From what I have heard about Slaughterhouse Five, it appears that there is no one theme to the book. The theme that seems most apparent and most obvious is the war and its contrast with love, beauty, and humanity. Vonnegut tells us that war is bad for us and that it would be better for us to love one another. He tries to look for love and beauty in things that seemingly are neither lovely nor beautiful. Many of which are directly from the war itself. For example, when the group of Germans captured Billy, he did not see them as cruel enemies, but as normal, innocent people. Billy looked up at the face that went with the clogs. It was the face of a blond angel, of a fifteen-year-old boy. The boy was as beautiful as Eve. (Vonnegut p.5). These soldiers are probably the worst that could happen to Billy, or to any soldier. They could be taken prisoner or even executed. However, this particular soldier is described as an angel and compared with Eve. These two titles given to the soldiers are not only of beauty, but also of religious innocence.

I find the narration Vonnegut uses confusing yet intriguing. One period of Billys life is told in a linear fashion, his story from the war. However, the line of narration is broken by many other events, but every time a war story begins, it takes up the narrative at the moment when the previous war story ended. It seems that Vonnegut, who had wanted to write a war novel, now wanted to avoid writing about it. The war seems to have been a very tempting subject for him, and Vonnegut was trying to escape writing about it. He managed to do so, to some extent, but every now and then, the story falls back into World War Two.

In addition to when Vonnegut speaks about the war, whenever death is mentioned the phrase So it goes follows. The phrase reflects the Tralfamadorian idea that although a person may be dead in a particular moment, he or she is alive in all the other moments of his or her life, which coexist and can be visited through time travel. At the same time, however, the repetition shows the presence of death throughout the novel, pointing out the inevitability of death.
