Colonial America Religion and Wealth
Colonial America can best be described as a place for a new beginning. Most early settlers of what would later become America, colonized the area, in search of wealth and moral purity. They all had one dream, one goal, one aspiration, and ultimately one major concern, and/ or ideal upon arrival to the "New World" and that was to connect every aspect of their life. They wanted to form a connection between political status, employment, recreational activities, their religious foundation, and its' subsequent beliefs. Reports of the economic success and religious and political freedom of the early colonists attracted a steady flow of new settlers from all over the world. They came with similar objectives and goals as the previous colonists, and they to were seeking new found success in the "New World." The Puritans came to the colonies to seek wealth and riches, as well as the freedom to practice religion as they saw fit, as opposed to the almost communistic religious beliefs they were allowed and forced to practice under the British rule.

In the early Colonial America period religion played a major role in a lot of its' new founder's lives. Many groups ventured off to the new land of wonder on dangerous and risky voyages to escape persecution for their religious beliefs, which were not tolerated in England. The Puritans came to the "New World" to erect a "City Upon a hill" that would serve as a model for the rest of the Christian world. The goal they strived for in order to make this city successful was to create the perfect, pure society where there was no sin and God ruled completely. More or less so, they were attempting to create a euphoric society. Their first action they took in order to reach this goal was to put the church in control of the colony. Sometimes people were not allowed to question what they were taught and if they did so they were punished accordingly. They did everything in their power to keep this dream alive. They created strict laws and enforced them vigorously all in the name of God. It was destined to fail because of the growing political liberty in England and the numerous advancements during the age of enlightenment; which eventually came into direct conflict with established Puritans beliefs.
Along with religious motives many of the new founders came to the colonies seeking wealth and material success. With rising unemployment, several harvest failures, and other economic conditions in England, the decision of many colonists to migrate to the colonies was made easy. The new founders looked upon the American colonies as a place where they could buy land or find employment and eventually, and ultimately better themselves as people. This new land which was not ran by Parliament, was a way for the "common man" to make a name for himself. As a direct result of land being offered for

free, or at such a low cost to the majority of the newly declared colonists, it became one of, if not the, greatest economic attraction of the World. They took their land and built farms to harvest crops, which were sold overseas. Other settlers planned to make a profit from their colonies and to expand English trade and industry. They advertised for settlers and brought to their attention that fertile land and valuable resources were available in the so-called "New World." Land ownership also provided people with independence and a promise that both them and their families could partake in the better standard of living offered by the vast expansion of the "New World." "By the early eighteenth century the great families built large mansions and modeled their lives on the English rural gentry" (APS Reader, p.5). The economic aspect of Colonial American society was centered around trade and barter. This was of significant importance as Americans saw many different trades in their communities.
Although the majority of the new founders came to America to settle on their own and to seek a better life, some of them had no say so in the matter. Prisoners in the overcrowded England prisons, African- Americans, and Native Americans are some of the different groups who were involuntarily imported to the "New World" to provide settlers with "free" labor. The Colonial period marks the beginning of slavery in North America. Slavery was a lot more prosperous in The Southern colonies than The New England Colonies. The southern new founders had large plantations and crops that needed an enormous amount of labor and tending too, then say the tobacco and rice crops up north. established vague rules and regulations regarding the protection of slaves. The Virginia's Statutes 1705, Chap. XLIX, section VII states "That all masters and owners of servants, shall find and provide for their servants, wholesome and competent diet, clothing, and lodging, by the discretion of the county courts…" Slavery continued for many years. Ending in a dispute between North and South to abolish it. Little did colonists know what started as a minor disagreement would soon take many lives and become the greatest war ever fought amongst Americans, which all started by the human desire to prosper and gain wealth in the "New World."
Most Europeans knew that by coming to America they would be forced to endure
and hopefully overcome obstacles, barriers and undoubtedly danger; however, they were also aware that the "New World" offered the opportunity for a new start in every intimate aspect and specific detail of their life. Some of the new founders, or colonists were already well endowed but saw America as a place where they could gain power and extremely prosper. To an elite group of new founders it was not just wealth but gentility that they craved (APS Reader, p.5). Many others yearned for success and numerous died doing it, but by the mid-1700s, most colonists had achieved the goal they were striving for upon arrival to the colonies and were conquering and expanding the land we know today as the land of the free and the home of the brave --"AMERICA."
