To Kill A Mocking bird

Harper Lee uses a motif, mocking birds, in most of the main characters to explore the theme of prejudice. She also uses characterisation to show the contrast of how it affects all of the characters in the novel to "To Kill A Mocking Bird".

The Finches- Atticus, Jem and Scout- are all mocking birds. The name Finch suggests this.

Atticus was Harper Lee's ideal man his only fault was that he was too idealistic. Atticus didn't see any place for prejudice of any kind. He defended a blackman Tom Robinson in a case that he knew would be very difficult to win and could totally change his life. Atticus was brave in doing this. He was "nigger lover" by several people but just took it in his stride. He even replied to Scout "I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody."

He also tried to act the same around everyone. He was always polite to black people, undesirable people and the rest of Maycomb. He always called Mayella Miss Mayella. Mayella didn't see this as him being polite and got annoyed "Long hew keeps on callin' me ma'am an' sayin' Miss Mayella I don't hefta take his sass." Miss Maudie comments on this and says "he's consistently polite".

Atticus was clever and carefully planed out how he asked the questions during the court case. He asks Mayella about her family background before he questions her about the alleged rape. Similarly, he asks Tom about his previous convictions before he asks him about the situation with Mayella. He does this because he knows it will have a particular effect on the jury listening "Jem said Atticus was showing the jury that Tom had nothing to hide."

Scout is also a mocking bird and was affected by prejudice. She, like Atticus, was called a "nigger lover" and was nearly killed because Atticus defended Tom Robinson.

Scout started off quite prejudiced and would make fun or Boo Radley in the games she played with Jem and Dill. "Scout you can be Mrs Radley". They didn't understand about prejudice but Atticus taught her later to be nice to everybody like he was "I do my best to love everybody" and "You shouldn't call them niggers you should call them Negros"

Calpurnia also influenced Scout. She was taught that politeness should be shown to all people even if their manner differ from yours "Don't matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house yo' comp'ny, and don't let me catch you remarkin' on other ways like you so high and mighty!"

Scout was a tomboy. She got into a few fights because she was defending what she thought was right. She fought her cousin because he said Atticus as a nigger lover" I guess it ain't your fault if Uncle Atticus is a nigger lover, but I'm here to tell you it certainly does mortify the rest of the family." To this Scout responded by jumping on him and fighting him "It was easy to collar Francis" Aunt Alexandra was sexist and constantly criticised the way Scout talked, dressed and acted "It's time you started being a girl and acting right."

Scout was polite to everybody and very honest but still spoke a little slang. She told a group of ladies that her breeches were under her dress "under my dress."

Scout was able to make friends with almost anyone and was very loving towards her brother. She befriended Walter Cunningham. This was a shock to Aunt Alexandra and she didn't want Scout to see him "Because-he-is-trash that's why you can't play with him, picking up his bad habits and Lord-knows-what!" Scout worshiped Jem and was very up set when he was knocked out unconscious "Auntie, is Jem dead?"

Scout was clever and wanted others to know about people like the Cunninghams. She tried explaining to her teacher but, but her teacher thought this stereotyping was offensive "Walters one of the Cunninghams, Miss Caroline."

All scouts teachings helped her to respect others. At the black people's church Scout didn't ask many questions and respected their way of doing things.

Tom Robinson is the most obvious character who adds to the theme of prejudice. He is also a mocking bird. He was targeted because of his race.

He was always polite. He always calls Judge Taylor and Atticus "Suh" which was his way of saying sir. He helped Mayella "She'd call me in, suh. Seemed like every time I passed by yonder she'd have some little somethin' for me to do- choppin' kindlin', totin' water for her." Despite of this he was charged with rape. Mr Link Deas said he was a very good worker.

He talked with the Southern colloquialisms and dialect "She'd call me in, suh. Seemed like every time I passed by yonder she'd have some little somethin' for me to do- choppin' kindlin', totin' water for her." This was similar to most of the black people in Maycomb.

The whole town wanted Tom to win but no one wanted to take the side of a black person over a white person- except Atticus "Did it ever strike you that judge Taylor naming Atticus to defend that boy was no accident?"

Boo Radley another mocking bird was also affected by prejudice. He was locked up by his parents, for doing one wrong thing, and only let out at night. He was very secretive. This gave others a wrong impression of him and people were scared of his ways. He would leave presents for Scout and Jem in a tree.

He was very kind and kept a careful eye over Jem and Scout. He came out with a blanket after the fire at Miss Maudie's house. He saved their lives by stopping Bob Ewell stab Jem and Scout after Bob had lynched them.

Harper Lee's view on prejudice is that it is very wrong and that people should change their opinions. This is noticeable through out the novel being the least prejudiced but at the end many people had changed their opinion about characters affected by prejudice.

How women are depicted in Relationships

Judith Minty, Marge Piercy, and Judith Viorst are all authors of poems about women in romantic relationships and, how the women are depicted in these relationships. These authors seem to depict women through their works as dependent, weak and helpless beings. Minty and Piercy tend to use metaphors along with imagery and personification, in order to convey the emotion of the women characters. In contrast Viorst uses Anaphora and has a different way of describing the couple in her poem. Granted these poems were written in the 10's, times have changed and so have the women.

Judith Minty, author of Conjoined writes about a woman in her kitchen comparing an onion with the relationship she and her husband have. The tone of the poem is negative; as one might gather if a relationship in the poem is being compared to an onion. Minty uses descriptions such as " a two headed monster, deformed, an accident, …fighting to suck at it's mothers teats, freaks, doomed to live" (Roberts, pp.70). She continually uses negative images to describe this onion, the "two headed monster" (Roberts, pp.70), which represents her and her husband in a very negative manner. "Two joined under one transparent skin," then she asks her husband "do you feel the skin that binds us together as we move, heavy in this house?" (Roberts, pp.71) The use of such images in this poem may lead one to believe she feels trapped and unhappy in the relationship. The overall tone of this poem depicts women as slaves rather than companions; implying that a woman's place is in the kitchen "Ah but men don't slice onions in the kitchen, seldom see what is invisible." (Roberts, pp.70)

Marge Piercy author of A Work of Artifice, writes about a young bonsai tree that collapsed when lightning struck it, "on the side of a mountain till split by lighting." (Roberts, pp.7) A man then picks up the tree and brings it home. The man raises the tree. He keeps clipping and binding the tree so that it will grow to be only nine inches tall. This tree has the potential of growing up to 80 feet. The poem then shifts to talk about how women had been "pruned" (Roberts, pp.7), by "binding their feet, curling their hair and somehow crippling their mind." (Roberts, pp.7) Much like when women could not vote, get an education or even have an every day job. Women were made to think or persuaded to think that they were the smaller and weaker being. This poem although about a tree very clearly defines the role of many women in the 10's as well as today. Women were indirectly described as being raised by men; raised to assume the role that society defined them as, weather it be to stay small, weak and pretty, or to be a stay home wife while the man remains the breadwinner.

Buy custom how women are depicted in relationships term paper

Judith Viorst, author of True Love. Viorst writes about a woman in a marriage, being opposed to speaking of the marriage as a burden or bondage, she makes it seem like it is a healthy relationship, one where both she as well as her husband sacrifice for each other. Her poem is slightly different from the two previously talked about. Viorst talks about looking physically attractive "even when there's no one here but him" (Roberts, pp.1008). The poem goes on to talk about her sacrificing, by watching football even though she despises it. The question being asked throughout the poem is "Is it true love because?" (Roberts, pp. 1008) The poem is different from the others not only because of the somewhat positive or humorous tone, but because the relationship described seems to be that of an equal one. "The husband understands that his wife hates him when he left her at home with the baby, the painter and the exterminator. Then she understood that he hated her, when the stock she told him not to buy went up twenty-six points." (Roberts, pp.100)

These poems all clearly define the roles women played in relationships in the 10's and of course today and the way their roles have changed However since then women have come a long way as in Minty's poem Conjoined. Today if a woman felt that trapped or miserable in a relationship she could leave her husband by means of separation or divorce. In Piercy's A Work of Artifice the woman was suppressed, women are no longer suppressed at least not to the extent of binding feet and corsets. Today women feel free to attend a university and study in fields such as law, architecture and engineering these were not, until recently, predominately male fields. Women have certainly come a long way since 10. However, not all relationships were one sided in the 10's as Viorst suggested in True Love. Her couple is happy and equal. It demonstrates how real relationships work, that is, they are give and take. The poem even says that when things like physical attraction fade all a couple has left is love. And that is what 'true love' is. Viorst says it best

"Despite cigarette cough, tooth decay, acid indigestion, dandruff, and other features of married life that tend to dampen the fires of passion,

We can still feel something

We can call

True love." (Roberts, pp.100)

This is a great example of the positive tone used by Viorst.

Women have since been exposed to 'the mans world' it is now imperative that women go to school and become capable of supporting themselves. Women today have issues that women in the 10's would have never thought about. I believe these authors are all glad women have come as far as they have. Although only a few decades have past times did change along with women.

In March 000 federal chancellor Gerhard Schröder was pleased to announce the plan to introduce a new form of temporary work permit in Germany, the German Green Card.

At that time there was an acute lack of IT-specialists, due to economical ignorance and false estimation on the future labor market.

The government and the industrial associations in the information and communications technology sector wanted to recruit a total of 0000 IT-specialists for a limited time with a maximum of five years. Possible applicants are non-european-union computer specialists with university and polytechnique qualifications, e. g. Bachelors or Masters degrees; in addition applicants without a degree are provided of an anual salary of at least € 51000. The intention of recruiting them is to immediately abolish the lack of labor and to insure Germany will not miss the connection to other high tech countries.During the same period, Germany will try to close the gap of education and continued education by qualifying the labour force for the demand of the future.

Positive results of the greencard should be inland investments, reduction of overtime, improvement of competition and the creation of jobs.

Cheap University Papers on German Greencard

. The German Green Card Immigration Made Simple?

After the introduction of the greencard in August 000 more than 11000 immigrants, mostly from Eastern Europe, took the opportunity to work as an IT-specialist in Germany. The green card euphoria only lasted about two years, although there would still be a big demand for high qualified IT-specialists and the market seemed to recover. The tip of the German government shows an increase of % by the year 004.

Only two years ago german companies had longed for years to get high qualified IT-specialists. In Germany there are almost no high qualified specialists for the software business. The German specialists mostly are in their 50`s, settled and not willing to move and don't have enough know-how about the new market as there is no continued education for them. With the introduction of the greencard they finally found the specialists required, mostly via internet and about 10 % were obtained by the german labor exchange. The foreign employees showed no problems integrating as the company's language is mostly English and programming language is the same worldwide. Most of the greencard holders came to Germany because of the work not because of the country and are allowed to legally take their families with them without any other visa regulations.

However it was not always easy to make the foreign specialists to come to Germany as it has an unattractive business image worldwide. First there is the language and cultural barriers, then you have limited networks, and finally the opportunity to start new companies but getting the necessary capital is limited.

Those imigrants that decided to come to Germany are disappointed by the government and the actual situation of the market.

Companies are cutting more work places as the demand for foreign IT-specialists decrease. The foreign greencard holder's are usually the first to lose their job. Lots of them have already changed their job, are unemployed, or went back to their home countries. As they only get one year contracts they have no demand for public assistance. If they do not find a new job after three months from notice of termination of employment they will have to leave Germany for their home countries again.

Furthermore the German green card is not as attractive as it should be because the specialists only get a limited working permission of up to 5 years and their partners none. Language skills and the cultural difference do not faciliate the situation.

The German companies mostly profit by the greencard specialists. They can now find the specialists required worldwide, after long and unsatisfied recruitment on the home market.

As the greencard regulations tell companies to pay at least € 51.000 per year, most of the smaller companies can not afford those imigrants.

After a long slump the industry concentrates on its power again, and still about 50 foreign candidates apply weekly. Although the introduction of the greencard created an average of ,5 new work places per greencard it did not improve or change the german market.

The problem of qualification in Germany exists with or without a greencard and the € 50 million immediate aid for the educational system. There needs to be a change in future investments and the structure of education. A renovation of the educational system is an indispensable step not to fall into the mediocrity, as not only the IT-sector is afflicted by the lack of specialists.

. Conclusion

If Germany wants to keep up with other countries on the international market the government will have to change something. The greencard is a short-term solution but should be designed on different conditions. A limited working permission and other personal restrictions are not very attractive as well as a negative reputation for possible employees from abroad. The introduction of a greencard is a start to get out of the gap but it does not change anything for the future German labor market. The educational system also has to be changed from its roots.

What the industrial society of the sixties was for the foreign workers from Southern Europe is now the beginning informational society the IT- specialists from all over the world. Germany can not expect others to give up everything for the German welfare.

We cannot welcome them with open arms to help us out and then squeeze the life out of them in the process.

But the most important thing is that the German politicians have to practice what they preach in every business.

In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on German Greencard, we are here to assist you. When I think about what has shaped my life, I realize there are many things. My immigrant parents and the way they raised me has shaped me into the person I am today. The environment I live in has produced opportunities such as attending college and getting to travel and see the world. As I really think and look back at my life, however, one experience in particular has irreversibly changed me and my outlook on life. This life changing time was my rowing career.

I attended a Catholic College Prep School. In the very first weeks of my freshman, year I was introduced to the sport of rowing. Before this time, I hadn't heard of or seen much about the sport, so I was somewhat hesitant. One of my friends had been rowing for about a year already and she tried to inspire me to try it out, so I did. My obsession with the sport sparked instantly. Without any rowing experience at all, I tried out and made the team. I had no idea that this would be the launch of a now unforgettable, lifelong passion.

As my novice season progressed, coaches and parents said I developed into "one of the most talented freshmen the crew team has seen in years." My excitement and enthusiasm seemed to grow as quickly as my strength. In the following months my novice eight person boat won a few races as well as lost a few. The outcomes of the races weren't nearly as impressive as the leader that I saw my shy, timid self turn into. The end of the season rolled around and with it came the end of the school year. I was happy to relax and enjoy my summer, but I was also eager to start a new rowing season. I was filled with determination and drive to make the upcoming season a winning one.

As the summer ended another crew season began. I, along with thirty other returning freshman, were now sophomores and no longer on the novice team. The next month was filled with grueling, daily, four hour tryouts for the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. I was really happy with the progress I was making, but now surrounded by many more experienced and older rowers, my competition was stiff. Nonetheless, my hard work continued day after day because I had my eyes on making that Varsity boat. After the month of tryouts, the line-ups for the upcoming races were posted, and I made that esteemed boat.

My time in the varsity boat was nothing like I had ever imagined it. I was rowing with junior and seniors that had traveled the country competing against other teams. They had such maturity and a high level of understanding for this sport. They were quite tough and intimidating, but took me under their wings and taught me so much. While my coaches prepared me physically for the changes and demands I was facing, my older teammates prepared me mentally. They taught me about attitude and mental strength. They taught me that so much of sport is mental and not just physical. I learned that your body has limits but you mind doesn't. If I really wanted to reach my goals as a rower, I had to first and foremost prepare myself mentally, and tell myself I was capable of anything.

My team and I were learning so much and it showed. It was visible in our practices and most of all it was visible as we competed against other teams. The fall season had ended much more successfully than the last. Our boat had become one entity, one unit. We couldn't wait to get the spring season under way because we knew that with more work came potential to become one impressive, note-worthy boat.

Soon enough, the work started once again and we had one objective that was above all, to win the Midwest Scholastic Championship. The season progressed and our coaches were pushing us to limits I never thought humanly possible. The work load started to rapidly increase and at times I questioned what I had gotten myself into. It was at these times of doubt when I truly learned the most about myself, my work ethic, and my life. While growing up I heard many times that to make your dreams and aspirations come true you have to believe in yourself- nothing instilled this in me as much as my rowing experiences. After some of the physical tests I went through, I believed I could do absolutely anything if I just put my mind to it, and I still do to this day. The people that I was surrounded by were a pillar of my strength. I learned how much the environment around you and the attitudes of the people among you shape a person's life. My coaches and my teammates taught me that I was capable of anything; all I had to do was work hard and believe in myself. Never in my life was I part of such a resilient, dedicated, and powerful team.

The work continued, as did our victories. It was now two weeks before the Midwest Championships and we were going into the competition undefeated. We had fourteen days left to practice, and we counted each day as a step closer to success. Race day came quickly. We advanced in the preliminaries, we beat our heat, and then we went on to win our semi-finals. The hour of the final came, this hour that we were waiting and preparing for for so long. We started to realize how close it truly was as we put the boat in the water and rowed up to the start. My heart was pounding as we glided by the screaming crowds. We finally got to our staring dock and waited for the other nine boats in our final. It was now a minute from the start as the announcer blared from his bull horn. The count down would start in fifty-five seconds. I counted each second in my head like it was my last. Then we all heard the announcers voice over the noise of the crowd "5-4---1-Ready all, ROW!" The flag went down and that signaled the beginning of our starting sequence. The rest is history.

In life, in general we unconsciously play the roles we view ourselves as male or female and we tend to play the role that others expect us from the time that we were children. I remember my parents were expecting me as a boy, because they had two daughters already and they really wanted a boy. So I acted less girlish. Then as I grew up, I realized my role as a lady, I should act more feminine. Then I was unaware of how I changed my behavior. In class, we explored the issue of men and women through reading Wollstonecraft, Ehrlich, Teen's essays. What make women distinguished from men can be explained by the causes in society, media, power structures and that women and men play specific roles in society

Wollstonecraft says with men in a position of power, the men create weak women. Women are required to be sensitive, to use soft tones, to be delicate by men. All of these are almost ¡§synonymous¡¨ with weakness. But sensibility, softness, delicacy are not bad things. They are some of the features that make women distinguishable from men. And these make the world richer and more interesting. The bad things are women give up their strength of mind and body for them. For example, in order to look pretty, some women eat too little to keep slim, some women spend too much money on make up and too much time to remove their unwanted hair. To sum up, they sacrifice their strength for beauty. These phenomenon are also the result of the commercials on TV and ads in magazines and the concepts society imposing on women. Women's beauty is essential. In contrast, Men's essential quality is ability.

Goodman tells the story about ¡§The Company Man¡¨ who sacrifices everything for his work. And his wife, in contrast, sacrifices her job for her husband and their children. Goodman points out the company creates ¡§The Company Men¡¨, a ¡§type A¡¨ workaholic. The company's president ask who can replace the dead guy ¡§Who's been working the hardest?¡¨ (pp.170) As a consequence, he created ¡§The Company Men¡¨, ¡§The Company Men¡¨ created a house wife-his wife and another workaholic-his oldest son.

Ehrlich says media create a tough image of a cowboy, strong and silent. In fact, cowboys are ¡§androgynous at the core¡¨. (pp.10) They are nurtured and softhearted. They are being motherhood because their jobs require them to nurture calves and take care of their mothers and work hard. They are ¡§tough¡¨, because ¡§they get rained and snowed on, scuffed up by wind.¡¨ Actually they are not being tough, but ¡§tough it out¡¨. Which means they cop with the toughness. Ehrlich points out the media and our society want men to be manly, to be strong, to be chivalrous in spite of they could be both of manliness and femininity.

Write your Women versus men's difference research paper

Tannen discusses men and women's difference from how the children being raised.. Men and women are in differing ways of using language, because from childhood other talk to them differently and also they spend most of their time play in the same-sex groups, hence they are from different culture. I think the cause of these behaviors are base on biological reason. Because the same biological reason, women care more about relationship than their career. Women tend to focus on the intimacy and men on the independence. As John Gray said ¡§Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus¡¨. Women's sense of self is defined through their feelings and the quality of their relationships. This is another reason which adds to a women's dependence. However achieving goals is very important to a man because it is a way to improve his competence and feel good about himself.

Truth argued against the stereotype that women are weak. She said she was a strong women by showing her muscle that she worked the hardest job in the field, ahead of men. She had born thirteen children and seen them almost sold off into slavery (and by asked ¡§aren't I a women.¡¨) Truth pointed out women can be as strong as men physically and mentally.

From the society structure point of view, men making more money and in higher positions in jobs are the result of the specific roles they play in society. Men are required to work outside and bring money home. Women are required to be responsible for family and their children. In some cases, men and women switch roles, but that is not common. Thus, women most likely hold entry position because they may have children in their most critical time of their careers that prevent them from advancing or they are forced to switch from a more important position to a less important position in order to care family more, or some women even quit their jobs and stay home with children. In fewer cases, women sacrifice by not having children to keep working on a fast track job. Ineither way women need to sacrifice, but men need not.

Others' perspectives play a major role in who we are. However, women are increasingly aware of the influence of stereotypes on their life roles. Many women fight for women's right and the equal opportunity and become more and more independent and increase their important position in corporations. Women can learn to be independent because women are as strong as men like Truth said. And women should learn to be independent for it is true happiness like Wollstonecraft said. And women are equally intelligent otherwise why do men give them the responsibility of raising children and governing a family as Wollstonecraft points out. Men also can help to be responsible for family and children because they posses the ability to nurture as Ehrlich points out in her essay.

There is much a person desires in a vehicle, one; does it have power windows, Power locks, power seats, two; does it have a high horse power engine, or does it have a low geared engine, three; does it have nice interior, and can it hold the entire family, but most of all, four, is the price reasonable, or can I afford it. These are just a few things a person does when shopping for a new vehicle, but in this whole process are they missing the picture. Why do they have such nice vehicles to choose from, how do they get the money to be able to afford these vehicles, and how almost whoever you are can have a vehicle? I have been observing people and found out that vehicles make people lazy, but without them they would they would not be able to make a living ninety percent of the time. So when you put all of these facts in an Anthropological mind, it all makes since, why vehicles mean so much in our lives.

First lets talk about how people take vehicles for granted, I went to a car dealership with my mother, because she wanted to buy a new SUV the first one we looked at was a beautiful Lexus, it was one year old, with twenty eight thousand miles on it; with leather interior, power windows and locks, with a V6 engine. She did not like the car for a couple of reasons; one it was expensive, and two it did not have a power full enough engine. The next one we looked at was a new BMW SUV, it had all of the same features, but a more power full engine, at around the same price, and that was the one she was considering to buy. Do you think in the search for a new car she ever thought that 15 years ago you couldn't get power windows, or leather seats, or a power full engine that still got 5 miles to the gallon? No but that doesn't make it her fault, because 15 years ago she didn't want those things, so that just goes to show you that people change with the times, and as things get better, people start wanting the better things.

Even though the vehicle is a big part of our lives, it also effects our lives and health in a bad way for example, if you needed some bread and milk and the store was a mile away, would we walk/run there or would we just get in the car and drive to the store, of course we would take option number two. But that is not the only thing vehicles strip us of, think about how much more land we would have on the planet if we did not have the vehicle; therefore on the flipside of that what if we did not get our ready supply of food, drink, equipment, supplies, etc. Another thing a vehicle does for us is commute us to work, or school, and everything in between, because in today's society nobody works on a farm at home living off the land and killing there livestock for food, but can we blame the loss of that life style on the vehicle. Another thing would we be able to see the world without the vehicle, would vacation spots be here without the vehicle, I think not because if you own Walt Disney World, your only crowed will be within a fifty mile radius at the most. So the real question is does the vehicle help us or hurt us, we will never decide for sure.

I'm sure not much of this is making a lot of since, but if you put it in an Anthropological view it would all fall in to place. Let take the four agents of change and apply them to the vehicle. Starting with innovation, what is the primary innovation of the car? I would say the wheel, and then what is the Secondary innovation of the vehicle? I would say the first wheel able to move without assistance, In the process of innovation it talks about how most innovations start simple; then grow bigger, and then grow bigger, and then they start making inventions for the inventions, is that not the way a vehicle came about? I think it is. Now lets apply the vehicle to diffusion, did we make the first wheel, no, but we inherited it, did we make the first car, no but we inherited that also, did we make all the modern conveniences for the vehicle, no, but we borrowed other cultures inventions and used them to make our inventions better, thus relating to Diffusion. Now lets talk about our cultural losses, what did we lose as a society to the car, we already talked about a couple; for example loss of land, and loss of exercise, but there are more, what about loss of lives due to car crashes, we lose thousands of people a year due to car crashes. What about our past means of transportation; how many people do you see ride there horse to work, and how many people have a buggy in there driveway, none. Now we are the last one Acculturation, how did people deal with coming to the states and seeing that everyone was driving a car, I'm sure it was a big change if they have never seen it done before, but as human beings we have a certain way for dealing with such cultural changes, we call it adaptability, and with this over time we can go to any culture and adapt to it.

In conclusion the vehicle is probably on of the biggest innovations in the past one hundred years. It has changed so much of our culture and did it right under our noses, without most of us even knowing what hit us. This has happened a lot in the last few years, we have created things, and have had to adapt to the creation, every thing we create is to try to make our life easier, and more comfortable, but no matter what we do every thing we invent, and everything we change, adds new stresses to our lives, and the only way we can understand how it is today is threw the study of Anthropology. So when it comes to the question, do we really need cars and if not would life be easier without them, my answer to that is we have little control of how we live, because it is human nature never to be satisfied.

Nonverbal communication plays an important role in our interaction with others. Nonverbal communication includes facial expressions, tones of voice, gestures, eye contact, spatial arrangements, patterns of touch, expressive movement, and other nonverbal acts. These nonverbal acts are used to accomplish a number of our interpersonal goals as communicators. This concept of nonverbal communication played an important role in my recent visit to the emergancy room.

Cheap Custom Essays on nonverbal communication in hospitals

I arrived at University hospital at around am on Sunday morning, feeling weak, nauseous, dizzy, and like my brain was exploding from the inside. The nurse gestured for me to sit down, I noticed her body language and complied. She greeted me with a warm smile, slightly leaning forward, while gathering information about the nature of my emergancy. Her smile helped me feel a little more at ease in the hostile environment of the hospital. Her forward lean and open posture let me know that she was interested in what I had to say and was trying to help. I was positioned in a wheelchair and then rolled into a small private room. The gurney I was transferred to was cold and rigid to the touch. The metallic, aseptic smell lingering in the chilly air hung in my nose; constantly reminding me of where I was.

When the doctor arrived, he greeted me with a handshake, a warm smile, and kept eye contact with me while speaking. All of these nonverbal cues conveyed to me that he was paying attention and not being distracted by the chart in his hands or the beeping heart monitor that I was wired to. The doctor asked me to show him where I had pain. I gestured to the origin of the searing sting in my skull. The docter then asked me to describe my symptoms, all the while nodding as a signal to show that he was comprehending what I was explaining. Then, the nurse returned to take blood; she noticed my nervous facial expressions when she began to prepare my arm for the I.V. My whole body tensed when she unveiled the huge needle that was destined for my arm. She touched my shoulder in a warm and friendly way to try to convey her good intentions. At this point she could plainly comprehend from my face that I was in so much pain that I would put my fear of needles aside, letting her poke and prod my body at her descression. Her forehead subsequently wrinkled in silent concentration as she searched for a suitable vein, her eyebrows suddenly lowering in a show of disappointment. She missed the vein, and when she tried again to insert the needle, she completely punctured my vein, thereby causing a hematoma. I shuttered at the new shooting twinge of pain coming from my arm, joining the long list of things currently ailing me. After the nurse completed a successful I.V. in my other arm, she gave a noticeable sigh of relief. The doctor returned and performed a battery of physical tests. He then examined my sense of balance, pupil reaction, and overall response to visual stimuli. The doctor then moved in very close to me, looking very concerned. He informed me that I was to have a C.A.T. scan to search for a possible aneurysm.

As I waited patiently for my turn to be scanned, I watched through the door as other patients were wheeled down the hall by orderlies. I tried to take my mind off the pain by guessing what each person was afflicted with. One woman was hastily pushed down the hall, her face wincing in pain, legs bent and stomach protruding from her white T-shirt. This one was easy, all the nonverbal cues of child labor. The next patient was a middle-aged man; his gurney was parked just outside of my room. The orderly kept yelling at him to wake up and open his eyes. The man was limp, and his motions when awake were erratic and overemphasized. The orderly asked him to stand. The man fell off the gurney and rolled on to the ground. This was another easy nonverbal diagnosis. The patient was exhibiting traditional cues of being severely intoxicated. This nonverbal guessing game was amusing, but it was finally my turn to take a trip to the CAT scan. The scan went quickly, but on the way back to my hospital room, I caught a glimpse of the pregnant woman behind some curtains. She had given birth, and her newborn baby was rapped in a pink blanket with a pink beanie on its head. With all the pink that the child was adorned with, I guessed that she had given birth to a girl because pink being a nonverbal symbol for the female gender. There were countless examples of nonverbal communication expressed during my lengthy hospital visit, but most of them are a little fuzzy due to the drugs they pumped into me. Drugs aside, the importance of effective patient/doctor communication cannot be emphasized enough. Communication involves much more than a doctor's verbal ability. Nonverbal communication, listening and observational skills also play important roles. The doctor gathered more information about my emergancy by observing my facial expressions, movement, tone of voice, gestures, and eye contact than listing to my words alone. My visit to the emergancy room reinforced the important role of nonverbal communication in a situation where I had to communicate effectively. The exchange of information between the doctor and me was successful in the sense that the verbal and nonverbal communication was effective, and it helped build a therapeutic relationship that produced a desired outcome, a proper diagnosis, with my health being restored!
