privilege

America is one of the most socio-economically diverse populations in the world, often pairing the richest classes with the poorest in the same community. As a teacher-to-be, it is my duty to treat all students equally, therefore I need to be able to look inside myself and figure out if there are any prejudices I might have that I might not even be aware of. I would like to consider myself as a very open person, but I know that I need to constantly be recognizing, and re-evaluating any stereotypes, I could have. In order to do this, I had to think hard to remember my past, and what shaped my view on the issue of social status.

I grew up in an upper-middle class suburban town called Los Altos. However, I went to a public school with kids from upper and lower socio-economic levels because kids from the town next to Los Altos were from lower income families, and were both in the same district. I remember how all of the kids would compare lunches at school, and trade food with each other. There were two types of lunches lunch A. consisted of a deli sandwich with all the fixings, yogurt, a bag of un-crumbled crackers, an apple (sliced thinly), and two cookies, and a juice box. Lunch B. consisted of a cheese sandwich, a bag of tortilla chips, a candy bar, and a soda or squeeze it. The only prejudice I can vividly remember having when I was a kid was that the kids with the A. lunches were somehow better taken care of, than the kids with the B. lunches.

I can also remember vividly a time when I felt I was discriminated upon by my skin color. I was in kindergarten, and we were putting on a show with the Mexican Hat Dance as one of the numbers. There was a solo part available for the girl who did the dance the best, and the way the teacher chose the "best dancer" was by having an audition. I really wanted to be the solo dancer in the Mexican Hat Dance because I had danced since I was three, and I remember thinking that I was the best dancer in my kindergarten class. I remember that there was only one Hispanic girl in the class at that time. The other ten girls in the class were Asian and Caucasian. The next day the teacher announced that the soloist was the Hispanic girl. I was frustrated because I really wanted that part, and I can remember feeling like my teacher chose her over me because she was Mexican and I was not. Maybe she really was chosen because she looked Mexican, or maybe my teacher just thought that she was a better dancer than me, either way, it makes me realize that even at a young age I was aware of the possibility that discrimination could have occurred.

Despite our differences, we all got over the visual barriers and became friends. I had a culturally diverse group of friends. I remember how we all pretty much ignored the fact that our skin colors, and facial features were different. Instead, we focused on our commonalities. This seemed to work fine, until we got into Junior High, and our priorities changed. We all wanted to fit in and we all seemed to have different ideas of was and was not "cool". There seemed to be no middle ground anymore. If you were a certain race, the chances were you hung out with mostly people from your race. I actually can remember making a conscious effort to be friends with everybody in my classes, but for the most part, my close friends were now Caucasian. I remember feeling confused and frustrated by the newly formed racial groups. Ever since then, I have been frustrated with the concept of privilege as a whole.

I would consider myself to be privileged because of my parents' success. Although I recognize the fact that I am lucky to have been born into this lifestyle, however, I decided to put my privileges to use in order to help the underprivileged. That is why I decided that I wanted to be a teacher. I am willing to take risks for what I believe in, and I believe that it is imperative for all children to recognize that they are special and unique. My plan is to individualize each child based on all of the components that make them who they are, by emphasizing a more direct interaction with my students. I hope that I will be able to make a difference, so someday everybody will have equal opportunities.

Hills like White Elephants a story written by Hemingway, indirectly tells us

about unwanted pregnancy". Throughout the story, Hemingway does not convey the main idea. He conveys it in the introduction;" In which the unspoken subject is the abortion(164). Nevertheless, if we consider the symbolism of Jigs statement that hills resemble white elephants (165), we might be able to make a more definitive case that this in fact is a story about unwanted pregnancy. The Story is also a third person narrative. We never find out how either one of the character feels; we only find out what they feel after reading what they say to each other. The Story also speaks of a conflict that remains unresolved till the end.

The story is structured with the absence of a rising action , falling action ,climax and resolution and the presence of a flat structure. Due to absence of these, the story is termed as meaningless.

Hemingway focuses the story on mainly two characters American man and the Girl (Jig). The writer describes the girl as courageous. She is willing to call the situation what it is, to speak out, about their shallow relationship;" That's all we do isnt it--look at things and try new drinks?(166). It seems that Jig is brave enough to go through the pregnancy process, whereas the man is too selfish and afraid," But I don't want anybody but you. I don't want anyone else. (168) He cannot face up the change and challenge that life brings them. Ironically, hes the one responsible for building up her courage to have the operation. Throughout the story, it is observed that he (the man) is practically pleading with her to have the abortion because he does not want to deal with it. In spite of her objections, he returns every now and then to the subject. Even after she says," Would you please please please please please please please stop talking?(168), he persists. He also tries to manipulate her with passive -aggressive rhetoric" Well, the man said," If you don't want to you dont have to. I wouldnt have you do it if you didn't want to. But I know it's perfectly simple.(166). Towards the end, it is the girl who has to deal with the consequences of their joint action. She suffers the pain of her child, the regret of what could have been. She has to go through a procedure that is not simple and risk free. After realizing, that they cant have everything",(167) she resigns to the situation and copes with quiet resolve. The girl does not even complain or weep but simply say's," There's nothing wrong with me .I feel fine.(16) Throughout the story the writer conveys the mans selfish temperament and in the mean time he awards the girl, the badge of courage.

Hemingway describes the conflict between the man and the girl at a railway station. He sets a stark scene at a remote railway station on a very hot afternoon. At the railway station, it is observed that the American Man is trying to persuade his partner to get an abortion. The topic of their conversation (at the station) is never directly stated, but Hemingway ambiguously implies it. The writer graphically evokes the tension between the man and the girl waiting for a train as they discuss whether she should undergo the operation.

The title Hills Like White Elephants" is interpreted. The hills are said to have represented the rounded shape of a pregnant womens abdomen. A more interesting symbolism is the White Elephants. In Webster's Dictionary, under white elephant" one of the definition states" A property requiring much care and expense and yielding less profit." This is applicable to the story as it describes how the American man might view children. While Stating that hills look like white elephants (165), Jig also proves that she is not willingly anticipating the birth of his child. She later, reverses her original observation and in doing so allows the writer to capture her indecision and the general tension of the story.

Peju Ayeni

Summer Reading option

A child called "It" One Child's Courage to Survive By David Pelzer

Custom writing service can write essays on abuse

Peju Ayeni As I read your book it was very difficult for me to read but it was almost impossible for me to put it down. I know that you have been through a lot of hardships in your life. Can you just summarize what it felt like to live in that house.?

David J Pelzer This is something no child should have to go through. Words cannot describe what it was like living in that house. But I thank God that he helped me through it. It felt aws though God was testing me. Seeing how far I could be pushed

Peju Ayeni In the beginning to of the book you talked about the times before your mother began the abuse. Your mother was caring and even loving not just to your two brothers but also to you. You even compared your family to the Brady Bunch. Do you think that at first the abuse was really just discipline?

David J Pelzer It might have been discipline in the beginning. But all I know is that what was once discipline became abuse very quickly. When my Mom became an alcoholic she severely abused me. She slapped me and punched me every day. I remember a time when she pulled my arm so hard it came out of the socket. That is not discipline that is cruel punishment.

Peju Ayeni Do you see in any way why your mother singled you out to abuse. Why didn't she pick one of your other brothers to abuse or why didn't she abuse all three children?

David Pelzer I can't say why she chose me.. But she was a mental case. She really wasn't alright. I can't imagine why she picked me, but I think it was a source of enjoyment for her. Every time she slapped me or punched me she got joy out of it.

Peju Ayeni You where a product of extreme abuse and you suffered much agony. How did you survive?

David Pelzer I had to try my hardest. I had to think of ways to get by. There was a time when she locked me in the bathroom with ammonia and Clorox bleach . I realized that gas rises so I stayed low next to the vent on the floor and I survived.

Peju Ayeni In the book you were quoted in saying "If my mom didn't feed me, I'll feed myself. If she beat me I will tighten my body . I knew I had to take a stand"

David Pelzer I had to be the one to help myself. I knew no one else was going to help me. My father acted as if he was oblivious to what was going on. My mom told him that if he helped me she would leave him. I had to resort to stealing food from the garbage or people lunch boxes. I had to eat the dogs leftovers because of my mothers refusal to feed me.

Peju Ayeni Do you think that your mother wanted to kill you? At one point in your life she loved you. Do you feel she just needed a beating bag to relive her stress or did she want you dead.?

David Pelzer Yes of course she wanted me dead . With out a doubt. She almost killed me many times. The time when she locked me in the bathroom filled with Ammonia Clorox made it very clear to me. She wanted me to die but I always found a way to get. I remember that when she finally opened the bathroom door , she was even more upset because I wasn't dead yet. Also the time that she tumbled on me and stabbed me. That was one of the worst of all. At first she just threatened to stab me if I did not finish my choirs. Then she stabbed me right in my abdomen. My mother just left me there to bleed with no way to clean my wounds. She didn't even think to take me to the hospital She did many other crazy things like burn my hand on the stove.

Peju Ayeni You have been burnt, stabbed, beaten up numerous times and put through great lengths of agony. You are truly a testament of what a child can go through. How did you feel when you where rescued?

David Pelzer I never thought I would be rescued. I never thought I could be saved. I had been going through abuse since first grade. Finally the Nurse was tired of seeing my bruised up body and she decided to call social services and get me foster parents. I remember I was crying when she told me. I wasn't crying because I was sad. They were certainly tears of joy.. Even thought it happened almost 5 years ago the memory is st

fresh in my mind.

Dear Grandfather, December , 1880

We finally arrived, mother father and I. we all miss you grandmother and china so much. How is everything, we are all fine . . . We got off Angel Island three days ago and now we are at our new home. Its not the greatest especially compared to our home with you and grandmother in China, but I have to say that anything is better than the ship ride here, to America. It was so horrible. It was stinky and dirty and so crowded. Remember the night that you dropped us off at the dock and how many people was there well multiply that by like 100. They were such a long line to the ship and that was only the begging of our line standing. We did not get on the ship until around two in the morning. We went through inspections and they asked mother and father questions about our old life and what we hope to get out of our new life. I guess father answer all the questions right and our little family met the requirements because even though I was very tired we got to skip some lines and pass up a lot of people. I felt bad but I was also happy to go to our room and go to sleep. Our room was very small with one bed and the bathroom was connected to another family's room. The food was very blain and different made me miss Grandmother's cooking so much. There were so many different people on the ship, mostly they all spoke in the language that was from the country they came from and some spoke English. Everybody looked so different and acted so different also. The ship ride was like a pre view of Angel Island. I didn't realize how many people were on the ship until I got off. Every where you looked there were so many people carrying there luggage, trying to keep their whole family together, and trying to get into line before it got any longer. No matter what and how many people added onto the lines they seemed to go on forever, but after you get through the first one it is not too bad. The first line they collect all the information about you and your family and ask a lot of questions after that they split up the males from the females and then we go through the physical exception lines. They checked us up and down, from the top of our hair all the way down to how our feet are and how we walk. After we passed through that line we took a picture and went out to meet father again. I was so happy to see him again. Then the last line we had to stand through was a line to get our tickets for the, but that was going to take us to our new home in America. While I stood in that line with my father on my left and my mother on my right I looked forward and realized that is where my family is going straight forward I felt so good in side and so ready for anything. It was very late by the time we got onto our bus but I could still see outside the window, so many lights lit up the city called San Francisco. I was so beautiful. We arrived to our new house very late but I wasn't tired at all just excited. Well it is not very big it has two bed rooms, a kitchen, bathroom, and a living room. We live in what Americans call an apartment witch is a bunch of houses put together in one building. The past few days that I have been here I have seen so many things and made so many friends that live in the apartment and down the street. Mother has even made some new friends. Most of my new friends are in my class at school and I am teaching my neighbor Palo English. Father really likes his job he has not come home one day with out a smile on his face. He has met a man that has come from China also he says that e just came to see if he wants the rest of his family to come and they are. I told father and mother I thing that you and Grandmother should come. I think every thing is worth it even the ship ride. I miss you and Grandmother so much and I would be so happy if u came to live here in America with us and I know you would be happy here too. Well it is very late and I still have some homework to do. Write back as soon as you receive this letter. I love you.

Love always your granddaughter,

Mulan Chang

"Rear window" (154) composed by Alfred Hitchcock, has been dubbed as one of Hitchcock's 'most recognised films', 'a stylish and classic thriller'. Starring James Stewart as J. B. Jeff Jeffries, Grace Kelly as Lisa Carol Fermont, Wendell Corey as Detective Thomas J. Doyle, and Thelma Ritter as Stewart's nurse Stella, and Raymond Burr as Lars Burr.

J. B. Jeff Jeffries the professional photographer was determined to take the pictures of a lifetime and stepped in the way of a racecar accident. The result, a broken leg and six weeks in a cast in his own Greenwich Village apartment. Bored out of his wits, Jeff can let go of his profession and begins observing the world around him. Since his world is limited to the courtyard and the apartments surrounding him, he begins watching and studying his neighbours. As he becomes more familiar with the cast of characters surrounding him, Stewart begins naming different neighbours and becomes familiar with their routines For example the gorgeous Ballerina dubbed as 'Miss Torso', and a lonely middle aged women appropriately named 'Miss Lonely Heart'. Burr plays a scowling, barrel-chested salesman who steps out several times late one night carrying very heavy luggage and returns with the same bags much lighter. When his bickering, bed-ridden wife is conspicuously absent the next morning, Stewarts analytical imagination goes into overdrive. At first, he calls his friend Detective Thomas J. Doyle to some initial investigations as to the whereabouts of Thorwarld's wife. After investigation, Doyle concludes that Burr is harmless. Stewart deduces something far more sinister. He enlists his girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly) to investigate some of the events that puts him and her in unexpected mortal danger.

The beauty about Rear Window is its inherent simplicity and the masterful way in which Hitchcock tells the story. The editing of the visual text and the way Hitchcock is using surrounding apartments and their inhabitants to add colour to the text, creates a good pace that always feels natural. Times during which nothing happens in the actual story line, are masterfully used to show us snippets of the people around, which help set the scene and develop the plot, often at times different characters becoming involved in the plot. Each of these 'snap-shoots' is intriguing and exciting to watch, offering a wide variety of interesting characters and events.

Help with essay on Camera Angles in Rear Window

Hitchcock's use of subjective camera angles and lighting, convey the base elements of the crime fiction genre mystery, suspicion, intrigue. In the case of 'Rear Window' the main source of mystery occurs in the process not of seeking out who committed the crime, but rather how the crime was committed and proving it. Hitchcock stays true to his reputation, and uses unusual but highly effective camera angles throughout the visual text. The use of panning across the courtyard, subjective camera views of Stewart binoculars and telescopic lens, allow responders, to see what his eyes are seeing, close ups as well as long range shoots heighten the element of suspense throughout the visual text. He establishes the basis of Stewarts character in a single camera pan -- across the cast on his broken leg, over a stack of magazine covers and a smashed camera (evidence of the accident that landed him in a cast), and up to a wall of framed, action-packed pictures divulging his intrepid photojournalism career. The use of lighting and colour is also successful in establishing different scenes and atmosphere, for example Burr's face cast in half shadow and the entire room pitch black, when Thorwarld enters Stewart room, intensifies suspense, tension and a sense of dread from responders.

Hitchcock's 'Rear Window', is a masterpiece filled with suspense and excitement, the visual text is a superb example of how to make a film on one set and still make the viewer feel free of claustrophobia and completely terrified and engrossed as the take a journey on the process of investigation, in proving the existence of a crime.
