In general, I believe that death is something none of us want. In fact, it is something we don't even like to talk about. When death takes place naturally, it is a process beyond our control to stop, but when death is willfully and deliberately brought about, it is very unfortunate.

Mark Costanzo believes that lethal injection is probably the most in-humane way of killing prisoners. Costanzo states that he is opposed to the death penalty in all of it's forms, no matter how awful the crime or how savage the criminal. The death penalty to me gives us as a society absolutely no answer. We kill the person, never allowing them the chance to speak to someone on why they did what they did which leaves us all in question.

Costanzo contends that it is time for this country to reconsider the costs and consequences of the death penalty. He also considers whether the death penalty is cheaper than life imprisonment, is fairly applied, or is a deterrent to potential murderers.

Mark Costanzo states that a man lying face up on a hospital gurney is subjected to what looks like a routine medical procedure. The only difference is that the goal is to kill instead of heal… Even more important from the perspective of politicians and proponents of the death penalty Costanzo believes that lethal injection is the method least likely to arouse doubts or revulsion in the monds of the public. Mark Costanzo also believes that the new technology will anesthetize the public conscience along with the condemned man. In most states with the death penalty, the only alternative punishment under current law is life imprisonment without the possibility of parole (LWOP). Roughly half the American public prefers life without parole, while half prefers the death penalty. But there is another alternative to capital punishment, one that garners the support of a clear majority of Americans life without the possibility of parole plus restitution, which includes a requirement that all or part of what the convicted murderer earns from prison labor goes into a victims' support fund or is paid to the murder victim's survivors. In every state where life without parole plus restitution is offered as an alternative to the death penalty, a majority of the American people say they would prefer that rather than the death penalty. I would strongly agree with Mark Costanzo on this issue. I believe that this method is more human and humanistic than the death penalty.

Write your Capital Punishment research paper

One of my arguments against the death penalty is because I believe that the sentence of capital punishment is an expensive barbaric alternative for punishing our criminals. Murder is unaccepted by our society, but yet people seem to pacify themselves by killing criminals. When you sentence a criminal to death it does not solve the questions and problems that are left behind. Mourning families will still carry a never ending heartache, and the criminal no longer has to pay for the consequences of their actions. The only people left to pay are the tax payers. This is why I agree very strongly with Mark Costanzo.

Overall, my views are very similar to Mark Costanzo's. He states that capital punishment is unfair, barbaric, and unjustified retribution. Costanzo also believes that capital punishment is cruel and unusual, which is true to me. It's cruel because it is a relic of the earliest days of penology when slavery was a commonplace. But it is the 1st century and there is no slavery, and there should be no capital punishment. Like slavery, executions have no place in a civilized society who respects life. To me a society who respects life does not deliberately kill human beings.

The Call Of The Bush

The poem I have chosen is titled "The Call of The Bush" that is written by Dora Wilcox. The subject/ story of this poem is about the poet/writer being in the outback without anything but the horizon in front of her. The main emotions expressed in this poem are happiness, relaxation and peace. The poet has used the following poetic devises to create a clear picture in the mind of the reader. These help to convey the message and include lines one and two rhyme, lines three and four rhyme and descriptive language in the verses. Aspects of the Australian National Identity that are addressed in this poem include she-oak, gum trees and bush. I believe that this is an accurate representation of our national identity because it tells the reader a lot about the out back and how peaceful calm the outback can be if you just sit back and take notice. The view being expressed by the writer is very positive because she talks a lot about how wonderful the outback is and how she prefers it to the city.

There's Only The Two Of Us Here

The poem I have chosen is titled "There's Only The Two Of Us Here" that is written by Edward Harrington. The subject/ story of this poem is about the poet camping one night on the side of a lonely hill in a empty hut. The main emotions expressed in this poem are coldness, loneliness and sacredness. The poet has used the following poetic devises to create a clear picture in the mind of the reader. These help to convey the message and include The last word of the first and second line rhyme (this continues throughout the poem), descriptive verses, many emotions being felt and similes. Aspects of the Australian National Identity that are addressed in this poem include boiled me billy, huts, and old slab shed. I believe that this is an accurate yet non-accurate representation of our national identity because many years ago this is how most Australians lived, but not many people live like that now. The view being expressed by the writer is a bit of both because at some stages in the poem the writer is being very positive, and at other times he is being negative.

Give Me A Home Among The Gumtrees

The song I have chosen is "Give Me A Home Among The Gumtrees" that is written by Bob Brown/ Wally Johnson. The subject/ story of this song is where the poet lives, where people live, what their home looks like with all the different types of animals that live around the home, where the home is located, what types of food are found and eaten in the kitchen, and also what sort of plants surround the home. The main emotions expressed in this poem are happy, he expresses the outback as a laid back area, he also expresses love, and positive remarks. The poet has used the following poetic devises to create a clear picture in the mind of the reader. These help to convey the message and include end rhyme three lines that that all end in the same sound, internal rhymes "sights" and "delights", "a sheep or two and a kangaroo", personification- "kookaburra's singing" and "possums playing", Onomatopoeia in the actual song there is a kookaburra's call. Aspects of the Australian National Identity that are addressed in this song include Gumtrees, possum, veranda, rocking chair, kangaroo, agriculture, fruit trees in the backyard, veggie patch, style of home. I believe that this is an accurate representation of our National Identity because this is how some or more of Australians live and how Australians used to live. These things are also found in Australia no matter where you go. The view being expressed by the writer is very positive because he loves the outback and this is how he wants other people to view Australia.

Please note that this sample paper on Australian Poetry is for your review only. Issue: Actual event with University name changed!

Northern University was granted a license for a public radio station with specific goals. The radio station did not succeed where the specific goals were concerned. There were no written specific job descriptions or feedback system for volunteer performance and the Director was not qualified enough to develop one.

When the university was granted a license for a public radio station, the goals were clear. One goal was to provide quality noncommercial broadcasting emphasizing local and national news as well as some music. Not enough funds were available to provide employment for a professional staff. Therefore, they were to temporarily recruit volunteer students and faculty members until such funds could be offered. This would also develop professional announcers. The problem with this was the lack of written job descriptions. There was also a problem with the Organizational Structure of the Station. These issues need to be addressed and repaired to succeed. The university radio station offered few full- time paid positions that were not well developed for the radio station requirements. The students volunteered to get training and experience to help them shift into media careers. The faculty members volunteered to gain new experiences or because they enjoyed certain kinds of music. The program Director had to many responsibilities and not enough experience and knowledge to do the job correctly. The radio station also recruited many volunteers to perform different duties and job descriptions than they were to fulfill. The Program Director should not have been in charge of so many tasks that he was not good at doing or was not experienced in. His leadership style was not volunteer- oriented and he was not skilled in managing others. This caused conflicts within the organization. The position was open for nine months. When the new Director was hired, he worked to many hours, did not train any new volunteers, and had demoted or made old volunteers quit. The General Manager was confronted by the volunteers about the problems and stated that he gave the Program Director, who was already overwhelmed with duties, the responsibility of dealing with personnel matters. Most volunteers like to be rewarded in many ways. Some of these rewards are the feeling of being needed, to gain skills and recognition, explore a career, volunteer for a challenge, gain status and many more. There is even a tax credit for many volunteering costs in the United States. However, The radio station at the university did not make the volunteers feel needed at all nor did they seem to appreciate the efforts of the volunteers. Some of the volunteers were under the impression they would become announcers in the future. Instead, they were working as board operators behind the scenes. There was not any support or incentives for the volunteers to continue working at the station.

To avoid a crisis situation Northern University's Radio Station needs to first develop a plan of action by evaluating the goals and obstacles. The Dean, along with the General Manager, News Director, Program Director, Administrative Assistant and Engineer need to conduct a meeting and develop their plan and implementing it to control and fortify a structured workplace. This will lead to more disciplined duties and positions. Having a well sought out and developed organization through the accurate leadership will prosper and hopefully then obtain the desired goals.

Citizen Kane employs a combination of cinematic techniques that makes it worthy as a contender for best movie ever made. To study these visionary techniques it is necessary to break down the movie in order to understand how it was that Welles did such innovative film making. One interesting formula used in the movie is thematic montage. This effective editing procedure condenses ideas and symbols that occurred over a number of years in the character's life into one sequence that tells all. The most famous example of thematic montage in Citizen Kane compresses an entire marriage into a swift montage of breakfast table scenes. This scene shows us the downfall of a marriage within a few minutes. Other such montages can be found in the movie and these scenes help to create the overall cinematic success that is Citizen Kane.

The very beginning of the movie gives us the kind of central character we are immediately interested in. Given Welles opening newsreel montage, Kane is interesting simply because he has to be. No one who led such a life could possibly have been boring; he was a powerful man who lost everything, and that fascinates us for the same reason it fascinates the reporters in the film; we dont understand how it could have happened, how Kane could have fallen so far. This thematic montage is cleverly disguised as a newsreel, making it less obvious then some of the other montages. In this short amount of time, we learn who Kane is in terms of his public life; without the montage the entire movie would be altered unmistakably because we would not already know that Kane will fall. Even with this information, we must watch the movie to find out what Kane's tragic flaw could possibly be. A man who could create Xandu and affect the nation in such a tremendous way; we want to now how he lost everything. This thematic montage of Kane's life gives premise to the movie and draws viewers into Welles' world.

From the very first public instant, when Kane took control of The Inquirer, Kane was a man to arouse strong emotion. His concentration was focused on writing news that helped the working man. All of this is made clear in one short thematic montage in which Thatcher, his former guardian, reads the headlines of The Inquirer. Thatcher's reactions begin with surprise, going through the range to outrage. Knowing that Thatcher is a man focused on money, we learn that Kane has chosen a different route in life. This montage illustrates not just the philosophy of The Inquirer, but also his feelings toward the man who brought him up. This is a real way to show the defiance of Kane to Thatcher and the life he is expected to have.

These thematic montages are an influential way to give insight into Kane without actually having someone say it. From the first scene we learn who Kane is and what happened to him in life; we learn all we need to know about Kane to understand that he is rich, eccentric, and has lost everything by the time he dies. In the Thatcher montage we learn Kane's politics. These montages give us a background so in depth, we can abandon the shallow surface of the movie and search for deeper meaning in the film. These scenes are also visually stimulating in their fast nature, adding to the overall aesthetic affect of the movie. The condensation of information in the thematic montages of Citizen Kane give necessary information in an interesting way, another cinematic technique that Welles makes his own in this masterpiece.

When Simple Is Not So Simple

Thesis Statement Simple words and observations can mean totally different things to two people.

Some people argue that there is too much language and the meaning could be bought about more quickly. In support on this idea, Ernest Hemingway tells a wonderful short story, Hills Like White Elephants, using simple words and observations. The symbolism and the deeper conflict of the tale start at the very beginning with the arrival of the couple at the train station and their first words to each other.

It is hot which already is not helping the characters' tempers. The only cool oasis is the bar that sits between two lines of rail. By describing the landscape through the female character Jig's eyes, Hemingway is already setting the mind in motion. The track neatly bisects the Ebro valley into two sides. One side is the fertile, green side with a river, fields of grain, and trees. The other side is the barren side with dry and brown fields and no trees. This contrasting landscape symbolizes the decision Jig has to make to keep the baby or not. The rails dividing the landscapes are seemingly giving Jig her two choices.

The free spirited lifestyle that they have lead is one choice. She can choose to have the abortion and keep going to new cities and hotels to look at new things and try new drinks. She is working on his sympathy when she asks to try the Anis del Toro. The taste reminds her of absinthe, a hallucinogenic drink outlawed in most of Europe and the United States. She also says it to remind him of the better and more carefree times that they have enjoyed.

Jig knows that if she keeps the baby that the American will leave. She still cannot decide whether to keep the child or not. Jig says that the hills look like white elephants to her. In her mind, white elephants are something precious and to be revered like the sacred white elephants of Burma and India. To the American who is never named, however, the term "white elephant" means something not wanted or useless, a truly American definition. The American thinks this baby will intrude on his current lifestyle.

As they have their drinks, she reaches out and takes hold of two strands of the bead curtain with the Anis del Toro logo painted on it. She is trying to decide on the two choices she had to make. The choices are she and the baby or she and the American. As she stands to look into the valley that is fertile, she steps into the sun and states, "And we could have all this". The American says, "We can have all this". She knows that the love/lust will die when the baby dies. The American will go away because as in her words, "once it is gone, you can never get it back". He answers by telling her to come back into the shade and to not feel that way.

When the American carries the bags through the station, she is sure the relationship is over and has made her decision. He is still trying to convince her of the abortion. He stops at the bar for another drink of Anis and stares at the reasonable people waiting for the train before he rejoins her at their table.

Throughout the story, the conversation and the observations are simple and seemingly straightforward. Even the focal point of the story is called "a simple operation" and never referred to as an abortion, which is a much more emotionally charged word. The reader uncovers the real story by interpreting the symbolization behind the simple words and observations.

As part of my health and wellness plan for lecture I had to submit a w.h.i.p. contract where I stated contractually some type of lifestyle altering thing I was going to do during this quarter. I chose to submit a contract where I would cut back considerably if not completely my habit of cigarettes. Because of this I thought I would look into some of the statistics and affects smoking has in order to reinforce my conviction that it is time to stop smoking.

This year alone "cigarettes will kill over 40,000 Americans"(American Heart Association), and many more will suffer from cancers, and circulatory and respiratory system diseases, and this number is on the rise. These horrible illnesses were known to originate from cigarettes for years, and recently the Food and Drug Administration declared nicotine, the main chemical additive in cigarettes, addictive. This explains why smokers continue to use cigarettes even though smokers are aware of, and constantly warned about health dangers in cigarettes. Although smokers constitute the majority of people who suffer from cigarettes, they are not the only ones ailing from cigarette smoke. In addition to smokers, the "amount of second-hand smoke inhaled by the typical nonsmoker is equivalent to one cigarette smoked per day"(NHMRC). Even that amount of cigarette smoke can damage a person's heart. Some researchers have also concluded that "smoking by pregnant women causes the deaths of over 5,000 babies and 115,000 miscarriages"(NHMRC). The only way to terminate the suffering and loss of life brought upon by cigarettes is to, not smoke.

For years cigarettes have been known to cause cancer, emphysema, and other horrible illnesses. With all the other causes of preventable deaths such as, alcohol, illegal drugs, aids, suicide, transportation accidents, fires, and guns, cigarettes still account for more preventable deaths than those do combined. Thousands of smokers try to rid themselves of cigarettes but can't because of the physiological dependence they develop, chiefly imputable to its chemical additive nicotine. Although cigarettes do not offer as intense an effect as drugs like heroin and cocaine, "they rank higher in the level of dependence it creates in the user"(AHA). Although technology to remove nicotine from cigarettes was developed years ago cigarette manufacturers shun it. Instead interestingly enough, they control with precision the amount of nicotine in their products.

Cigarette smokers affect the health of tens of thousands of nonsmoking Americans a year. Of those who do not smoke 5,000 will die and countless others will suffer from cardiovascular diseases as reported by the American Heart Association. One-way cigarettes affect the body in both smokers and non-smokers is by reducing the body's ability to deliver oxygen to the heart because the carbon monoxide produced by the cigarettes competes with the oxygen for binding sites on red blood cells. Therefore, it increases the amount of lactate--a salt derived from lactic acid-- in blood, making it more difficult to exercise, it activates blood platelets, the cells which cause cuts to form scabs, causing blood clots in the arteries, and it irritates tissue damage after a heart attack.

There are so many strong factors in this film that describe the conditions of the time. I think the strongest qualities of this film included the opening scene of sheep herds representing the flocks of workers flooding into the factory to begin their work day. The president of the Company is also a strong role in the film's pursuit to stress the message of how upper management can make or break you in desperate times. It also conveys the message that the factory worker is being watched all the time as portrayed by the President's two way tv screen that monitors the workers. The assembly line scenes represent the main object of work in the factories, hard and constant labor on a endless series of machine parts. The beaten up shack that Charlie and his girlfriend lived in is also another good example of how a lot of people lived at the time.

This film relates to the time period by displaying the struggle of the industrial workers and the demand for work. A prime example of the desperate times that they were in is displayed by the girl stealing the bananas to feed her family. Another very obvious element that relates to the time period is the factory, the film displays the work setting with humongous machinery and large quantities of workers. The factory also expresses the economic trends of the time, where one factory owner would be rich and cut the working conditions and pay of the factory workers to gain their own personal wealth. The only thing I think they could have done better with the factory set was to make it look dirty and crowded like many of the factories at the time. The jails were pretty right on the mark with the time setting. Since so many people had no place else to go they would commit crimes to get in jail and have square meals a day and a roof over their head. The accusation that Charlie was a communist is also a great example of the times. Everyone was so paranoid over communist spies during the early stages of the cold war, so basically anyone was a prime suspect. Chaplin's yearning to create quality work drove him over the edge, you could see how society's views changed from the begging of the film to the end. The economic situation went from having everything to nothing, they were forced to start new.

If I had to relate this movie to a piece of art work from class I'd say it would be Diego Rivera's Detroit Industry's north wall mural. I'd choose this just because it embodies the pure raw elements of the factory worker and man. This mural displays factory workers wearing the same uniforms as Chaplin did and just gives the viewer a good sense of what factory life is all about. The towering machines and assembly line in the factory are excellent examples. Although Rivera's mural has a sense of harmony and peacefulness to it, unlike Chaplin's screwball antics, it still relates to the movie greatly

This film gave me a increased understanding of the impact that the industrial revolution left, and how it was a huge role in society. The industrial revolution changed everything, from the quality of life for people to the influence on artists and filmmakers. It was such a important change that almost every aspect in "Modern Times" is represented by the age of industrialism, from the work that people did down to the clothes that people wore. The post industrial rev. time period also influenced art as represented by works from Charles Sheeler, Francis Picabia, and Gerald Murphy.
