Dear Grandfather, December , 1880

We finally arrived, mother father and I. we all miss you grandmother and china so much. How is everything, we are all fine . . . We got off Angel Island three days ago and now we are at our new home. Its not the greatest especially compared to our home with you and grandmother in China, but I have to say that anything is better than the ship ride here, to America. It was so horrible. It was stinky and dirty and so crowded. Remember the night that you dropped us off at the dock and how many people was there well multiply that by like 100. They were such a long line to the ship and that was only the begging of our line standing. We did not get on the ship until around two in the morning. We went through inspections and they asked mother and father questions about our old life and what we hope to get out of our new life. I guess father answer all the questions right and our little family met the requirements because even though I was very tired we got to skip some lines and pass up a lot of people. I felt bad but I was also happy to go to our room and go to sleep. Our room was very small with one bed and the bathroom was connected to another family's room. The food was very blain and different made me miss Grandmother's cooking so much. There were so many different people on the ship, mostly they all spoke in the language that was from the country they came from and some spoke English. Everybody looked so different and acted so different also. The ship ride was like a pre view of Angel Island. I didn't realize how many people were on the ship until I got off. Every where you looked there were so many people carrying there luggage, trying to keep their whole family together, and trying to get into line before it got any longer. No matter what and how many people added onto the lines they seemed to go on forever, but after you get through the first one it is not too bad. The first line they collect all the information about you and your family and ask a lot of questions after that they split up the males from the females and then we go through the physical exception lines. They checked us up and down, from the top of our hair all the way down to how our feet are and how we walk. After we passed through that line we took a picture and went out to meet father again. I was so happy to see him again. Then the last line we had to stand through was a line to get our tickets for the, but that was going to take us to our new home in America. While I stood in that line with my father on my left and my mother on my right I looked forward and realized that is where my family is going straight forward I felt so good in side and so ready for anything. It was very late by the time we got onto our bus but I could still see outside the window, so many lights lit up the city called San Francisco. I was so beautiful. We arrived to our new house very late but I wasn't tired at all just excited. Well it is not very big it has two bed rooms, a kitchen, bathroom, and a living room. We live in what Americans call an apartment witch is a bunch of houses put together in one building. The past few days that I have been here I have seen so many things and made so many friends that live in the apartment and down the street. Mother has even made some new friends. Most of my new friends are in my class at school and I am teaching my neighbor Palo English. Father really likes his job he has not come home one day with out a smile on his face. He has met a man that has come from China also he says that e just came to see if he wants the rest of his family to come and they are. I told father and mother I thing that you and Grandmother should come. I think every thing is worth it even the ship ride. I miss you and Grandmother so much and I would be so happy if u came to live here in America with us and I know you would be happy here too. Well it is very late and I still have some homework to do. Write back as soon as you receive this letter. I love you.

Love always your granddaughter,

Mulan Chang

"Rear window" (154) composed by Alfred Hitchcock, has been dubbed as one of Hitchcock's 'most recognised films', 'a stylish and classic thriller'. Starring James Stewart as J. B. Jeff Jeffries, Grace Kelly as Lisa Carol Fermont, Wendell Corey as Detective Thomas J. Doyle, and Thelma Ritter as Stewart's nurse Stella, and Raymond Burr as Lars Burr.

J. B. Jeff Jeffries the professional photographer was determined to take the pictures of a lifetime and stepped in the way of a racecar accident. The result, a broken leg and six weeks in a cast in his own Greenwich Village apartment. Bored out of his wits, Jeff can let go of his profession and begins observing the world around him. Since his world is limited to the courtyard and the apartments surrounding him, he begins watching and studying his neighbours. As he becomes more familiar with the cast of characters surrounding him, Stewart begins naming different neighbours and becomes familiar with their routines For example the gorgeous Ballerina dubbed as 'Miss Torso', and a lonely middle aged women appropriately named 'Miss Lonely Heart'. Burr plays a scowling, barrel-chested salesman who steps out several times late one night carrying very heavy luggage and returns with the same bags much lighter. When his bickering, bed-ridden wife is conspicuously absent the next morning, Stewarts analytical imagination goes into overdrive. At first, he calls his friend Detective Thomas J. Doyle to some initial investigations as to the whereabouts of Thorwarld's wife. After investigation, Doyle concludes that Burr is harmless. Stewart deduces something far more sinister. He enlists his girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly) to investigate some of the events that puts him and her in unexpected mortal danger.

The beauty about Rear Window is its inherent simplicity and the masterful way in which Hitchcock tells the story. The editing of the visual text and the way Hitchcock is using surrounding apartments and their inhabitants to add colour to the text, creates a good pace that always feels natural. Times during which nothing happens in the actual story line, are masterfully used to show us snippets of the people around, which help set the scene and develop the plot, often at times different characters becoming involved in the plot. Each of these 'snap-shoots' is intriguing and exciting to watch, offering a wide variety of interesting characters and events.

Help with essay on Camera Angles in Rear Window

Hitchcock's use of subjective camera angles and lighting, convey the base elements of the crime fiction genre mystery, suspicion, intrigue. In the case of 'Rear Window' the main source of mystery occurs in the process not of seeking out who committed the crime, but rather how the crime was committed and proving it. Hitchcock stays true to his reputation, and uses unusual but highly effective camera angles throughout the visual text. The use of panning across the courtyard, subjective camera views of Stewart binoculars and telescopic lens, allow responders, to see what his eyes are seeing, close ups as well as long range shoots heighten the element of suspense throughout the visual text. He establishes the basis of Stewarts character in a single camera pan -- across the cast on his broken leg, over a stack of magazine covers and a smashed camera (evidence of the accident that landed him in a cast), and up to a wall of framed, action-packed pictures divulging his intrepid photojournalism career. The use of lighting and colour is also successful in establishing different scenes and atmosphere, for example Burr's face cast in half shadow and the entire room pitch black, when Thorwarld enters Stewart room, intensifies suspense, tension and a sense of dread from responders.

Hitchcock's 'Rear Window', is a masterpiece filled with suspense and excitement, the visual text is a superb example of how to make a film on one set and still make the viewer feel free of claustrophobia and completely terrified and engrossed as the take a journey on the process of investigation, in proving the existence of a crime.

Abortion

Abortions are very controversial in the world today because of many people's beliefs on fetuses rights to life. Two philosophers in particular argue on the subject regarding abortions morality. Warren believes abortions are permissible in most cases on grounds that a fetus is not a person because it fails each category of what constitutes a person. On the other hand, Noonan's main argument is that since it is wrong to kill innocent human beings and fetuses are innocent human beings then it is wrong to kill fetuses. Noonan's argument is completely faulty in assuming that fetuses are innocent human beings when in fact this is the moral issue at hand.

Noonan first wants to define who is human. He states that at the moment of conception a fetus becomes a human being with a full right to life born to two human parents. He argues that at conception there is a sharp increase in the probability of a fetus becoming a person. The reasoning is there is roughly contains 00 million sperm in one ejaculation. The odds of a sperm coming in contact with a female ovum are therefore 1 in 00 million. But let's say that the egg becomes fertilized, then the chances of a new being developing jumps to a 4 out of 5 probability. This is why Noonan makes the claim that at conception a fetus becomes a human being because the chances of it forming into a human increases sharply. To illustrate his argument, Noonan presents an example of a man hiding behind a bush and someone shooting at the bush. If there were a 1 in 00 million chance that the movement hiding behind the bushes was really a person, then for the most part people would not hold you accountable for shooting the man. But, if the chance there is a man behind the bush is 4 out of 5, people would be more likely to blame you for shooting the man. This comparison Noonan makes is completely unrelated. We are looking at someone currently hiding in a bush versus someone who will become a person in nine months. No person is going to buy this analogy if they do not believe a fetus is a person in the first place. The second argument Noonan presents says that a fetus at conception receives a certain genetic code unique to humans and since a being with a human genetic code is human then a fetus is a human at conception. Noonan fails to recognize that certain individuals do not possess the same genetic code as others. For example, a person with Down syndrome carries an extra copy of chromosome 1 so they do not possess the exact genetic code particular to humans. Does this mean that they are not human? Of course not, but Noonan forgets that some people have different genetic codes than others due to mutations at birth. Therefore, this argument is infallible because it does not acknowledge genetic differences in people.

Now we shall move on to how Noonan defines the term human. He does not distinguish which sense, moral or genetic, he is speaking of in his argument that it is wrong to kill innocent human beings and fetuses are innocent human beings then it is wrong to kill fetuses. If human being is used in the same sense then one of the two premises is question begging. Noonan assumes what he claims to be proving in one of his premises. On the other hand, if he uses different senses then the conclusion does not follow. The first part, "it is wrong to kill an innocent human being," is a moral truth if a human being is used to mean a "full fledged member of the moral community." (Warren) But the genetic sense is in which any member of the species Homo sapiens is a human being. Let us assume that a human being is defined in the moral sense. Noonan only gives genetic evidence to define a fetus as a human therefore the conclusion does not follow.

Custom Essays on Abortion

As Warren points out, Noonan needs to show that fetuses are human beings morally with full and equal rights in order to support his traditional antiabortion argument. Both Warren and I define a human as a fully rational being with a full right to life. Noonan tries to prove that fetuses have experiences at eight weeks because they respond to touch. The problem with this argument is that a fetus is not a rational awake being.

Antonia and Lena Compare/Contrast

At the time of My Antonia, the Nebraska prairie was filling up with immigrants looking for a new beginning. Their old life across the ocean was not what they'd hoped, and in coming to America they tried to do as well as they possibly could with their second chance. Antonia Shimerda, a Bohemian, and Lena Linguard, a Norwegian, were both children at the beginning of the book, and although they spent a good deal of their adolescence in the same area, their lives and personalities were very different.

Antonia was definitely a hard worker during her childhood. After her father took his own life she had to step up and do farm work. Working like a grown man could not have been easy for a teenage girl with no experience whatsoever. Later in her life, as her first marriage fell apart, Antonia once again had to step up and do difficult tasks that were usually done by men. Even after becoming a mother of many children in her second marriage, Antonia still did many hard outdoor jobs while raising a large family as well.

Lena also did do a lot of hard work throughout her life. She did do some work in the fields, but the majority of her work was done designing and making clothes. She took a job with Mrs. Thomas in Black Hawk she thought that there was always too much trouble happening at the farm. When she was working in the town Jim went to college in she was designing as well. In fact, throughout the rest of the book she continued to design and sell in San Francisco.

Antonia always managed to survive in the times that there was not a man in her life, but she seemed to want one there anyway. Even though she was never romantically involved with Jim Burden, she always seems to like it when he was near. The way she was treated in her first marriage combined with Wick Cutter's attempted adultery with her could have soured her opinion of men enough to remain a single woman for the rest of her life. She still wanted and maybe needed someone to be with and eventually ended up in a marriage where the man seemed to treat her fairly well.

Lena never wanted to be married at all. She did spend a good deal of time with Jim as a young adult, but she had no romantic interest in him. She simply enjoyed having another person around in Lincoln that she could see plays with and talk with. From the time she took the job as a dressmaker, she always told everyone that she would not get married. She thought that there was no way she could avoid having a husband and kids who would always get in her way and take her time away from work. At the end of the story she was still living single and making a good living.

Jim had many feelings about Antonia over the length of the book. Early on they were simply close friends who spent their recreation time together. As they got older, they seemed to be the only thing that could remind the other of their youth. They both always enjoyed being able to reminisce about the good times in their lives with each other, no matter what was currently going on. Jim's effect on Antonia was always strong as well. She even told stories to her children many times even though it had been twenty years since she had last saw him.

Lena's relationship with Jim was not as strong, but still they had both had an effect on each other. They did not spend all that much time together as children. Most of their interaction was while they were both in Lincoln. They enjoyed going to plays together, and seemed to remind each other of the good things about the present. Jim's effect on Lena did not seem to be as significant over time, and despite Jim's attempts, they never became involved.

The differences between these two girls strongly outweigh the similarities. For whatever reason, whether it was their birthplace or anything else, the place where they grew up didn't have much of an effect on their personalities, or where they ended up in life.

At age 16, the relationship between my family and I progressed profoundly. Before then, there was hardly any communication, let alone a relationship. How does a nurturing relationship occur between parent and child?

In Amy Tan's novel, The Joy Luck Club she explores the relationships of four mothers and daughters. In the relationship between Ying-ying St Clair and her daughter Lena, the mother tries to teach her daughter the value of self worth. Tan tells us the story of Ying Ying's earlier abusive marriage in China in order to connect her past experiences with Lena's.

When Ying-ying was sixteen she attended her aunts wedding and met a guy who soon became her future husband. At that precise point in time he was drunk, and in his state of mind he attracted Ying-ying by plunging a knife into a watermelon. I think the raw act was evocative of taking a girls virginity. When the man wooed her with words of love and flattery it wasn't long before young Ying-ying fell in love with him. Shortly afterwards, Ying-ying married him. She was miserable and her marriage was a disaster. She soon found out that the man of her dreams was that of her nightmare also. When she became pregnant, her husband left her for another woman. Ying-ying was devastated. She felt she had no choice but to have an abortion. But the abandonment by her husband, followed by the abortion, however left Ying-ying with deep emotionally scars. As a result of this, she moved to Shanghai to live with her cousins and spent ten years being poor. She then left her cousins, moved to the city, and got a job, trying to erase her past.

However, while she was in Shanghai, she met an American man by the name of Clifford St. Clair. He dated her for a profound number of years, but Ying-ying would not marry him. Then, she heard that her first husband was dead, she said yes to Clifford's proposal and moved to America with him. Soon after, she gave birth to Lena. .

When Ying-ying visited Lena and Harold in their home, she judged it to be overpriced and poorly built. Although one would of loved to acquire Lena's modern and comfortable life-style, she failed to make a favorable impact on Ying-ying. Although she was put into a fashionable guest bedroom, Ying-ying was upset because the room was small; the Chinese custom was to give the guest the best room in the house. She also believed that the house was so poorly constructed that it was going to fall down.

During her visit, Ying-ying sees quite clearly that her daughter was unhappy in her marriage. She also realized that Harold is too busy and self-centered to notice Lena's misery. Ying-ying knew that her daughter was suffering a fate that she suffered many years prior. Ying-ying knew that if she did not do something about Lena's miserable marriage, she would of been scared. She did not want Lena to have the same kind of scars she had. Ying-ying admits to the reader that she was a rebellious girl from a rich family. She compared her youthful self to a tigressfull of fire and heat; she was "waiting between the trees" to pounce on something she liked. This time she wanted to pounce on the opportunity to provoke some positive action into her daughter. She could not bear to see her daughter living in such despair.

Lena could always see that her mom was depressed, dead even though alive (in a matter of speaking). Similarly, Lena too was faced with trials and tribulations in her marriage. Not only was she not receiving any respect from her husband but no love from him as well. Her mother acknowledged the apparent problem and tells her daughter to leave him and never come back if she didn't get what she wanted from him. Later on, she did leave and found the happiness she was seeking. With her mothers guidance Lena found a way to cut her spirit loose as her mother once did for her own.

In conclusion, I have discussed the relationship between Ying-ying and her daughter Lena. Both in which endured a great deal of turmoil in their marriages and overcame the suffering during their journey of self-discovery to become stronger women towards the end.

Picking Up The Pieces A lab on Fiber Analysis

Objective To collect fiber evidence, then analyze it to identify its source.

Procedure

1.Collect a red fiber from the "victim" by carefully lifting the fiber with a pair of forceps. Do not touch the fiber with your hands. Place fiber on a piece of white paper, then fold the paper in half twice.

Custom Essays on Fiber Analysis

.Carry the fiber to your lab station. Prepare a wet-mount slide of the fiber by placing it on the slide, adding a drop of water, and covering the fiber and water with a cover slip.

.Examine the fiber under low, medium, and high magnification of your microscope. Sketch what you see. Note any pits or striations on the fiber.

4.Compare this fiber to known samples of wool, rayon, silk, and cotton. Sketch each of these samples at the magnification that gives you the best view and record these sketches here.

5.Light your candle and compare the burning characteristics of the unknown fiber to the known samples. Record your observations on the Data Table.

a.Holding the fiber in forceps, bring it close to, but not touching, a flame. Describe the fiber's behavior as it approaches a flame does it begin to melt, ignite, curl?

b.Holding the fiber in forceps, touch the fiber to a flame. Does it ignite quickly or slowly? Does it sputter, drip, or melt?

c.Remove the fiber from the flame and describe how it behaves. Does it extinguish. Continue to burn, or continue to glow?

d.Note any odor associated with the fiber in the flame. Does it smell like vinegar or hair?

e.What kind of residue is left after the fiber is removed from the flame? Does the fiber leave a white, fluffy ash, a hard bead, or a melted blob?

Data Analysis

Through careful examination of the crime-scene fibers, we have discovered the material typing. During the microscope examining we found that the fibers where very loose, and stringy. During the burning test, we discovered that the material melted approaching the flame, and burnt and melted at the same time. It also drips with a plastic look to it, and smells like burning plastic. The residue left was a stringy melt. On the known fabrics we concluded that wool and cotton are very much the same. Both had stray fibers off of the main fiber. The rayon had very thick continuous weave. The silk had a rather "spun" look to it, and last but not least the polyester was stringy and loose. During the burn test we discovered that wool was very slow to ignite as well as silk, rayon and cotton were quick to ignite, and polyester melted then ignited. Also wool and silk smelt like burning hair, cotton, and rayon smelt like burning leaves, and polyester smelt like burning plastic. The residue left by all of them was wool had a big blob that melted together, rayon had a slight ash left, silk had a hard beady ash crust, polyester had a stringy melt, and cotton left ash crumbles.

Conclusion

In conclusion we have determined that Casey is the murderer. Through the evidence, and data analysis we conclude this in many ways. The fibers found on the victim's body were that of polyester. During the burn test both fibers found on the victim and the known fiber, polyester, demonstrated similar characteristics. Among these are, they both melted when approaching the fire, smelt like burning plastic, and the residue left was a stringy melt. Through the microscope tests we determined that the characteristics of the polyester and the fiber found on the victims body were similar.

Both had thin loose fibers and were both reddish-pink.

How is it useful

Fiber analysis is important in many different ways. One way it is important is if a crime was committed and stray fibers were left on the victim, a forensic scientist can study those fibers, link them to a person, place, or thing and help solve a crime, by placing suspects in attention. I learned during this lab that it is very important to pay close attention to the little details. In identifying a fiber it is very important to pay attention, because many fibers look the same to the naked eye, but with further examination they are much different.

Compare the way in which Robert Browning presents unusual characters in unusual situations with close reference to the language used. Which characters do you find most memorable?

Robert Browning lived between (181-188). He died at the age of 77. Robert Browning was happily married after a long struggle. Elizabeth Browning came from a very over protective family her father was very patriarchal. Elizabeth managed to get away in her 40's where she married Robert. Elizabeth Browning at the time was a famous poet who wrote a sonnet called 'Remember me when I have gone'. Which led her to her fame.

Victorian times was hard for women, they had to reserve themselves and they never flaunted themselves towards other men. They were expected to always look good. They wore their corsets so tight that it squashed their internal organs. It also was also seen as a sexual act to eat fruit in public they went in hiding to eat it. Some woman even got ribs removed so they can get a better figure. Most of the 0th centaury woman married when they were very young. Rich fathers often married their daughters of very young to rich elder men.

In the poem Porphyria's lover Browning sets the scene as personified weather, it is as if the weather has a personality, 'the rain set early into the night, the sullen wind was soon awake'. He describes the weather as if something bad is going to happen. However when Porphyria comes in to the cottage she brings warmth love and happiness 'blazed up the cottage warm'. It's as if Porphyria's lover is the cottage and all of the troubles are outside of the cottage. In the poem 'My last duchess' is set in the time of the renaissance 14th-16th century where it was fashionable to have a painting of yourself. Robert Browning in the poem describes a large mansion; it was a massive rich stately home. This shows that someone very rich and powerful lives in this mansion.

In the poem Porphyria comes into the cottage, her lover knows that she has been with someone else. …..'When glided in Porphyria straight'. /

This shows that Porphyria has no shame. 'She shut the cold out and the storm, and kneeled and made the cheerless grate'./

This shows that all her movements are pleasant. 'Withdrew her dripping clock and shawl, and laid her solid gloves by'./

There is some sexual promiscuity going on here.
