Introduction

Custom Essays on cloning the way to go

I. What if you could give parents a chance to have a baby that would otherwise be impossible, or end starvation, save an endangered species, or even create independent organs from a single cell to help a diseased person, cloning could make those ideas possible

A. Although cloning has been a hot topic in the last four years or so, forms of cloning have existed for nearly half a century.

II. I will attempt to persuade you that cloning and its forms are very important for the future.

Body

I. The history of cloning began long ago, but has only come to the worlds eye in the last few years.

A. Contrary to what most think cloning has been around for almost half a century.

1. In 15 the first successful cloning experiment took place when scientists for Cancer Research in Philadelphia cloned a frog tadpole using a nucleus of the frogs embryo.

. Then in 16 John Gurdon of Cambridge University was the first to clone toads using a nucleus of a tadpoles intestinal cell, which survived into adulthood and reproduced.

. Later in 181 Steen Willadsen of Cambridge combined sheep and goat embryos to create the first artificial animal, which they named a geep, which has the body and shape of a goat but with sheeps wool.

4. In 186 Willadsen transplanted the embryonic nuclei from cattle and produced the first cloned calves.

5. Then in 187 James Robl of the University of Massachusetts was the first to clone rabbits.

B. In the recent years scientists have produced clones of more complex animals all over the world.

1. About 4 years ago the cloned sheep Dolly made headlines across the globe, which lead to an outbreak of many more experiments.

. The next big success came when experiments at Oregon Health Sciences University produced the first cloned primate, a monkey named Tetra.

. Even more recently the creators of Dolly produced 5 piglets. These pigs raise hopes for transplants.

II. Cloning humans and animals could change the way the world works and thinks.

A. For many couples having trouble having children cloning would be a good alternative.

1. Although for most people, cloning themselves would be a last chance to have a child.

. It could be a couple having problems getting pregnant or a single person wanting to leave something before they die.

B. With recent successes of cloning, endangered species could become a thing of the past.

1. If it is possible to clone sheep, rabbits, frogs, and monkeys what is stopping us from producing endangered species like rhinos and tigers.

. And back in 16 they were able to make a clone that was able to reproduce they would only have to make a few animals and let them loose.

. Steps further than that would be to bring back already extinct animals, in a sort of Jurassic Park way.

4. Recently, a wooly mammoth was discovered with fur and all, so they could possibly retrieve the DNA from that and create a once extinct species.

C. Another way cloning could improve the world is through the food supply.

1. Once cloning has been perfected it could be possible to create massive amounts of cows or pigs.

. These animals could be used to drive food prices way down and to feed starving countries.

. This may seem a bit drastic, but it is not too different from breeding pigs on farms that would simply meet the butcher.

III. Some scientists believe that creating humans organs for medical uses would be unethical.

A. A group of Japanese scientists were able to create independent body parts of animals.

1. The most famous example of this is in Japan where scientists were able to create independent frogeyes and ears.

. This would be great for transplants for diseased or injured body organs, and this is what the Japanese scientists did.

. They created a frog kidney and successfully transplanted it into a frog.

B. The ability to create organs on demand would be revolutionary for the medical field.

1. This would make it possible for the replication of any organ for use.

. It could turn life-threatening diseases into simple annoyances.

. Once you found out you are sick you can go in and get the transplant.

4. For example if you find out you have liver cancer then they could take uninfected cells, let them grow then do the transplant.

5. This is a much better choice than waiting on the grim hope of somebody else dying.

Conclusion

I. In conclusion, cloning is becoming more and more valid of a choice for many things.

II. You can feed people easily, help couples have a baby, save endangered species, or create transplants.

III. So someday you may have your life elongated due to the one of the many forms of cloning.

There has never been a flat tire, a red rose or a work of art.

Until now.

Interviewer (facing camera) Goodmorning and welcome to "Today's Movies." I am here with Gary Ross, director of the latest film "Pleasantville." (Turns to Gary)

Gary Ross (waves to crowd) Thankyou.

Interviewer So, Gary, for the audience that has not yet viewed the film. What is it about?

Gary Ross "Pleasantville" is a movie about two different worlds and how they collide. In the modern world, David, played by Tobey Maguire, is a Nineties kid with a Fifties addiction, he likes to watch a television show, Pleasantville. While fighting with his egocentric and promiscuous sister, Jennifer, they get transported into this Utopia that David has always yearned for. Although upon arrival they discover that maybe Pleasantville isn't as perfect as it first seems. The movie observes that sometimes pleasant people are pleasant simply because they have never, ever been challenged.

Interviewer Fascinating! I've seen it and I definitely recommend it to the viewers. (Pause) I believe 'Pleasantville' focuses on a change in perspective. How did you show this change in the film?

Gary Ross The most obvious technique we used to convey a change in perspective was colour. The black and white world suggested that the characters there were not seeing the complexities or shades of life. The black and white colours of Pleasantville showed conformity and dullness. While the colour in the contemporary world symbolised that there were lots of ways of 'seeing' with shades of understanding. When these two worlds collide we used colour to symbolise certain meanings. The first character to witness a change was Skip, Mary Sue's boyfriend. On return from Lovers Lane he notices a red rose which we used to symbolise romance and from there colour started appearing everyone. We used colour to suggest that a character had engaged somehow emotionally in life.

Each character experienced a change of some sort because they acknowledged new and emotions and new knowledge.

Interviewer What characters are the strongest in demonstrating the idea of a changed perspective?

Gary Ross There are three characters that are vital in conveying the theme of changing perspectives. These were David/Bud, Jennifer/Mary Sue and the mother, Betty. At first David is against change although as he realises how naïve these people are he becomes the catalyst of change. Although, for the majority of the film he does not change himself, until the end. He shows courage by standing up for Betty, this is something he never had the nerve to do before, so this is a change in Bud. The character of Jennifer is at first very self and social orientated, she rides "rough shod", trampling on the values and ideals of others. Although in Pleasantville because of the abolishment of social pressures she begins to immerse herself in other activities, especially reading and therefore changes her previous attitude. Betty has also conformed to the stereotypical housewife of the 150's. She experiences a sensual awakening and with Bud's influence and society's changing attitudes Betty realises that she doesn't have to be what others want her to be. She stands up and faces her husband and faces society. But as I said, all characters experience a change in perspective, these three characters just convey it the most.

Interviewer What is the overall meaning of the film?

Gary Ross Hmmm well I suppose there are many meanings. I believe the most important is that perhaps not everything is always as it seems, I mean nothing is as simple as black and white is it? David viewed Pleasantville as an escape from his less than perfect life. With its white picket fences, wholesome family values, and stability, Pleasantville is seemed a much more civilised alternative to the real worlds economic upheaval, environmental turmoil, single-parent families, and bleak prospects for the future. As the film progresses, though, David realises that the people of Pleasantville are infact very sheltered, they don't know about the outside world, nor do even question the perfection of their own world. David discovers that no life is perfect, not even the lives in Pleasantville and he learns to accept his real life, the way it is.

Interviewer Wow! "Pleasantville" is an amazingly powerful movie. If you haven't seen it yet, please do. (turns to Gary) Congratulations on the film, Gary, it's a real success and thankyou for coming in today.

Gary Ross No problem, thankyou for inviting me (laughs).

1"If Rome be weak, where shall strength be found?" A unique quote which Dr. Radlisch, a Roman History professor based his teachings around until a Vandal confronted him. A young lady in one of his classes named Amy Buleric confronted him and made him question his reasons for thinking and teaching the way he did. She made his once satisfying quote unsatisfying. She made him thirst for the truth; from what he used to think was the truth. Dr. Radlisch decided to give Amy a decent mark when she did not even do the final paper, he reacted with dignity when Amy accused him of telling lies, Amy's interpretation of Roman history made Dr. Radlisch question what he had believed in for so long and Amy had no reason for taking a Roman history course to begin with.

Amy Buleric decided it was necessary for her to take Dr. Radlisch's Roman History class when she firmly believed what she would be taught would be a lie because of her personal knowledge of the Vandals is because she may well have wanted to learn what was being taught about the Vandals to young enthused historians to be, and what would then be passed on to the following generations until someone spoke up and did something about it. It could of quite possibly been that she did indeed want to learn about Roman history, but not when it came to hearing that her own tribe (the Vandals) sacked Rome when she was taught that the Vandals liberated Rome. Her former knowledge of the Vandals and Romans came from the traditional Vandal way of passing events verbally and not writing them down like many other civilizations.

Dr. Radlisch reacts when one of his students comes to visit him under false pretences of coming in and explaining her recent absences but rather accuse him of lying, by first being frustrated with not being able to figure out where Amy is going with her conversation with him. "I thought we were here to discuss your absences, any problems you've been having." Shows that he cares that she decided to come to him, but is absentminded of why she came. After this he begins to see the bigger picture of why she is here, the fact that she is a Vandal, and that she does not appreciate hearing that her people sacked Rome when she had always been taught that they liberated it. The only prior knowledge Dr. Radlisch had to contest that the Vandals had sacked Rome was the word of the Romans, for the reason that the Vandals do not believe in writing anything down. Which leads into the final reason why she came to his office, the final paper, which she could not do due to her background as a Vandal that was on "Lies are the province of Romans and writers."

The quote 1"If Rome be weak, where shall strength be found" which was hung in Dr. Radlisch's office seemed to bring him inner peace when related to Roman history which he knew tremendously well, but is what he thought he knew well really the whole picture, or just one side of the story. After hearing what Amy having to say about the Vandals liberating Rome, Dr. Radlisch began to second-guess his opinion of this quote, because he what she said was factual, subsequently Rome was once weak. This all leads to Dr. Radlisch questioning, " 'Where shall strength be found?' How was I going to learn the new ways?" This left him feeling unfulfilled with a quote which once satisfied him with an answer and a way to teach by.

Write my Essay on Something of the something or other.

The unique way the professor took on determining Amy's mark after she quit coming to class, did not writing the final paper, and accused him of lying to all his students about the Vandals in Roman history. After being that Amy had not withdrawn totally from his course but rather just chose not to come to class anymore or do the final paper, he had to determine a mark for her. She didn't deserve an 'A' for not writing the final paper and not showing up for class, but she also knew her history, so she did not deserve to be flunked, Dr. Radlisch settled on a B for her mark in his course. He weighed the pros. and cons. of her situation, and figured that this would be the best thing for the both of them.

Professor Radlisch is a man of values, a man of integrity, and most of all a man of honor. Even though he was accused of lying by a twenty year old, he still had the manners to hear out what she had to say where other people would of just blown her off. He not only listened, but he interpreted and processed what she said, he acknowledged that she knew, or believed with passion that she knew what she was talking about and he understood that.

Dont got one.

Opening sequence the film starts with a helicopter shot looking over "white suburbia" a nice neighborhood and in a nice suburb. Then we move to a shot of Lester played by Kevin Spacey in the shower masturbating describing this as the most exciting part of his day. This then highlights Lester's sexual frustration a married father who hasn't had sex in a while with his wife Carolyn played by Annette Bening who appears to be more concerned about her house as well as her appearance of marital bliss. "In order to be successful one must project a image of Success" a statement to which we later we learn is the basis to Carolyn's existence. Placing her value on status and could be best described as a "bloodless, money grubbing freak" who in her mission to achieve her so called success has shielded herself from intimacy.

Lester's body language suggests that life has become a drag for him. Its almost as if it's a mission for him to get up in the morning as he later says "Both my wife and daughter think im a gigantic loser and there right I have lost something and I didn't always feel this sedated. This is supported by the high and low angle shots between Lester and Carolyn when Carolyn appears to be in control and Lester not. High angle shots to suggest that Carolyn is in control of this relationship and low angle at Lester suggesting he is far less superior to her. "Our marriage is just a show- a commercial for how normal we are, when we are when we are anything but. A thought expressed by Lester

Cheap University Papers on American beauty essay how does Sam Mendez establish the relationship between the members of the burnham family in the opening sequence and the first dinner table sequence?

We also then see Lester slumped in the back of the car suggesting that his day is going to be a drag his body language enforces the fact that he feels sedated and that he has lost his lease on life. He hates his job he's sexual frustrated and he marriage could be described as empty this is all supported and expressed through his body language and his thoughts of and opinions viewed through his own confessions and those used by the camera.

As we all have come to realize and will all later experience most teenagers view their parents as strange but for Jane played by Thora Birch this is much a state of reality as it is state of mind. Her father Lester is going through a mid life crises at 4 and what can be best described as being apathetic to everything. Jane defiantly views her father as this gigantic loser as expressed by Lester himself. She doesn't have time for him and also doesn't really speak very highly of him Jane is confused and also seems to be displeased by her physical appearance she is saving up for breast augmentation surgery which suggests feelings in insecurity. Jane who I also believe might feel the same way as her dad as if she doesn't really matter to anyone and she is more the girl that nobody seems to show an interest

The dining room sequence the lighting used in this scene is used to place great emphasis on the bunch of American Beauty roses placed on the centre of the table the lighting around the Burnham family appearing morbid and dim in comparison. We also see how Carolyn describes her day and how she hopes to achieve future success. With Lester also once again appearing disinterested and "numb" from the happenings around him with the dreary and rather monotonous music played in the background.

I'm alone, cold, isolated. This is the way it has always been. For as long as I can remember. Although I cannot remember any other lifestyle I am certain that there is something better out there for me. I know this because it is what keeps me going from day to day as I wander the endless passageways, which I call my home. Its hope that keeps me going and its hope that will get me out of here.

I don't know who I am, or what I am. Although what I do know is that I am not normal. If I were, people who have come into contact with me in my home would not have run off screaming or tried to kill me. It is not my destiny to get killed in a trap so I have decided to myself that once and for all, I will not continue to be like a mouse in a maze. I am going to escape.

The doors to my chamber are opened every full moon, and its then when the strangers wander and prepare for their attacks on me. Although this time will be different, after this time I will be free.

Through the squeaking of the rats and the dripping from the roof comes the voice "Come on everyone, this is the way I'm sure of it. Now don't attack until you hear my command, we are going to kill it, just wait for the command." This is my home, they are intruding on me and they know me as 'it'. Hearing this just fuels my rage more and I am ready for the battle, ready to escape.

Do my essay on Deconstruction of the hero tale 'Theseus and the Minotaur' CHEAP !

They are close now, I can feel it, and if I listen carefully enough I can heat the pitter-patter of tiny feet. Just a corner separates us now. I venture tip toeing quietly like a mouse in a maze.

There they are. I can just make out their shadows creeping along the walls. They don't look too big, in fact none of the past intruders looked big. Maybe I am just a monster and maybe this is my punishment. However there is no turning back now.

Our eyes lock and before I know it they are running towards me "Now" screams one member of the group. I am outnumbered for there are about six of them and only one of me.

The first one lunges at me and hurls a fist towards my face although after spending my life in the maze, having to feed off rats my reflexes have grown strong and I manage to avoid his punch. However I am not so successful at ducking the next punch, and the next or the next. "Take this nigger," One screams.

"You don't belong in this world," another says. "You're nothing but a black monster." They now have me pinned down on the ground, I can't get up, and still they keep punching my chest and head. "What have I done to deserve this?" I say. "You killed and raped my sister," one shouts.

"That's impossible, I have been trapped here for at least the last 10years." I explained.

"Doesn't matter, you niggers are all the same. We are doing society a favour by getting another one of you off the planet." One says to me.

Suddenly it occurs to me that I have been planning this evening all wrong. I think to myself 'Why do I want to go out into a world full of people like this group?' Maybe this peaceful world is not past the same doors that these people crawled through. Maybe it will be more peaceful when this life is over. So therefore I won't fight back.

I just lie there and take the punches. I cannot fight any longer, I have given up. Hopefully life after death will be better that the life I live in at the moment.

The punches are starting to grow stronger, and then one of the members of the group pulls out a long shiny sword, to finish me off. As the attacker lunges it towards my neck, I see myself in the swords reflection. This is the first time I have ever seen myself as everyone else sees me, the only difference between me and the men beating me is the colour of my skin.

'I'm a black monster I think to myself, then what are these men, they're nothing but white monsters. It's with this glimpse I am positive that I am going somewhere better, somewhere where people don't kill others just because of the colour of their skin. "I will be free." I say to myself as the sword plunges into my neck.

The world around me is now all dark; it's all now over. Or is it? All of a sudden I'm outside. "So this is what sunlight feels like" I say to myself. "Where am I?" I wonder I look over to my right and see golden gates; I know where I am. I am finally home.

One of the primary roles of government in the marketplace is to protect the end user. This can become difficult at times in our free market society as consumers create a demand for a product that, overall, may not be in their best interest to use. But where there is demand, supply will surely emerge. With our capitalistic form of government, declaring a product unsuitable for sale is a complicated matter, especially when Republicans are calling the shots.

One recent development that has brought this issue up for debate is the death of Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler, a -year-old who had been taking Xenadrine RFA-1 during spring training to help him shed the ten pounds he needed to lose to get to his playing weight. During a workout on a warm mid-February day in Florida, Bechler's body temperature shot up to 108 degrees and he fell victim to heatstroke.

An ingredient in Xenadrine is the herb ephedra, which contains ephedrine. Since ephedra is an herb, it is allowed to circumvent FDA rules and fall under the more lenient Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), which was pushed through Congress by powerful Senator Orrin Hatch. Hatch represents Utah, where approximately 0% of the nation's supplements are made.

The DSHEA puts the burden of proof on the FDA and requires that agency to prove ephedra is a dangerous product. This is despite the fact it contains ephedrine, which has been classified as a drug and is thus "held to the FDA's more stringent drug standard when it is extracted and sold as medicine." (Wolff) While there had already been roughly 1,500 reports of complications deriving from ephedra use and about 100 deaths, it wasn't until Bechler's passing that this issue has drawn any notable attention from the media.

So should the government continue to allow the sale of potentially hazardous products such as those containing ephedra? Shouldn't it at least be classified as a drug since one of its key components is a drug? A utilitarian approach is necessary to answer these questions. Labeling ephedra as a drug would certainly protect consumers but it would also have a negative economic impact on an industry that generates approximately $ billion in sales each year.

Consumers need protection from big business. Scandals such as those that erupted at Enron and WorldCom show companies are fully capable of making profits a higher priority than people. How many more fatalities would have occurred by now if auto safety regulations allowed Ford to continue producing cars such as the Pinto? What are the chances R.J. Reynolds would voluntarily set off on an advertising campaign that discourages smoking if it hadn't been mandated to do so in a settlement with the Attorneys General from several states?

But consumers also can't expect the government to hold their hand through every buying decision. Ephedra certainly isn't alone in its being an item available for consumption on the marketplace that could cause bodily harm under certain conditions if the directions on the bottle aren't followed. While they may require more time to inflict their damage, smoking and excessive drinking are just as dangerous and are addictive as well. I don't recall seeing a warning label on the Big Mac I had at McDonald's the other day. It would be difficult to imagine the total damage to our economy if compensatory justice was doled out whenever a buyer was slighted in the least. Consumers have the right to government protection but the line must be drawn somewhere.

I would recommend Congress close the loophole in the DSHEA that allows drugs to be used as ingredients in herbs and thus avoid the watchful eye of the FDA (the results of a Rand study on ephedra, commissioned by the Bush Administration, are due within weeks). This would allow ephedra to stay on the market but make it a little more difficult to obtain. While a doctor could have seen Bechler's high blood pressure as reason not to prescribe it, that same doctor would have had no control over the fact Bechler took more pills than clearly permitted in the directions on the package. In the end, it's nice to have our government around as a safety buffer but each of us must take at least some responsibility for our own decisions.

Despite the controversy, this was not a major story in any of the magazines I reviewed for this paper. Most did a good job of presenting the basic facts but they did this story no justice by not allocating enough print to allow an in-depth analysis of the issue. It doesn't reflect well on our society that a good portion of my sources came from sports pages and these sources provided the best coverage.

Abstract

The approach described in this paper, facilitated by knowledge management and learning organization, ultimately aims to integrate the use of business processes to build and manage intellectual capital, which essentially leads to operational excellence and greater return on investments particularly for small application development organizations.

Lets take for example a small implementation team. In these teams, not all members would have been trained or given formal education of the system prior to the implementation. In such cases the team gathers knowledge as they progress along the implementation. This type of knowledge is attained through experience therefore is contained or restricted to the person who gained the experience. This is a typical scenario, however, the problem arises when the person leaves the team. Secondly, in some situations, you find redundant research and analysis is done because one team member does not know that the other has the information required.

Many such teams do not know what they know. Today's organizations are so complex that knowledge is fragmented, difficult to locate and share, and, therefore redundant, inconsistent or not used at all. Such a situation can often lead to duplication of effort, which only proves to be unproductive.

The question is, how can we store and fully utilize the experience and knowledge gathered by each individual team member? In this situation, knowledge management plays a key role. Knowledge management helps an organization to gain insight and understanding from its own experience.

Most processes are too heavy and require a large overhead in terms of resources. However, this document speaks of a more practical approach that can be implemented by small sized implementation teams without having to forgo the benefits of a more full range of business processes. An integration of configuration, release service request as well as problem management is applied to this approach. These improved business processes are used to build the intellectual capital that goes on to achieve zero default.

Approach

Since most development environments are cross platforms, a heterogeneous configuration management tool is encouraged. An example would be Rational Clear Case LT. This tool performs at an automation level to manage the knowledge flow. Key contribution include

1.Concurrent development thus improving productivity.

.The history of development through versioning can be tracked in order to prevent similar bugs from being created.

.Promote better control mechanism for release management with more efficiently controlled code baselines

4.The integration of service request and problem management with configuration management facilitates the tracking of all changes that enables future developers to understand and implement similar fixes.

Key Challenges

1.Implementation of the full scale of business processes incurs a large overhead thus resulting in un-productivity.

.Shortage of resources. In most cases there isn't a designated process administrator.

.Heavy processes hinder rapid change.

4.Developers concentrate on their own functional area therefore there is no sharing of knowledge across functional areas.

In a nutshell, this document describes a practical approach to software development by small teams with emphasize on knowledge growth and retention.
