Antonia Shimerda, a Bohemian, and Lena Linguard, a Norwegian, were both children at the beginning of the book, and although they spent a good deal of their adolescence in the same area, their lives and personalities were very different.
Antonia was definitely a hard worker during her childhood. After her father took his own life she had to step up and do farm work. Working like a grown man could not have been easy for a teenage girl with no experience whatsoever. Later in her life, as her first marriage fell apart, Antonia once again had to step up and do difficult tasks that were usually done by men. Even after becoming a mother of many children in her second marriage, Antonia still did many hard outdoor jobs while raising a large family as well.
