Allie a character in J.D. Salinger novel, The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield's younger brother and an important role in the novel. Holden had a strong bond between him and his little brother; a bond that no one can understand nor break. Holden really cares about Allie, and his life was dependent on him. Allie was not treated as a real character in the novel, but more like a symbol towards Holden, a symbol of Holden's desire to return back to his childhood.

At the beginning of the novel, Stradlater asks Holden to write his composition about anything descriptive, like a room or a house. Instead, Holden writes about Allie's baseball glove. Why did he do this? Before all this had happened, Holden received the news about him getting kicked out of Pencey and doesn't really care much for anything that happens later in the novel. As Holden starts on Stradlater's composition, he pulled out Allie's baseball mitt from his suitcase. He thought about the happy past that Allie and Holden had shared. He thought about Allie's intelligence, his red hair, and his laughter. It had really brightened up Holden's mood. "Besides, I sort of liked writing about it" (Salinger ) and ""I know he's dead! Don't you think I know that? I can still like him though, can't I? Just because somebody's dead, you don't just stop liking them, for God's sake--especially if they were about a thousand times nicer than the people you know that're alive and all" (171). In those quotes, Holden expresses his love toward Allie, which he rarely does in the novel. Among the few people Holden likes, Allie is one of them. Holden enjoys living in the past memories that he had created with his younger brother, and is willing to return back to those memories; to return back to Allie, his younger brother.

As Holden reminisces about the memories that he and Allie had created, a smile comes upon his face. He wants to change his past, wants to go back in time and fix his mistakes. As mentioned before, he likes Allie. "What I did, I started talking, sort of out loud, to Allie. I do that sometimes when I get very depressed. Anyway, Allie heard us talking about it, and he wanted to go, and I wouldn't let him. I told him he was a child. So once in a while, now, when I get very depressed, I keep on saying to him, "Okay. Go home and get your bike and meet me in front of Bobby's house. Hurry up" (). The people who Holden cares about, Holden try to return to them. For example, Holden's little sister, Phoebe. When Holden was depressed, he either thought about her, or visits her. Holden does the same thing with Allie. Whenever Holden is depressed, Holden thinks about the memories that Allie had shared and the desire of returning to his former childhood grows stronger. The times spending together with Allie are memories that Holden would always cherish. "My brother Allie and I, if w were with our parents and all, we used to move our seats and go way down so we could watch him He's the best drummer I ever saw… Allie sent him a postcard, but I'll bet he never got it. We weren't too sure how to address it" (18). As Holden reminisced to the memories that Allie and he had created, the stronger his desire to return to his childhood grows. Those memories would be with Holden forever.

When Allie died, Holden "broke all the goddam windows with [his] fist, just for the hell of it" ().Holden didn't care much for the injuries that came with his broken fists, as he says "my hand still hurts me once in a while, when it rains and all, and I can't make a real fist any morenot a tight one, I meanbut outside of that I don't care much" (). When Allie died, Holden didn't care much for anything anymore. It seemed that after Allie's death, Holden's life began to spiral downwards towards failure that "cannot be fixed". Throughout the novel, Holden had suicidal thoughts and thought about jumping out the window and not wanting other people to look at his dead body. The reason why Holden is thinking such suicide thoughts is maybe because he wants to be with Allie. He wants to return to the "good ol' days". It seemed that Holden had dreams before. Holden started to play golf when he was ten, but now, he's an outsider, with no where to go. "I mean I'm not going to be a goddamn surgeon or violinist or anything anyway" (). Holden knows that he couldn't compare up to Allie, but he had dreams once, but was gone when Allie was gone. Holden didn't want to disappear before in the novel, but, as Holden's began to fail more and more in this life, Holden wants to give it all up. "Every time I'd get to the end of a block I'd make believe I was talking to my brother Allie. I'd say to him, "Allie, don't let me disappear Allie, don't let me disappear. Allie, don't let me disappear. Please, Allie." And then when I'd reach the other side of the street without disappearing, I'd thank him. Finally, what I decided I'd do, I decided I'd go away. I decided I'd never go home again and I'd never go away to another school again…and then I'd start hitchhiking my way out West" (18). As the quote states, Holden doesn't want to go on with his present life. He wants to walk away from all this trouble and pain and return to his former childhood that he had shared with his dear little brother, Allie. But he knows that it wouldn't happen because no one can alter the past. He had given up on his life. There is nothing to live for; he is now under the care of a psychoanalyst guy, ending his story there.

Custom Essays on Holden's Desire

In a literary criticism that S.N. Behram noted was, "that the hero and heroine of the novel, The Catcher in the Rye, Holden's dead brother Allie and Jane Gallagher, never appear in it, but they are always in Holden's mind, together with his sister, Phoebe, These three people constitute Holden's emotional frame of reference." As stated in the preceding paragraphs, whenever Holden is depressed, he thinks about his little brother, Allie and his little sister, Phoebe. The criticism also implied that even though Allie isn't a major character in Catcher, he did have a great impact on Holden. Allie and Phoebe are the only two people that Holden really cared about.

All in all, Allie's role in the novel was more like a symbol of Holden's desire is to return back to his childhood memories. Holden really cared for Allie, he was happy living with him in the past, but now, Holden seemed to be giving up on life so he can relive his happy, childhood memories. Allie a character in J.D. Salinger novel, The Catcher in the Rye, Holden's little brother, and Holden's desire to return back to his childhood.

According to the American Heart Association, more than 1 million Americans will suffer a heart attack this year, and about 40 percent of those individuals will die. Fortunately, several lifestyle changes can help improve heart health. Good nutrition habits, regular exercise, stress reduction and smoking cessation are recommended by the American Heart Association as the first line of defense in preventing cardiovascular disease. Atherosclerosis is a condition due to the build-up of fatty substances and in result, the arteries become hardened and narrowed. Heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and ischemia may be the result of atherosclerosis. There are many remedies for treating atherosclerosis.

One example is drug therapy. There are several drugs available. Niacin (nicotinic acid) decreases plasma LDL levels most probably by inhibiting LDL production. Hepatic cholesterol synthesis is also inhibited. HDL levels are increased due to a decreased break down of HDL. The clotting protein fibrinogen is decreased and the clot buster tissue plasminogen activator is increased, both of which may be important in limiting clot formation at plaques. Side effects include vasodilation at the skin and sensation of warmth, nausea, abdominal discomfort, rashes or dry skin. Even though it is a vitamin it can have some serious side effects at cholesterol lowering dosages. Statins are currently the most powerful cholesterol lowering drugs available. They include atorvastatin, cerivastatin, fluvastatin, lovastatin, pravastatin, and simvastatin. They lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood while increasing the HDL cholesterol. HDL cholesterol is considered the good cholesterol because it transports cholesterol to the liver where it can be degraded. These drugs mainly differ in their potency, ability to lower triglycerides and cost.

Physical therapy is also available. The rehabilitation process for a atherosclerosis victim may occur in varied settings. It usually begins with a one or two week short hospitalization during which therapy begins. Inpatient admission to a rehabilitation hospital or unit may follow. This focused rehabilitation phase may average three to four weeks and might be followed with home care involving visits from home health therapists or therapies at an outpatient facility. An alternative may be short-term placement in an extended care facility with therapies not so intense as that of a rehabilitation hospital or unit.

Angioplasty is available as well. Angioplasty is a procedure for treating blockages and blood clots. The procedure involves the use of thin balloons and other devices that are threaded through a blood vessel in the groin and into a coronary artery. The balloon is inflated to squash the blockage or blood clot and stretch the artery open, restoring normal blood flow.

Lastly, bypass grafting is available as well. A coronary artery bypass graft is a surgical treatment for atherosclerosis. A surgeon takes a segment of a healthy blood vessel, either an artery or vein from another part of the body, and uses it to create a detour or bypass around the blocked portion of the coronary artery. As a result, oxygen-rich blood can flow more freely to nourish the heart muscle. A patient may undergo one, two, three or more bypasses depending on how many coronary arteries and their main branches are blocked.

People with atherosclerosis also need to alter their lifestyles. Diet, lifestyle, and environment, play vital roles in the development of atherosclerosis. Exercise and dietary changes can have a large impact on this disease process. Nutrients and herbal remedies also play an important part of any treatment regimen for atherosclerosis. The deficiencies that may be contributing, enhance associated symptoms, and influence the vessels themselves to heal and reduce plaque formation. Detoxification therapies reduce toxin load in the body, enhance vascular functioning, improve circulation, and increase oxygen and nutrient supply to tissues.

) Many fat substitutes are available. Simplesse, made by NutraSweet, is the first fat substitute approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Simplesse is made from egg white and milk protein blended and heated in a process called microparticulation, in which the protein is shaped into microscopic round particles that roll easily over one another. The aim of the process is to create the feel of a creamy liquid with the texture of fat. NutraSweet estimates that Simplesse has the potential to decrease total dietary fat consumption by Americans by 14 percent and dietary cholesterol intake by 5 percent.

Olestra is a fat-based fat substitute. Unlike the other fat substitutes, it provides zero calories. This is due to its unique configuration. Most fat substitutes imitate the molecular shape of fat, one molecule of glycerol attached to three molecules of fatty acids. With olestra, the glycerol molecule is replaced with sucrose and has six, seven or eight fatty acids attached. The fatty acids can come from a variety of vegetable oils, such as soybean, corn, palm, coconut, and cottonseed oils. The idea is that with this many fatty acids, digestive enzymes cant get to the sucrose center in the time it takes for the substance to move through the digestive tract. The sucrose center is where breakdown of the substance for absorption into the body would take place. Olestra may cause abdominal cramping and loose stools.

Saccharin is known as Sweet n Low and is the oldest artificial sweetener. In a study conducted by the National Cancer Institute during 178 and 17, it was concluded that heavy users of Saccharin, and products containing it such as diet soda, could be at an increased risk of developing bladder cancer. If you are diabetic it is wise for you to choose Saccharin over Aspartame.

Known in the world as Nutrasweet or Equal, Aspartame is the most popular artificial sweetener used. It is known to potentially cause cancer and be responsible for a wide variety of behavioral changes in humans. It can cause seizures and even death. Aspartame, is made up of three parts Aspartic Acid (40%) considered an excitotoxin that excite or stimulate the neural cells to death; Phenylalanine (50%) which can build up in the brain; and Methanol (10%) wood alcohol which is a deadly poison.

Sucralose is an artificial sweetener made from sugar. It is a chlorinated sucrose derivative. Though considered safer than aspartame or saccharin by many, it is believed that there have not been enough long-term studies done on this product, and many believe it may be just as hazardous as some of its competitors.

Reriz nestles in a deep valley high in the mountain province of the Beira Alta of northern Portugal. It is in the Paiva valley, which is more or less midway between Porto and Coimbra and about 40miles inland (if you could go directly). Porto is about an hour and half drive up the motorway, Lisbon about three hours drive. Santander is 80 miles by road which is an easy days run.

The valley floor on which the house stands grows the warm Mediterranean crops of grapes, olives and oranges. The sides of the mountains which rise to around 4,500ft are clad in pine forest while at the top they are open moorland. The village is changing rapidly as the twentieth century impinges on rural life but the province must still be one of the least developed in Europe. Where northern Portugal differs from other southern countries is in its abundant streams that keep the valleys green and fertile all year round. The beautiful river Paiva has splendid safe swimming, rapids, deep pools and sandy beaches. It is generally much better than the sea an hour and a half away at Aveiro which tends to be both rough and cold.

Northern Portugal has a mediterranean climate, modifed by being on the Atlantic. Thus summers are normally hot rising to 0°C in July and August, but a cool 15°C at night. Often little or no rain falls in the summer, but winter is usually very wet. In spring and autumn it is hot when the sun is out but it can also be showery and cool. Early spring or late autumn nights can be cold. While the winter is usually very wet, in some years no rain at all falls between April and October.

The Paiva valley is A mais desconhecida de todas as serras. The most undiscovered of all the mountain ranges - so begins the best guide-book to Portugal when describing our area (unfortunately The Discovery of Portugal has never been translated into English). It is a region of high granite mountains which, like the highlands of Scotland, are covered in a scrub of gorse, heather and broom. The mountain sides are clothed in pine forest intersected with ancient paths climbing up from hidden valley floors through which swift-flowing clear rivers run and the warm-weather crops of grapes and olives are cultivated.

Cheap University Papers on Reriz and The Paiva valley in Portugal

There are splendid walks down the valley through the forests and under arcades hanging with vines. Ones chief difficulty is avoiding the copinho (quick snifter) which the natives press on one, though there is no shortage of pubs. For those who prefer sterner walking, the mountain tracks lead for miles. Reriz is known for its flowers and there is an abundance of insect life, though happily not many mosquitoes.

Reriz is well placed as a centre from which to explore northern Portugal. To the north-west is the Minho with old towns such as Porto and Braga; to the north east is Trasos Montes with Regua (port lodges) and ancient cities like Vila Real. To the South lies the old university city of Coimbra and on the coast the fishing port of Aveiro. The nearest town is Castro Daire (8km) and the nearest city of Viseu (5km), both charming places where most amenities including shops and restaurants exist. The villages shops (one manned by English speakers) can supply daily necessities and the two pubs reasonable meals at very modest prices (often well under £5 per head for three course including wine).

There is only one other house nearby, a restored mill house, out of sight below the bridge, otherwise the nearest neighbours are about half a mile further up the valley at Griyo.

Poute Cabacos (Cabacos Bridge) is about half a mile from Reriz. On one side are the lower slopes of Montemuro which rises to a majestic 18 metres (4,500). On the other side rises up a steep hillside, covered with pine forest up to São Macario which is itself over 1000 metres. As the river Paiva winds westwards there is a ruined bridge where shepherds are often to be seen watering their flocks, much reminiscent of a classical landscape by Claude Lorraine.

In the widest part of the valley, the house is bathed in sunshine virtually all day.

The river has one of the best bathing pools in northern Portugal. Its steep rocks form natural diving boards and sandy beaches for tinies. While this can attract locals in high summer, they rarely appear before the afternoon. As the afternoon water temperature in the summer is around 0°C it provides much safer and more comfortable bathing than the sea whose nearest point is at Aveiro some 80km away. This particular spot is often used for outward-bound activities of canoeing rock climbing and abseiling. The river is famous for its trout, though these remain curiously impervious to the lure of Scottish trout flies. Barbel exist in plenty.

Leisure Life in the Portuguese villages is changing rapidly as the twenty first century catches up with this remote outpost of the European Union. But much of the traditional life of the small peasant farmer remains centred on his self-sufficient small holding, growing crops all the year round. The local speciality in the handicraft line is making baskets and the markets still sell the pottery, tin-ware and tools of the agricultural community as well as a lot of modern tat. Mixed flocks of sheep and goats are a frequent sight at the the river but few of the traditional cow-carts are still in use.

There are few leisure activities in the valley, just the swimming, and, for those who like walking, splendid tracks through the pine forests. Nature is abundant São Macario is part of the national park of forest and flowers and, as well as rare species of plants, boasts spectacular insects (though happily very few mosquitoes).

With the vast improvement to the Portuguese road network over the past few years, the Paiva valley becomes a better and better centre for exploring those parts of Portugal which are not on the beaten tourist route. A new road links (or will shortly) the local town of Castro Daire with the Douro valley making the journey to Regua where the port lodges are about half an hour away. In addition there is a new road from the nearest city of Viseu, in itself well worth a visit, that has brought Fatima and Coimbra within about twohours from Reriz. Even Lisbon is now only about three hours drive including the historic towns north of the city such as Batalha, Alcobaça and Nazar.

Traveling to places where you have never gone is very exciting. Life itself can be described in terms of a journey. There are pitfalls along the way that one must learn to avoid, dangers that must be talked about and exciting new things to learned. One of the ways authors talk about a journey is in a travel writing. Jonathon Swift and Wu Ch'eng-en used the travel writing to tell two different types of stories. The characterization of the minor character's of the Yahoo's and Pigsy in their respective stories, are similar in their view of how passions need to be controlled but very different in their reasons of why such passions are bad.

During the Enlightenment in Europe people were taught that the body is controlled by two opposite forces passion and reason. Reason was employed to control the rashness of passion. Jean-Baptiste Moliere believed that one should try to moderate his or her passions so they don't take over one's life Hugo 5. People consider passion as very worldly. It shows an emphasis on our lives and the world around us. It screams, This is important! Passion is powerful. We use it for emotions that are based on value-judgments. Whether its love or hate, joy or anger, we experience it in response to what is important in our lives. Reason tempered the hot emotions of passion. People devoid of this tempering quality were thought to be on a spiraling path down. The Eastern cultures also had a similar point of view of on the idea of passion. The Buddhist religion teaches that passions must be controlled to achieve true nirvana.

In Gullivers Travels the reader is taught about the danger of uncontrolled passion. This passion is represented by the actions of the Yahoos. Presented to us as an uncivilized bunch, they have nothing even resembling reason. Yahoo's choose their leaders from the most uncouth and deformed. Whenever they feel the need they have sex or lounge in the dirt and mud. Their passions make them worse than animals. Even the word yahoo in the Houyhnhnm language even means ill quality Swift 470.

In Monkey uncontrolled passion can not only make one worse than animals but also has the power to reduce the character to a animal state. Passions seem to turn the character Pigsy into less than human. His character flaw makes him grow ugly. "...His nose began to turn into a regular snout, his ears became larger and larger, and great bristles began to grow at the back of his neck" Ch'eng-en 1. Pigsy like his name suggests resembles a pig. His greediness has caused him to take the form of a animal. Pigsy's main interest is in satisfying his lusts. He symbolizes the physical appetites, brute strength, and lack of patience. When he becomes a priest it is because he must, not because he wants to. "For if we don't bring off this scripture business, I shall turn layman again and live with you as your son-in-law"Ch'eng-en 7.

The purpose the two author's had for creating their minor character's are very different from each other. Swift's Yahoo's were used for a political purpose. Swift wanted to show the wrongness that prevailed in the English government. In the story Gulliver explains to his master about the English government and other governments in the same vicinity. He describes at length the practice of law, who can be considered as nobility, the realities of war and other human actions. "I endeavored to give him some ideas of the desire of power and riches; of the terrible effects of lust, intemperance, malice, and envy"Swift 451. Because of his narration, Gulliver slowly comes to the realization that the Yahoo's were almost the same as the people he came from. He can see that he is all too easily controlled by passion and not very well by reason. "I could no longer deny that I was a real Yahoo, in every limb and feature" Swift 465. This satire filled discourse helps the author show what he feels is wrong with the world he lives in.

Wu Ch'eng-en did not use politics as his purpose, instead he wanted to show a religious point of view. Buddhism has respect for all things alive. There are a hierarchy of alive things from insects to Buddhas. All creatures human and beasts have good seeds and bad seeds within them, the whole goal of life is to cultivate the good seeds in order to acquire a higher level in the next life. Buddhism believes in Karma. This is the belief that what you do will come back at you, good or bad. The Second Enlightenment of Buddhism teaches that excessive desire begets suffering. The suffering of birth and death as well as the leading of a weary life are all caused by greed. Few desires along with no craving make our mind and body comfortablePrince. Pigsy is used as a example of the way one should not be. Pigsy's constant love of money and worldly possessions is not fitting of a Buddhist monk. His love of money allows him to be tricked and fooled. "'If I steal a treasure... I expect more than a petty, skunking share. The treasure must be mine'"Ch'eng-en 56.

Passions in Monkey and Gulliver's Travel's are portrayed both in a similar way and yet different. In the two travel writings, even the minor characters are alive with the currents of passion. Through these stories we are shown that passions have the power to reduce the humanness in one's self. They prove to us that it is better to control one's passions and use reason when possible. However the reason for one to do for so is disputed. The reader is delighted with the characterization of the Yahoo's and Pigsy what ever the reason. Works Cited

It is mans nature to make sense of the vast, diverse reality we are in. We need to understand the essence of every moment we experience, every person we communicate with. We philosophize and strive to find truth and meaning from this wild whirling world that supports our existence. And from this stems how we perceive ourselves and others to beour personality, our identity.

A huge part of this wild whirling world is our media culture. Its omnipresence provides a world in itself, an environment from which we humans draw the materials to form our identity and means of channeling self-expression. Media has become such a big part of our reality that for many, the difference between fantasy and real life has been blurred (Reyes, 18). No doubt about it, media has seeped through our everyday living. Slowly, insidiously, it has given us access to everything, anytime causing moral paranoia all over due to the fact that suddenly it is difficult to distinguish the boundaries between morality and the aesthetic license.

The causal effect of television violence on aggression, even though it is not very large, exists (Eron, 1). Television, among other forms of technology such as video games and cinema, mediates violence and makes it seem more immediate, exposing viewers to levels and forms of violence they might never otherwise encounter (Bok, 18) The emergence of virtual reality enables a player to feel the excitement of a real killing. On the other hand, it may serve as a channel for aggression. The player may not foster such seething personal hatred for the enemy on screen. To him the main goal is simply to attain the highest score possible. Killing off people like in Duke Nukem or Doom or Counterstrike may have the same mechanics and achieve similar satisfaction as a wholesome pop-as-much-ballons-as-you-can-with-a-dart game at the carnival. One technology is simply more of an aggressive nature than the other. On one hand, aggressive kids get a healthy channel for their aggression, on the other, media violence may serve as a trigger for that aggression. Whatever level or type, for whatever reason it is patronized, technology has aided in the pervasiveness of media adding to its power of influence.

From here, social paranoia grows and many have debated over whether just how strong the influence of media in human existence is. We theorize to find if violence in society is truly a product of media and we work to find the interconnectedness between its tools of expression and our way of life (Notes in class, 00). Should violence in media be censored?

Theories

The Diffusion Theory seems to dilute the paranoia of censorship. According to this theory, an idea (the message) has to go through a lot of other materials and factors that sizably affect the public's process of discerning (Notes in class, 00). This makes media not as powerful as how the hypodermic need le effect portrays it to be. Other agents in the viewers' environment mediate the flow of the message and obviously color it to mould the viewers' moral character. These may be, among countless others, education, exposure from living quarters, religiosity, the types of people we interact with and events we witness. The viewers' process of decision making, according to Diffusion, would be highly affected by culture and upbringing.

If one were to defend the issue of censorship, this then would be contradicting. This is because it precisely states that violence in media is only one of many factors that can bring about aggressive behavior from human beings.

It is in this context that censoring violence in our country is not necessary. Although, I find that it is a more pressing concern that the type of audiences watching it must be closely monitored and regulated. Violent media content should go hand in hand with proper guidance from authoritieswho should watch who.

Another good theory to support anti-censorship matters is the Uses and Gratification. According this theory, children, adults, Filipinos, black people, human beings of all sorts do what they want with media and not so much the other way round. This largely mutes the influences of media on the public, although it cannot be denied that there will always be, to some extent, some amount of influence. There seems to exist a vicious cycle where media violence makes children more aggressive and these aggressive children turn to watching (or for video games, "take part" in) more and more violence to justify their own behavior (Eron, 1). But again needs are met depending on what social context one is coming from.

Violent action flicks and the Philippine Society

In the Philippines, violence is not as much a source of heated debate as films with explicit sexual representation. Recall the bruhaha that came about when The Piano or Schindlers list was to be shown in Philippine theaters. On the contrary, when Saving Private Ryan or Bad Boys II came out with all its fabulous gore, we barely heard a peep. We hear a lot of rape cases that start with the viewing of a porno film. None yet about murder sprees by a bunch of juveniles after watching big bellied Eddie Garcia romp his weight around in Sisimba Ka Na May Bulak sa Ilong. The truth about it is, perhaps our violent films are not violent enough to spark anything as dramatic as, say, the Columbian Massacre. It does not seem to be much of a threat. On the other hand, these types of films do hold significant statements of our Filipino culture and humanity. It may reveal our warped perceptions on what the ideal isour heroes are renegades and our women are mere sex icons that do their bidding. In a way these films do become a threat as they create false ideals of what is the macho norm in society, cultivating cases of wife-beating, rape and other such things.

Coming out of the Philippine scene, we could take a look at the film, City of God, for another example. Its cast is made up of real people who actually lived in such a hellish violent world. The reality of their performance effectively pulled audiences into their bloody universe. This is what makes City of God a socially revealing and shocking film. Violence is a social reality. And violent films, though larger than life, reflect our type of culture and society. If it takes an orgy of blood, exploding heads and flying torsos to shock audiences into realizing the value and dignity of human existence, then so be it.
