He was not insulted by him.

The man feels horror when he looks at this old man¡¥s eye and therefore kills him to get rid of that look.


The killing itself


Looks upon him every midnight for a week

Lights the vulture eye with a ray of his lantern


when he kills him, the victim shrieks once


Hears the beating of his victim¡¥s heart


Cuts the body in pieces

The visit of the policemen


Reason for their visit neighbour heard somebody shriek


He doesn¡¥t get nervous when he opens the door for them (¡§I smiled, - for what had I to fear?¡§)

they all sit down in the old man¡¥s chamber


just chat of familiar things, i.e. the policemen don¡¥t suspect him any longer to be a murderer


murderer gets very nervous and pale, when he hears again the beating of the old man¡¥s heart

The murderer admits the deed although the policemen hadn¡¥t put suspense in him any longer.
