Dinotopia the Maze by Peter David is a book of braveness, courage and adventure. The main characters Gwen, Jason and Booj (a Velociraptor) try to find a megaraptor, Odon. They believed he could heal Gwen's dad who was ill. They must find the hidden maze full of traps that Odon is hiding in. This maze requires both teamwork and strategy. They must work fast because they need to find a cure for Gwen's dad.

Gwen did not have a good relationship with her father. "Is that understood!" () Gwen didn't like her father at that time. She thought her father didn't like her. Gwen tries to talk to him but all he cares about is working on his farm. " You're my daughter. I love you. Any other discussion is simply pointless. Dwelling on what might have been is a waste of time, Gwen. And there're not enough hours in the day for me to waste. Gwen had met up with Jason in the woods after she ran away from her father who had not been treating her well. Jason mentioned how Odon was a healer and he was in a maze with traps. Jason was a very smart boy. "Memorize it. Learn it, understand it, and take it in here-". (7) Gwen and Jason eventually met up with Booj a Velociraptor. On their journey, Booj offered to show them the way to the maze. At the same time that Jason and Booj were looking for the secret entrance to the maze, Gwen disappeared into a hole in a wall after stomping her foot into the ground. Now in the maze, Gwen would have to work fast and as a team with her other two friends, also in the maze, in order to find Odon.
While in the maze they came upon many obstacles. "Why are they attacking us?!".(5) This is when Gwen, Jason, and Booj all needed to work together as a team the most. In the maze there is a natural gas that caused Gwen and Jason to fight. Booj knew what was going on and told Gwen and Jason which made them stay together as a team. As they got closer into the maze, what they thought was a monster was really a geyser and they headed toward it. They had finally reached Odon but he wouldn't help them to heal Gwen's dad. "I've been polite, and I've been patient, but now I want to be left alone. There are always other healers, seek them" (1-10) Odon didn't believe humans and dinosaurs should work together. Since Gwen, Jason, and Booj wouldn't leave, Odon knocked Booj down and held Booj down with Odon's own foot. Gwen tried to get Odon away by punching him. Jason tried to grab Odon's tail, Oden finally backed off. Gwen and Jason told Odon that Booj was their friend and they would never run away. After that Odon offered to help Gwen's dad with medicine that he made from fungus. The fungus grew in volcanic vents near to the house where Odon used to live. Odon wanted to spend time with Jason, "I've had very little contact with society for some time now. I venture out to the surface very rarely. However, I think it's time I re-evaluate my life. Embark again on the maze that relationships with others always are. However, rather than throw myself into the thick of it, I shall spend time with Jason. It will be a good way to ease myself back into your world."(18) (Odon speaking) The characters showed that good things can happen when people work together to come up with a plan.
The author's use of adventure with the teamwork message throughout the story, made this an exciting and suspenseful book to read. This book was full of courage and adventure. The author created an image in my mind of a maze that was scary and dark. This book had a very good ending. Gwen, Jason, and Booj were successful and got to Odon and cured Gwen's dad. The lesson I learned in this book is that people working together as a team, where everyone helps each other, can accomplish things much better and quicker.
